Dear SHC members, <\/p>\n

Let’s take a leisurely stroll back in time, to the era of the five kings and the golden age of 14th<\/sup> century <\/span><\/strong>Singapore<\/span><\/strong>!  <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Malay locals when they received Raffles pointed him to a hill called Bukit Larangan (Forbidden Hill).  Around 1860, the colonial government turned this hill into a fort.  From that time until the 1970s, <\/span><\/strong>Fort<\/span><\/strong> <\/span><\/strong>Canning<\/span><\/strong> was used as a military base – first by the British, the the Japanese and lastly by the Republic’s armed forces.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Fort Canning Park – I am sure many would know where it is but perhaps just like me, had visited it only to attend wedding receptions, events and concerts.  <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

For those who tarry to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the park, there is a lot to discover and much to behold.  There were <\/span><\/strong>many marvelous looking trees and interesting fauna. Majestic trees, a ‘heritage tree’ truly gnarled with age!  It is said that the park is not only a gathering place for birds but also a home and hunting ground to populations of squirrels, bats and lizards.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Park has several main entrances\/exits.  We shall attempt to cover the entire Park in about about 2 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n

Place: <\/span><\/strong>Fort<\/span><\/strong> <\/span><\/strong>Canning<\/span><\/strong> <\/span><\/strong>Park<\/span><\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

Start Time:  <\/span><\/strong>we start the walk at <\/span>4.30pm<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Meeting point:<\/span><\/u><\/strong> Penang Road, Park Mall (near the Lift Lobby) <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Getting there:  <\/strong>Best mode of transport is<\/span> <\/strong>by MRT – Dhoby Ghaut Station.  <\/p>\n

By bus – bus-stop opposite Park Mall (Penang Road is a 1-way traffic) 124, 162, 167, 171, 174, 175, 190, 502, 7, 14, 16, 36, 65, 77, 106, 111.  <\/span><\/p>\n
