Cycling Caught On ……

I ride very regularly n at least twice a week usually in the early morning and occasionally, on Friday night until early Saturday morning. Most times, I cycle on the road.

Am just thinking there are like-minded people like me who like to do the same but have no kakis or company 2 go along with. Or perhaps like to build up confidence riding on the road. Here comes the opportunity to have you to be part of this group.

The criteria you must have are – own bike, helmet, front n rear lights. If possible, a spare inner tube in event of puncture (this is prefer because tires come in different sizes). Bikes can be marketing, foldable, racing, mountain or delivery types. Should you have thoughts of changing your present bikes, that can come later after you have better your riding experiences. Importantly NO HELMET, NO FRONT and REAR LIGHTS = NO RIDE. Lights are for alerting motorists on the road of your presence n helmets are for protection.

The route will vary, could start from any point in the West n end in the East n return. You can join in or end at any point along the route. Distance varies but pace will be kept between 15 to 20 kmph (comfortable and leisure). This is equivalent to the pace you are doing at normal monthly cycling. The ride will likely be fixed on 2nd or 4th Friday nite of each month. Frequency will be increase as demand goes.

For info, this Route is firm –

Queenstown > River Valley Road > Hill Street > High Street > Esplanade > Nicoll Highway > Stadium Road > Tanjong Rhu > Fort Road (15 km)

Fort Road > ECP > Coastal Road > Changi Village (20 km)

We like to hear from you that you are coming to join us.

  1. I like this….”..can join in or end at any point along the route….”.

But then how is someone from Sembawang be able to join in any of these routes???…

But first let go buy my bike.
Last Sunday, I passed this bicycle shop near my place but then saw so many bikers gathering in the shop, I chicken out…:-)). I will go one of the weekdays. Noboday around, so can slowly try out the bikes.:-)

  2. Hi JuneL

Guess u hv waited very long 4 such moment liao. To answer your questions.

From Sembawang, no problem. Can map out the route 4 u. Join us at tmr mthly cycling, we work this out 2gether.

Buying bike, never feel shy in the company of pros or experienced ones. Ask them 4 guidance n advice n they are 2 glad 2 share wif u. Not 4getting they will help u 2 get the best pick at best price. Of cos not 4getting 2 make known your budget. Best is that your budget is not restrictive. A few of us actually bought bikes recommended by the experienced riders. See 2 believe.

  3. My plan:
    1)get a bike b4 end Apr
2)practise my cycling…intend to cycle from my place to my parent’s place at Seraya Crescent, Upper Thomson Road..I visit them almost every Sat….(my heart pumping very fast as I write this, not from excitement but frm fear!! :-))) bec I am not a good cyclist!!
3)once I can do 2) without a problem, then I shall come to you to map out the route..:-))….but then hor, I hve those bikers at the Sembawang shop, maybe can join them instead!.

Btw, $500 can get a good bike for starters?

  4. Hi JuneL

    1) Gd decision
    2) Yes, practices make perfect. I believe u are already gd
    3) No problem. By then u can even map your own ride. Here is the link – http://www.mapmyride.com/
    4) Budget $500. Quite gd. Always leave it 2 last as u need more room 2 choose your pick. It shd only come in aft u hv pick your choice.
    5) Dont 4get 2 buy helmet, at least one spare inner tube, front n rear lights 2gether. U can leave out Hand pump, tools n tire lever 4 the time being.

  5. Hi YK,

I’ve stop cycling long distance for a while. I used to cycle with my husband from Lor Ah Soo to East Coast Park and back evey Sat. We usually start at 6 in the morning. I have been using my Diamond Back bike for the last 15 years. Now I only cycle around the neighbourhood. Do I need a new bike if I intend to join you for this biking adventure. Please advise.

    Regards,
    Melissa

PS: Due to time factor I’ve not join you guys for the monthly cycling meet. FYI. I’ve signed up for the 15KM airport runway event on 21 June’09 (I’m using my old faithful bike)

  6. Hi Melissa

Guess u just need more practices. Do come n join us in your present bike. Get a new one when it is deemded necessary otherwise just get it serviced. I have scheduled some weekly time slot for training leading 2 the 2 Events coming up in Jun n Jul 09. With nite riding added, the rides will even be different n adventurous.

We hope 2 set up a core cycling group where members who want 2 ride more n on different routes can come n ride 2gether regularly. Good chances for those who can confidently ride on the road 2 lead the less confident ones.

  7. Hey Yew Kwong,

I’m glad that you are very safety minded. I note that you didn’t mention cycling gloves. Gloves give me better handle grip. They had cushioned my palms several times before otherwise they would be bruised.

  8. Yes, I would like to join this cyling event..I have been cyling to East Coast every other day , usually at night, start from 8pm end at around 10pm,, looking for kakis too..
Beside cyling to EC,I cycle alot aroung the neighbourhood,(Chai Chee, Bedok, Tampines & pasi Ris). and also do all my errant using the bike.beside cyling to EC.

  9. Hi Juno

Glad 2 hear that. We have regular mthly cycling on 3rd Sat of the month. Do come n join us. Meeting place is at rear of McDonald at 3 pm.

Other than this we do have ad-hoc rides starting from different locations n times besides ECP. Will keep u in the loop. Btw, it’s compulsory to possess helmet, front n rear blinker lights if u are 2 ride wif us. Optional items are spare tube, gloves, hand pump, etc.
