Video created by Veronica Kok, EO Alice Tan BK. Sun 26 mthly gathering

The Mar mthly gathering was just over. Held at the Esplanade, unser the Helix bridge, the event went on very well. The weather was absolutely kind to all of us.

Alice, I am glad that there is tremendous show of fellow members getting together to get to know one another.

An Veron’s video is really fantastic. It captures the occasion very well. Under the open skies and Singapore’s most modern skyline, the singers sang and entertained fellow members.

So many helping hands. I thank the committee for the great show, the singers, the members who prepared the potluck, and the volunteers who picked up the lost sheep from the meeting point.

Share this video with your friends.

There has been a recent push again to make our LPA online. LPAs concern seniors.

Pls see this video clip before attending zoom discussion.

Cycling for Seniors

Most seniors like us turn to low-impact exercises and cycling is one to stay healthy in old age. We don’t have to be a great athlete to enjoy a ride.

Benefits (just to name a few):-

  • Indoor stationery or outdoor cycling improves balance and leg strength.
  • Give us more strength and stamina over time.
  • A great way to improve our mental health, is ideal for seniors who suffer from memory loss…
  • Is FUN and great supports for socializing when done in Groups ~ a great way to meet new friends.

EO – Douglas Chan (joined since 2005), our cycling enthusiast will guide you along your every trip, be it SG or JB.

My suggestion for silver hairs club – enhance the ideas

Here are some suggestions to enhance a silver hairs club.

  1. Offer a variety of activities: Seniors enjoy a wide range of activities, from exercise classes to social events. Make sure to offer a variety of options to cater to everyone’s interests and abilities.  .
  2. Create opportunities for socialization: Seniors often face social isolation, so it’s important to provide opportunities for them to connect with others. This could include coffee mornings, games, and group outings.
  3. Provide education and learning opportunities: Many seniors are eager to continue learning and exploring new topics. Offer classes or lectures on subjects that interest them, such as history, art, or current events.
  4. Incorporate technology: While not all seniors are tech-savvy, many are interested in learning more about technology. Provide classes or workshops on using smartphones, social media, or other digital tools.
  5. Invite guest speakers: Bring in guest speakers to talk about topics of interest to seniors, such as health and wellness, retirement planning, or local history.
  6. Offer volunteer opportunities: Seniors often have a wealth of experience and knowledge to share with others. Provide opportunities for them to volunteer in the community or within the club itself.
  7. Create a welcoming environment: Make sure that all members feel welcome and included, regardless of their background or abilities. Encourage a sense of community and belonging by celebrating members’ birthdays and other milestones.

Item 4 and 6 are looking forward to enhance it – looking forward for more volunteer to leverage the task.

How i budget my monthly expense

Managing personal finances is an important aspect of maintaining a stable and healthy lifestyle. It involves keeping track of expenses, creating budgets, and making informed financial decisions. There are two main types of expenses to consider when managing personal finances: fixed and variable expenses.

Fixed expenses are costs that remain the same each month, such as rent or mortgage payments, car payments, and insurance premiums. These expenses are essential and usually cannot be avoided. Fixed expenses are predictable and can be planned for in advance, making it easier to create a budget.

Variable expenses, on the other hand, are costs that can fluctuate from month to month. These expenses include things like groceries, entertainment, and travel. They are often discretionary expenses and can be adjusted based on your needs and priorities. It is important to monitor variable expenses carefully and make adjustments as necessary to avoid overspending.

When managing personal finances, it is essential to consider both fixed and variable expenses. By understanding the difference between the two types of expenses, you can create a budget that reflects your priorities and financial goals. This will help you to manage your money more effectively and avoid unnecessary debt.

For example, let’s consider a typical monthly budget that includes both fixed and variable expenses. Fixed expenses might include rent or mortgage payments, car payments, and insurance premiums. These expenses will likely add up to several hundred or even thousands of dollars each month. Variable expenses might include groceries, entertainment, and travel. These expenses can vary widely from month to month depending on your lifestyle and spending habits.

Suppose you have a monthly income of $3,000 and your fixed expenses amount to $1,500. This leaves you with $1,500 for variable expenses. You might allocate $400 for groceries, $200 for entertainment, $100 for travel, and so on. By creating a budget and tracking your expenses carefully, you can ensure that you are living within your means and avoiding unnecessary debt.

In conclusion, managing personal finances is a crucial skill that everyone should develop. Understanding the difference between fixed and variable expenses is essential for creating a budget that reflects your priorities and financial goals. By tracking your expenses carefully and making informed financial decisions, you can manage your money more effectively and avoid unnecessary debt.

Fixed expenses are those expenses that do not change or fluctuate with the level of activity or usage. They are typically recurring expenses that are paid on a regular basis, often monthly or annually. Examples of fixed expenses include rent, insurance premiums, loan payments, and subscription fees.

Variable expenses, on the other hand, are expenses that change based on the level of activity or usage. They tend to be more flexible and are not always recurring expenses. Examples of variable expenses include utilities, transportation costs, entertainment expenses, and groceries.

Part II : Here is an example of a list of fixed and variable expenses:

Fixed expenses:

  • Rent/mortgage
  • Property taxes
  • Insurance premiums
  • Loan payments (e.g., car loan, student loan)
  • Membership fees (e.g., gym membership, professional association fees)
  • Subscription fees (e.g., Netflix, Spotify)

Variable expenses:

  • Utilities (e.g., electricity, gas, water)
  • Transportation costs (e.g., gas, public transit fares)
  • Entertainment expenses (e.g., dining out, movie tickets)
  • Groceries
  • Clothing and personal care expenses
  • Home maintenance and repair expenses

It’s important to track both fixed and variable expenses to get a complete picture of your spending habits and to help you make informed financial decisions.

Part III : My budget from $1500 reduce to $549.17

Item Cost
Rental $200
Mobile $5
Credit card $100
Food $200
Transport $30
Town council $14.17
Total $549.17

How to perserve my peranakan culture with simple effort.

Peranakan culture is a unique blend of Chinese and Malay traditions that has evolved over centuries in Southeast Asia. If we would like to preserve this rich cultural heritage, here are some simple efforts can take:

  1. Learn about Peranakan culture: Educate yourself about the history, customs, and practices of the Peranakan community. Read books, watch documentaries, attend talks, and visit museums.
  2. Cook Peranakan food: The cuisine is a significant part of the Peranakan culture. You can learn to cook traditional dishes and share them with your family and friends.
  3. Use Peranakan-inspired decor: Incorporate Peranakan-inspired decor into your home. You can use traditional fabrics, ceramics, and furnishings.
  4. Wear Peranakan-inspired clothing: Wear Peranakan-inspired clothing, such as sarongs, kebayas, and batik prints.
  5. Attend Peranakan events: Attend Peranakan cultural events and festivals. You can learn more about the culture, meet members of the community, and support local artisans.
  6. Support Peranakan businesses: Buy from Peranakan-owned businesses to support the community and help preserve their cultural heritage.
  7. Share your knowledge: Share your knowledge and experiences with others. Educate your family, friends, and community about Peranakan culture and its significance.

International Women Day 2023

Happy International Women’s Day! On this special day, I want to express my love, appreciation, and empathy towards all the incredible women out there. You are the backbone of society, the nurturers of families, and the catalysts of change.

I want you to know that your struggles, your triumphs, and your voices are heard and valued. Your kindness, empathy, and resilience inspire us all. I hope that you always feel supported, respected, and loved.

May we continue to work towards a world where women are not only celebrated but also have equal rights and opportunities. May we raise our children to be respectful and empathetic towards all genders, and may we work together to build a better, more inclusive world for all.

Once again, Happy Women’s Day! Keep spreading love and empathy, and know that you are cherished.

Bangkok Trip 26 – 29 March 2023

Updates!!!
Hotel chosen : Ibis Bangkok Siam
Flight Details
26/03 SIN – BKK Scoot608 Depart 0700 Arriving 0830
29/03 BKK – SIN Scoot605 Depart 1455 Arriving 1820

Cost (Flight & Hotel) : $372.15/pax
a) Based on twin sharing @ Ibis Hotel.  For 1 single, the cost is estimated at $496/pax.
b) Handcarry bag (7kg) only
c) 15kg Baggage, extra charge of $54 for both ways
d) Departing on the next morning timing, will be incurring another $17 extra/pax
e) You will need to get travel insurance individually which we can map out later

Both Pattiya and I are planning a F&E Bangkok Trip from March 26 – 29 2023. This trip will be done solely on own timing/agenda as well as going thru obstacles with public transport – BTS and MRT, buses and others.

Maximum to go : 16 fully paid members (inclusive of Pattiya and myself), we still go ahead even we dont have 16 members.

POIs intended to adventure are as follows:

  1. Iconsiam- White Orchard River Cruise – Dinner Cruise
  2. Leng Saap Restaurant – Strongly recommended by Pattiya for their speciality – Pork Ribs
  3. Maeklong Railway Market (hope tht I got this place right) – interesting place whereby both train and market peddlars are using the same location giving way to each other whenever needed.  A POI that definitely a go.
  4. As for night market, as there are too many locations these days so we will choose 1 once we confirmed the hotel that we intended to stay
  5. Not forgetting spa and massages to look out for too.
  6. For those interested for shopping – maybe can try if 1 can get Korean Hanbo for the coming SHC D&D – Good suggestions right…
  7. For those keen of cafe hunting for coffees and cakes, there will be no short of these too.
  8. Last but not least, night spots to enjoy before we headed home

For 4D/3N, the above POIs will keep us very busy, I am sure.

I will be checking on the airfare/hotel packages thru travel agent first as the last check for online booking for both airfare/hotels will be around $330/pax based on the twin sharing.  My personal preference will be if Travel Agent’s quote is only less more that $50+, we will go for travel agent’s arrangement.  Of course, I am not stopping those to go direct to book online but on 1 clause, try to get the same hotel to save time

I would also like to advise for those going for this trip that have not taken 4th jab, to go for flu jab for protection.

Members going:
1) Pattiya
2) Dolly Lim
3) Alan Ang
4) Cheng WK

SHC One night in Seoul

Place and date not decided.

One night in Seoul is a theme Dinner & Dance. This event is part of a series of one night events, held previously in Shanghai, Bangkok, Johor, Hongkong, Taipei and Tokyo.

This year, we move to Seoul. We plan for 100 pax, but if the organisation goes well, we may do 150 or 200 pax.

1. We start by identifying the ballroom, capable of between 100 and 200 pax.

2. Recruiting membets able to sing popular korean songs.

3. Once venue jdentified, we piece together a reception team, a F&B and decor team, a participation team, a music team, etc.

4. After venue, we look for a band or music system to meet our requirements.

Suggestions on the lookout on this forum.

HUAT ah… Abundance of Wealth and Long Life

A Combinatorial Chinese New Year Tradition – is a festive ritual that brings families, relatives and friends together to invoke wishes for year ahead. A magical moment or bonding, “tossing up good fortune” – the higher they are mixed and lifted, the more prosperity it is intended to bring.

Coupled with the loud and joyous HUAT AH!!! – this colourful tossing is a boisterous Lunar New Year highlight with each ingredient has a symbolic, auspicious phrase to be exclaimed as it is added to the platter.

Wishing all SHC Members a HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR 2023…

Valentine Day mid Feb 2023 – Closed

Since school days, Valentine Day has always strike us of dating classmates and friends.

This, day, we take this event to remember everybody we love. Remember our parents, our children, even our pets, colleagues and friends.

Valentine can take on a different meaning as we get older. There is still the spouse that has been with us for many years, or the daughter or son.

Of course valentine Day has become very commercial. I have asked Jean Lim to create this romantic evening our memories and enjoyment.

Date, Place not set yet.

Chinese New year lunch 3rd week January 2023

Every year the club organizes a Chinese New year event. This could be a lunch or a dinner.

We try to make this event very Chinese where everybody comes in in Chinese dress. We bring in mandarin oranges and exchange with one another. We also exchange angpows.

Some years, we have a sit-down dim sum lunch, other years a 10-course lunch.

But whatever it is, it is usually difficult to secure a place, and the lunch could be pretty expensive.

Chinese New year is very memorable to many of us, and we try to have many of us attend together.

SilverHairsclub as many talented entertainers. If you like to create something different with the Chinese New year mood, please contact me asap.

In 2021, I lost my left leg.

In August 2022 I lost my right leg. The left leg is called doggy and the right leg is called kangaroo.

In August 2022 I had a heart attack, I just had a balloon down on one of the three others. So far so good.

I’m moving to ang Mo kio gor tehahab. I’m not so sure what kind of super duper gear I’m going to have.

Yes the club is looking at possibilities of having new organization

They’ll be new activities too. Please support the new team.

Finding a new SHC management

Dear SHC members,

We have been working on renewing our management last 5 years. However, we have not been successful finding a volunteer management team, especially a team leader, after 17 years in operation.

The Silverhairsclub is still looking for a leadership change to take charge for the next 5 years.

Intro Jasmine Wong

From time to time, I like to introduce members of the club, so we get to know them better. Jasmine jpined SHC in 2021.

JasmineW
Professionally, Jasmine plays the roles of both a Real Estate Agent and a Tourist Guide. Both professions are closely related – she conducts relocation tours to help visitors become familiar with Singapore, focusing on helping potential migrants orientate and settle down.

She handles tours like HDB Heartland Tour, Urban Planning Tour, Chinatown Historic District Tour and Rediscover Marina Bay Tour all serve to give visitors an appreciation of the essence of living in Singapore.

Pastime, she loves playing harmonica and doing craft.

Jasmine used to run a 24 hour internet cafe and an art & craft retail outlet in different locations. She has since given up on all the brick and mortar stores and operate only an online art & craft store.

She also enjoys a variety of activities on a weekly basis, e.g. walking, swimming and cycling. Likes making new friends and enjoy interesting conversations sharing life experiences. These different businesses, activities and people make her life, a colourful mould.

Jasmine volunteers in a number of Silverhairsclub activities.
