  1. Alamak Douglas,

I cannot make it la. We are going to Chiang Mai with Feztus. Can you arrange another time? Now quite itchy to ride. Andrew has a ride this Sat, but very short, around MBS and Gardens by the Bay.

    Cheers, will miss the seafood.

  2. Alamak Douglas,

I cannot make it too, will be out out town during this weekend. Surely can change date too. Anyway have a good trip and miss cycling and good food again. BL

  3. Hi Douglas,

Joseph Ko, George Ng and myself would like to join this ride. They will be using their own bike while I would need to rent one.

    Thanks
    Ron

  4. hi doug,

1st time joining SHC cycling event…..me and company (Total: 2 pax)would like to join this ride and will be using our own bike.

    Rgds, solomon

  5. Hi Douglas,

As per my last sms. I wanted to join.
    V. Sorry. Now, I cannot join this time round as I had 3 ” babies” to look after.

Just in case of any emergency I need to be around. Perhaps another time.

  6. Hi all

Do not transfer money to my account as I don’t
have enough people to make ferry booking. We
will queue for the ferry at the ferry terminal

This cycling event may be cancelled due to pre dawn rain. I will then sms to inform that the event is off.

Sorry, I can’t update/add/edit names to the registration list.

    Regards

  7. It’s tempting for me join this ride..with own bike.
BUT (as advised) I am still waiting for some goods firmed ETA SIN dates..
So, Doug, can only give you a last minute confirmation..
Great that you are planning to queue for the ferry…
That way, my last minute confirmation will not knock-up things for you..
Anyway, fingers still crossed..but not hopeful!

  8. Hi All,

I ever embarked on the same journey when I was a 50-year old employee of a petroleum corp. Back then, the cost was 40% subsidized with meals & one overnight hotel stay per participant by my company’s recreation club.

True, the journey was long and sweatingly exhaustive under the hot sun, nevertheless, we enjoyed every minute of it. Those riding in front should warn those riding behind of speeding on-coming traffic, particularly so, of heavily laden cargo Malaysian trucks driven by their hell-drivers. Several energetic and sporty lady colleagues, with a keen sense of humour, also took part which made the trip all the more interesting with fun and laughter shared with their clownish male colleagues.

In the evening after dinner, we helped ourselves with juicy durians for supper to top up our energy reserves for the return trip home the following morning. The camaraderie amongst us exceeded our expectations with everybody chipping in as lookouts for one another for impending danger, if any.

Now 18 years since then, I am convinced that presently I don’t have the same alertness and energy level to embark on such a journey. The threat of an heart attack is very real for somebody my age without weeks of pre-trip cycling training.

Anyway, may I wish the SHCian cyclists all the very best
on their up-and-coming cycling trip. Wishing you all an ultra safe journey back home to be in the loving arms of your spouses with whom kisses flow like vintage wine: the more you have, the more you are in need. All good stories must have happy endings.

    Best of luck.

    Cheers

  9. Terry #12,
    After reading your posting….
Can I conclude that you will join us in pre-trip cycling training soon….??
So that come Oct 2013…..YOU WILL BE READY!! for the Pengerang – Sg Rengit trip next year?
    LOL! LOL!!

  10. #13 Ivan,

OK set. I’m elderly, but I am no coward. It should be more
rational and productive to arrange the cycling trip away from the rainy season, say, to take place in the middle of next year. In a heavy thunderstorm, visibility is quite low and other vehicles might just skid and bump into us cyclists through no fault of their drivers due largely to slippery wet road conditions. Another dreadful senario is catching sun burnt during the course of the journey.

Come on Ivan, I am not in the habit of cooking up cock and bull stories to impress others. I still have two bicycles at home locked up along my verandah.

Ivan, what contigency plan do you have up your sleeve if it so happens that one of our bicyles sustains a tyre puncture?
There are indeed imponderables and contigencies to be evaluated before embarking on such a long trip. A rider’s tyre puncture is equal to the intensity of puncturing his enthusiasm for the remainder of his cycling trip.

We embark on a long cycling trip to Sg. Ringgit on the assumption that everything runs smoothly like clockwork, ignoring the “What ifs?”. Are we ostriches burying our
    heads in the sand?

  11. Hi Terry #16,

I read through your comment a few times, and can sense you were trying to give advice and warning on the cycling trip to Pengerang.

At the same time, knowing Douglas and Ivan, I can also tell they are very meticulous and careful organisers, especially from what they have done with other earlier cycling activities. I support the efforts of all Event organisers and Event coordinators, and for their initiatives in wanting to bring SilverHairs together, I would give them all the encouragement to make this activity a success.

As EOs and ECs, they have the full right to decide on the dates of their activities and the manner the event is run. As non-organisers, let’s feel free to offer them advice. But, the key is to give them our encouragement, support and kind words.

  12. Hi all

We will return same day and since we do not have ferry reservations, we must be back at Tg Pengelih ferry terminal by 3pm.

    cheers

  13. #13 Ivan,

Looking at the very small number of cycling participants that you have, I think you were trying to trick me into joining your cycling trip to increase your group size.

That said, I am withdrawing my offer of participation. After all, there is nothing much interesting to enjoy in this sleepy, small town named Sungei Ringgit.

A potato should not be boiled twice. Having already stayed overnight there once more than a decade ago should have fully satisfied my curiosity over the place. It is no longer value for money. Sorry Ivan.

  14. #17 Terence Seah,

Thank you Terence. I fully agree with your take over the competence of your EOs and ECs whose primary duties are to oversee the course of an event from start to finish.

May I take this opportunity to wish the SHC cycling group an enjoyable trip to Sg. Ringgit and a smooth return trip back home.

I do admit that sometimes my comments can be prickly to some, but nonetheless no malice was ever intended. After all, we are in SHC fellowshipping with one another to strengthen bonds as we march hand in hand well into the a promising future as SHCians, proud of our common identity and destiny as clubbers.

  15. Hi Ivan

I m looking at organising the trip to Rumania for an overnite stay next year. Date is not fixed but tentatively in the 1st qtr. So many have waited n looking forward so eagerly for it to happen.

This time I n organising team will make it more enjoyable than the last one. We are going to roll all over the beach.

  16. Terry #16 & 19
I firmly believe that cycling is lifestyle active ageing, intergeneration, family and friendship bonding activity and IS HEALTHY….but NEGATIVITY IS UNHEALTHY…….it sometimes KILLS. Thus Positive words and actions way to go!!!!

Well, the world is encouraging elderly to indulge in ageing activities including cycling……I am 67 got into riding few months ago after lying off for 50 years..hahahaha

Please refrain from making any allegation of any persons. It is appreciated. NOBODY is ‘trying to trick’ anyone into any event…..People join at their own will and risks. Whatever participation numbers the ride goes on; anyway, such allegation can be deemed as a defamation of character. Verbosity is good but contents are of paramount importance.

I echo Terence’s comment #17 as I have every respect for both these gentlemen. They are very “fatherly” when we ride.

  17. Terry #16 & #19

As an organiser of eight SHC events during my membership since August 2010, I fully emphathize with other EOs who spent time and at times spent some money out of his own pocket in trying to arrange an event for the enjoyment of other members. When I organised a Karaoke singing competition I was worried that whether the $10 I collected from each participant was enough to cover the rent of the lounge, the refreshment and the prize money.
From what has been said and the responses to the events it
seems that all these efforts have not been fully appreciated.
As in all outdoor activities, there are always imponderables.
Perhaps we should share a thought with one Chinese sage who said something to this effect: ” The joy and thrill of travel is you do not know when you will reach the destination”.

  18. Yew Kwong #21

Yes I look forward to another trip to Pengarang. I have to miss this month’s trip with Doug because I will be on my way out of Singapore on the day.
I promise to look after myself and not make EO responsible for punctures, falls, happiness or death.
Make sure Nor and Bira come along, I need their ‘inspiration ‘to reach Sungei Rengit.
Please make sure I don’t share bed with Steven Chan, like the last trip. We are not married.

  19. Hi Douglas,

Sorry. last minute I will be able to join you as I got my nephew to stand by for the “babies ” and cycle with a peace of mind.

I rented bike pls. THanks for organising this cycling tour which i had look forward too.

  20. Tian Soo

I missed the Ubin ride. Also, the coming ride to Pengarang. Saw Bira n Norlinda 2nite at Han’s. Think they should be joining the Rumania’s stay. Dates I m still looking at, possibly Mar.

I assure you that I will look out for u, take care of all your punctures (or even punches), falls (can fall on me), happiness (share same bed with u) n death (I can only give u an ang pow) as EO. Reason bcause u are my fren. Non-frenz – hahaha dont even get a chance to ride with me.

  21. Hellloooo Tai Kor Yew Kwong #21,
Long time no hear from you….
Great that you are planning Rumania Overnite Riding Trip for 2013….

  24. Hi all

Pengarang is also the 1st Msian destination I cycled to with a small group under the careful guidance of Douglas. Sungei Rengit is a small town, quiet n small. Nothing much to see though but plenty of nice food to savour n one can find total relaxation.

We also had an overnite stay filled with fun, laughters, jokes, cycling n games. Besides, the view of the sea from outside our chalets overlooking the sea was most beautiful. It brought back lots of fond memories. That was I think more than 2 yrs ago. Next year, we will be going there once again.

I’m sure those going on this coming trip will definitely enjoy the ride.

  25. Wow wee…. 12 ‘kung ho’ guys riding off to a sleepy town.

Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable trip (a little belated but nevertheless……). Can’t wait to hear (read) of your reports on this eventful trip.

This is the 4th (or was it the 5th?) of such overseas cycling trips organised by cycling leaders started by Yew Kwong and Douglas since the 3rd year of SHC’s existence.

For those not in the know….. cycling leaders starting with Yew Kwong, then Douglas and Ivan are all experienced, cautious and very caring EOs to all cyclists.

Those who have join cycling events would have known this.

  26. I support Lily’s comment #33.

Penggerang was SHC’s very first “overseas” trip back in April 2008 and 2nd “overeseas” trip to Desaru in September 2008. Both were led by Douglas and team. Prior to every trip this team would recee the route and places.
They are a caring and very responsible team.

Being a fresh newbie then, it was my very first ride for both. Douglas and team ensured every detail was taken care of including punctures, leg cramps, sweeping slowest cyclist making sure nobody is left behind and the “convoy” gets to the desination/home safely.

Experienced Leaders like Yew Kwong and rest have the same standards.

If you are confident to ride come join the group. However if you have any reservations, please condition yourself. You can make it. Punctures, breakdowns, etc are the least of worries as the leaders would have made preparations for such. Most importantly enjoy the sport, fellowship, food and fun.

    Cheers,
    Grace Kok

  27. Bro Yew Kwong, (#32)

Indeed I was in the same group and we had a great wonderful time. Those fond memories still linger on.
Hope to catch up with you one day :).

Thanks to Douglas,Boon Liang,Joyce and Renee for their care and concern during that first trip. They are an awesome team.

    Cheers,
    Grace Kok

  28. Hi Yew Kwong and Grace Kok

Thank you for highlighting our first shc cycling event to Pengerang and Desaru which was organize and lead by me.

There were then 2 boat full of shcians, some were beginners with non hardcore cyclist, After that event, some were motivated with inspirations and have now become long distance cyclists.

One person who stands out is Grace because at that time she could hardly mount and dismount from the bicycle lest cycle properly. She has now becomes a long distance cyclist and has cycled up as far as to Malacca.

    cheers

  29. Hi all

Our cycling trip to Pengerang goes off smoothly as it should be. It was a slow and leisure ride.
We left Changi Point FT around 7.10 and reached Sg Rengit at 10am. Along the way, someone had a punctured tyre and it was promptly replaced.

We visited the ostrich farm and ordered a fried ostrich egg and some ostrich satay to go with it.
Our seafood lunch was appetising and delicious even though the price was on the high side.

We had so much fun, jokes were shared and stories told even though it was our first time meeting and getting to know each other. There was so much laughter. What a jovial group.

Thank you everyone and special thanks to Ivan for being a great sweeper with his whistle.

    cheers

  30. Douglas…..

What about the famous delicious “beh teh saw”? It was because of “beh teh saw” that Dolly was inspired to go the 2nd time to Pengarang. I remembered Nor and Carly, their bicycle was loaded with those delicacies when on our way back to Singapore. Yes, indeed it was so FUN and sweet memories…..

    Ah Nee :)

  31. Hi all

Thanks for all your compliments. Douglas was my inspiration. If I had not gone for that “fateful” ride to Pengarang, I would not have done long distance as I had till now. I said to myself “if he (Douglas) older than me can be so energetic, I many years younger can do better. Determined, I cycle to Msian places more often. The longest distance I had rode was close to 500km over 3 days, an event I had participated for 2 years n will continue to do so.

If u want to enjoy your ride be it in or outside Spore, u need to train n condition yourself. The SHC cycling group is evidence of cyclists getting stronger n craving to ride longer distance to see more places. Best of all, we all want to be rewarded with yummy food.

I m also looking forward to or hopefully, having our own SHC cycling jersey in the future.

  32. Yes yes, ANee, tio tio, I remembered going 4 training hor, from ECP to Changi Point, alamak, very kangkor leh.. but cos of ‘beh teh saw’ I faithfully go 4 training until Douglas said I passed lor.. heng arh…

Yeap, still remembered that during our first trip, while some of them were busy taking photo near d seaside, Carly n me were too busy trying n buying cookies lor.. Cant reli remembered who backpacked d ‘beh teh saw’ on rtn trip cos I brought so many boxes lor. Is he, Tai Lo or Boon Liang har.. I enjoyed the our first cycling to Pengarang very much. As for d 2nd trip, was still ‘beh teh saw’ dat I went again.. but tis time, terok, bo training so.. stamina reli bad but luckily got Boon Liang n Tai Lor as sweepers watching me closely 2 make sure dat I m not d lost lamb lor. But I still enjoyed very much cos got back ‘beh teh saw’ mah..

And of cos, not forgetting Molly, who had kindly borrow a ninja turtle helmet to ensure my safety.. Thank you…

Also CharlesWee who was also there, giving me some tips on cycling…

    Those were d days… :) Sweet memories… :)

Cycling event will not be possible if not for dedicated members, like Tai Lor, Douglas, Boon Liang, Ivan and CharlesC and Lily to make sure dat this activities is still ongoing till today.

I will b back once my back treatment is completed, hopefully in another 3mths’ time.. den, I will definitely continue 2 join tis activities whenever I can..

Hip Hip Hurray…. All of them 2 keep this activity is strong…

  33. Hi All

This trip had a slightly different flavor as majority of the members were “strangers” when we met at the bike shop. After all hi here and hi there we proceeded with the journey. Getting through the immigration and custom at both ends were like a breeze.

But as we left Changi jetty the weather was not very promising that reflected a gloomy look on everybody. But upon returning after cycling 44km, there was a total transformation in spite of sporadic rain in between………it was all smiling faces as there were tons of camaraderie spirit; laughter louder than the sea waves pounding on the shores; jokes at the expense of each other; good food (although pricey) and well planned leisure program suitable for “young at heart” like yours truly. Yes, this trip experience shall be deposited in my “treasury of everlasting memories”.

We were informed the entire Pengerang will be “gutted” to make way for new petroleum project…….Perhaps it would be great to make another trip to kindle the fond memories.

  34. Yes, fond memories. I thought I was so unfit that I may not be able to complete the distance. But the thought of delicious beh teh saw, mmmm… yes Dolly and I made it.

There was so much camaraderie and we have my sweetheard and Douglas, Charles Wee and Boon Liang as sweepers who made sure we were not left behind. Yes, I feel the care and concern very much. I was all wrapped up, so afraid the sun will get to me.

Was so looking forward to this 20th Oct trip but had to help my daughters at the Farmers Market so had to give that a miss :(
Truly hope there will be another trip planned before, what Malcolm had said about the place being “gutted”.

Hahaha! Ah Nee, the basket was so full with beh teh saw that I could hardly see what was ahead. And yes, the delicious seafood lunch. How I miss them.

But first, Dolly, we must build up our stamina otherwise, we will be “punchet” before we reach the destination.

    Jia You!!!

    Cheers
    Carly

  35. Hi All,
I am sure you are all waiting for the pics of this ride to be posted…
Please wait a moment while I consolidate them before sending to our SHC Photo Mgr, Lee King Seng, for uploading…
    Jo-Toh-Ma-Tay….ya!

  36. Hi Douglas, Ivan,

The pictures of the Pengerang Ride tells a whole lot about how enjoyable the cycling activity went. You have brought the participants together. A mixture of sweat, sea breeze, coconuts, sotongs and ostrichs. Thank you for being so inspiring to SHC.
