Phobias

When I read definitions of Phobia:

A phobia is an irrational and excessive fear of an object or situation. These fears can interfere with an individual’s life and lead to considerable anxiety and stress …”

A persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not …”

I was, like, hey, sounds like most SHC members……….fear of writing/chatting.  Kekekekeeee.

Seriously, darlings, we are in this club not just to attend activities/gatherings etc, we are also here to make frens and to know others, let us hear your thoughts, views, experience etc.

So, tell us your phobias.  I shall start with mine.

I was totally, totally petrified of cats when I was young but thank goodness I have overcome it.  To cut a long story short, I sat ten feet away from a fren’s cat and the cat seemed to know I was scared of her and she approached me very slowly while my heart was pounding to death.  Finally she climbed on my lap, again extra slowly, laid down and fell asleep.

I thought I would die but surprisingly, my panic gradually subsided and I even stroked her!  From then on, my fear of cats slowly disappeared; thanks to this sweet, adorable cat.

Your turn.

  1. Geraldine, thanks for starting this blog. When I was younger, my phobia is just seeing a needle. Before the doctor can insert I will faint. It happened during my army days on a few occasion.
Another phobia is just seeing blood. Once I went to an accident scene wanting to help if any, instead I was carried back to a church nearby.
Now I insert needle everyday in my body, no sweat lah!
    Dan.

  2. Gosh, i have a long lust. I have fear of water, darkness, heights, the unknown – spooky type, etc etc. With age and help, i managed to overcome some of them. But still no horror movies for me. Maybe because i have a wild imagination.

I always imagined the person sleeping nex to me can turn into Casper!

    Cheers
    Carly

  3. Like Dan, I have phobias of the needles too. I couldn’t even watch someone getting an injection on TV.

Die die will never go for botox….. sigh >,< Heheh.... Botox.... our next conversational topic?

  4. Thank you, Dan for sharing your previous needle phobia.

I used to have apprehension when I was about to take a jab and would turn my head away and one day I decided to LOOK at being jabbed, thinking at worst I would faint and the professionals were there to revive me. Heehee.

Blood……….hmmm, many people faint at the sight of it. I had a major blackout a long time ago when I looked at the packet of blood dripping intravenously after someone had an operation. The worst part was I did not even know I passed out; only knew what happened after I regained consciousness. Yeeee……

  5. Poor Caroline, all those lusts……..excuse me, I mean the list of phobias!!

Casper is soooo cute! I love him. Ya, others may not be cute like him so it can be scary.

May I suggest you imagine the something next to you turns into your favorite cupcakes, YUMMIE, ice kachang, SLURP………..

Let us know if this helps.

    Thanks for sharing.

  6. Oh, Lily, so you have the same phobia as Dan’s. He has overcome this fear, perhaps one day you will, too.

I think the way to deal with this is not to look at it in the first place when you need a jab and start to think of the to-do list after the jab or think of something funnie etc – something to distract your mind. I used this method until I boldly stared at it in the eye and found it fascinating.

‘Heheh…. Botox…. our next conversational topic?’

Orh. Kekekekee; just could not resist. Pardon moi.

  7. Just came across this ‘definition’ which says:

“Fears are like annoying relatives. You can’t avoid them forever, and ignoring them won’t make them go away.”

Could not help but giggled cuz it sounds rite. Shall visit THOSE relatives soon……kakakakaa.

  8. Talking about phobias, like Caroline, I have a “lust”…excuse me, list too.

One dramatic episode was when I visited a friend in hospital. The stork had just brought her bundle of joy.

Upon arrival she propped herself up on the bed. I bent over to hug and congratulate her. The next split second what I saw was unforgettable. Still vividly in my mind, was this pool of blood spread right on the pristine white sheet glaring back at me. I passed out! When I came around, other relatives and a couple of nurses were hovering over me. I was lying on the patient’s bed! Sooo embarrassing…

I have overcome this phobia a little, and have not fainted at the sight of blood since that time :-)

  9. When young I have great fear of funerals. Whenever, there’s one around the neighbourhood, I would try very hard to find detour to bypass funeral sites to get home. If there’s one just below my flat, you will find me coop up in the house after coming back from school. The sight of olden days huge, wooden coffins frighten me till these days .

  10. Geraldine, I’d rather wake up to find a huggy bear nex to me.
Ginko, I am afraid of blood too. But i dont pengsan like you.
Constance, i always make a detour whenever there is a funeral near where i live. And like you, its bcos of the big black box. And yes, up till today i still have that fear. Hiaz…. Is there something i am not afraid of?
