  1. Tks Terence for organising this VERY BENEFICIAL talk for RETIREES like us.

I would like to register for the retirement talk on May 16.

    Steven

  2. Hi Terence,

Seems i was going to do some research on my own, but i guess this can be more fruitful. So please add me in this meeting.

Most librabries have meeting rooms that can be rented out cheaply, will try to find out the actual cost and let you know.

    Cheers,
    Allrounder

  3. Hi Terence,

Please count me in this meeting. Looking forward to have an early start and get extra tips for my retirement. Thank you.

    Regards,
    Melissa

  4. Steven, you seem to carry a bounce all the time and this time you bounced and rejoiced bcos it will be a very beneficial talk.

So far no one says he is talking on the given topics altho there’ll definitely be some talking and a lot of noise.

Well, gonnan be fun, no less.

  5. Hi Terence and all,

I would like to hear from all, and also like to push for Retirement in Malacca or nearby towns like Seremban or Batu Pahat, Senai, etc.

For me, there are many factors favouring Malaysia as follows:-
    a. Vicinity to Spore by bus, car, train, etc.
    b. Climate is the same,
    c. Food is almost as good or better, same varitey.
    d. Cheap cost of living,
    e. Condos, are better in some aspects.
    f. Medical facilities are cheap and as comprehensive, else it is easy to get back to Spore.
    g. Other services, like Legal documents, will writing is being promoted
    h. Golf courses are plenty,
    i. Other interests – they are need more research,
    j. Lion Club is active in Malaysia and have a friend in Seremban who is the ex-President for the last 4 years and is now an advisor
    k. Shopping not that great but upcoming, with the new Centre being opened early this year.

    l. Dining good and improving , Delifrance and a number of reasonable good Chinese restaurants, Nyonya.

    Only improvements needed :-
    a. Club of members like SHC to feel at home, i know of the Japanese Club that seems ok but there are number of Golf clubs providing
    some social activities.
    c. Work , part time or any , may need some ideas, etc.
    d. Charity work , on your own i guess there are many ways you can do that.

  6. Hi KC,

If you are around the vincinity of this place, please have a look, especially on the space and the cost. Please give your recommendation. Cheers.

  7. Hi Guest,

To want to hear from all will be overly ambitious as we have more than 3k SHCians – but you’ll hear from me for a start.

I believe the uppermost of all considerations, when one is ready to retire, is how much disposable $ one has. Next in importance will of cos be one’s health….is he heathy enough to do this & that by himself?

With more $, one has more choices, and if he is still as fit as a fiddle, the hills of Tibet where he can watch tian zhang (aerial burial whereby big birds devour all the corpse’s flesh)and then prepares oneself for that big day, is ideal.

Malaysia is not too bad a place to retire in….closer to home and you wont hv to miss yr e-ma- ku-ji for long, except e. Condos – some unfinished developments hv been siezed by the courts when the developers go kaput g. “Other services, like Legal documents, will writing” – while the legal system is also the common law system with most legislative enactments similar, the administration of the judicial system may be a lot dissimilar, with back-log cases adding to the bane j. “Lion Club is active in Malaysia and have a friend in Seremban who is the ex-President for the last 4 years and is now an advisor” – I dont see the relevance of this in one’s retirement; and in any case, ex-Presidents seldome wield too much power or influence. Otherwise he wdnt hv been axed.

  8. Hi Tim,
I totally agreed your point of views. For my case of retirement, I wont be considering Malaysia at all.

My guess is that Guest might be a Malaysian, that why you are proposing Malaysia as a retirement village. As for me, I am a vry typical Singaporean, don’t really enjoy coach ride unless they are super VIP which is at least double the price of the normal coaches. Coupled the fact the ai mai attitude of Malaysia immigration custom also kill this idea totally.

I hv numerous friends already kena burnt due to those half completed condos as contractor declared bankrupt hence I am definitely not going pit my hard-earned $$$ on any Malaysia properties at all regardless of how lucrative. I would rather stay put in Spore pigeon hole kind of housing but at least I am sure that my housing will be there no matter what happened. Of cos, I will definitely not able to have much luxuries as compared to those in Malaysia in view of currency conversion rate but I will rather forgo these.

To me, retirement will be good if we can maintain the current life style, if not, I would rather downgrade with enough $$$ to tie over the years with no much worries.

  9. Last year, I wrote that I was 36 years away from retirement. So now, I am 35 years away. Actually, I hope never to retire because I won’t know what to do with all the time on my hands.

Home would ideally be a cosy two-bedroom apartment in well-oiled Singapore with a soulmate who worships the ground I hobble upon with my ivory walking stick…

  10. Not sure how many people have signed up for this and how my new shop would be like. But if it turns out that the group would be small and my new shop is able to accommodate, then well it can be considered for small group meetings as well. Until my design is up and floor space confirmed, this can only be a future alternative.

  11. Terence, I am a hon. advisor to a non-profit society called Jericho Youth Centre located at Bishan Street 22. We hv a meeting room that can easily accomodate 50 people. It you think its suitable as a meeting place for May 16, I can check with our counsellor if the place is available that night. We do not have a set fee for rental of hall but a love offering of say $150 would be welcomed and greatly appreciated. Regards, Vincent

  12. hi
jus to share my experience buying a pty at A’Famosa in Malacca recently for investment and subsequently for retirement purpose. i bought it during their exhibition in SG. i was most impressed by the resort facilties and future development plans. it is also along the N-E Expressway. the developer is the top 3 in MY. so i was convinced it wd be a safe and good investment. the studio unit is abt 600 sft and fully furnished with 8% return for 5 yrs. total cost RM240K. what go me suspicious was it took the developer 3 mths jus to sign the sales/purchase agreement. later, found out that the bank did not approve my loan cos valuation was only RM120K! d’per was trying to get the loan i wanted. i proceeded to cancel the purchase last mth since loan approval is a condition for the purchase. d’per agreed to cancel the purchase and am still waiting for refund after 1 mth! don’t trust buying pty in MY!

  13. According to a reliable source, on the first day of life on earth, 2 were made with 1 conning the other into eating an apple which got stuck in his throat. So, are we not wary that 50% of us are con-people ?

Haha, Dolly, hv not seen you after the D&D so thot you continued dancing away fr S’goon Gdns CC to the Solomon Islands and caused an earthquake there. Nice to read you again.

If one is a big fan of Msia and must retire & die in Msia, perhaps he can consider Sarawak. Still very much pristine with simple folks and a lot safer now that head-hunters have commercialized and do the real head-hunting in executive placements.

Joy, I too am tempted to trade my soul for a mate but unlike you, I need only 1 room with a king0of-king size bed in there. I surely know what to do with all my time …….. pillow fights will be the tantalizer, and in the course, the main course. Yes, well-oiled.

Heeee, if we eat like we did at the D&D, for $30 pax, you’ll definitely want to find future alternatives for us.

Henry, lucky that your ppty purchase was subject to financing approval, and that the valuation was so far-off fr the sale price. Invite us for champagne only when you get your money back, and you might be only into the early days of waiting.

  14. Hi!Terence,
I post it that I would like to join in for the talk but didn’t see it in the comment col.
I’m all in for Vincewong idea for the place in Bishan st 22.
    Tks.
    Catherine Ho

  15. Hi Guys!

Is this Retirement Issues discussion like the Retirement Village group that we already have? Is there anyone going to give a short talk/presentation on his/her ideals and plan for living in another country?

As Terence suggested, those who want to share should indicate their intention and give an idea of the country/topic they want to present. Otherwise it looks like a free-for-all discussion and may end up like the Retirement Village group.

From my experience with the Retirement Village group, I have concluded that most Singaporeans just want to stay short-term in whichever place/country. They are not going to uproot and move, even to JB.

So, yes, if you want to discuss the possibilities of staying a week to 2 months. But, sorry, no if you’re thinking of long-term living.

To those who have considered Malaysia, the experience and horror stories far outweigh the benefits of having your home/holiday retreat there.

On a lighter note, Joy: you want to retire in 35 years time? If you’re an SHC member and at least 45 years old, that’s 80!! We should be discussing Retirement Home for you!!

  16. Hi Kenneth. I would love to retire in Australia, maybe be a small time farmer or buy a little cottage and turn it into little cafe where I can bake my pies and cakes, preferably the latter. Let them try my Hainanese “teh see” and “kopi”. Make small talk with customers and for my favourite customers, chicken rice or Hainanese pork chop as a treat. Sounds good eh? Truly, I do not want to retire in Malaysia too. With all the scams and empty promise in the property scene. Mine is long term stay. Ideally, Spring and fall in Austrlia, Summer and Winter in Singapore. This is my retirement plan only must see whether with time, whether can tahan all the work and if the bones will creak at the slightest bend. But I am looking forward to the gathering in May to hear out some good retirement recommendations. Sweet dreams everyone :D

  17. I will retire in Australia.

Based on realistic day-to-day expenses, I take into account – age, lifestyle, assets, retirement expectations, life expectancy and retire at 65. The annual cost will be $12k-$18K for me to live a modest lifestyle including – home ownership, energy, food, personal care, household goods and services, clothing and footwear, transport, heath services, leisure activities and gifts and alcohol.

The retirement chapter can be the best and most rewarding time of my life. I have a full and active schedule in addition to my work before retirement. I have established a retirement routine that is comfortable, fulfilling, fun and productive. It is a luxury to have time to experiment with choices on my “I’ve Always Wanted to Try” list to get the right fit. I will continue to look after my grand-children, to work part time, to sell flowers and plants from my garden at the Sunday markets, watch TV or movies till morning on Saturday nights, cook yammy food, maintain good relationship with relatives, yum-char with my friends, add some adventurous travel and spend meaningful time volunteering for the community in which I live or research work for the hospitals. Most importantly I take good care of my family, my health, have good companions and spend within my budget.

  18. Hi all,
I am a newbie on this topic but retirement is definitely a topic very close to my heart. I will be at this gathering for sure and would take on Terence’s request for members to talk for 5 minutes.
    See you soon!
    Best/Lesley

  19. Aiyo, Ah Tim, me not so powderful to cause earthquake at any part of the world la… need to work mah…busy la…

Sarawak – not too good a choice either… hv 2 fly i/o of coach ride… lagi expensive lor.. hard to meet up with e-ma ku jie back in Spore also lor.. even with Airasia (not sure if they fly to Sarawak).

Hi Kenneth, you are definitely rite lor.. staying different countries for a couple of weeks/mths would be ideal and when bored liao, back to Spore again provided that one hv sufficient funds to allow this lor..

Nevertheless, it is always to hv dream la… and who knows, it may just turn into reality lor… :)…. Dolly

  20. Hahaha, Dolly, I always see you up but never see you bui or heavy, ok? It’s yr warm & infectious personality which shatters earth & break granites.

Aiyah, if you choose to retire in Sarawak, you choose her as yr home, that means starting a family there and growing it into a kampung – fly i/o for what? There, you find nice colorful hornbills and you can learn to talk their exquisite language, rather than the aye aye one talk all cockerels talk in this tiny red dot.

In the final analysis hor, it’s still no money no talk so one might hv to slog & slog, never dare to retire even when he cannot walk or has teeth to eat mee pok.

  21. Eh, who so kindly put my name up as an attendee huh? That being the case, will really hv to make an effort to turn up, to listen to what beckons after retirement.

Like the likely company and the coffee but whether or not the coffee is likely to come free, it’s not an issue for me. More interested to know who the speakers will be, or will it be a case of 20 odd voices buzzing together like bumble bees? No matter if everyone is happy.

  22. Alamak, I din said that I can attend the gathering leh.. just pen down my tot here only mah… I cant make it on May 16 as I hv class on Wed nite lor..

  23. Hi Terence

I was just putting a comment here. I am a loooooong way off from retirement and will not be at this meeting. So you might want to strike my name off at number 20. Thanks.

    Joy

  24. Hi Terence,

Could you pls add Eileen Lee for the meet as well? BTW, I don’t see Jie’s name in there, could you pls include her name if not already done so?

    Many Thanks
    Lisa Ong

  25. Hi Terence,
Doe I cant attend, but judging from the list hor… I think Caroline Gee or Kenneth should be a good event organizer le… What say you har???

  26. Thanks Dolly for the compliments. Sorry quite busy these three weeks leh. Moving office from Raffles Place to Millenia Tower end of the month. Just started work in December so cannot suka suka take time off. Otherwise kena “fried cuttlefish”. But if next D&D, I will volunteer my services. Also dont forget got to plan tea party to serve Carrot Cake and teh see. Dont worry, kopi also got. Have a good weekend. Warmest Regards :D

  27. I am not going to retire as long as I am still fit and healthy. Nevertheless I am interested to hear what you guys have to say about retirement. Please include Norlinda, Ann To and myself for this interesting gathering!

  28. Though my retirement is a long-long way (waiting for the next 4th PM), just like to plan whats best to eat at Lau Pa Sat bef. retiring to bed !!!

Pls include me to foresee what’s interesting & exciting to do bef/after retirement. See you all on 16 May.

  31. Hi guys!

Looks like we’ve got our 60 participants… BUT only with two comfirmed speakers, Ronald Wi and Jeffrey Wong. I just hope that there will be some more of us who would come forward to share their retirement plans and experiences.

Anyway, I look forward to having a lively and informative meeting.

    Best wishes

    Kenneth

    Re: Concerns

    Terence Seah

  36. Hi Kenneth,

  39. Hi Terence

Last minute problem came up and I may not be able to make it to the meeting. I apologise for the late notice; I would really have liked to attend today to meet up with many new members and also because of the interesting topic. Se you all another time.

    sb

  40. Hi Kenneth & Oi Cheng

Sorry for not able to make it to the meeting as I had a last minute Job to bring a group of Ex-Pat to the Night Safari.

    Regret any inconveniences caused.

    Patrick Yeo

  41. Just like to add on to what Richard Lee mentioned last night about the minimum sum in CPF. If you are not 55 yet, and you have money in your ordinary acct which you are not using for investment or property, you can transfer them to your special acct. The interest rate in your special account is 4% while the ordinary account is, I believe only 2.5%. The amount you can transfer is up to the minimum sum which currently is 94,600. Come July 2007, the minimum sum will be 96K, and thereafter 4K every July.
You can check on the following website for more details. http://mycpf.cpf.gov.sg/Members/home.htm
type minimum sum and click search.
I knew about it too late but I hope those of you who are eligible will take action to grow more money in your CPF with the 4% interest rate. I hope this additional info will help.

  42. Even at 4% interest p.a. it only means if you leave $100 in there, you get $104 at the end of 365 days.

Last nite I put in $25 and this morning I’ll be collecting $187.50………anyone good in maths pls calculate the overnite interest for me.

And 2nite, Home Utd vs SAF, then Man Utd vs Chelsea on wekend, and next Wed AC Milan vs Liverpool……..Oi Cheng, or anyone else, ai mai? But bo bao yah one hor.

  43. Hi Richard Lee and others,

It was V.Good to of members to share the Retirement Talk issues and it BENEFITTED us a lot.

However, this morning when I logged into the CPF homepage,I ……

    Found 2 conflicting versions.

    1) Just like to add on to what Richard Lee mentioned last night about the minimum sum in CPF.

    2) From CPF Homepage.

    Minimun Sum :-

Leave it with the CPF Board.
The Minimum Sum left with the CPF Board currently earns 4% interest per annum. The interest rate is revised every quarter. From July 2007 it is $ 96 000 , 1.5 months more to wait. Currently $94 600.

Q:- Can I transfer my Ordinary Account Savings to Special Account to earn higher interest?

A:Members below 55 years of age may transfer their Ordinary Account savings to top-up their Special Account to the prevailing CPF Minimum Sum.

The transfer enables you to build up more cash savings for retirement, and at the same time, enjoy the higher interest rate for the Special Account. You are advised to plan your long-term funding needs carefully before making the transfer as it is not reversible.

And I am puzzled. If MIN sum already earns 4 % interest per annum, then WHY is there a need to transfer SS from ordinary accont to special account ???

Can some one ENLIGHTENED me please ?

And the MAX .amount to be transferred from my ordinary acct to special account was extremely low NOT the $96 000 as mentioned.
And the transfer is NOT reversible.

I have yet to made a decision coming July 1st.

    Pls. help. I am confused.
    Steven

  44. since bo bao yah – mm mai. 4% is a sure bet. Since you can’t take out your CPF till 55, why not make the most of it so that yu have more to withdraw by the time you are 55.

  45. 4% sure bet meh…..bo geylang-tea hor, how close are you to 55 to expect no change e.g. increase in retirement age, change to withdrawal limits etc but you sure are close to 2nite, 2morow nite, next week nites….

2morow i eat bao he, hor liao you still no 55 so can eat only taosar bao, horfun, hehe.

    So, still mai huh?

  46. Instead of the word “transfer” from ordinary acct to special acct, I should say “top-up” the minimum sum in your special account. Thanks Steven for pointing out to me.

  47. To all SHCs especially those who attended the last meeting at Pret A Manger:

I hope we did have a good time of fellowship and sharing. I would like to thank Terence for his sharing of his retirement dreams and also for the arrangement for the drink vouchers.

To all the speakers: we thank you for your views and comments. I can only say that there are many points of view and we should respect and try to learn from each other.

Yes, the CPF special account interest of 4% is really the “minimum” to many others. But if we consider that it is a compulsory sum set aside, then there is very little else we can do except make full use of the 4%. Unfortunately, the low interest rate at present does nothing else for us. Our savings account pays a pittance, fixed deposits a mite more.

So many are waiting for a “flutter” either at toto, 4D or football. And soon, the government CPF lucky draw. You can trust our “kampong” MP to come up with this idea.

So, Tim Liu, what are the tips and odds of the coming match? I want pau yah one leh!

  48. Kenneth said “…..But if we consider that it is a compulsory sum set aside, then there is very little else we can do except make full use of the 4%.” Say it again Sam, or rather Kenneth, I like it..and how true !

Well, invested $315 2nite and got back $538.50 in the Home vs SAF match….not too bad considering that those jokers on the field worked hard to make me money.

2mrow’s Man Utd vs Chelsea? Likely a draw. Frankly, I am no wiser than the best of soccer pundits but is confident that AC Milan will ride roughshod over Liverpool come Wednesday.

Cheers all & hv a great wkend.

  49. Hi Tim,

Saw your name on the Retirees talk but u were NOT present.

Why ? Afraid that Terence will bring in more of the Creepy Crawlies for you to sample again from BKK.

Also you are the one that SPECIALLY requested for the creepy crawlies
( BKK varieties) from Terence but DISAPPOINTED to see that when I offered you one , you did NOT even dare to touch one ,
    NOT to mention EATING one.

    Come on man. Bo chee!
Say it but dare not walk the talk.

    Adios Steven

ps. V. Sorry to ACCIDENTALlY hit you too hard on your shoulder during the Botanic Outing while joking .

Never realise the strength from my palm.
Must have been exercising too hard at the gym.

  50. Steven, you seem to have an illicit affection for me, stalking me to an affliction even tho I was just 1 of the 67 odd attendees. But if you had been more complete in watching me, you wd hv read that I was a doubtful starter. Fortunately for the piano teacher that you missed my posting otherwise knowing yr obsession for me, you wd hv waylaid her to make me attend.

So obviously you must be excited at the prospect of the gay movement gaining strength?

The creepy crawlies were SPECIALLY requested for you. You didnt disappoint, swallowing 1 after another like no 2morow. Yes I didnt touch any of the crawlies knowing how hard you’d worked overnite to empty yr bowels with laxatives so that yr stomach cd fill in all the charred insects. You certainly showed a lot of chee everywhere, talking to the insect corpses as you tried to make them walk…..it was a hilarious sight.

I too ACCIDENTALlY twisted yr palm but of cos I enjoyed such accidents. Forget abt exercising at the gym, go book a chinese sinseh bcos there’s where my next twist will land you for mths.

  51. Hi Tim,

Tim wrote ….You certainly showed a lot of chee everywhere, talking to the insect corpses as you tried to make them walk…..???? it was a hilarious sight.

I talk to SHC humans not dead corpses. And so STOP exaggerating.

Obviously, from what you have written above, I think you are getting ABNORMAL.

    Adios,
    Steven

  52. Since last year students at New Town Secondary are more relieved going to school and have more reasons to celebrate youth day. They are getting normal, back to normal.

  53. Hi Oi Cheng,

Thanks for CLARIFYING over the phone abt the transfer from Ordinary to Special Account by using the CPF Minimun Retirement Sum and also for your advice to TOP up twice.

It should be TOP UP instead of Transferring as most of us heard from the Talk.

    Thanks again.
    Steven

  54. After I left the gathering, I heard there were some intense discussions on the minimum sum, queries on auto-trading and the social enterprise project.

I shall pull out some of the emails communicated and share with you.
