Must-know info to help you get your zzz’s

Can’t sleep? You have plenty of company. About half of all adults experience insomnia on occasion, and 1 in 10 battle insomnia on a regular basis, according to the Cleveland Clinic. If you fall into one of those groups, chances are you’re already following the tried-and-true rules for a good night’s sleep: Don’t have too much caffeine (especially late in the day), don’t exercise late at night, keep your bedroom at a cool, comfortable temperature, and make sure your bed, pillows and linens are comfy. Those are all good tips, but there are lesser-known things you can try to help you get more rest.

1. Set a Bedtime Alert
Most of us already use an alarm to wake up in the morning, but sleep expert Mxxx Bxxx, PhD, suggests setting it at night as well. "I tell people to set their alarm for one hour before bedtime, which reminds them to begin what I call the power-down hour," says Dr. Bxxx.  He says you should spend the first 20 minutes of that hour taking care of any necessary chores (like walking the dog or making your kids’ lunches), then spend the next 20 minutes on hygiene (washing up, brushing your teeth, etc.), and save the last 20 minutes before bed for relaxation. You don’t necessarily have to meditate, if that doesn’t appeal to you; you can also do deep breathing exercises, read a book or even watch a little TV (as long as it’s not too stimulating).

2. Don’t Clear Your Mind
Experts say anxiety and depression top the list of reasons people have trouble sleeping. Part of the problem is that many of us just can’t seem to quiet that internal voice that starts rambling on about the worries of the day. Of course, if you can clear your mind, go ahead and do it. But if that’s impossible, don’t force it–you’ll only end up panicking about the fact that you’re not sleeping, says Pxxx Mxxx, PhD.  Instead, try slowing down your thoughts. "Practice saying anything and everything that comes into your mind to yourself in a slow, monotonous, drowsy tone," says Dr. Mxxx. It doesn’t matter if you’re thinking about what to buy tomorrow at the grocery store or how a big presentation at work is going to go. If you slow everything down and talk to yourself in an even tone, you’ll find it’s that much harder to keep worrying (or stay awake).

3. Count Numbers–Not Sheep
Another great way to quiet those racing thoughts is to count backward from 300 by 3s, says Dr. Bxxx. Unless you’re a math ace, you probably won’t be able to focus on anything else while you’re doing this, which means you’ll end up distracting yourself from your stressful thoughts.

4. Get Up a Half-Hour Earlier
Yes, you read that right! If you’re suffering from chronic insomnia, try getting up, for example, at 6:30 instead of your usual 7 wakeup time–no matter what time you fell asleep the night before. You may be extra-sleepy for a little while, but this is hands-down the most effective way to reset your body clock, says Dr. Mxxx. It works because it teaches your body that it can’t catch up on sleep in the morning, so eventually you’ll start feeling drowsier earlier in the evening.

5. Consider Seeing a Professional
A sleep psychologist is someone who specializes in gathering info about your emotions and your behaviors specifically as they relate to sleep. Often found at sleep centers, a sleep psychologist can usually help resolve your sleep issues in just four to six sessions, says Jxxx Oxxx, MD, a spokesman for the National Sleep Foundation.

6. Don’t Worry If You Can’t Sleep Right Away
You shouldn’t pass out the second your head hits the pillow. If that happens all the time, it’s a sign that you’re sleep deprived. (Ditto for nodding off during boring meetings and long movies.) Ideally, it should take 15 to 25 minutes from when you lie down to when you drift off to sleep, says Dr. Bxxx.

7. Go to Bed When You’re Tired
If you’re having ongoing sleep troubles, don’t worry so much about the fact that it’s almost midnight and you have to get up in less than seven hours. Forcing yourself to stay in bed when you’re not sleepy is just going to contribute to more tossing and turning, says Dr. Oxxx.  Instead, get up, do something relaxing, and go back to bed whenever you do feel tired. You might end up exhausted the next day (but that was bound to happen either way under these circumstances), and the following night you should have better luck getting to bed earlier.

    My own tips for falling asleep fast as follows:-

    1. Have a warm drink 15 min before bedtime.

    2. Bedroom must be cool & comfortable. Turn on aircon in advance if weather is too hot.

    3. Breathe in & out deeply into your stomach area. It helps take your mind off thinking about work & other things.
    Applying some ointment on your stomach also helps.

  3. Usually, sleep experts are those who cant sleep and since they are awake, they might as well spend the time thinking and come with ideas which will keep others awake as well. Thus, for eg how to sleep if one keeps counting backwwards and working out what, from 300, the next number reducing by 3 is?

    Usually, people who dont sleeep well have this one common fear that they wont wake up again. So better to keep their eyes wide opened, keep drinking warm drinks, count numbers, play the aircond switch, on it, off it, breathe in and out, and very soon the cock crows, the sun rtises and they survive to live another day.

    As for places of interest here in HK, the ‘to do’ places right now would be Ngong Ping 360 – cable car ride (have not been there) and HK Disneyland (also have not been) as I know it’s very small, only Phase 1 and recently they announced they are going to build Phase 2 though who knows when they will actually start. Terence, yes, it’s in HK, not Shenzhen. Don’t take your son to the wrong place. Kekekeee.

    Although I have lived here for donkey years, there are so many places I have not been to or even heard of…….I know…..obviously more familiar with dining and drinking places. My strengths. Hahahaa.

    Just wondering about the last point ‘applying ointment on the stomach’. I take it it’s T balm or equivalent? Isn’t this for tummy pain? (used to apply to my youngest daughter as she is proned to tummy aches plus gas).

    For you, you can reduce by 2 instead of 3, less stressful and easier…….

    Go to sleep early tonight and leave the aircon switch alone – play with something else instead. Kakakakaa.

  7. Sleeping should occur naturally for most of us most of the time. But some of us may need help from time to time.

    Yes, can use T-balm or Medicated oil or even Essential oils. Basically try to distract the active mind by focusing Breathing or Warm/soothing sensations to the stomach area.

    Tim@5 & others who can fall asleep easily all the time…Rather than counting sheep or numbers, you should really count your blessings ;-)

    The next time you are having sleepless nights, you can do a self analysis to reveal the root of your problem, before rushing out to see a sleep psychologist. Here is how :

    1) take a piece of paper and write down the word “sleep night”
    2) assign the numbers 0 ~ 9 to each letter in sequential order:
    0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
    S L E E P N I G H T
    3) choose any 3 numbers : in incremental order with at least one number taken from the 0~4 gp and 5~9 gp
    4) invert the set of chosen 3 numbers, eg 359 into 953
    5) subtract the 2 set of nos : smaller fm larger, eg 953-359
    6) invert the resulting nos once again and add up the 2 sets, eg 594+495
    7) multiply the result by 40
    8) finally, substitute the resulting numbers by the letters to form a word

    and there you are, the root to those sleepless nights…ooops.

    Ahh…..for the warm/soothing sensations. I use lavender essential oils and massage the shoulders, back of neck, back of ears and head (for good measure) to relax just before bedtime.

    Yes. For those who can fall asleep easily are truly blessed and should really count their blessings. Unlike insomniacs like me having to count sheep/numbers – backward, subtracting 3/4/5…….

  10. Tks, Jonathan, yes I do usually sleep well, within minutes of placing myself diagonally on the bed. That keeps any intruder from lying next to me and disturbing me. And the fact that I actually long not to wake up from my sleep removes the fear of getting into a deep sleep.

    Hou Chong, by the time anyone who religiously follows thru yr method, completes the calculation, it’s time for him to brush his teeth, wash his face, pung sai and starts a new day. But of cos he’ll get his sleep in the office.

    I am most fortunate in this sense cos 5 minutes is all I take to fall asleep, whether day or night. Even with a cup of coffee at night, I have no problem falling asleep. I used to be able to sleep right through when I get on the plane – put a ‘do not disturb’ sticker on my seat! And I would wake up when the plane lands. The trick to falling asleep fast is to switch off completely and not think of anything!

    …..Ahh…..for the warm/soothing sensations. I use lavender essential oils and massage the shoulders, back of neck, back of ears and head (for good measure) to relax just before bedtime.

    Just to share,
    I too uses essential oils such Lavender oil and lemon grass oil but I was told by the Filipino sales girl from Mt. Sapona,a spa shop that it is not advisable to apply direct on to your skin/body.

    Instead, I use an electrical dispenser by putting a few drops of essential oil fill with some water and a little pump will bubble the water and oil in the container. The oil will gradually vaporise from the dispenser. Or you may use an electrical heater not the burner type which uses lighted tealight candle to heat the oil . Besides heat,it gives out CO carbon monoxide , a poisonous gas as well which we inhale without knowing while asleep.

    Besides,inhaling the Lavender essential oil vapour to relax the mind ,I will also play very soft soothing aromatherapy music every night( Green Music )by Chamras Saewataporn to help me to further relax and sleep as I am suffering from noise induced hearing deafness – 24h/7 continous “ringing sound” ngngngngng….ng sound in my right ear and it can be v.frustrating esp. at night when the room is v.silent.

    I had learn to overcome it by ignoring the “ringing” sound and the worse thing there is no cure or operatn to remove this “noise” in the ears. My ENT specialist asks me to avoid discos or noisy places if possible otherwise the “ringing” sound can become louder.However, I had learn to live with it for many yrs.

    2) Do not surf the internet 1hr. before sleep otherwise, your brain is still in a v.active and restless mood and this will result in poor quality sleep. U wait up tired and exhausted in the morning as though you had not sleep the night b4.

    3) Do not drink coffee/tea after 4pm as both of them contain stimulants that keep you wide awake and staring at the ceiling. However,it has no effect with people like Lina Ng or others.

    Hi Lina Ng, Aren’t you lucky to be able to fall asleep so quickly?

    4) Our body has a “biological clock”, try to sleep at regular time say 11pm every night. And when the time arrives, you tend to feel sleepy and doze off. I am easily awaken at the 1st.sign of light from my window and it happens naturally around the same time like an “alarm clock” in our body. If you do not upset yr biological rhythm by sleeping regularly,you will sleep at a fixed time and wake up also at a fixed time. However,if yr sleeping patterns is irregular, then your sleep and waking up time is haphazard too.

    5) Try to swim at least 10 laps everyday, more laps being a bonus or 1/2 hr evening daily walk.

    I too had to sleep diagonally like you otherwise my two feet will be sticking out of the bed like sore thumbs. Lengthwise the water bed is only 6ft. still not long enough for me but to sleep diagonally solves the problem.

    Yes, becos you swim 30 laps 3 times/week and gym once/week and being “dead tired” ,your mind is too exhausted to think of anything.

    Or have you lately master the art of “Meditation” by …not think of anything! which I too find difficult to achieve as my mind is ” racing like 7 horses all running in different directions.”

    If only I can master the art of meditn by forcing all the 7 horses to run in 1 definite directn ,I will achieve peace of mind and is still trying v. hard to achieve. :(

    7 horses running in one direction – shouldn’t be too difficult – watch the derby on TV and then go to bed…am I missing something? Have you seen those racing horses in the Casino, some of them gallop but do not move and they are a real nightmare…haha.

    Good to hear from you! The lavender oil I use is safe to use directly on the skin (so far, so good. Skin is still intact). In fact it’s in a roll on glass container about the size of a lipstick. Very compact and good for a quick pick-me-up especially on the go.

    Sorry to hear about the ringing sound in your ear. Can imagine how frustrating it is for you. Yes, the dead silence at night can amplify the ringing noise. May be you can start a thread on ear problems.

    Thank you -yes the scent of lavender oil is known to bring about a calming and relaxing state of mind. It is therefore not recommended for using in the motor car as a perfume. Actually, I have a bad cough at the moment and that has prevented me from falling asleep – anyway, I have just applied a concortion of 5 essential oil (see “4 thieves oil” in google search) to the sole of my feet. If it works, I should be in dreamland soon.

    Haha. I’m glad you appreciate it.

    The China trip was my first one and it dispelled my misconception about how I thought China was. I was only in Xiamen, Shantou, Chaozhou and the neighbouring Hakka province. They were much more developed than I had thought,especially Xiamen, although some places were still pretty ‘rural’. I was told that there were many very much more ‘rural’ places which we weren’t brought to and I was glad they didn’t.

    I enjoyed the trip although the way things were organised left a bad taste in my mouth. There were ‘special’ people who got ‘special’ treatment although we all paid the same price. I guess the less said the better or I might be stuck with various labels. Anyway, I will never go on this sort of package trip again. I will be more discerning in future.

    Coming back to this post about SLEEP, I used to wake up round about 3 am every night and be unable to return to sleep. I’d resort to either watching tv or surfing the net. I used to go to bed round about 10pm, sometimes even 9ish. My solution was to stay up later and go to bed only when I was really very sleepy.
    Now, bedtime is usually past 11pm or even as late as 2am and I sleep like a baby till 7 am or so, no break in between.

    My suggestion to those who can’t fall asleep, why worry? Don’t go to bed. Do something else, like watching tv or surfing the net or reading or even activities like household chores, karaoke, dancing or… , haha, have some ‘fun’ with your partner? Tire yourself out. You will fall asleep when you are exhausted.

    Also, stay away from coffee or tea or any caffeinated drinks from midday onwards. Despite denials, they DO keep you up.

    Why waste time sleeping? We will have ‘time’to sleep when we do the looooong sleep at the end of our lives.

    So, cheer up, stay up and stop worrying about not sleeping!

  27. Hou Chong, worry not. At our age, we can only get older and if we still dont joke now, cant be creative and imaginative with our jokes, then we have lived in vain. Nothing is lewd unless the mind sees it as such, and if that’s the case, then it’s that somebody who has a dirty mind, not you.

    Steven, yr height has exceeded 6 feet by more than 3 inchses 9if I remembeer correctly) and few beds are designed/built for this long a man. Neither is the ultimatee long box. So, got the drift now?

    Yes, since you will need it evetually and knowing how much you disllke bothering people, isnt it time now to place an order and you can even design it yourself with the carpenter. Include a kennel where Cowboy can also rest in peace and make some space for your money plant. Best, after it’s built, you can use it immediately and so wont have to worry anymore abt beds, and make improvements when you still can.

    I thot the best lavender oil in spore has to be found in Lavender Street so I walked its full length to check.

    The levender oil is sold in the many Chinese restaurants there and the smell is thick and repulsive. So I wonder how folks here can describe the smell as calming, relaxing and, most motakteng, safe to use directly on the skin? The lard oil does, howeveer, add that bit more aroma to the fried food.

  29. Haha, I have no problem sleeping but of cos I understand why you put me next to Mary-C in #32. Wonder when i wake up what solution will she put in my hand…….or perhaps, she has forced all my solutions out of me?

    Earlier, Babe asked where I place my bolster. I normally leave it standing on my tummy which then taunts my brother into standing up as well. They will then play and fight with each other, disturbing my sleep sometimes but invariably when I wake up in the morning, they will both be down. However, sometimess, brother gets to play it for real and poor bolster, unwanted, all in tears.

  31. Jonathan, my aunt once told me that the ability to sleep runs in the family – guess we have no sleeping problems! And the fact that we sleep right through as well! Now, 7hrs. is good enough! The ability to have continous sleep on the plane lessens with age. But strong Chinese tea after a wedding dinner keeps me awake.

    Steven, you will definitely sleep well with exercise. Good to get Patrick Lee to teach meditation for sound sleep.

    I’ve googled the four thieves oil and learnt that it’s good for bronchitis, cold and flu, pneumonia – the works. Good to know this as the girls have respiratory problems from time to time (very bad when they were little). Thank you for sharing.

    I have trieed in the last hour to roll my tongue forward, backward, to the sides, asked Mr Rajoo to help me but still cant make “Tah Fei Kea” sound Cantonese, let alone it being, as you claimed, Cantonese.

    The phonics for “kea” is either “kia” or “kee” (as in pea) so it’s more like hokien or si-hup so why dont you say “puck buay kee”?

    Anyhow, the Cantoinese for beating the aeroplane is tar (I can accept yr “tah” tho) fei kei. Now, show us how it’s done.

    At that time I was still ignorant of that phrase but my classmates were laughing aloud over it.

  38. wah wah ,,,hope i am not 2 late 2 jump into de band wagon ,,, pls refer 2 the strait times dated 22/08/09 last week saturday, have any one ever tried out ,1 teaspoon of sesame oil ,garle on yr mouth on an empty stomach.
    swish & swirl till the oil gently thru the gums & teeth 4 abt 10 min.as u continue the oil become thinner & whiter,den split out & rinse yr mouth thoroughly.

    make sure u dun swallow it as it maybe poisonous, doing tis a day gurantee 1 a gd koon…betta result do it 2 or 3 times a day,,,in india they say it cure headache,backpain , knee pain,teeth get whiter & cleaner,,, have any 1 care 2 comment pls ,b4 i 1 2 try la…..

    No need sesame and garlic. Just one pack of Whiskey or Brandy. ‘Swish and swirl’ in your mouth and between your teeth, than swallow and enjoy.
    The alcohol kills all germs in teeth, gums and whole mouth. Than you get drunk, all pain go away and you can sleep like a baby.

    As we may had trouble sleeping in the night may I suggest you to buy the Green Music CD entitled “Nirvana” by the famous Thai musician Chamras Saewataporn.

    Very soothing music to “cool” down the brainwaves and promotes sleep.

    I played it every night before sleeping in air cond comfort and stroking gently “my” pet on the floor. Sometimes,I combine with aroma therapy vapour from heated Lavender,Eucalyptus or Lemon grass oil.

    Besides, you may buy them from Holland Village at Lim’s Art Gallery or at Lim’s Art Gallery at Vivo City.

    The other titles are Music of the Chaophraya River , Wind,
    etc… a series of 10 green music.

    ….From Hamidah, I saw from the roadside their condo is on hill top. Just curious, do you happen to stay at this same place since you said your hse is just 15 min walk from the htl.

    Whoa! If your place is there , then it would be
    ( foong lang swei larn ) I remember admiring those hill side beautiful bungalows while taking a cable ride around Ocean Park and the view is a ” Millionaire’s View! ” with a bonus view of both harbour and city skyline. I can just imagine how it would look like at night. Moe Tak Theng.
    No wonder the Shaw brothers and Lee Kai Shin , nina Choo and other famous actors/actreses chose this area to live in the most prestigious parts of Hong Kong while most of us are
    “complacent” with our HDB pigeon holes. Ha! ha! :)

    I would say I have a ‘half millionaire’s view’. I can see across Tsim Sha Tsui – Kowloon and beyond overlooking the famous Hong Kong Harbour which I see ships, barges and sometimes sailboats (whenever they have competitions).

    At the same time, I can see other residential buildings and their laundry plus this very tall office building which I want to saw into half as it really blocks part of my view.

    All in all, it is a pleasant place to live in. I am blessed.
