In Search of a New Identity

Following Terence’s clarion call for new directions, we find ourselves faced with many challenges.  Let’s continue discussing the issues and  our options here.

New face comes with new name. We will start a search for a new identity. This will be next month’s SHC Challenge. Like Toto. Don’t worry. In the meantime, we’ll put the float  to a good  Poor cause. Like Shareholders’ Bonus Dividends.

  1. Caroline ,
the more “Yays” the merrier. :-)
I can imagine how the butterflies are having a field day in your tummy. Don’t worry too much or you won’t enjoy yourself at the D n D.
Thank you in advance for all the work you’ve put into it.
    We will have fun!
    Cheers.

  2. All good parties must come to an end. We have seen the passing of another chapter.

The search for a new identity has helped members to re-focus on their priorities and roles in the club. It does not matter if the road leads back to the starting point. Even if the old way is the now new way, at least it is action in affirmation.

  3. Heehehe! Mary, fastest fingers win!

    Just kidding.

Actually its because the big bosses are out for meetings so got time to read and type.

Also cannot concentrate. Thinking if I have missed out anything for the D&D hiaz!! three more days – so long time …

  4. Terence,
when I read your comment just now, I was about to say “Yay”! but Caroline beat me to it. Haha.
    So it’s still “Silverhairsclub”!!!!

  5. Hi everybody,

On the suggestion of changing the club’s name, I have to express that I prefer to stay with the current name, for a good many reasons. Change is not impossible, altho I like to highlight some difficulties. First, a name change requires cost, as the new name has to be promoted. I dare not dream of doing so within the foreseeable future. Secondly, couple with a name change, the website name has also to be changed. This is not impossible; but again, it can be a nightmare of confusion and additional costs too.

I welcome the suggestions of new names; but I have to apologise that for practical reasons, I am not able to do so. As a challenge, if you wish to initiate a new club with one of the new names and related website name, try it. It’s fun.

  6. Hi Terence,
When I first joined, I thot to myself why called “SilverHairs Club”? Then as time passes, I felt this name has its special meaning. My vote is for “SilverHairs Club”

    Dont change – Thanks!

  7. Heeee, a variation…………

    ’tis my lips for thee, thou judge;

so say KT thru the monkey up on the Scorebot tree.

At DnD look long & hard for me and still no see, blow the pee pee till thou go silly,

No piss the air otherwise the shrine becomes a swine all wet.

  8. KT @# 54

    ’tis not the judge’s lips fear me;

    ’tis the tainted Scorebot trees.

At DnD look thou long and hard for me,

So kiss the air and let the shrine intact be.

    JassmineT

  9. Foaming from the mouth? Dennis Har? Hahaha……

Honesty is my policy so let me tell what happened.

Both DennisH & KT were happily drunk last Fri after Scorebot scored its biggest food/beverage sales ever.

But in what they thought was a less than inebriated corner of their brains, they remembered there wd be kisses.

So DennisH had his mouth wide-opened in anticipation.

KT thought he had stolen a kiss when, with misty eyes, he found a pair of thick sexy lips from a wide-opened mouth waiting.

The kiss was very very wet.

And if Dennis is still foaming, heeee, he must be still playing with the saliva left in there…………

I know cos I was perching up on the Scorebot tree and watching, almost wanted to stop them until I remembered Patrick’s name change suggestion – so, solid hippo at play must be allowed………..

  10. Steven @ #51

You are in charge of the whips and chains for the mooncake festival. Also put a hood over your head.

We’ll smack those people who lost money trading after being taught how to do so.

Come to think of it shall we have a masquarade party at the same time. Can any of those void deck line dancing aunties do ballroom without tripping on their gowns?

    Hee hee

  11. Jas @#53

So fear must you be taint. For surely the judge’s lips you must kiss if thou should win.

At the D&D must you consummate the deal.
Would Ter say as Romeo did (holding Juliet’s as they dance):

“You are like a shrine enclosing a holy relic, and I would be unforgivably uncouth to touch it with my unworthy hand except that I am ready to “kiss away” the damage I have done.”

    Hee hee.

(Dennis is still foaming at the mouth and Tim’s perched on top of the Scorebot’s tree.)

  12. KT @# 47

‘ Till Birnam Wood remove to Dunsinane

I cannot taint with fear.’ (Macbeth)

Till Scorebot trees are safe from sunset Hobo’s Coven

    I cannot reveal.

    JassmineT

  13. “Like Tim. He must be regretting it now…….there is nothing I can do. Except to find him a nicer place……..”

I sure regret not getting the kiss but will hold KT to his words…….since i am easily satisfied so a nicer place means on top of KT’s car….yes, put her there & I’ll kiss……but if you cant deliver yr promise, I can take yr bucket of tears in lieu, no problem…………..

  14. At 49,

….It depends on who calls who for butt kicking.

With some, everybody will be bending forward and scream “MORE !!”
    Masochists ?

  15. Ken @ #37

I was told it was streaked. That’s why you didn’t turn up for the swimming. Are you sure or not. Dye or no dye?

It depends on who calls who for butt kicking. With some, everybody will be bending forward and scream “MORE !!”

  16. Mary @ #40

It is in public domain. It is not for me to take out.

Like Tim. He must be regretting it now. Even if he crawls and cry a bucket of tears, there is nothing I can do. Except to find him a nicer place with a view on Scorebot’s tree.

And except for Tim’s, I really can’t remember who contributed what name. So unless you are going to claim the special author prize next month nobody will know better.

Like all the “Singapore National Dish” consolation winners who turned up early yesterday hoping that Alicia won’t. The trade was profitably done in an hour before we finished talking. (“we” – I and / Andrew). Alicia rushed out earlier saying “She’ll be back”. And something about having to collect a wheelbarrow to carry the cash. ….

Or was it about the kiss from the judge. The last when we left, Dennis was seen foaming at the mouth.

But that’s another story, another place.

    Hee hee

  17. i suggest silverhairsclub name to silverliningsclub instead cos it full of rays. hee .. hee.. just dashing some seasoning to this ‘dish’. well original is still preferable to me

  18. Terence @# 43

Do you mean ‘the name change discussions should go’? Contextual clues tell me you really mean the discussions should go on.

I have thought of a name that will lead naturally to the website name but the coast is not clear to make its debut. Apa macham?

Just joking. Will reveal the new name soon.

    JassmineT

    JassmineT

  19. Hi everybody who has made a suggestion for a name change. I must say it is pretty interesting to see so many recommendations. While I think the name change discussions should go, please also give some thought to what should the name of the website be?

The current club name is SilverHairsClub.
The present website name is http://www.SilverHairsClub.com.

An open discussion is good, so that everybody is aware of the thinking processes behind members.

    Terence Seah

  20. Thanks KT, for putting up this Post on a new identity.

During the 15 March 2008 gathering, it was clear that almost all members prefer the status quo scenario of the SilverHairsClub. Free and easy, no membership fees, keep away from issues of politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling and MLM. As such, we would all work towards maintaining this direction. Without swaying the direction of members thinking, I have held back my view, but I can safely say I am equally in favour of this stand too.

Another group, smaller though, sees a need to have a legal entity or a corporation to manage some of SHC activities. Issues of concern include collection of monies for events, meeting in large groups in public areas and recognition and liaison with govt bodies and corporations. I wont go too much into this here, but we should have a separate discussion on another thread to take this further; if or how to address these concerns further. For those who are keen to participate and join in addressing this view, please raise your hands, and make your ideas known. I am open.

    Terence Seah

  21. Hahaha, Patrick, long time no see but once see, I can laugh till mati………yes, I like it, yr “Solid Homosexual Club”. Real solid lah………..

JonathanO, without seeing her, you already heard enough to chope her hands to shake……once you see her, you wont be able to recognise where home is.

“Screw Humsuplor (or for the gals, Humsupmui) Club”.

Heeeee, I have heard and seen enough of the humsups getting screwed……….lalalala……..

  22. KTWONG,
THIS IS THE THIRD TIME I’M ASKING YOU TO TAKE OUT THE NAME SUGGESTED BY ME, IN JEST. PLEASE DO SO. THANK YOU.
I’m putting this in upper casing in case so you can read me better.

  23. Hey Kenneth Tan and Ronald Wie, thank you very much for your support. :-)
I’m glad there are people who think the same as me about SHC. I was about to conclude that I was standing alone.
Seriously, if Terence himself wants to change the name, I will be supportive of his decision as SHC IS his baby.
    Long live Silverhairs Club!!

  24. Ken, Mary , Tom, Dick and all,

Maybe we should use this forum that Terence has initate to constitutionalise what SHC stands, like what Abe did for USA. Then we dont have to leave poor Mary having to roll up her sleeves ( unless for making Kueh Lapis) everytime some decides to steer SHC where it should not be drifting to.

Reminds me of this words ‘Proud Mary keep on rolling’ keep it on rolling Auntie Baby, you are one hot chick, so dont mess around with her ok.

Changes are good if it helps to improve and strengthen what SHC stands and promotes ..free ,simple social activities for one and all.

  25. Hi guys!!

I don’t think this name changing-name calling is going anywhere… but into a quagmire of clever, cute, wise-cracking, even hair-raising suggestions!

Let’s stick with SilverHairs Club although i’m one of the few who really qualify to be called that.

And Mary… don’t be afraid to kick butt when you need to and you don’t need to apologize for it!

  26. Hi Steven @#27

After the ‘competition’, when it’s safe, I’ll elaborate on ‘Silver Bamboos’. Now continue to pooh-pooh it.

    JassmineT

  27. KT

    @# 30 & 32

No deletion? The playing field is not level then. Unfair! Unfair! But heng ah! No one seems enamoured of my throw-away new names.

A horizontal daching? What’s on your plate? Something ‘So Hot & Chic’?

    JassmineT

  28. Jas @ #16

You have how many? One , two, three ….

You will occupy a higher spot. Hanging mid-section, I will be horizontal like a daching.

Here’s looking up at you kid.

  29. Dear two Js

Glad you are brave and stand up as the proposition for this healthy and robust discussion.

There is no opposition, just discuss the proposal to remain rooted with solid foundation.

A meaningful and purposeful foundation that is worthy of preserving deserves to stand up for.????

  30. How about SHC stands for “Solidarity Homogeneous Club” ?

It is like “Birds of the same feathers flock together”

    Any comment ?

    Patrick Yeo

  31. Jon @ 24

    Hope Not to win!.

“hedge” (metaphorical usage) can mean generally protect against/from risk of. … in life we try to protect against disease(by keeping healthy), making regrettable isions (we learn decision-making skills), anxiety/stress (learn to take things easy..learn to let go..), stagnation (life-ling learning).. etc. Many interpretations are possible with ‘hedge’.

“Silver Hobby Club” – there are activities we could be involved in that might not be considered ‘hobbies’ eg voluntary /community service..etc

Anyway the name has a pleasant ring and creates images of leisure, fun, optimism etc.

    JassmineT

  32. Hi Jassmine,

Glad to have met up with you yesterday..

Re Silver Hedge Club, i would find difficulty to explain what we are “Hedging” against..

If possible, how about “Silver Hobby Club”, where the name is self-explanatory that SHCians join various group activities to explore/develop their hobbies further?

I think we are finally getting closer to a strong contender for Silver Hairs Club…. of course with Terence’s blessings & the majority vote.

  33. Mary/Jassmine & all

Phew, I can keep my helmet away now ;-)

At the very least, the debate has ensured that fellow SHCians have become more fully aware of the heritage that the name SHC has…

hmmm, Silver Heritage Club (another possible nice name???)

See you all at the D&D or even earlier at Friday’s SRC jam if my schedule permits!

  34. Jassmine, #18
I have to admit, it has been quite a bit of fun. You should have seen the grin on my face and heard my chuckles, as I wrote my comments. ;-)

  35. KTWong,
SilverHedge Club? The dictionary definition of hedge:
“fence or boundary formed by closely growing bushes or shrubs”
    and
“protection against possible loss or diminution”

    and more.

Haven’t we had enough of Bushes and losses by now? Hahaha.

  36. Jonathan Ong,
I was there at Bali Lane from about 3pm to 10 pm or so, with a break in between for a bit of shopping at Parco. You sure you were there?

Oh don’t worry, I don’t ride on a broomstick although I’m pretty unerring if I do decide to kick some butts, metaphorically or literally, hehe. I’m actually quite a ‘nice’ person.

Anyway, jokes aside, I’ll look forward to meeting you, perhaps at the D n D?

    Welcome to the club.

  37. Hi Terence

The name change proposal is not an issue with me – just wanted to contribute to a fun debate by taking a stand.

    JassmineT

  38. Hi KT @ #2

I was pleasantly surprised to see the names I suggested off-hand listed as candidates. Do remove them and replace with one carefully coined one that is akan datang.

Now I know why you suggested “Sunset Hobo Coven”. You are after blood. Not afraid you might be the winner and the one hung upside down?

I think “Silver Hedge Club” interesting. There are many things in life to hedge against as one ages. (Be prepared to hang, KT!)

    JassmineT

  39. Hi KT, Jonathan and everybody,

As you know, I love deliberations on new ideas. As long as we keep outside the taboos, I have no objection to discuss this subject of a name change.

However, I ask everybody to view the discussion and suggestion of a name change with open minds, while respecting other SHCians opinion. So, continue with giving your suggestions. This is everybody’s right to speak on this forum. At this stage, I would not ask for a vote at a monthly gathering, and definitely not within the foreseable future. But, for those who feel strongly the name should be changed asap, please raise your hands. I am sure you can find a solution.

    Have fun. Terence Seah

  40. Hi Mary@6,

“I think it’s rather audacious and impertinent for someone to join a club and then tell the club to change its name simply because he/she doesn’t like it.”

Terence has always been very open about Silver Hairs suggesting new ideas for discussion as long as it did not violate any of SHC’s rules.

I was one of the first few who started wondering out loud if it was a good time for a name change and voiced it here. Never did I think it would create such an uproar for SHCians.

In no way did I say that I did not like the name nor demand Terence to change his baby’s name etc. Please do not take it as an act of impertinence or audacity.

I have already met & made quite a few friends already, and would also like to meet you soon too (probably missed you at Bali Lan yesterday). Hopefully, you will return my handshake & not a broomstick ;-)

Anyway for the record, I am glad to be a Silver Hair or Silver Buddy or Silver Kaki etc

    best rgds
    Jonathan

  41. Well said, Jane and Mary and quite boldly.

A major decision should have ample time, deliberation and excellent reasons.

To move/remove a solid foundation is never wise just to please a “fancy” or a passing fad.

  42. Hi Terence,

btw, I disagree using monthly meeting to vote and decide a new name for SHC ….is not appropriate

To me changing name is a big thing…should give amper time for all SCHians to vote and comment

If it is just bcos of a small number of ppl vote to change a new name…I will feel sad about it…

    Jane

  43. KT Wong,
Please remove my suggestion of ‘Senior Haven’s Club’ I mentioned it in jest and didn’t realise you would put it up for a vote.
    Thank you.
As far as I’m concerned, it’s SILVER HAIRS CLUB for me.

  44. Susan Chan,
I agree with you. It was “a name that has attracted everyone to sign-in as members, and whose membership is still growing!” How aptly put.

Changing the name of SHC is akin to someone wanting to change his given name, a name given to him by his loving parents. For what reason? Simply because SOME people don’t like it?

If these people didn’t like the name ‘Silver Hairs Club’, why did they sign up to become members then?

I think it’s rather audacious and impertinent for someone to join a club and then tell the club to change its name simply because he/she doesn’t like it.

Btw, would that someone care to stand up and show us who he/she is? Would he/she mind if I were to say that I didn’t like his/her name and would like him/her to change it to something that I like????

  45. Joy @ #3

    …letter H is pronounced as “age”…

Now you tell me. I am in the wrong place. First time, I thought it sounded more like “hedge” That’s what started us talking about retirement funding and hedging.

I told my group of lifestyle traders to join a really cool club – SilverHedge Club.

I don’t know about SHC. I am thinking of changing my identity to avoid irate stakeholders.

They should hang those Pr One teachers on the same tree. And all those who can’t tell the difference between a “bid” and a “ask”.

  46. Hi KT,

After my 1st visit to the monthly gathering last nite, I must comment that I’ve met all wonderful SHCians, who are all so bubbly and full of exuberance!

I would like to share my opinion that perhaps we should retain #4, Silverhairsclub, a name that has attracted everyone to sign-in as members, and whose membership is still growing!

    Cheers!
    Sue

  47. Silver is commonly used to describe the not so young. So, Silver is appropriate. And it sounds nicer than Senior. And definitely nicer than Senile.

Why do we want to portray that we are sexy, hot and chic? Are these the traits we all strive to achieve as members?

The Hare is already breeding. There are two listed above.

I like Silver Hair Club (Hair not Hairs). But SilverHairs Club is fine too. Let’s not split hairs over one letter.

By the way, the letter H is pronounced as “age”. It is commonly mispronounced and is jarring to the ears. Blame the kindergarten and primary one teachers.

  48. Fast forward. Next month’s SHC meet. You have one month to put up the dream name.

After tomorrow’s prize, the queue will be longer than the Toto booth.

Something different. We will honour the author of the new name. At the large tree, outside Scorebot. We will all congregate under the tree.

Depends on male or female. Ter will hang the female by the neck. Males the other end. No. Not the feet. Somewhere in the middle.

    Hee-hee.

  49. Hi Wong KT,

How do we vote for the ist. 5 SHC names and the name that appears the most no of times will be the final chosen name agreed upon by all SHC members.

On line in this forum or come down to Score bots to put in our votes in the ballot box.

    Election fever. Ha! ha!
