What if I decided to start a blog?

Terence have clear intention to pass over the mantle of hosting the Silverhairs website and is still waiting for an interested party or the SHE will take over. I cannot imagine having SHC without Terence. What will it be like if he is not around to check on us?

Since joining SHC I have invested a lot of time and effort in organizing activities for the Club. I feel a sense of belonging, we get to meet new friend and doing a lot of thing together. The feelings was great as we rub shoulders with all kind of people.

I still remember my first outing at the Botanic Gardens and having to meet the Indian Chief in person. Such an unassuming man he is. It make you want to be part of this group of people.

If I run a blog, my expectation is to remove two taboos. MLM will be permitted subjected to certain contraints and religion can be discuss only with regard to Bible studies. Discrimination and derogatory remarks about other religions is not permitted.

MLM plays a part in my life and need to be fully explored. Religion matters to me because I want to stay connected with eternal values and hope!

What is your view?

  1. Hi Dan,

I read this Post of yours with interest; so I think I shall share some views.

In 2004, I had wanted to find some friends of about the same age while I was living in Bangkok, and while many may not believe it, I did advertise in the papers for some friends to live in Bangkok. The response was so so; and this spurred me into forming a Club. At that time, I was not aware of this word called Blog; just wanted to start a club and for it to be called SilverHairsClub. My hosting company recommended me to use WordPress; and I stucked with it since 2005. It was only in later years that I knew it was a blog.

You may not believe that my spelling is bad. But if members were to read the early Posts and comments, you will know that there was objection to the word SilverHairsClub; first because there is no “s” in the word “Hairs”. But, as a lot of time, effort and money had been spent into promoting the word “SilverHairsClub”, I could not afford to change the name.

The original thinking was to have a club; and not a blog. But we all know today that the blog is the engine behind the SilverHairsClub. I learnt this the hard way.

Dan, I am sure you have your own ideas about starting a blog; and it is good that you have given thought to removing two of SHC’s taboos; and asking for opinion. I am a strong supporter of religions and have clear views on my political inclinations. It is because I have worked in the media and publishing industry for years that SHC has added these taboos. On the personal side, I have no objections to MLM. It’s SilverHairsClub that has these objections or taboos.

It is quite easy and cheap to start a blog. The challenge is to make it interesting enough to attract readers and participants.
My view is that if you start a blog that allows MLM, it is possible that you may have many MLM participants but they will be selling to each other. There will not be many end consumers reading your blog.
Most people like myself is already inundated with unsolicited spam mails selling everything from from houses to teaching us how to increase the length of our penis. I expect females also receive such help. I receive 100s of spam mails everyday for each of my email addresses. Fortunately, I have a spam programmes that isolate them for deletion. I think not many people would deliberately log into a blog with MLM marketeers waiting to sell more things to them.
To make it worst your blog would discuss the Bible. This will reduce your audience to only Christian MLM participants only.
If you are thinking of taking over a social blog like SHC. I think it will be the quickest way to kill it. People who joins social blogs mostly just want to make friends. Most people just avoid someone who wants to sell things to them There are people who makes friend, then sell their products. But most people would feel used by these new ‘friends’.
And as for bible discussion. That should be done in church or a Christian website. You forgot there are many people who have their own religion and people like me…who love to meet all the fun people living in hell. You don’t want to discuss the Bible with me.
I can write this to you because I know you are able to distinguish between a discussion with differing views and an unfair derogative criticism. Also, you are a worthy friend.

  3. Terence,

Are you and SHC the same decision making machine?

Tian Soon, your sharing was very enlightenig. I am just expressing my viewpoint. It is easy to say ‘I dun believe in MLM’ or that our way of depending on our livelihood imposes on the will of others.

Many of you are set in life due to the fact that you undergone higher education and that you have work very hard to be where you are today. But consider others that are not so privilege, they need to depend on an existence on whatever earning they can survive on. MLM is just another source of earning, almost like for ‘bread and butter’! Why deprive them?

I sat twice for my GCE ‘O’ level, each time I went into the examination i would stare into space. My mind became blank and I have to submit blank exam papers. You can see I have diffuculty in expressing myself here.

I have been with SHC for almost five years. Not once did I try to sell anything to anyone. I believe friendship need to be cultivated over time.

As for Bible study, it is something I enjoy. Sad to say I have lost touch with attending church.

  4. Hi Dan #3,

Not too sure what you meant in your question. All decisions relating to events are made by EOs. Decisions on the rules were formulated during the setup of SHC. Maybe, if you are specific, I will answer them.

  5. Hi Dan,

I’m glad to have the taboos lifted up and empathise your feeling and experiences. however why not politics?.I find interesting and entertaining.

I’m opened to anything new, interesting or challenging.however I agreed with what Lim Tian Soo views, so I think there must be a limit maybe like sharing their experiences with certain products for MLM.

As for religion, they may share their experiences with quotes from scriptures.

Maybe we can talk on anything that is under the sun when we are in the group gathering

  6. Terence #1,

‘On the personal side, I have no objections to MLM. It’s SilverHairsClub that has these objections or taboos.’

Can you distinguish between the two, you and SHC are the same?

Jayne, those suggestions that you put forth is anathema to the fairy godmother, must tread with care.

And Terence, Jayne have not broken any taboos but offer some suggestions. Does it warrant any reprimand or threat?

    Dan
