Typhoon 8

The wind is really, really howling outside my windows and now as at 4:02, (AM that is) its screaming outside wanting to get in……………….keep my fingers crossed that my glass windows will hold up.

As this is my 1st typhoon since moving to this place last Nov, really want this place to stay in one piece.  My old place though very old held up well considering.

Been hearing lots of things flying and breaking; hope no one is hurt or their property.  Still watching the news now and more things etc have blown off , scattering all over……………

Apparently, this weather will continue on Tuesday and will be better towards the end of the week.

  1. Good morning Geraldine

I will pray for you that nothing untoward happens to you, your family or your window pane :)

My colleagues who are in HK for training told me yesterday that they had to return to their hotel within 2 hours because of the alert. I reminded them to da bao food in case they get holed up for too long.

Take care and keep us updated.

    Caroline Gee

Whoa, looks like they cannot go to the office today.

  2. Hi Geraldine

Though I dunno know u well enough, I wish you will keep safe.

I just heard from my colleague in HK that the typhoon has been downgraded to 3 and that is good news.

The reason for the typhoon is because he had a lot of onion soup last night so that is why there is such strong winds this morning !! haha

Take care and have a great week !!

  3. Hi Geraldine

Hope the situation is better now…i din hear any pots & pans flying oredi le!…haha

Typhoon..we never experience it here..only saw in movies..wonder how ‘scary’ it can be..but we pray for your safety & wellbeing..

  4. Hi Caroline,

So kind of you to pray for us (including the window pane. Kakakakaa). My place is still in one piece and all the windows fought bravely against the screaming wind. Have praised them for their hard work and strong spirit. Way to go!

It’s now Typhoon 1 since 1.32pm. Just rained and looks like it will continue to do so for the rest of the day. Though it’s T1, the wind is still strong at times.

Forecast says we will have more rain and by Friday, it will be sunny.YEEESSS! Can do my laundry then. Kekekeeeee.

  5. Hello Maggie,

How are you? Nice of you to write……so sweet.

Now we know who’s the culprit who caused last night’s extremely bad weather. Please tell him to consume in moderation. Hahahhaaa.

You take care, too and enjoy your day!!

  6. Hi Sweet Nor,

    Thank you for your concern.

This typhoon was bad though have not read any reports about pots and pans flying. Keekeee.

Sometimes it may be typhoon 8 but completely quiet and peaceful – just humid and suffocating. Once or maybe twice in the past we had typhoon 8 but nothing happened. This caused a lot of aggravation as people parked themselves at home, shops and malls were closed etc etc and the Observatory got swore at.

At times typhoon 3 are worse. There were a few times whereby people went about their lives thinking it could not be that bad since it was only T3 but the weather was so bad with strong gusty wind, very heavy rain and flooding and again, the Observatory bore the brunt of the swearing.

It may not seem like a big deal in the classification of the typhoon but here in HK, the Observatory has to make the announcement by a certain time so as to avoid chaos. All kindergartens (maybe elementary schools too) and special needs schools are closed when it’s T3 meaning that students who are in school at that time have to leave and go home which means their parents have to rush there to get their child – even if they are working.

When it’s T8 all high schools are closed and students have to make their way home. Same for workplace when it’s T8. Some malls, eateries stay open till T10, yes, we do have typhoon 10 though rarely.

  7. Hi Geraldine,

I was in HK two weeks ago and the weather was real hot & humid.
Tape your window up to prevent it from shattering. You take care & keep yourself warm.

    Warmest regards,

  8. Hey Melissa,

Yes, it’s been real hot and humid compared to Sg. Now with the rain after the typhoon, it’s wet and windy. When the weather clears, it will be back to hot and humid; can’t wait for autumn………

Thanks for your advice; wanted to tape the windows but didn’t and the windows came through. Real trouper!!

You take care too….hope to catch up with you when I am in town.

  9. Hi Geraldine

Can I ask you about the typhoon? It was that strong at no.8.
Did the typhoon blew away your underpants?
What happens when you are outside and this happens?
Blame the typhoon too strong or your underpants too loose?
    Please answer candidly. Hahahaaaa!

    Don Juan

  10. Hey Patrick,

Is this all you care about – whether my underpants were blown away?? Sigh……….

In the spirit of sportsmanship (what am I talking about?), the answer is NO, all my underpants are fine, those in the closet plus the ones I was wearing during the typhoon.

Ah, if I was outside during that time, they would still be where they were as my lingerie (I prefer to call them that; underpants sound like something an elephant would wear)are meant to be devoured and torn off (oohhh…when need be).

Now I am hot and excited. Are you? Kakakakakekekekkeeeee.

  11. HELLO Peter-G,

    Archive away……..glad that you like this Q n A.

By the way, tried to look up your profile but found nada. Care to introduce yourself to me?

  12. Good morning Dear G-string #11. Being discreet I termed it underpants. Ya! it sounds so crude. I would have said panties.

Goossh! why is an elephant wearing panties. I can’t imagine my dear! I am laughing too. Hope it makes your day. Cool yourself with a glass of wine as we had it in Lan Kwai Fong
when I was in HK but this time on your own though.

Love you dear as a sister mai.

  13. Hi Geraldine

Oh dear! I plan to be in HK in early October and would dread being in a typhoon! Then again, it would be a first-time experience for me.

I think that HK has had many typhoons before and that you’re all quite used to them… I mean that you take in stride.

This is not normal for Singaporeans who would baulk at the slightest sign of trouble: Slight tremors from a nearby earthquake in Indonesia would send us calling the police, weather stations, and rushing down into the streets. And, the next day, newspaper and TV reports would cover the “event” with personal interviews of the “victims”!

I just wonder… How long does a typhoon go on for? Maybe I should pack some extra underpants…

  14. Hi Kenneth,

The typhoon season would be over by early October but with global warming and the weather all over the world these days getting worse, it may occur though really unlikely.

As to how long does a typhoon go on for? Well, usually it lasts for a day/night just like this past T8. Sometimes it may last for a couple of days.

Do pack some extra undies in case yours get blown off – trust Patrick-L to think of such questions of all things……..*shakes head*

    Take care,

  15. Hi Geraldine,
Glad to note that T8 had blown over. My colleague was stranded too and had to apply for an urgent leave as they could not get a flight back until the next day.

Do take care and god bless. Rgds, Lisa Ong

  16. Dear All,

As at 10nish pm tonight, we have Typhoon 1. Yes. Wind is gusty from time to time. The Observatory says it’s unlikely they’ll put up T3 tomorrow. Let’s see.

The weather for the next few days will be terrible; lots and lots of rain with strong wind. The typhoon is on the way to Hainan Island and will most probably hit Hainan by Tuesday.

So any members travelling to these parts of China, beware and be prepared.

Kenneth #15, as you mentioned you’ll be in town in early October, you may be caught in this weather.

  17. Hi Geraldine Ting,

Can explain why Typhoon 8 and not just Typhoon.
    Any particular significance ?

…….Lots and lots of rain with strong wind.
Beware, pls. don’t carry a large umbrella .You will be blown far away to Hainan Island.

In one of the TVB HK Cantonese drama serials, the ”
Ultimate Crime Fighter” , I feel the script writer should be given a kick on his/her butts for saying that there was a typhoon in Singapore which had incurred a lot of damages to the island. I believe that he/she shd do some HW 1st. before writing.

Typhoon in Singapore ? We Sporeans have yet to see one and that will definitely be BIG news. And to make things worse , none of the producers /actors/actresses/managers etc….pointed out his/her mistake.

A fictional movie should also be convincing as well. Agreed? Gai yim gai choe….

  18. Hi Steven,

As the past T8 was really bad that night so I just simply wrote T8 to emphasize the severity of the weather.

Yes, don’t carry a large umbrella (any umbrellas for that matter in a severe storm/typhoon). Will most probably be blown all the way to Hainan Island. Kakkakakaaa.

Typhoon in Sg??!! WHAT?! What morons to write a ridiculous script as if the audience is UNAWARE or ignorant. Geesh….

Yah. Should be convincing even if it’s fictional and Steven, it’s ‘GA yim GA choe’ (giggle, giggle).

  19. Hi Geraldine

Oh no!! It looks like I’m a jinx!! Last trip to Chiang Mai, we were stranded by the demonstrations in Bangkok. Then in Yunnan… a few tremors which sent our Singapore party scurrying down 14 floors out into the street.

This time: A full-blown typhoon?? Of course I’m praying that it’ll only be some rain and strong winds. Retreat into the hotel or shopping centre, eat dim sum and wait for the weather to clear…

Geraldine: Do you have a typhoon shelter in your apartment complex? Might have to lease it on October 5 when I’m there.

  20. Yikes, Kenneth,

It does seem you are, erm, jinxed……

I think it will be fine by the time you get here (knock on wood – knock, knock).

Unfortunately, there is no typhoon shelter in my compound. Will the guard house do? Kekekekkeee.

Will keep you posted on the weather.

  21. Hi,

    Typhoon is gone………phew!

The weather will be very bad tomorrow – thunderstorms and endless rain and will continue to rain till the end of the week with some sunshine on SAT!!

Sunday will be fine and Monday is excellent with low humidity. Guess autumn is finally here (next week). Something to look forward to. Yippie!

  22. Hello Geraldine

Thanks for the update. My sister is in Hong Kong now so its helpful to know whats happening over there.

So now you can go and get your cheongsam done on Monday :)

I am sure you will look babelicious in a cheongsam.

    Take care

    Cheers
    Caroline Gee

  23. Hi Geraldine,

thanks for the weather update. It saves me the time checking on the weather forecast…not bad. Already getting the autumn wind in the morning. Hooray! sunshine on SATURDAY…looking forward to our very own Mid-Autumn Festival celebration (the HK equivalent of Mooncake Festival).

  24. Hi Caroline,

    You’re welcome.

With the fine weather starting next week, will go get my cheongsam made. I have till then to tone, whatever, so as not to give the tailor ‘stress’ during measurements. Kekekekee…..

‘Babelicious’! Thank you, dear. You are so kind.

    Take care,

  25. Hello Ivy dear,

    You’re also welcome.

The forecast says sun and rain on Sat, though. Keeping my fingers crossed that Causeway Bay only has sun on that day.

Have you bought your lanterns yet? The other day I was at some place (forgot where) and they have nice lantern decorations which makes me plan to buy a few for my home this year.

    See you real soon……….

  26. Hi Ivy,

Is your place howling the whole day like it’s typhoon out there?? My place has been very windy and exactly like the T8 we had had without a drop of rain!!

It’s still howling……….checked the weather and understand it has to do with some low pressure, still, this is strange when it has been such a beautiful day and soooo cooolll…..

  27. Hi Geraldine #30,

Nice update on the weather forecast in HK. Funny isn’t it? HK’s howling but no rain….but here in Spore, no howling but it’s been raining cat & dog the last couple of days ! Honestly, I prefer sunny days to rain cos the latter makes me miserable :(

Looking forward to meeting you & Ivy soon.

    Cheers & Goodnitzzz
    Suzhang

  28. Hello Sue,

Thanks for Sg’s weather update, too! Didn’t know it had been raining. Yes, wet weather does make a person miserable.

Hope when we are in town, the weather will be fine again.

Looking forward to our trip and gathering!!

  29. Wei Gerald-thing,

I was glued to the tv last nite watching the new canto drama series ???. May not your cup of tea but it is a lady-show and you get to see a lot of beautiful costumes and accessories. Story line is only so-so but it is played by many experienced actresses.

Oh, yes, the weather, I have been waiting for this cool air to come for the past months…here at long, long last. Time to air my winter clothing. No, I don’t get the howling wind at home but I know it is very windy outside. I could feel the wind pushing me as I walk.

Should be less windy today but air will be very dry for the next few months…have been using a lot of moisturiser. This is the best time of the year here.

  30. Hi dear,

I am still the ‘thing’…….big sigh……..I ask heaven (Terence favourite)……and by the way, Gerald is my brother. Kekekekeee.

I am aware of this latest series; happened to switch to this channel the other night (actually watched a little) and yes, love the beautiful costumes and accessories. The actresses are very seasoned and professional and extremely BITCHY as required. I can imagine this being a hit with a good cast.

Autumn is definitely here especially today – kinda chilly but very, very nice. Yep, the best time of the year; no more humidity and just before the extreme cold sets in.

    Dress warmly dear friend.
