Lessons to learn

The Phey YK story is a tragedy.*  One cannot help but feel sorry for his suffering while he was on the run. Flashback to 35 years ago ….he was such a powerful figure and his greed that led to his corruption.  Now old and frail, he decided to turn himself in and ‘come home’ and has been sentenced to five years in jail. No commiseration from the judge. I think he might die in jail.

There are some lessons to learn when a powerful mortal falls from grace and thoughts about life in general. For the latter, it is old age that counts when it comes to evaluating whether one has a good life.

It seems ironical to say take care of your old age when you are young. The cool advice to the young is “just do it!” I shudder.

autumnif autumn is here can winter be far behind?

Author: Jassmine Teo

I came to know about the SHC from eNN (Seng Kang). My interests are varied. I write on the forum regularly to improve my writing. In my autumn years, my priority is voluntary service. Hope to meet like-minded people and help initiate a programme/project for the disabled like the hearing impaired.

  1. Heehee!

I just can’t believe it! He can disappear in Thailand for 35 years!

Has he another family there? Was he protected and unofficially exiled there?

I would be very keen to know his exploits and can’t wait for his book on the “lost” years…must be a best seller if published!

  2. Ya, I also wondered.
I read about the SNTC’s Trusteeship* , a low cost trust management services for persons with special needs. I wish there is such a trusteeship to look after the needs of elderly with dementia instead of the LPA.

  3. Dr Poh Soo Kai, a political detainee, has just launched a book on his side of the story … Detailing his arrest, charge and detention; he paints a chilling picture of the times and the draconian measures taken to annihilate the opposition and threat of communism.

I am just wondering if there will be any story coming out of the Phey Yew Kok saga…although his story will be less dramatic but no less controversial.

  4. I did manage to read the first few chapters after buying it. But failing eyesight and the sheer weight of the book has made me reluctant to go further. Each time I carry the book to read, I don’t know whether to sit, slouch or stoop to make myself comfortable. In the end, sleep is the best.

Is there a E copy that I can download (never mind the $) ?

  5. Dear Friends,

Am born 19Forty Seven and thus through the years have had noticed that
human beings FELL due to GREED(yours Truly 1998/9 and to a lesser extent 2007/08) in all maner of Wants albeit often it is Money as testified in the past decade with Sporeans age below Fifty wanting to acquire a second apartment
for profit “Quietly” prompted by the Govt, but those latecomers from mid-last years now feeling the squeeze as the property market take a breather.

Best Wishes to all your endeavours.

  6. Dear Friends,

Touching on politics, the chiding in 1987/88 was “Look, these people cpme here yearning for a job so as to enhance the economic betterment of their dependents, and why are you KAYPOHS proposing that they have a Dayoff
weekly. You guys will be charged for Marxism”

Why did a next door neighbour cried on Television?? Because after borrowing from the World Bank to build Tanjong Pelepas to block PSA and build Putera Abdul Rahman airport(KLIA) to block Changi, his ethnic race reefuse to work after Eight pm. Some Sporeans have the opinion that when both husband and wife are working on Three shifts(7am-3pm,3-11pm,11pm-7am) daily, probably nearly a Quater of these couples do not sleep together on one, two, three nights
weekly. Nevermind, for from 20Ten we are the world’s TOP Cosmopolitan city and probably will continue to be for the next SG50

    Regards, Abel Tan
