IT Interest Group Venue for Monthly Discussion

In Apr 27th, I mentioned that we are looking for a suitable venue for IT Interest Group (ITIG) monthly discussion.
I am pleased to inform, finally we have the green light to conduct our IT discussion in Leng Kee Community Centre on the 3rd Friday of each month. See location map http://www.streetdirectory.com/asia_travel/travel/travel_id_4999/travel_site_11456/

I have proposed a group size of not more than 20 per session. 16 from SHC and 4 from the general public through Leng Kee CC for a start. Details of the first gathering in Sept. will be announced in SHC web site in the first week of Sept.

For those interested, please view post during the first week of the month to confirm your attendance. You can also feedback, on this post, any IT topic you are interested to further your skills.

For those interested, please note that the CC only provide us a classroom with tables and chairs, no computer. If you have your laptop, iPad, tablets or any smart devices, you can bring along to the classroom.

  1. Welcome Peter (#1). I will put you up as the first person when the post is out sometime first week of Sept. By the way, please note the venue and the date/time in the post. Also, please provide me with your IC number (as required by the CC). Do not write your IC details in the post but email to me at hewlee@gmail.com.

Hi Karen (#2). I have obtained approval from Leng Kee Community Centre to have our SHC monthly IT discussion on the 3rd Friday of each month in a classroom but without computers – only tables and chairs. At least, this is better and quieter than what we have been doing in Plaza Singapura Foodcourt. The time is from 3.00PM to 5.00PM

I hope to borrow from the CC a projector and a screen to display our discussion.

  3. Hi Vivian (#4) – I normally would like to conduct IT discussion in the South, that’s where I reside. In the past, I organize SHC IT discussions in public food courts, but this was not satisfactory – too noisy.

My objective in forming this ITIG is not commercial – just for like-minded seniors sharing IT skills and spending quality time together.

All SHC members (north/east/south/west) and members of the public are welcome to join in this IT discussion in Leng Kee CC.

For SHC members, please respond to the monthly SHC post and for members of the public, please contact Leng Kee CC.

At the moment, I would like to see how the Leng Kee (time) involvement getting along.

  4. From Daisy Chua,

It has been ages since I last participated in SHC activities. I would like to join ITIG but know not how to register online as I am poor at cyberspace. I have forgotten my user name and password and am waiting for Terence Seah to advise me what to do. I registered with SHC several years ago.

My knowledge of computer used to be confined only to where the switch is. Since then, I have progressed to email. I would like to learn about Linkedin, tweeter, Skype and any other IT skills the group will impart. When I read about your interest group, it was like a long lost wish came true in that I can learn in an environment with similar age group participants without feeling guilty of being so ignorant at IT.

Hope I can be one of the 16 members for the proposed first session on 21st Sept 2012 at Leng Kee CC.

  5. Welcome and thank you for your interest in ITIG Daisy Chua (#6). Hope your user ID and password is reinstated soon so that you can post your comments yourself.

Most likely the first session of our ITIG gathering in Leng Kee CC will be on the 21st Sept 2012 at 3.00PM to 5.00PM. Please view SHC web site after first week of Sept to confirm.

So far, I have received three participants, pre-registered. They are, Peter Lim, Peng Peng and Daisy Chua. I have limited the first session to 16 participants from SHC and 4 possibly from the public through Leng Kee CC.

  6. Hi Hew Lee

I’m interested. Pl count me in. However, I’m not sure whether I’ll be able to catch-up as I’m not very IT savvy. I’ve only a table-top pc and not a laptop. Will the Apple S4 hp help?

How did you manage to get permission to conduct the IT course at Leng Kee CC? Just wondering if you’ll be venturing to the Kembangan CC in the near future.

    Regards,
    Gabriella

  7. Welcome to ITIG Alice (#8), Lilian (#9) and Gabriella (#10). Wow, before I prepare the posting, there are already 6 participants pre-registered. For those who have not emailed me the IC number, please do so – as required by the CC.

Gabriella: Most of the time I will be using the laptop, iPad and a smart phone to demonstrate skills on the screen. If you do not have one or not able to bring to the classroom, you can still ask relevant questions. I am sure someone in the class can share their IT skills with you.

Pat Oei, one of our SHC members, is a grass-root member in Leng Kee CC (LKCC), He arranged a meeting for me to see the Director of the CC. I went and explained what I am doing on ITIG for SHC members and would like to have a quiet place for the discussion. Recently he informed me it is OK. I intend to focus our ITIG discussion in one location with a classroom size of 20 (16 from SHC and 4 from the public through LKCC. Anyone (from north, east, south west of the island) are welcome to join in this ITIG discussion. After all, we are all seniors sharing our IT skills together and having some fun to realize how technology has changed our lifestyles. We can also prove to our children or grand children – grandpa and grandma can (also know how to use the iPad or smart devices). So in the next father’s or mother’s day, request for an iPad.

  8. Hi Hew Lee #11

Thanks… I have a smart phone (Apple 4S), I suppose that will do for the time being. Btw, do we have to pay the CC and if so, how much?

Hi Pat Oei: Pl see Hew Lee’s comments at #11 (para 3). Kudos on your initiative in helping to secure the venue.. haha! Are you helping Hew Lee as his co-EO? Believe you are also v IT savvy?

    Cheersssssssssssssssss,
    Gabriella

  9. Hi Gabriella (#10)and Hew Lee,

I would like to join the session but awaiting Hew Lee’s confirmation of date/time to see if I can make it.

If I am able/unable to make it, would you be interested in borrowing my spare Notebook (albeit a little slow) for the session?

    Regards!

  10. Yew Tiong (#21) – 3rd Friday of Sept is on 21st. This is the first time we are using Leng Kee CC as our meeting place. It is just a fun session to share our IT experiences on those smart devices all of us have invested in.

Like our health, there is a Chinese saying – “Sickness enters from the mouth and Troubles come out from the mouth”. This is also true for Smart devices you are using. If anything “free”, you take or download (never mind just download, don’t like just delete away), or not careful in accepting any “mass” emails, – soon, one day, somebody (you think is from one of your trusted friends) saying he/she is in deep trouble and urgently need help and money from you. You are given specific instruction how you can help or send your money to. If you are not thinking, you may be ripped of with a few thousand dollars.

Also, with a smartphone, you can email (sending out) or communicate (talk) – you can get into trouble with your wife/husband, or friends or even with the authorities if you do not conform.

  11. Hi Yew Tiong #21

Tks for your kind and generous offer. However, I’ll just make use of my Apple S4 iphone for the time-being.

I can serve the net, read emails etc on this phone, albeit the screen is smaller than the Apple i-pad.

Hope to c you at the IT sessions.

    Best regards,
    Gabriella

  12. Hi Hew Lee (#22)

Thanks for enlightening me on the usefulness of Smart technologies that you will be sharing.

Yes, I would like to pre-register for the course.

    Hi Gabriella (#23),

Noted that you do not need the notebook.

Yes, will give you a ride if I am coming from my house.

    Good Day to ALL!

    yew tiong
