Hello, My name is Linda Loh. I am 45 years old and I live at Shelley, Perth, WA. I have been here since September 2008 and would like to continue with a healthy lifestyle of keeping fit like breeze walking or jogging. I am looking to meet more people and build up friendship who can share similar interests with me eg. cooking new dishes, chit chatting about what's happening back home, jogging by the Canning River at Rossmoyne/Shelley in the evenings. Thank you.

  1. Hi Linda,

Welcome t SHC and to Perth. Our interests are similar. You can join us (3 ex-Singaporean couples) for Mundijong animal auction market every 1st & 3rd Wed – that’s tomorrow morning – we have a stall there selling our pre-loved items. Thursday morning we are going to Fremantle to fish for sotong and herring, please email marytan@iinet.net.au if you are keen to join us. Also we get together to make noodles and other hawker favourites like mee-siam, lotong, laksa, etc. I am staying at Aubin Grove (10-15 mins from Shelley).

  2. Hi Linda

I am Sophia Lim member from http://www.silverhairsclub.com in Singapore. I understand you like recipes do have a look at my website.

Welcome to my website http://www.specialasianfood.com which is offering FREE PDF Chinese Cuisines Snacks and One-dish Meal cookbook when you purchase The Oriental Cookbook ISBN:981-04-7529-2 printed version.

You can cook yourself a nice meal as my book is very easy to follow. Just get the ingredients, seasonings and follow the methods. On the page you will see photo to illustrate the dish. You can also see samples of recipes on top of the website under The Oriental Cokbook Recipes. After you have printed the pages from the PDF cookbook on A size copy paper or photo paper bring them to the stationery shop and bind the pages with plastic cover and a spiral spine. 3. Hi all you down there,

Mary, we were supposed to have met a year ago when you were looking for a room and car in Singapore? And also on you recent trip here to Singapore but I guess your visit here was rather short.

Seems you all there are starting a new community of SHC members and activites too. Goood, keep it up, Terence may now have to widen his SHC monthly meetings there too and some of us can join him when he does that ???

Can I ask if it is possible to go down there for a couple of months to do some part time work for food/lodging and maybe just some pocket money? I am game to do any kind of work from helping to harvest grapes, or help in building a shed, some minor renovation work in the house etc, have good electrical and some simple housebuilding experience.

Alternatively is it possible to do some volunteer work around where you all are? Lastly, how much will a rented room cost for a month or two?

I enjoy travelling but prefer staying longer than a normal tour that is why I am asking for such arrangements. I have done such a stint near Phuket, Khao Lak for a couple of months so prefer such travel arrangements. Incidentally it can be anywhere too , NZ or Europe if there is any such opportunities for a hired hand ??.

    Cheers

  4. Hi Linda, Mary and Ronald

Linda, welcome to Perth! Hope to meet up one day. My email is joanwong2002@hotmail.com

I have yet to meet Mary though we are quite close by. I must join you one day to go fishing at Fremantle, especially to catch sotong. Not this week as I will be going up to Busselton to visit a sick friend, and do a spot of fishing and golfing.

Ronald, if you are still looking for accomodation, let me know. Perhaps explore the idea of selling used items like what Mary and friends are doing. I’ve tried it.It’s fun and you don’t need permits etc. You can bring down stuff that may interest locals here. These Flea markets operate every Sunday and at other days. I’ve not heard of the Wed market that Mary mentioned.

    Regards
    Joan

  5. “Ronald, if you are still looking for accomodation, let me know. Perhaps explore the idea of selling used items like what Mary and friends are doing……………….”.

That makes Ron out to be quite homeless, hehe.

And, to find an accommodation, Mary & friends are selling used items………………………..I’ll pay top money for her bolster, not just the used but also unwashed one.

Looking for accomodation, let you know. Now, if looking for an accommodating playmate, let who know leh?

  6. Hi Ronald #2

We can meet when I balek kampong in Mar 09.

Plan your trip to Perth for autumn, it’s cool & beautiful.

You can get accomodation in exchange for your hands-on experience like gardening & other small jobs around the house for a couple of months or more. I will get more details for you.

If you join WWOOF at wwoof@wwoof.com.au, you can get food & accomodation – this is called the ‘Good Life’ I am quite keen on WWOOFing – there are 1500 properties throughout Australia offering WWOOFing.

Like Joan mentioned, you can also rent a room or house – price depends on what you need e.g. meals included. I will email some details to you.

    Hi Joan #3
Have a safe trip to Busselton – you can get squids at that longest jetty in the world. Hope your friend get better. This morning I met a Sporean lady selling live giant rabbits at the Mundijong market! She stays in Bunbury & she drove almost 3 hours to get to the market.

    Hi Tim #4
How are you? sorry mate, we dont use bolster here.

    G’day
    Mary Lee (Perth)

  7. Hi Mary, Joan, Sophia,

Thank you for the warm welcome. Yes, I will keep in touch and participate in some of the activities later. At the moment, pretty busy with cleaning and gardening work for the house inspection next week (I am renting).

Sophia, definitely I will try out your recipes. Mary, cooking mee siam, sotong and laksa sounds very good to me. Hope to be able to join in soon.

    Cheers,
    Linda

  8. Yes Linda, I will cook your favourite Asian dish when you & family come over to my place next week. Hope Joan can join us if she’s back from Busselton.

    Mary Lee (Perth)

  9. Hi Joan, Mary, and Linda, Howdy the summer coming along.

Linda, welcome to the club, and yes it will be good if you all can start your own activities there. Only hope some of us can join you all there sometime.

Joan – ok will lookout for what accommodation you can find. About selling used items, hymm ‘yes’ most of what I have are used items, also old as me too. Maybe it is better to bring customes jewellery from Bkk with a different theme???
Mary – ok either meet you in Mar 09, or earlier if I have a chance to go to Perth if there is any WOFFing opportunity or something like that.
Meanwhile there are many other activities we can all enjoy here too, like sharing Sophia’s recipe or maybe also helping to promote her books in Australia. Sophia was talking to me, and with her talent and experience in cooking ‘Nyonya food’ maybe she can start a local series in school to conduct ‘If Yan CAn so Can Sophia on Perankan ‘ or something like that.
Good day, mates ( is it alright to use mates for ladies too?)
    Cheers

  10. Hi Mary, Linda, Ronald and All

Mary, I’m back in Perth. Didn’t catch much – just 5 yellow tails. Need to learn more fishing techniques. Let me know when you are having a gettogether certainly would like to meet up – like the idea of fishing, Mundijong market etc. It’s true, we live close by tho I haven’t explored your place at Aubin Grove.

Except for Tues and Thurs, I’m free on the weekdays. You can email me or call me.

Ronald, re: accomodation, I’m not sure if you are keen on staying at backpackers/hostel. I think you can get a place to stay for like $25/night. It will be in the city area which then allows you to move easily. The important thing is you need to know what you want to do in Perth. The idea of selling things at markets will work – things small enough to carry over like CDs, jewellery, maybe watches, mobile phones – all old etc

Perhaps together with Mary also going to S’pore, we can meet up and share some ideas. I will be there in Apr – May. Meanwhile continue to explore possibilities.

    Cheers
    Joan

  11. Hi Ronald #9,
This week is cool & breezy – good to be outdoors. If it’s too hot, the flies get too friendly. There may be a chance for you to WWOOF (free accommodation) in April – will get details for you.

    Hi Joan,
Yeah, please come by Aubin Grove – fresh eggs from Anketell and now fresh garlic in season from nearby farms. This morning, we went with Sporean couple to Maida Vale – bought longan, custard apple and kafir lime trees. Planning to go to Carmel this week to buy macadamia nuts & other farm produce – keen to join us? If no showers on Fri morning, then we go Coogee jetty for yellow tail and herring – will call you. Next Wed is Mundijong markets at Roman Road.

    G’day
    Mary

  12. Hi Joan, Mary and all you down there.

You are making feel like going there sooner than I have plan. I am game for almost anything, WWOOFing, backpacking, golfing, etc.

I have been to New Castle in 1983 and was there for 3 months and had the chance to really meet and know some frienldy Australian family and friends. Going hiking, fishing, garage sale, flea markets etc was just something fun to do especially with the local friends.

I have also been to Adelaide last year for about 8 days and I dont find it that interesting if you just go there for a tour, that is why I prefer the WWoofing, backping, etc.

Now is to see if I can find someone else who have the time and wanting to travel the way I do. But when I am ready may just travel alone as I have often done before.

    Cheers

  13. Hi Ronald,
Wanna join us to Manjimup for cherries in Dec, then to Esperance in late Jan. In between we can track Darling Range & experience true blue Oz wildlife.

  14. Hi Linda (Perth),

Very nice to have you as one of our contacts in Australia. May I ask why did you move to Perth? Am still trying to find out why Perth is attractive and how it can be attractive to Singaporeans who are planning to spend short periods of their retirement there?

Good to have your view, as you indicated you have just been there for 3-4 months.

    Terence Seah

  15. Hi Marylee,

Thanks for the offer, will have to decide where/when to start.
Right now have to settle quite a few issues before I start backpacking. I should think after the CNY will be a good time, but if there is any special offers on any short trip will defintely consider going.

Just received an email to day from AirAsia to book for travel to London from Mar to Oct 2009 for only $800 inclusive of taxes return ticket. So right now trying to decide which way to go first.

    Cheers

  16. Hi Terence,

This is Linda in Perth. Have been having problem logging in. Will send you email separately soon.

Now in response to your question of “Why Perth”. Well, I guess this is rather subjective. All depends on what one wants in life and priorities. For us, it is more for a slower pace of life and also opportunity to spend more time with our children as they move to tertiary education. Having lived in Malaysia, Auckland, Sydney and then Singapore, Perth seems to be something in between and the close proximity to Asia makes it even more appealing as we still want keep in touch with our relative.

Having been here for a few months now, I am learning to appreciate the nature even more.

  17. Hi Mary #11

Missed your comment as I didn’t open into the website these few days. Must do so nowadays. Wed and Fri are my free days. Anything on Wed 10 Dec? I’m free to meet up and if so, is it OK to bring along a friend whom I met here. She’s an ex-Malaysian, from Ipoh and is settled here. She’s also keen to try her hand at fishing. Coogee jetty is nearby to us. I usually go to Woodman Point but not of late.

    Cheers
    Joan

  18. Hi Joan,

Sure can bring your friend, hope to get 30 yellow tails at Woodman Point – for keropok & loh mee. Will check tide & weather for 10 Dec. I am meeting Linda this Sunday – want to join us?

    Mary

  19. Hi Mary,

Yes $800 return to London is a good deal. Thanks also for the info on Jetstar offers and about volunteer work in nature conservation.

Am taking my time to consider where, what and when to start, as I am also in the middle of other things too.
But it is really good to hear alot of comments and activities about Perth from all of you there.

I hope Terence can get the IT guy to get the direct reply feature to a post working again as I think many may not find it easy to reply to a post with the hassle of having to jump from one screen to another.
By the way how do you find the drop of the A$ affecting you in any way?
    Cheers

  20. Hi Mary and Linda

No, not this Sunday as I will be attending a wedding.Let me know if you have checked on tide for fishing on 10 Dec. I will also let my friend, Patricia know. Can meet you at Woodman Point if it’s confirmed.

    Cheers
    Joan

  21. Hi Joan, we will be there by 7a.m or earlier. You & Patricia can come anytime. If no catch, we will move to Fremantle – South mole or last carpark after Kailis on Mews Rd. See u there. Will call you if any change of plans.

    God bless
    Mary

  22. HI Ronald,

It is good to take your time – no rush no stress.

Drop in A$ means good demand for WA home products e.g more orders for my emu oil. Also good timing to TT S$ to purchase your dream farm or cottage. Drop in petrol prices means time to pack & go on the road. Things are more expensive here (as well as in Spore), but lifestyle here is more self-sustainable – with our DIY and recycling culture.

    G’day.

  23. Hi Joan,

See you at the jetty. My friends caught some mackerel, yellow tail and bony herring last Sunday.

This Saturday, I am meeting Linda at Kalamunda market and having lunch in the hills. Want to join us?

    Mary

  24. Mary (Perth), Joan (Perth), Linda (Perth),

Fishing is Perth. That’s what I see as a favourite hobby for Singaporeans living in Perth. Together with a nice cool or cold weather, and guaranteed fish, I have always marvelled at how enticing this hobby is, especially for the family. AFter the catch, you get to bbq or grill them.

Deep see fishing or pond fishing in Singapore is also nice; but the mosquitoes and the humidity do turn us off. Mary, please send Oi Cheng many pictures of your fishing adventures. Try tempting us. We might just come over next year. Better still, some of us love to be tempted to stay for 3 months.

    Terence Seah

  25. Terence#26

Yes, I will be interested to travel to Perth next year. Feb/March too hot, if trip its in April/May 09 please keep me in the loop.

    cheers

  26. Terence #26,

Each season in Perth has its beauty and activity. Ideally come for 10 days. Perth is flanked by ocean on one side and the hills of the darling range on the other. Along the ocean front, you can walk, cycle & fish or just sit back & listen to the waves. At the hills, you can pick fruits, buy fresh garlic & honey home & try traditional Aussie food at the farms, try bush walks & meet unique native animals, sell your wares & chat with locals at the markets or just sit back & smell the flowers…this is the good life…we call this tummydrummy.

Yeah, I will send some pictures to Oi Cheng soon.

    Fredalim #27,
Looking forward to see you in Perth.

  27. Hi Mary,

Does Perth have a off-peak period, when it is quite easy to get non-peak rates. Say temperatures below 22C. I guess a large house, say two weeks might be a good fun and economical solution to a large crazy group. Is renting a large house, for say 8 – 12 people fun and economical? Then, a few rented self-drive might be the only way to move around.

We could split into groups to occupy the few rooms in the house, and fly in and out on different schedule. Am thinking of bring my wife and son to Perth again, plus with some crazy SilverHairs who thinks the wide open airaconditioning in Perth is the next best thing to fresh air.

Also, it would be great if all our Perth contacts are around too. Take your time to answer. I get hungry for ideas when I cannot get into Bangkok airport to see my family.

    Terence Seah

  28. G’morning Marylee(Perth). You’re having the Good Life there Downunder in Perth. I remember so well the last trip my family & I had there a couple of years ago. The weather was gorgeous. We stayed in a downtown hotel.Had the best Fish&Chips dinner here.(Another one of my favorites-the Hi-Tea cottages, serving very British-style Scones with Clopped Cream & lushious strawberries). We rented a car, picked up some guide books/brochures and off we went exploring. The TreeWalk was fantastic – the view from up there spectacular. There was a sort of “nursery” where orphaned joeys were being looked after – the ranger allowed my son to cradle one really tiny one. The Australian colorful Budgie birds are everywhere; they even pecked seeds from our out-stretched hands. We also visited an area where there were miles of BlackBoys (a kind of aboriginal tree-stumps?). Near here we visited a huge horse-riding ranch. On the way back to Perth, we stayed in a cute Bed&Breakfast in Singleton, right by the ocean. Then before boarding the plane, we had to visit Burswood Casino (is it still S’pore-owned?). It was a short trip – but a really good TummyDrummy one!
My next trip to WA will be a longer one – I want to re-visit the very remote Monkey-Mia (no, there are NO monkeys here!). There’s a marine-life centre there that look after dolphins “living” in that area. Visitors could feed fish to these ‘tame’ dophins. These friendly dolphins came so close to shore that we even swam with them. It was an exhilirating experience.

  29. Hi Terence,

2009 off-peak period below 22C will be autumn through winter: between 28 Apr-3 Jul or 20 Jul to 25 Sep.

For free & easy, you can rent a 3/4-bedroom self-contained house or rent rooms from our local contacts or stay at the caravan park. Petrol is cheaper now & car rental starts at $20 a day for a small car.

    Enjoy your Batam adventure.

    Mary Lee

  30. Hi Florence,

Great to hear from you. Yeah, the traditional fish & chips and scones here are very yummy. The Tree Top Walk at the Valley of the Giants between Wadpole and Denmark is magical – did your whole family squeeze into the tree trunk? Birds & ducks here are very friendly to people. The blackboy is known as grass-tree which is a favoured native plant (from $50) in our frontyard.

Next time you come to Perth, drive north to Geraldton, Kalbarri (SHC Catherine Ho & my family went there early June), then Monkey Mia, Carnavon and Exmouth for its breathtaking canyons and the Ningaloo Marine Park.

Sharing this with you brings back good memories.

    Mary Lee

  31. Hi Mary, Terence and All

Mary, my friend, patricia is too tired from working to turn up on Wed. I will come with my hubby if it’s OK. He also needs to learn from you.

Had been a bit busy this week as the golf season ends and we have the end of year lunches, etc. Also two visitors from Singapore at my place – trackd me through SHC website. Looks like SHC is really reaching out to many people. Thanks to Terence. Keep up the good work Terence!

I was just looking at holiday rentals in WA and yes, it’s possible to rent self-contained chalets for even up to 10 people at reasonable rates eg around $20 per person per night. A place can be Margaret River which allows one to access wineries, eateries, craft shops, golfing, fishing, walking trails etc. I think if one can get hold of bicycles, the problem if petrol savings and exercise will be solved. Food can be inexpensive if kept simple and home-prepared.

Really great if more come and yes, if possible for us all to meet and join in. I will if around.

    Cheers
    Joan

  32. Hi Joan,

Sure your hubby can come. Pai-seh I am not good at fishing…it’s a combination of luck, skills and timing. Stephen & I look forward to meeting you & your hubby. Linda may join us after sending her son to school. I will bring home-made curry puffs. Hope no early showers on Wed.

This weekend, we plan to drive south for Munjimump’s cherry festival and will stay in a self-contained unit at the caravan park.

Sometime next week, I will bring a Spore friend to pick oranges & buy macadamia nuts & honey-comb from a farm at Carmel (near Welshpool). You & hubby want to join us?

    Mary

  33. Hi Mary
We’ll be at Woodman Point possibly around 8.30 or so. See you all.

Manjimup’s a bit far, maybe will join you for the Carmel farm, depending on day etc.

    Joan

  34. Hi Joan,

Prepared some burly and beef mince & couple of prawns for bait. Looking forward to meeting & fishing with you and your hubby.

    Mary
