{"id":40132,"date":"2020-05-09T15:13:05","date_gmt":"2020-05-09T07:13:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/silverhairsclub.com\/?p=40132"},"modified":"2020-12-06T22:53:45","modified_gmt":"2020-12-06T14:53:45","slug":"40132","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silverhairsclub.com\/?p=40132","title":{"rendered":"Our Peranakan friends among us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Singapore Peranakan culture can be traced to their links in <a title=\"Malacca\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malacca\">Malacca<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Singapore\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Singapore\">Singapore<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Penang\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Penang\">Penang<\/a>.\u00a0 Originally from the southern provinces of China, the immigrants travelled south to Peninsula Malaysia, inter-married and created a distinct culture Peranakan,\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>According to Laura Wee, Nyonya is the term for women and Baba for men.\u00a0 These terms apply <span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">to the populations of\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-weight: 300;\" title=\"Han Chinese\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Han_Chinese\">Chinese<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u00a0descent in the\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-weight: 300;\" title=\"Great Britain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Britain\">British<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-weight: 300;\" title=\"Straits Settlements\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Straits_Settlements\">Straits Settlements and <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">the island of <\/span><a class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"font-weight: 300;\" title=\"Java (island)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Java_(island)\">Java<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> and other locations, which have adopted the <\/span><a style=\"font-weight: 300;\" title=\"Nusantara\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nusantara\">Nusantara<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> customs and most have lived for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">generations along the S<\/span><a style=\"font-weight: 300;\" title=\"Strait of Malacca\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strait_of_Malacca\">traits of Malacca<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.\u00a0 Peranakans\u00a0are usually educated and are able to speak the father&#8217;s language and mother&#8217;s dialect.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We have a number of members who are Peranakans.\u00a0 Some of whom I know include Kenneth Tan, Agnes Seow,\u00a0 Sue Chan, Laura Wee and Catherine Soon.\u00a0 I also remember Ronald Wie.\u00a0 Keys words associated with Peranakan include Malacca, Penang, Phuket, Peranakan food, baju kebaya and the sarong.<\/p>\n<p>Since our first fashion parade, and for a long time, I have wanted to gather the Peranakans together.\u00a0 We shall form the Peranakan group now, and if you are Peranakan, please WhatsApp &#8220;Peranakan&#8221;
