July Monthly Meeting – 17th July Sunday 2pm to 5pm. EO Ronald Wi.

Toa Payoh Hub – Gourmet Paradise – Food Court (Basement 1 at Bus Interchange, Mrt exit A)

Attractions- Famous rojak, Salmon Fish Head Soup (rare) Nasi Padang, Hougang Muah Chee, Soup King ( biggest one) etc, etc

It may be a bit busy – but there is ample space especially at the back. It is also good time to know which are the really good stalls, with long Qs – especially the famous TP Rojak

The co-EO, each, can be the smaller group leader to discuss/share their various interests, expertise so members can a have a chance to be more open minded, to listen, etc.

At the same time is a weekend, everyone can be more relax, but free to go around different groups and pick and join each group topic of interests.

In this way too, we can encourage all members to form a group to organize the next monthly meeting so an individual do not have to be stress all alone, right?

Lastly as you all noticed there is no cut-off registration time, so anyone can join in, in this meeting at any time. Feel free to bring friends to introduce them to SHC too.

I do not have to make any reservations for any food or seats, so feel free to come at anytime within 2 to 5pm

Dengue fever advisory

Subject: FW: *TRAVEL ADVISORY* – MALAYSIA : INCREASE DENGUE FEVER CASES

ISOS has issued a medical alert on the increase of dengue fever in Malaysia. Four deaths and more than 1,630 cases were recorded nationwide from January 4 to January 10. The state of Perlis showed a 150% increase followed by Sabah, Kelantan and Penang. Kuala Lumpur showed a 50% increase in the number of cases.

The Disease

Dengue or "break-bone" fever is a viral disease found in tropical and sub-tropical areas. There are four strains, DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 and DEN-4. It is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. This insect bites during the day and is often found in and around human habitation.

Symptoms of dengue include high fever, severe headache, cough, and joint and muscle pain. A rash often follows these symptoms. The acute illness can last up to ten days, and complete recovery can take two to four weeks.

Occasionally, a potentially fatal form of dengue called dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) occurs. DHF  usually occurs in patients who have previously been infected  with one strain of dengue fever, then contract a different strain of the disease.

There is no vaccine against dengue fever. Preventing mosquito bites is the only way to prevent the disease.

Prevent bites while outdoors:

      ·         Wear light-colored clothing that covers most of the body (long sleeves and long pants).

Use insect repellent that contains DEET. Adults and children more than two months of age can use preparations containing up to 35% DEET – the higher the concentration, the longer it repels. Longer acting preparations are also available. Re-apply after swimming or excessive sweating.

Prevent bites while indoors or asleep:

·         Check that there is fly-wire on the windows.

·         Use "knock-down" insect spray to kill mosquitoes in your room.

·         Use mosquito coils or electric insecticide vaporizers if mosquitoes can get into your room.

·         Note that air conditioning also repels mosquitoes.

·         Consider using a bed net impregnated with pyrethrin.

Seek medical attention if you develop a high fever, especially if you suffer "rigors" (shaking) or a rash.

If need read about Dengue fever cure posted by Maggie Teo about ‘Papaya Juice (from the leaf)  as a cure’.  .

New Year Resolutions, Reflections, RV plans, dreams, etc

Hi Terence and all,

Reflecting on our RV plans of the past which have not materialise, I cannot help but to post this idea of an RV alternative.  I am looking to rent a condo unit either in JB or even Malacca  that can be a 2nd home for me, as I think it wil be much cheaper living there.   So I am  thinking of renting such a unit that is within easy reach of public transport and is in a good safe location.

I am prepared to let out a room/rooms for SHC members for overnight stay either enjoying shopping, massage, makan or even for overnight MJ or for travel stops on their way up north.  This condo unit should or will be set up with cable tv, internet  and all necessary facilities like washing machine, kitchen for cooking etc.  This idea came about too from the very good response of my weekly JB trips that I had at times had to make 2 trips in a week.

So anyone in a group wanting to really feel what is like staying in JB can book the room at a very reasonable cost to stay over for a night or for as long as they want.

Will also welcome any ideas to expand such a plan, as I think  there are quite a few things one can enjoy in nearby JB besides the cheaper food, massage, karaoke, dancing, hair styling, tailoring, car services etc, is the slower pace of life there, or taking up cheaper courses in JB.  Some special courses that cost $3000 in Singapore cost the same amount in M$3000 and therefore can be quite a saving.

Cheers

Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year 2009

Hi all,

Have we forgotten how to wish, dream and to have faith?

If we did, let us try to put some cheer to others around us in any way we can.  So here is wishing everyone a MERRY XMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR 2009, and le us try to count our blessings no matter how little it may be now and hope things gets better.

Terence, seems a little too quiet for you to be alone this holiday, call me to join a group of us going to JB for a makan spree this Sunday.

Travel Insurance anyone knows of any better offer?

Hi all,

Since it is the start of the season for travel it is also good to ensure you are adequately covered for your overseas travel in case of any emergencies, flight delays or lost luggage, etc.

I just got a call from Citibank this morning for an offer of a year’s travel coverage worldwide including Malaysia for only $137 ( from ACE insurance it is supposedly $150).  Since it is a year’s coverage you are free from having to fill up your travel details everytime you travel out.  The coverage also includes lost items due to theft , lost luggage , hijacking, medical and personal liability coverage, etc.

So I guess with this settle, I can travel at least with some comfort in mind.  Anyone knows of any better offers? Terence , can you share with us your coverage plan and details and the repayment of your laptop due to theft that happen last year?

By the way, ACE insurance also covers personal protection for sporting, accidental injuries or illness and hospitalisation coverage while you are in Singapore or overseas for a monthly premium of about $25.  With me roller blading, cyclng , and travelling most of the time I guess it is better to be protected.

Starfruit is it true?

This is not an April Fool Joke. But a stern reminder to all my readers. We were advised to have a few servings of fruits a day in order to rep the benefits of fruits right? But obviously this is one big no-no fruit to be excluded from your fruity feast!

In Shenzen, more than 10 people who consumes the star fruit had died. And now a 66-year-old, Malaysian who has been suffering from kidney ailment fell into coma after eating the start fruits. Yes, all it takes is one fruit or 100ml of its juice and the ordinarily harmless star fruit transforms poison in a matter of hours for kidney patients. So does this mean, people without kidney problems should be fine with star fruit! My take: Not at all! Prevention is better right?

Universiti Malaya Medical Centre consultant nephrologist said that star fruits contain a neurotoxin which is not present in other fruits. It affects the brain and nerves. In healthy persons, the kidneys filter it out. But for those with kidney problems, this potent toxin cannot be removed and will worsen the consumers’ conditions.

The symptoms of start fruit poisoning include:
~Hiccups
~Numbness and weakness
~Feeling confused
~Agitation
~Epileptic fist

The risk of death is high if you are having kidney ailments!
But healthy individuals should beware of this fruit’s potential toxin too. It could also cripple your vitality if you are not lucky. So don’t take it for granted. It’s better to avoid them. Please pass this news to others

Only share this good sense of humour (NOT humor)!

Hi All,

Sharing this colourful English humour from (Jennifer Wong),  admist all the financial dark cloud.

To the Citizens of the United States of America from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth  II

In
light of your failure in recent years to nominate competent candidates
for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give
notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately.

(You should look up ‘revocation’ in the Oxford English Dictionary.)

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties
over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except Kansas, which
she does not fancy).

Your new Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections.

Congress and the Senate will be disbanded.  A questionnaire may be
circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. The letter ‘U’ will be reinstated in words such as ‘colour,’
‘favour,’ ‘labour’ and ‘neighbour.’  Likewise, you will learn to
spell ‘doughnut’ without skipping half the letters,  and the
suffix ‘-ize’ will be replaced by the suffix ‘-ise.’  Generally,
you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable
levels.  (look up ‘vocabulary’).

2. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises
such as ”like’ and ‘you know’ is an unacceptable and inefficient form
of communication. There is no such thing as U.S. English. We will let
Microsoft know on your behalf.  The Microsoft spell-checker will
be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter ‘u” and the
elimination of  ‘-ize.’

3. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

4. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns,
lawyers, or therapists.  The fact that you need so many lawyers
and therapists shows that you’re not quite ready to be
independent.  Guns should only be used for shooting grouse.
If you can’t sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a
therapist, then you’re not ready to shoot grouse.

5. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything
more dangerous than a vegetable peeler.  Although a permit will be
required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

6. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will
start driving on the left side with immediate effect.  At the same
time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit
of conversion tables.   Both roundabouts and metrication will
help you understand the British sense of humour.

7. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been
calling gasoline) of roughly $10/US 20 gallon.  Get used to
it.——————-8. You will learn to make real chips.  Those
things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you
insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps.  Real
chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup
but with vinegar.

9. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually
beer at all.  Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be
referred to as beer, and European brews of  known and accepted
provenance will be referred to as Lager.  South African beer is
also acceptable, as they are pound for pound the greatest sporting
nation on earth, and it can only be due to the beer.  They are
also part of the British Commonwealth – see what it did for them.
American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat’s Urine, so
that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

10. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as
good guys.  Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors
to play English characters.  Watching Andie Macdowell attempt
English dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin
to having one’s ears removed  with a cheese grater.

11. You will cease playing American football.  There is only one
kind of proper football; you call it soccer.  Those of you brave
enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some
similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a
rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a
bunch of nancies).

12. Further, you will stop playing baseball.  It is not reasonable
to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played
outside of America.  Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a
world beyond your borders, your error is understandable.  You will
learn cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans first to
take the sting out of their deliveries.

13. You must tell us who killed JFK.  It’s been driving us mad.

14. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty’s
Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all
monies due (backdated to 1776).—————15. Daily Tea Time begins
promptly at 4 p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with
high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with
cream) when in season.

God Save the Queen!  Cheers

Live Edge Competition – Anyone ?

Hi all,
If anyone has an idea and wishes to work with others to conceptualise it commercially, here will be a good opportunity to have it evaluated, and maybe win a prize too.  If however you are interested to work in a team as you feel you have half of what it takes then email me to work as a team, bswi@yahoo.com.  I do have many crazy ideas, and have the electronic engineering experience in past projects, but do need a strong partner as I have what is termed as ‘fuzzy logic’ when I engaged in designing. Thus a methodical, task manager who is flexible and who is as passionate about being creative is the partner/partners I am looking for in this competion for fun or just to keep our minds active.
Prizes Worth Winning
Two unique prize packages are up for grabs for the winners of Live EDGE’s student and general/open competitions, which run concurrently. Submit your design for the chance to see its journey from concept to live creation.

Winning Package

The lucky winner of each competition will receive a $25,000 (USD) cash award, plus a unique package of support services from experts in the fields of Design Consultancy, Marketing, Legal, and Commerce to drive the winning designs towards production.

The value of each support package is worth an additional $25,000 (USD) and includes:

Design Support

  • Introduction to a high-profile Electronic Design Consultancy to help move your design towards production using their invaluable resource and expertise.

Legal Support

  • Guidance and funding assistance to lead you through the maze of Intellectual Property rights, patents, contracts and complex legal processes.

Marketing Support

  • PR & Marketing funding assistance
  • Access to a leading-edge global PR agency to publicize you and your winning design.
  • Development of a unique multi-channel marketing program to take your design to market.
The winner will also be invited to form part of next year’s prestigious judging panel alongside key industry leaders and renowned technical experts from around the world!

Honourable mentions

Six designs (3 student, 3 general) are eligible to win a cash sum of $5,000 (USD) each and an honorable mention in all publicity literature.
Submit your designs from October 1, 2008 through January 31, 2009.

Sunday morning Reflections

Having a break after all the manual washing living on this rented room, old rustic bungalow, without fridge,air-con,washing machine, but  with a big forested like garden, bird chirping away near my window I can’t help but recall my RV dream of settling in country side Thailand.

But then again, since I was back in Dec 2007( after a few months near Phuket), many, many beatiful things happen (finding a job, new friends, new interests, etc) much through SHC that somehow makes it harder to think of RV in Malaysia or Thailand, but who knows what destiny can bring.  The point is that SHC can bring you  that much more closer to your dream if you are careful, open minded, take your time to discover the chaff from all the flares,  and not turning it  into a nightmare instead. I now discovered that with the many frends I have made, that i could easily get a few friends to go on a short notice to Malacca or for a night of Karaoke easily.

Before I  rant on within the 15 mins I have, before going for our weekly ritual badminton that we all have come to love, I just want to comment Patrick for being strong as big as  a boulder as he is to offer his services in travel, betting and advisory on heart matters.  I symphatised with him as at times SHC seems to be ready for a truly good ground for  a matured, heart opening, no holds barred,  exciting place to have a forum on anything that interest SHC members. So Patrick keep on, you have my support as I think we will get there someday soon.  Briefly a forum is to have different conflicting views aired to provide an avenue for set minds to learn of other people’s point of views and looking at facts from different angles discovering realms of possibilities that is left undiscovered or never thought possible.  Many of us have discovered and realise that we could do more things as a group which I will share.

Back to achievements or dreams that I or a few have wanted to do and have done the past year. The cycling group has got more interesting discovering new challengers, like cycling to Pengarang, Desaru, 60 km /120km rides.   Adventure (SHAG ) group was initiated organising challenging walks of 12 km up and down Bukit timah hill and climaxing to the top of Mt Ophir and back safely.  Water rafting up Ipoh, with Caving and Rafflesia hunting were also clocked by those who were keen with such things.  On roller blading did the night 10Km blading from ECP to Downtown East, and finally yesterday, did roller blading to CV and back with Kat and Stella ( who must have done her longest skate ever although she almost made it there).

From never doing any kind of dancing before (shy, etc) i have love to do line dance and also social dancing. On Country line dance now I have discovered Monday nights free dance jam (thanks to Rosalind), and on Sept 12 hopefully we have our ‘Love for Country line dance jam with Hamidah ‘ at NSRCC an event that can spark greater interest among new and old members.

On Sept 13 the Mid Autumn event I hope we can have the maximum number of Karaoke singers turn up , as I will make sure everyone will have a chance to have your  stage, and Caroline our Singing Queen will be there too.  I am trying to find someone who can be kind enough to lend us a karaoke machine with ‘automatic’ scoring so that we can have a friendly unbiased scoring or feedback system to select our top karaoke singers and also for general feedback.  Anyone with such a Karaoke player to lend ?  Cheers.

Amusing, Male or female characteristics?

FREEZER BAGS: They are male, because they hold everything in, but you
can see right through them.

PHOTOCOPIERS: These are female, because
once turned off; it takes a while to warm them up again. They are an
effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can
also wreak havoc if you push the wrong Buttons.

TIRES: Tires are male,
because they go bald easily and are often over inflated

HOT AIR
BALLOONS: Also a male object, because to get them to go anywhere, you
have to light a fire under their butt.

SPONGES: These are female,
because they are soft, squeezable and retain water.

WEB PAGES: Female,
because they’re constantly being looked at and frequently getting hit
on.

TRAINS: Definitely male, because they always use the same old lines
for picking up people.

EGG TIMERS: Egg timers are female because, over
time, all the weight shifts to the bottom

Hammers: Male, because in
the last 5000 years, they’ve hardly changed at all, and are
occasionally handy to have around.

THE REMOTE CONTROL: Female. Ha! You
probably thought it would be male, but consider this: It easily gives a
man pleasure, he’d be lost without it, and while he doesn’t always know
which buttons to push, he just keeps trying

The Art of Being Well

If you dont want to be ill speak your feelings, but humbly

Emotion and feelings that are hidden, repressed end in illnesses
as gastritis, ulcer, lumbar pains, spinal. With time, the repression of
the feelings degenerates to cancer. Then,
we go to a confidante, to share our intimacy, our ‘secrets’ our errors.
The dialogue, the speech , the word, is a powerful remedy and an
excellent therapy.
Make Decisions,
The undecided person remains in doubt, in anxiety, in anguish. Indecision,
accumulates problems, worries, and aggresions. Human history is made of
decisions. To decide is to precisely to know to renounce, to know to
lose advantages and values to win others. The undecided people are victims of gastric ailments, nervous
pains and problems of the skin. Find solutions Negative people do not
find solutions and the enlarge problems. They prefer lamentation,
gossip pessimism. It is better to light a match that to regret the
darkness. A bee is small but produces one of the sweetest things that
exist. We are what we think. The negative thought generates negative
energy that is transformed into illness.

Dont live by appearances,

Who hides reality, pretends, poses and always wants to give the
impression of being well. He wants to be seen as perfect, easy-going,
etc. but is accummulating tons of weight.A bronze statue with feet of
clay. There is nothing worse for the health thatn to liveby appearances
and facades. These are people with a lot of varnish and little root.
Their destiny is the pharmacy, the hospital of pain.

Learn to Accept.

The refusal of acceptance and the absence of self-esteem, make us
alienate ourselves. Being at one with ourselves is the core of a
healthy life. .They who do not acccept this, becomes jealous,
imimitators, ultra competitive, destructive. Be accepted, accepat that
you are accepted, accept criticism. It is wisdom, good sense and
therapy.

Trust,
Who  does not trust, does not communicate is not opened
, is not
related does not create deep and stable relations, does not know how to
have true friendships. Without confidence, there is no relationship.
Distrust is a lack of faith in you and in faith itself.

Do not live life sad.

Good humour, Laughter, REst and happiness, These replenish health and bring long life.
the happy person has the gift to improve the environment wherever they
go."Good humor saves us from the hands of the doctor" Happiness is
health therapy.  Cheers

Coconut the water is good, so it it is good to go coconuts ..sometimes

My body has somehow or

 Coconut Water Information
Compilied by John Kohler

The English name coconut, first mentioned in English print in 1555, comes from Spanish and Portugese word coco, which
means ‘monkey face.’ Spanish and Portugese explorers found a
resemblance to a monkey’s face in the three round indented markings or
‘eyes’ found at the base of the coconut. On the Nicobar Islands of the
Indian Ocean , whole coconuts were used as currency for the purchace of
goods until the early part of the twentieth century.

Coconuts
are the fruit of the coconut palm, botanically known as cocos nucifera,
with nucifera meaning ‘nut-bearing.’ The fruit-bearing palms are native
to Malaysia , Polynesia and southern Asia, and are now also prolific in
South America , India , the Pacific Islands , Hawaii and Florida . The
light, fibrous husk allowed it to easily drift on the oceans to other
areas to propagate. In Sanskrit, the coconut palm is known as kalpa vriksha,
meaning ‘tree which gives all that is necessary for living,’ since
nearly all parts of the tree can be used in some manner or another. The
coconut itself has many food uses, including milk, meat, sugar and oil
as well as functioning as its own dish and cup. The husk was also
burned for fuel by natives, but today a s! eed fibre called coir
is taken from the husk and used to make brushes, mats, fishnets, and
rope. A very potent fermented toddy or drink is also made from the
coconut palm’s sap. Coconut oil,
a saturated fat made fro! m dried coconut meat, is used for commercial
frying and in candies and margarines, as well as in non-edible products
such as soaps and cosmetics.

Although it takes up to a year
for coconuts to mature, the trees bloom up to thirteen times a year, so
fruit is constantly forming yielding a continuous harvest year-round.
An average harvest from one tree runs about 60 coconuts, with some
trees yielding three times that amount. The coconut’s name is a bit of
a misnomer, since it is botanically classified as a drupe and not a
nut.. It is the largest seed known.

If
you’ve ever opened a fresh coconut, you will have seen the thin, opaque
almost clear coconut juice or water which has a slight almond flavor.
Contrary to popular belief, this is not
the coconut milk. However, the water is consumed as a drink fresh from
the coconut by many, and it can also be used in recipes.

Here is some information about Coconut Water
http://www.rawguru.com/store/raw-food/organic_wild_young_coconuts.html

It’s
a natural isotonic beverage, with the same level of electrolytic
balance as we have in ! our blood. It’s the fluid of life, so to
speak.’ In fact, during the Pacific War of 1941-45, both sides in the
conflict regularly used coconut water – siphoned directly from the nut
– to give emergency plasma transfusions to wounded soldiers.

Most
coconut water is still consumed fresh in tropical coastal areas – once
exposed to air, the liquid rapidly loses most of its organoleptic and
nutritional characteristics, and begins to ferment.
Coconut Water is More Nutritious than whole milk – Less fat and NO cholesterol!

  • Coconut Water is More Healthy than Orange Juice – Much lower calories
  • Coconut Water is Better than processed baby milk- It contains lauric acid, which is present in human mother’s milk
  • Coconut water is naturally sterile — Water permeates though the filtering husk!
  • Coconut water is a universal donor– Its identical to human blood plasma
  • Coconut Water is a Natural Isotonic Beverage – The same level we have in our blood.
  • Coconut water has saved lives in 3rd world countries thru Coconut IV
    Coconut
water is the very stuff of Nature, biologically Pure, full of Natural
Sugars, Salts, and Vitamins to ward off fatigue…. and is the next
wave of energy drinks BUT natural!’, according to Mortin Satin, Chielf
of the United Nation’s Food & Agriculture Organization.

Coconut water contains more potassium (at about 294 mg) than most sports drinks (117 mg) and most energy drinks.

Coconut water has less sodium (25mg) where sports drinks have around 41mg and energy drinks have about 200 mg!

    Coconut water has 5mg of
Natural Sugars where sports and energy drinks range from 10-25mg of Altered Sugars.

Coconut water is very high in Chloride at 118mg, compared to sports drinks at about 39mg.

Enjoy the whole egg for goodness sake !

Egg yolks are good for you

The truth about egg yolks

Many people throw away the egg yolk because they think that’s where all the nasty fat and cholesterol is". This is a perfect example of how confused most people are about nutrition.

In a world full of misinformation, somehow most people now mistakenly think that the egg yolk is the worst part of the egg, when in fact, the YOLK IS THE HEALTHIEST PART OF THE EGG!

By throwing out the yolk and only eating egg whites, you’re essentially throwing out the most nutrient dense, antioxidant-rich, vitamin and mineral loaded portion of the egg. The yolks contain so many B-vitamins, trace minerals, vitamin A, folate, choline, lutein, and other powerful nutrients… it’s not even worth trying to list them all.

In fact, the egg whites are almost devoid of nutrition compared to the yolk. Even the protein in egg whites isn’t as powerful without the yolks to balance out the amino acid profile and make the protein more bio-available. Not to even mention that the egg yolks from free range chickens are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids. Yolks contain more than 90% of the calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, thiamin, B6, folate, and B12, and panthothenic acid of the egg. In addition, the yolks contain all of the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K in the egg, as well as all of the essential fatty acids.

And now the common objection I get all the time when I say that the yolks are the most nutritious part of the egg…"But I heard that whole eggs will skyrocket my cholesterol through the roof ." No, this is FALSE!

First of all, when you eat a food that contains a high amount of dietary cholesterol such as eggs, your body down-regulates it’s internal production of cholesterol to balance things out. On the other hand, if you don’t eat enough cholesterol, your body simply produces more since cholesterol has tons of important functions in the body.

And here’s where it gets even more interesting…There are indications that eating whole eggs actually raises your good HDL cholesterol to a higher degree than LDL cholesterol, thereby improving your overall cholesterol ratio and blood
chemistry.

And 3rd… high cholesterol is NOT a disease! Heart disease is a disease…but high cholesterol is NOT.

You can read the following article about why trying to attack cholesterol is a mistake, and what the REAL deadly risk factors actually are…

<http://www.truthaboutabs.com/cholesterol-myths.html>

So I hope we’ve established that whole eggs are not some evil food that will wreck your body… instead whole eggs are FAR superior to egg whites.

Also, your normal supermarket eggs coming from mass factory farming just don’t compare nutritionally with organic free range eggs from healthy chickens that are allowed to roam freely and eat a more natural diet.

I recently compared eggs I bought at the grocery store with a batch of eggs I got at a farm stand where the chickens were free roaming and healthy. Most people don’t realize that there’s a major difference because they’ve never bought real eggs from healthy chickens… The eggs from the grocery store had pale yellow yolks. On the other hand, the healthier free range eggs had deep orange colored yolks indicating much higher nutrition levels and carotenoids.

So next time a health or fitness professional tells you that egg whites are superior, you can quietly ignore their advice knowing that you understand the REAL deal about egg yolks.

One more thing about eggs… I read a study recently that compared groups of people that ate egg breakfasts vs groups of people that ate cereal or bagel based breakfasts. The results of the study showed that the egg eaters lost or maintained a healthier bodyweight, while the cereal/bagel eaters gained weight.

It was hypothesized that the egg eaters actually ate less calories during the remainder of the day because their appetite was more satisfied compared to the cereal/bagel eaters who would have been more prone to wild blood sugar swings and food cravings.

The fun of football, anyone?

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone is still playing football anywhere, of course with players our age.  The fun is not only during the game but also after the game when we sit down to debrief and talk about the good shots, good save, etc.   I am sure many of you can recall the heroes of footbal during our time, like Mohtar Dahari, SohChin Aun , Santoh Singh,  Spiderman (goalkeeper), Mohd Nor, etc.  Someone just told me I looked the Kuah Kim Song, that is why the recolletion.  But just for old time talk, did played quite a bit of football  in the 70s and it is a good way to keep fit and have fun too.

Also was on the way home in the evening and I noticed quite a number of football matches going on everywhere.  So was thinking is that is why there is so few man in SHC could more of them still be playing football.  Any of your husbands still playing football, can we meet or join them ?

Jamming, making music of early 70s, for fun.

Last year,  me , Daniel and someone started jamming , me on guitar, Dan on drums and that someone on organ.   However,  Daniel found someone and together they played  better music in a lovely and captivating way that drove him to live overseas almost immediately.

To make the story short, I happened to have met another friend who was the drummer when we jammed in the early 70’s playing song by Eagles, early rock, etc. He is still keen on jamming for fun and so am looking for anyone who plays any instrument  to jam for fun with us, once in a while.  Cheers

Air Scouts and flying ?

Hi all,

I happened to have met 2 gentlemen that sort of rekindled something I  have always wanted to try.   That is the cheapest way to fly, on ultralight plane that is basically the lghtest plane with a motor to fly.

I learned that you can attend a 5 days course  and learn from absolutely zero knowledge/experience and on day 5 you will be able to take off and fly solo. Such packages are available in JB or in Pattaya and it includes not only the training , lodging but also insurance.

Also I have heard of Boy scouts, Sea scouts but not Air scouts ?  What air scouts do is the same as most scouts except they learn about flying and may also do some flying on small planes.  Well if anyone has such interest or are involved or planning on such trips , I would like to learn more. Cheers.

Loving Country Line Dance and Country music

Hi all those who are really keen or also enjoy it,

The Country line Dance Association of Spore have their weekly Friday jams at Far East square on Fridays and at the Paya Lebar Post centre on Sunday from around 7pm to 10pm.

If you join them as members for $35, you only pay $1 everytime you join their jams, else it will be $3 each jam for non-members.

For those who are really keen and staying around Braddle, there is a lady who sort of run through the Friday’s list of dances on Wed at about 8pm at her condo air con common room.  If you are keen to really join as a CLDA member and learn and join  the Wed class (which is free, except for  $5 monthly charge for the hall), you have to also at least attend one of the weekly jams.  Only restricrted number of  slots available and this is more for those who are already past their basic line dance, can email me for more info.

I am keen to enjoy line dancing again and listening to good old country songs and this group really plays the really nice old country songs with equally nice dance steps.  So am inviting those who share the same interest to join me.

I am also calling all those who wants to have a country line dance jam to meet on Sept 12 Eve at the NSRC bungalow, and we will play all the songs that the past SHC line dancers from  the  D n Ds have learnt.   All the songs right from ‘Saturday night fever’ , Baby hit me one more time, Pizzirico,  Cowboy Cha cha, Thai song –  to Sway Me now and Soli, and others that we have learnt.  So to all those dancers staying at the East and West try to form you own class to revise (you have 3 months)  and let us have this jam .

Also welcome if anyone wants to sing Karaoke on any of these songs but you have to bring your own Karoake version of the Cd.  You are also free to request to dance any song, but please provide the dance sheet and song so that I can cc to all those who are keen.

Cheers , let us have real good country dance night, maybe dress in country style and have a simple barbecue by East coast too.  Dan Huang if you want to dance and sing ‘Your Cheating heart you are welcome’ but please also organise your Sat Dance on the 13 Sept. Cheers , and howdy to all those cow girls and boys, or ladies and men.

Petai power ? Where to buy it and a good dish of it?

ADVICE FROM UKM MEDICAL DOCTOR

Little did you know …… after reading THIS, you’ll NEVER look at petai
in the same way again! (info from Pheng Sok)

Petai contains three natural sugars -sucrose, fructose and glucose.
Combined with fiber, petai gives an instant, sustained and substantial
boost of energy.

Research has proved that just two servings of petai
provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder
petai is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes. But energy
isn’t the only way petai can help us keep fit.

It can also help overcome
or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it
a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression:
According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND among people
suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating petai.

This is because petai contains tryptophan, a type of protein that the
body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your
mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS(premenstrual syndrome):
Forget the pills – eat petai.

The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood
glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia:
High in iron, petai can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the
blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

 Blood Pressure:
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt,
making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and
Drug Administration has just allowed the petai industry to make official
claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and
stroke.

Brain Power :
200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through
their exams this year by eating petai at breakfast, break, and lunch
in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the
potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation:
High in fiber, including petai in the diet can help restore normal bowel
action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers:
One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a petai
milkshake, sweetened with honey. The petai calms the stomach and,
with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while
the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn:
Petai has a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from
heartburn, try eating petai for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness :
Snacking on petai between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels
up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites :
Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected
area with the inside of the petai skin. Many people find it amazingly
successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves:
Petai is high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight:
Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work
leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at
5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more
likely to be in high-pressure jobs.

The report concluded that, to avoid
panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar
levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep
levels steady.

Ulcers:
Petai is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of
its soft texture and smoothness.

It is the only raw fruit that can be
eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes
over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control :
Many other cultures see petai as a ‘cooling’ fruit that can lower both the
physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers.

In Holland,
for example, pregnant women eat petai to ensure their baby is born
with a cool temperature..

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) :
Petai can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood
enhancer, tryptophan.

Smoking:
Petai can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they
contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help
the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress:
Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends
oxygen to the brain and regulates your body’s water balance. When we
are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium
levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium petai
snack.

Strokes:
According to research in ‘The New England Journal of Medicine, ‘eating
petai as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by
as much as 40%’.

Warts:
Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a
wart, take a piece of petai and place it on the wart. Carefully hold the
petai in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

So, as you can see, petai really is a natural remedy for many ills.

When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice
the carbohydrates, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin
A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich
in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe its
time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, ‘A Petai a day
keeps the doctor away’.

I
dont really like eating Petai, but there was a Chinese restaurant that
Daniel Kang brought me to in JB  that serves special Herbal
soup,  roasted pork and char siew (Malaysian style, crispier,
crunchy and saltier) and Petai sambal that really got me liking it but
not the way Catherine she can finish the whole plate. The Petai sambal
is cooked in a very refreshing way, with the Petai not overpowering but
complementing the sambal and the taste is spicy, hot with that peculiar
Petai taste dont overhang too long.

Daniel maybe you can post the
address of that restaurant her. I  would like to go there again and for those who
like to try it.  Secondly does anyone know anywhere else in
Singapore is Petai serve refreshingly nice.

Lastly
Petai from what I heard, is not easily found in Singapore, so anyone
wants to comment on that.  In JB famous afternoon Wet Market (near Carefoure
and the Durian Festival) which is as impressive as
the ones you can find in Australia or States. I dont think I have found anywhere in Singapore where
you find a wide, wide variety of fresh meats, vegetables and fruits,
etc and of couse Petai in peeled or pod form quite cheaply.  So
here is to more Petai Power ???

Forex trading – Group strategy versus the individual investor

Hi all bringing this topic up after a year.

" Hi all SHC members, I have read that in USA it is common for retirees
or housewifes to form a group, so that they can get their hands into
Investing in Stocks, Futures, with the experts in the club providing
good and free advice resulting in good returns. As i have just starting
getting into investiing in stocks , futures, CFDs ,etc, i just wonder
if we can form such a group , so that those who may be Experts can
share their expertise and experience  to help new comers like me.  So
far , i have learned quite a lot from people like Dave and Andrew and i
think they could be others out there who may have just as much as
expertise or more and can help us all.  At the same time,  some who
like me, who are just starting out,  will defintely benefit by learning
from these people.  Of course’ everything is on a good will basis, no
guarantees and everyone is responsible for their own investments, but
talk is free, and knowing more is defintely better in any investments.
At the end of day, it is also a good way to get to know more SHC
members and have something current and of strong interests to talk
about. bringing this topic up again after a year. "

So
after a year it seems now they maybe more like minded people who want
to work and share information to benefit from group effort, strategies,
snergy and wisdom.

But the focus now will be on just Forex.
Why, if you see the changes in price or commodities, rice, oil , gold
and US $ and other currencies,  you should be aware you can lose
money even if you do nothing simply due to inflation.

So
all those who feel they can contribute in some way and at the same time
gain from doing so, let us try and meet and do this.

With
group snergy we can use many tools , and expertise from those who have
experience in other areas like Finance,  TA , fundamentals,
or very specialised areas in banking ,  Japanese
candlesticks,  world financial economics , even history.
Cost of getting better charting tools, Autofx programs, financial
reports can be shared , thus making the group more effective as
compared to a single individual.

I am already in a group
for a year and and can say that it can work , what more if members are
retired experienced investors in their own right.  Those who are
keen to discuss this further can email me for further info.  Open
to all SHC members who are willing to share and contribute effort,
expertise and some time  to operate this as an investment
business.  Cheers
