How about an afternoon BBQ at the East Coast Park on a weekend? Sat 18 May 2013

During the earlier days of the SilverHairsClub, we had held a couple of BBQs at the East Coast Park.  On some occasions, the event coincide with the cycling activity.  On one occasion, it was a standalone late afternoon, and I remembered we almost had to beg the rain to stay up in the skies.

Perhaps, it is time to have another one.  Here’s the map.

bbqLet’s say:

We get the charcoal, the starters, the drinks, the water, the BBQ sauce, the plates, the fork and spoons, cups, ice, rubbish bags, the tissue paper from the shop, near Area C.  We have a reasonable charge.

We book two pits from the National Park.

We get to park at carpark C1.  There is an under pass to Marine Parade Promenade.

We get to swim, sun tan and laze around the greens.  Show off our swimming gear, play netball or badminton.  Or go cycling after the BBQ makan.

And, we have an afternoon BBQ, say 12nn to 1600 hrs.

And, everybody brings one pc of sausage, 200 grams of beef or a corb of jargon or one pc of chicken wings from their supermarket.

And, we clean up the place by 1600 hrs.  We can also not clean the place up, and pay someone to clean it up behind us.

Date confirmed –  Sat 18 May 2013 at BBQ pits C13 & C14.

A permit is a must to use the bbq pit if u intend to hold a bbq party else the ranger on duty will sure chase u away. Image u are running with one hand holding a sausage n the other a chicken wing half cooked in East Coast Park. So funny.

  2. Thanks Yew Kwong for the advice.

And, for members, I wonder if it is better to hold this daytime BBQ on a Sat or a Sunday. Maybe, a Sunday.

  3. Aiyo Terence,

You and others will be burned in the afternoon sun with the sea breeze marinade yo. you’ll feel like Salted baked chicken by 1500Hr.! Hehehe.
Try a late afternoon BBQ. Think more SHCians will participate.
Hope you’ll like the idea of an evening BBQ.
    Just thinking aloud only.

  4. Terence, Saturday please. The weather lately is super hot and humid in the morning and early afternoon with a short spurt of heavy rain in the late afternoon. If we start at mid afternoon then we have to book a bbq pit near a shelter or all of us have to wear hats/caps/sunglasses.

A picnic will be nice as bbq-ing in the afternoon with the temperature going up to 34 degrees celcius can be torturous for whoever is in charge of the pits.

    As usual, me kaypoh

    Cheers

  5. Hi Geok Suan, Rosalind and fellow members,

yes, weather is hot and humid. But it is going to be hot and humid during April and May.

I am going to Thailand on Monday, and the Song Khran festival will be on 12- 17 April. Like the Thais, I will enjoy spraying water on everybody I meet.

We should swim. Come in shorts, bikinis, slippers or nothing at all. A skirt, also can. Relax and enjoy the heat. This should not prevent us from coming out and enjoy the beach. Dont be shy. We are all over 45. Bring a small towel. Get uncomfortable, go into the water for a dip, and you are back at the BBQ pit.

And seriously, I mean you just need to bring one chicken wing, one sausage or whatever you can find at NTUC, Cold Storage or your local market. There will be a small fee for the basics, we just get it from the local shop, next to the bicycle rental shop. No need to hug the drinks all the water, or the charcoal, plates, etc.

I have a date in mind, since so many of you are shy to suggest a date.

Hi Yew Kwong, LilyH, Dolly, DouglasC,
How about coinciding the monthly cycling at the ECP with this BBQ/picnic event? April or May would be great.

    1. Hi Yew Kwong and fellow members,

YK,, thank you for the suggestion. Tentatively, we shall set the date for the afternoon BBQ at the East Coast Park on Sat, 18 May2013.
Once we complete the booking of the BBQ and obtain the necessary licence, we can treat this date as confirmed.

Timing-wise, it will be held during the afternoon. Likely, as raised by some members, it will be a hot, humid afternoon.
So, shorts, bikinis, slippers, caps, netball or nothing.

There are a few BBQ pits and a carpark there. Please see the map.
If you know of a suitable BBQ pit number, please highlight the pit numbers here. We may have one or two pits, depending on the number of participants.

      More ideas welcome.

  6. Aiyo Terence,
May 2013, you planned for Monthly gathering cum Fleamart mah, not mai?

Nevertheless, not sure if there is any bicycle rental shop there anot. TaiLo will definitely need to find these out first. If there is, how far is the shop versus selected BBQ area mai?

If preferable, it would be best to cycle first b4 BBQ. If not, over-eat, bicycle pengsan liao – over eat lor .. Just my suggestion only la…

I will definitely support this event so long as the date selected does not clashed with my back treatment lor..

    Cheers.. Dolly

  7. Hi Yew Kwong, Dolly, Ros, Geok Suan and everybody,

Thank you for your feedback on the hot weather and convenience. The monthly gathering cum fleamart is not confirmed yet. We are unable to confirm with the owner yet. Too complicated, but we will still wait patiently for a reply.

As for the BBQ gathering at the East Coast Park, today, a kind member has done the booking on our behalf. The pits are C13 & C14. Saturdays are busy days at the East Coast Park, but for many members, it would be nice to have a gathering on Saturday,at the ECP, after such a long long time.

I know the date and timing may not be suitable to some of you; so I would appreciate your understanding. We have to firm the dates and the timings, so that members can jot the dates into their diary early.

We will work the details around these dates and times.

Dolly, the idea is to have an afternoon BBQ lunch at the ECP. If the cycling group goes off their fun ride, after 4pm, this can be fun too.

Registration starts now. You only need to bring 1 sausage, 1 chicken wing or 200 grams of beef or pork. Or one jargon. Simply put your name tag on the sausage or chicken. We have two pits, so enough for all.

For the use of the pits, water, charcoal, oil, utensils, plates, cups, ice, etc, we will charge $5 per person. This will be collected on the day.

If you are able to come and join the other members, please register your name here. Enjoy the beach.

  8. Hi Terence

  9. Re our plans to have an afternoon BBQ. A nice member has offered to book for us a BBQ pit on Sat May 18. Bookings for two pits were done at C13 and C14 about 2-3 weeks ago. All other pits were booked up, and so we decided to book these two pits online. We did not have a look at the place.

Last weekend, I went to the East Coast Park to have a look at the two pits. Behind the pits was a large construction site. It was kind of unsightly, and also, it was a distance from the carpark. After reviewing the location, I have decided to cancel this event, until such a time as we can get a better location or when we have the time.

Apology for not able to inform you earlier as I was out of the country all this while.
Please treat this event as cancelled.
