Our Dec monthly gathering is now fixed as follows:

  • Date:  Wed 17 Dec 2008.
  • Time:  1700 – 2130 hrs
  • Place:  Hans Cafe at Great Eastern Building, Pickering Street.
  • Topic:  Nil.  Free and easy, and get to know one another.
  • After 2200 hrs, can go somewhere to enjoy the year-end festivities.

Here is a little exercise for you to know other fellow SHCians, especially the new ones.

1. Identify your serial number on this participants list.  Let’s say it is 4 for Terence Seah.

2. Add a fix number 5 to your 4. This is 9. Make 9 your friend for this evening.

3. Add the fix number 5 to your 9. Make 14 your friend for this evening.

4. Add the fix number 5 to your 14. Make 19 your friend for this evening.

5. Continue until the total participation list is exhausted.

The aim of this exercise is for you to find out what are the interests or hobbies of all the members in your group.  The exercise starts anytime, from the time you arrive. Appoint one person in your group to submit the names and hobbies of all members in your group. A SHC T-shirt will be given to all members of one lucky group. Submission of name list by 9pm.

  4. Hello Terence and the committee for the Nov month SHC gathering,

    Thank you for organising the social gathering for Shcs and the Sarong Kebaya fashion show. I enjoyed myself very much and am sure others did too. The venue was perfect, so spacious and with lots of privacy after 7pm when the students left the cafeteria.Location was central as well.

    I want to be @ the 17th Dec 08’s gathering and hopely many more to come.

    I will like to come for the meet.

    And Caroline: If you can spare some copies, even older ones, I have a disabled friend that I can give the copies to.

    As you all may have read, I came back with Helen Wong from Chiang Mai yesterday. The rest of the team will be back by Thursday or Friday this week; all having secured flights via Phuket or KL. Let’s continue to pray for a safe return for them.

  30. Lin Chuah has a suggestion which she feels will maximize the Christmas spirit in all of us. She suggests that if you have a Santa Claus hat, bring it along. Even putting on a pot-belly Santa suit would be great fun. I leave all of you to figure out how to look like a Christmas tree.

    Over the years, some of you must have picked up experience in organising icebreakers. Not necessarily crazy ones. Those that get us to move our butts out of the chairs we are sitting on. In groups of 10s would be ideal. Please raise your hand. Dont be shy, this is the year-end festive season, so let down your SilverHairs, and get to know more friends.

    For those who are coming, please write here what are your interests, hobbies or travel plans, so that others will know more about you. Have fun on the 17 Dec.

  42. Sengh, I am no mathematician but based on a multiple of 5, there will be only 5 groups. At the present count of 53 (and the counting hasnt stopped), each group is a sizeable 10 (and still counting). There wont be one table at which seats so many. Hopefully while tables are moved and joined, no table is turned and to their original positions the table will be returned after the gathring is over.

    For Hans to oblige SHCians, it’s fair that folks will not just say hello to the Hans staff but buy them drinks too…………

    Is the “fixed number 5” unchangeable?

    What about those further down the list, for e.g. John Howe at 49? He will have only one ‘friend’ to find.
    I’m at 32, so I have 37, 42, 47,52, only 4 ‘friends’ to look for to form my group?

    Please tell me if I’m wrong. Thanks.

    With this exercise taking place @ Han’s, you can really expect a commotion it can create, huh…anyway, its fun for a change though!

    I thought of this game during my recent Batam trip. I am glad Tim can also count. As for John Howe, dont worry, he will still be part of a group, if he works backwards.

    Well, the number of persons is in the group will change, as we get close to 17 Dec. Keep thinking and cracking the brains.

  48. Mary-C, practically, it’s only the first 5 names who will go looking for the chicks to fill up his coop……..the others starting from number 6 need to only to idle around and wait to be roped in.

  50. Terence, the plot thickens, as they say, haha.

    How will John Howe (No pun intended) “add” 5 and “work backwards” I wonder? Unless he uses a negative 5?

    What happens when someone ‘finds’ me and puts me in his or her group and I have my own group too? This will happen when #2, #7, #12, #17, #22 and #27 form his or her group, if the “add 5” applies. Which group do I belong to then??

    That’s why I asked if the “fixed number 5” is unchangeable. Even if it were, I will still end up in someone else’s group right?

    Then there’s the other factor of arrival time. The earlier arrivals will have an edge over the later ones don’t you think?

    I responded your invitation on 13 Dec. under ref. No. 60 confirming my interest in attending the social event but noticed my name has not been included in the registration list. Please clarify.

    One other matter, I perceived the forthcoming gathering is for one session only (1700-2130). Any reason for skipping the earlier session (1500-1700), originally planned mainly for retirees and senior citizens! Kindly enlighten. Thanks

  71. When you come for the monthly gathering tomorrow, please remember to take a sticky label, write your name on it, and paste the label on your blouse/shirt.

    Some members persistently fail to register their coming to the monthly gathering. Please make it a point to register if you are coming tomorrow.

  89. Tonight’s monthly gathering at Hans Cafe was absolutely fun. Hans Cafe was very good to us, and they have made it pretty private for us, by placing a reserved sign on each table. To add cheer to the Christmas spirit, Thomas Loh brought along packs of Santa claus hats, masks and fun goodies.

    I think it was Shirleen Kao who printed song sheets. Trying to figure out when to start singing, different corners started to sing the prepared songs. Obviously, in one of the most disorganised events, different tables were singing the same song, something like AM radio. It was good fun.

    Hans has a large dining area, and we must have catapulted balloons and crackers all over the place. Maybe one day, we would fire red crackers here.

    Thanks to all the more senior members, who helped to guide the newer ones feel at home. And to those who could not make it tonight, well, there is always the next time.

    Nice to meet some of you at yesterday’s gathering at
    Han’s Cafe, Gt Eastern Life Bldg. Regret I had to run
    off by 6.30pm for work. Thanks Patrick for loaning your
    PC and Steven for instructing me how to get into SHC’s
    website. Perhaps Terence would know that this is my first
    successful attempt.
