SHC monthly gathering cum cycling – Saturday, 15 May 2010 East Coast Parkway

It’s being a long time since we had a PotLuck session.  This time, we will have our Potluck session on the East Coast Parkway, where the beach has always been.

  • Place:  East Coast Parkway, place will be same as the first beach potluck. 
  • Date:  Sat 15 May 2010.
  • Time:  Late afternoon, 1400 hrs to 1800 1900 hrs.
  • Food and drinks:  Bring something, a dish or drink? enough for 4 people.
  • Dresscode:  shorts, slippers, swim gear, tees, anything light.  Make sure you can sit on the ground, and be  prepared for all weather.

The spot is in between Pit 27C and Shelter (or Pavilion) where u find two bench-cum-table near each other. YK will be there at 2 pm.

  3. Great if 1 bird can kill 2 stones but what if the bird kena squeezed by the stones and starts to groan in pain? And it might not be that same useful bird again.

    Cyclists do have a big role to play. Not many SHCians attending the pot-luck will drive and the nearest bus-stop is at Marine Terrace, almost 1 km away. Cyclists can carry/transport the food, drinks etc on their bikes. The bird stays alive, the stones unturned.

    The monthly cycling is confirmed “ON” on same day. Cycle to your heart content and then eat till u fill up your tummy.

    As I will not be able to transport the food on my bike. Neither can I cook and bring them. Let me sponsor the cost for chicken nuggets (maybe 2 big packets). Can someone help on my behalf to buy, cook and bring them? Deeply appreciate.

  12. Haha, your first time with SHCians by the beach? Dont worry, you missed little…….SHCians dont often gather at the beach, probably this will be the 4th time if my memory serves me right. The exact location will be announced closer to the date, I am sure.

    Gals shy away from wearing their biks but guys love to parade in them so it’ll again be quite a sight If you too like to be in one, again dont worry. Terence will bring his entire wardrobe of biks albeit unwashed.

    Barrring the sea turning yellow or red, I too will join.

  14. Hi Ah Nee, Yew Kwong and regular cyclists,

    I would like to find a place for the next SHC monthly gathering, near the beach and near MacDonalds. There are many spots, but some are too crowded.

    Can you recommend a spot, say 10 m by 20 m, near some rocks, with a sala shelter, and maybe nice grass to sit on. Preferably with a toilet or washroom, not to far away. And, of course, easy to recognise.

    Can you tell me what time you will be at the beach and what time you will finish cycling? Shall use these timings to decide potluck time.

    The place, I would suggest pick the same spot as the last time.

    The time, we can put it as 6.30 p.m. Those who wish to be early can meet at McDonald at 2 p.m. and walk over to the spot. Otherwise individuals can go to spot directly. Will put up location map once confirms.

    Preparation, we can be there early. 3 p.m. I will recce the spot this week. Preferably near a pavilion where we can run for shelter nearby if the rain comes.

    Even if i cant go to your party…I know exactly a nice cosy spot with cushiony carpet-like thick grass..big tall casurina(donno how to spell) trees..a wide longkang to fish or dream..lots of shelters..many benches & v clean restrooms!even there’s workout area after makan2.
    Its the other end of the road..near Ford Road!..its our favourite place where some of us hangout!..sshhh..hehe :)
    its quite nearby the old big splash..or Twenty-Six!

  18. Norlinda, no doubt at the end of Fort Road, that place is serenely nice & cosy for us to hang out….it is not convenience for some who have no cars and I think buses does not travel until there. “Tak jadi” lah……

  20. Please register me for the event. I will bring anything from any hawker centre nearby that is within cycling distance.

    By the way do we need to bring food enough for 4 people? If everyone bring food enough for 4 people we are going to have a problem — how to dispose of the extra food after the event especially nowadays everyone is talking about “Going Green”. Of course I am assuming that there is no freeloader and everyone will do his or her part to bring a food or drinks. Maybe enough food for 1 or at the most 2 person will be just nice.

    The last time SHCians having the pot luck at EC was some years back, I was not a SHC member then, so I don’t know where the exact spot is. Yew Kwong had said at @18 that he will recee a best spot for the pot luck this weekend. Perhaps you may consider that place where we have your Tent built for overnight camping. That place is near toilet, near Burger King, near the Pavilion, also very near the Beach…..hahaha…..with that in mind, I think we have to be there early to “chope” the place.

  24. Anyone out there wants to walk from Kembangan MRT to Marine Parade Blk 1(next to the Convent). Then take the overhead pedestrain bridge towards the seaside.
    Where do you all want to gather ? I know from Zero (0 Km)point Fort Road to the other end Zero point(0 Km) after the National Sailing Club.
    There are toilets along ECP, so no need to worry, if you need to “loose some wastage” after eating too much.
    From the bicycle kiosk about 3.5km mark there is a toilet which is also near the pedestrain bridge connecting Marine Parade. Then you walk towards Changi direction, there is a twin toilet with basins in the centre connecting the male and female toilet 4.5km. As you walk along the way you will see the single story Chalets, after passing the double storey chalet 5.km there is another toilet near the Seafood centre.Walk further and you will see the “lagoon” 360 degres restaurant,after the lagoon is the Hawker’s Centre,there is a toilet inside the hawker’s centre and opposite the “sandcastle” near a bicycle kiosk, Walk further up and before reaching Bedok Jetty there is another toilet on your left which is also near the “ram” for youngsters “trying to break their legs “with their skate boards flying and twirling in mid air.After Bedok Jetty abot 7.5km there is another toilet before you see some over hanging flowers. Walk further up a slope, not steep and you will see a big carpark for heavy vehicles,
    If your legs refuse to move further, there is a bus stop where Bus no: 36 will ply through every 15 mins or so.
    Walk towards the sea side and you will see the 8km mark from there you may want to know what’s there after, you will pass “SPARKS” where you can see a camp for outward bound training.Keep on walking and you will see the National Sailing Club and there is a toilet there at 9.5km.
    There is a break of the track outside the toilet but if you want to walk some more carry on after seeing the sailboats storage centre. Continue until you see the Golf Course, the road becomes secluded after the 10km mark then you see the NS chalet. I think that will take you about an hour from 4km mark , it seems that it would be only a short distance but actually you would have completed 12 km.
    Anyone wants to try walking? If not just cycle or roller blade. Have fun!

    For exact location of the SHC May monthly gathering, let’s wait for Yew Kwong to put up a map. The location will be about 100m right of and opposite MacDonald, where the beach is, same as where we first held our ECP potluck years ago.

    Please think about what you will be bringing, enough for 4 people. Do not bring too much, or we may have to pack them home. I recommend everybody bring a bottle of water or drink. This is the most difficult item.

  37. I am baffled by the term “finger food”……traces of food (remnants from picking/snatching food with the fingers?) or all 10 fingers each carry a skewer of food (fish ball, bean curd etc)?

    Johnson Lock is hardly seen/heard for sometime. Maybe he’s locked up by someone, even then, will get him out to roast a duck for this occasion and that’s what I’ll bring – Johnson walking with his duck to be roasted.

  40. Wow, time to get excited. Our next monthly gathering venue at ECP, date and time has been decided. It also coincides with the cycling event. SHCians who have an itch to cycle can contact the cycling team.

    For the exact venue, click onto the digital map, provided by Yew Kwong. The event starts at 2pm and ends at 6pm. Participants are welcome to bring a food item, snack, drink sufficient for 4 people. Do not bring too much, or we may need to lug the food home. Liquids encouraged.

    Anyone can play the guitar? if you bring your guitar along, you dont need to bring food.

    Let’s all be prepared to sit on the floor. So, shorts, tees, slippers are encouraged.

    Yat Sing is going to organise 3 good old games. No idea what the games will be like, but sure it will be fun. Come and join the games.

    This monthly gathering is a great venue to meet new and old friends. No formalities. Might sound funny, but no need to bring name tags. But if you do, it can be nice.

    The ending time should be later than at 6pm. Cycling finishes at 6.30pm. Members can arrive from 2 pm onwards but if u arrive earlier than 2pm, please help to occupy the bench/es. I will be at the spot at 2pm to occupy at least one bench otherwise we may be grounded.

    We can have high tea, happy hours and dinner while admiring the sea, people n scenery. Maybe later ending wif supper b4 heading home.

Terence has promised to bring a beach ball and Henry-Y’s soccer ball can come handy as a seat if it’s feared that the boys will go play football leaving the lasses to sulk with nothing to talk among themselves. Obviously, they too can squat next to Henry-Y to hear this coach me explain the cumm process, and with him bending low and making the biggest sacrifice in his life, demonstrate how the joy of IT can be further enhanced.

    Btw, since it appears that no one is bringing forks/spoons, we will all likely be using our fingers to pick the food (so that explains why so many have already told us that they’ll be fingering food). As such, please promise not to pick your nose at least 48 hours b4 2 p.m. this Saturday 15/5/2010, and pls pls wash your hands thoroughly b4 you come.

    The gathering cum cycling starts from 2.00 – 7.00 pm. I think the crowd will stream in around 4.00 – 5.00 pm, that’s when the weather is cooler. And considering the cycling ends before 7.00 pm; how about extending the gathering time till 9.00 pm? Just thinking only…..the night is till young……hehehe….. :)

    Ronald-L, in the good old days of young, rain or shine, we played football b4 school started at 1 p.m. If drenched, we wd just remove our shirts and shorts to wring dry while the teacher went thru her motion of teaching (and stealing peeks at us). So, no, it’s just too sissy to wear ponchos for anythg even if it rains.

    Could have unseated Pele or Maradona as King had my mother not threatened to disown me for playing too much football. Btw, you hv the great looks of Gordan Banks…..or is it Gordon Brown…..oh, yes, it’s actually golden brown.

    Regarding the ball games, I believe input from our SHC ladies are justly appropriate. You know, they say women hold up half the heavens, that’s so true, esp SHC women, their ingenuity & creative ideas even in mundane things like a Mahjong game is a testament to that.

    One idea is to ask everybody to bring a handkerchief.
    And divide all those who wants to play beach soccer into 2 teams. With one team members wearing a handkerchief & the other team members not wearing. I reckon not all would want to play beach soccer, so it wont be that crowded. We can even call it the Red & White team.

    We can then devise other games based on this Red & White team rivalries. All this is for the fun of it. Anybody have good ideas , can contribute too. I bet Tim wud hv some good ideas by tomorow morning hahaha

  66. Terence, hopefully your beach-ball isnt the inflatable type…..with strong sea breeze, that kind of ball is too light for play. The soft already inflated beachball, which can be played as a volleyball or kick around as a soccer ball, will be ideal.

    Henry-Y, you siao huh, expect macho men like me and the giraffe to carry hankerchieves? Too ??? and Na-? hor.

    When opposing teams cannot afford jerseys but still want to play soccer, the solution is simple. Toss a coin and let fate decide which team to strip and play it bare-top.

    So, if you really want your idea to be a sound – not siao – one team will play it bare-bodied. Of cos we know btwn the men and ladies teams, which team has more to show off.

    Cant wait for Saturday beach soccer liao.

    We wouldnt want to start early because 1) weather is still hot. 2) 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm is the best time to cycle and enjoy scenery. 3) it’s the standard time.

    However u can join others like Douglas, Joyce, Patsy and Rose who might be cycling up from Hougang, Punggol and Sengkang area to ECP. Perhaps u might want to cycle up to Changi Village and bck while u are early.

    Here is a simple step by step to PIT NO: 27C.
    If you are taking the bus Nos: 15,16,31,36,43,48,76,196,197,966 drop along Marine Parade Road at Parkway Parade bus stop,(either side).
    Walk towards the multi storey carpark, where you can see NTUC Finest Supermarket next to it, walk behind the supermarket there is an underpass. Walk under and when you reach the end of the tunnel as you face the sea, turn to your left. Walk about 300m and you will see the Pit no: 27C.near 3KM mark.
    It is not at Mc Donalds, it is about 3mins walk from Mc Donalds where you can fine the “TOILETs”. Walk a bit more about .5KM and you will see the biscycle shop and there is a “PUBLIC Toilet” too.
    If you are taking the pedestrain bridge from Blk 1 Marine Terrace, you have to walk about .75km to Pit No; 27C.after passing McDonalds from that end.
    If you get lost look for the landmark on the lampost. walk towards 3KM mark, towards McDonalds. The landmark are posted on bothsides of the lampost. If you cannot find just “jump” into the sea and shout for help we will swim there to rescue you OK.

  89. Thank you Michelle-K, for providing a very detailed guide on the Pit’s location. This is the voluntary spirit thriving in SHC and it is still very much alive.

    I cant find Johnson – his wife must hv Lock(ed) him up so fish ball I shall bring. 40 shd be enough for 4 but certainly not for the 80 even as we continue to count the burgeoning number.

    So, what can happen may be this. The last few in the queue might get to taste a bit of fish ball meat stuck btwn teeth of the fella in front of him/her but amply compensated with a lot saliva and kisses from that front fella.

    Sharing of cos is also the spirit of SHC.

    I hv bought a soft soccer ball for the afternoon. Gals & guys alike will hv no problem kicking it or do the Colonel Sanders’ way…….”toe licking good”.

    A digress. saddened by the passing on of 1 of Spore’s economic tzar. Many hv said hv a lot but to me, fall far short of scratching the itch. Let’s await what LKY will say and what he says always carry that punch and, in this instance, poignant recollections of their days together thru trials & tribulations building up Sg can be expected.

Our 2nd son had a very severe fall and was very seriously injured and is now in the neurological ward. Though his condition has improved and no more in the ICU ward, he is still under intermediate care.

  96. Sorry Terence for appearing out of the blue with our macho man Vincent Khoo at Eastcoast Park. Hence I can only play second fiddle. I could not hold a candle to his fantastic ‘libido’. He is an action hero.

    Vince flew down from the cuckoo nest (ie BKK) and landed in my bosom with flatness, so I initiated to bring him to see the gorgeous SHC ladies at East Coast park. He is living in the dark age without a computer but the funniest think is, he is never lack of contacts of the gentle gender. It is a compliment to Vincent. Now he is complaining of tired eyes after focusing on my sweet sister Sue Chan. Serve Vincent right !! Well, his mind is strong but his flesh is weak. We totally understand him….

    Thanks for organising this gathering. We are so blessed with such fine weather while 2 days before it has been raining cats n dogs. It was v enjoyable for everyone.

    It is only my suggestion that I think it is time that we could organise another SHC potluck gathering in the future at the West Coast Park instead of ECP. There are many BBQ pits and shelters/toilets even on a Sat afternoon and are not fully occupied and for those who had no bicycles and interested in cycling you may rent the pedal bicycles for adults at the pedal bike kiosk.

    Thanks for the wonderful initiative of having a potluck cum cycling cum monthly gatherings. Most of us enjoy the moods and settings found here.

    It was a time to chit-chats and catch up with friend old and new. As the founder and Club Manager you may have a tough time unless more volunteers would come forward to organize more activites and events.

    When Ron played the guitar and Clara sangs, I was tempted to get Joy off the floor for a dance routine on Disco Rock and Square Rumba but do not have the gut to do so.

    I noticed that we do not have a registration desk. Therefore how many actually turned up was unknown. There was some gate-crashers in our midst which may not be important as it was an open area.

    At the end of the day when most of us have left, Terence was left alone to clear and removed all the rubbish and lug them to the bin area. Such is the dedication of our Club Manager for which we are to emulate. Three cheers for Terence!

Unfortunately, most of us were too rngrossed in chats and lazing comfortably on the groundsheets. Still, your rugby side-passing of the ball was fluid and you played a good game in beach volleyball and wd hv played even better if you had not left yr bikinis at home.

    Sorry Terence, I had left earlier to feed the dogs and didnt know that you wd be left with Dan (I reckon Joy too since behinf every successful man is a woman) to pick up the leftovers. Will stay with you in similar situations the next time.

  108. I can see we had an excellent turnout at our monthly gathering cum potluck. It was also a good idea to coincide the event with the regular cycling meet.

    Everybody was busy, catching up with one another. TimL and HenryY were the young team leaders, getting the volleyball teams in action. Yat Sing was wondering how to start the games when everybody were so glued to the mats and chatting. Of course, there were some, new ones, wondering where to start. Keep trying.

    Ronald and Clara softened the afternoon with their songs. It is always exciting to see Rose do her belly dance. Keep up the spirit.

    Food wise, I guess if everybody brings enough for 4, it will still be too much. Next tine, for 3 persons.

    Most members left at 6.30pm. Guess finishing off at 7pm may be too late. Next time, we will have to adjust the time. And hopefully, StevenC can agree to be EO for the next event at West Coast Park.

    So, glad everybody enjoyed. And for those who did not register, the penalty next time is to take off the pants. One layer only.

Meanwhile, if you hv nothing better to do, why dont you drop by at the Kreta Ayer Sq to witness another historical event. So far we hv heard/read a lot of HIM and usually from those in his good books and hv much to thank him for, and also from those who repeat what others say. But those who hv had a brush with him, condemned by him – TCC, NKS, AS, the list can also go on and on – prefer the ??????????????But, personally, I think I know enough of him to say he’s a good chap………..once out of the Game, meddles no more, says nothing and nvr asked for SM or a joystick to play with).

    Thak you for your suggestion. I note your suggestion for the venue. Meantime, I am looking for an EO for another SHC monthly gathering. Once found, I may visit that venue with the EO. If it fits our needs, as indicated in #151, why not?

    Unfortunately, I don’t have too much time in Singapore. Anybody likes to raise his/her hand for the July monthly gathering?
