Ho Chi Minh City, Free & Easy, Thur 24 – 27 Nov 2016

A few of us have been toying with the idea of going to Ho Chi Minh City, free & easy.  In particular, SS James, Andrew and myself.

HCMC has many exciting attractions. The food is varied; especially street food. Beef noodles are every where. It’s most famous market is the Banh Tanh market.  The cars and motorcycles just don’t seem to hit you, even if you were to cross a 3-lane road blindfolded. Beer is about one dollar a bottle.

For those in the know, HCMC is famous for its cafe.  The ladies are somehow always slim, 28 inch waist.  With Grab bike, one can travel inside narrow lanes and markets.  And the day starts early for the Vietnamese.  And ends late too.

End Nov is cooler, and the weather likely to stay dry.

We can all meet in HCMC. We can have our own mini flexible itinery.  A private massage.  The dates have not been decided but it does not matter. We meet there.

For those who have been there, please recommend the hotel you have stayed before. Maybe near the famous market or Riverside.

Interested, let us know. I think it will be fun.  You can bring anybody along.

  3. Hi Terrence – First and foremost Thank You for setting up this “no fee membership”

I will be in Siem Reap 6-10 December 2016 and can do a stop over 11 December 2016 at HCMC to “cross path” if this trip materialised in December 2016. But I need early notice because I need to inform our travel agent to add this sector for me.

Bdw, what happen to the Europe Rail trip? Any plans……I am schedule to be in Edinburgh June 2017……and wish to hop over to nearby country if I can find a room mate……..

once again thanks for keeping SHC alive….

    Cheers
    Freda

    1. Hi Freda,

It is unlikely the dates will be 11 DEC to mid DEC.

As you have been to HCMC, do you know of any street food in HCMC where there are many stalls with clean food.

Oct trip to Europe is on, during 2nd half of Oct. I guess I will be too occupied.

Keep up your support in SHC.

  4. This stall think is around Ben Thanh market. Those with weak stomach its good to be “watchful” when wanting to eat at roadside stalls……Bdw, remember to tour by Bike! so you guys can be chauffeured around by Ladies Captain hahahhaha – Have a great trip.

  5. In HCMC stay in Dong Khoi or Pham Ngu Lao area. Dance halls fill with ballroom dancers in dancing gears can waft home on motorbikes. Stay 2 nights in Mui Ne, beach resorts so stay along the beach & not across the road. Mui Ne is famous for its enormous red and white sand dunes.

  6. Thank you Daisy, Freda and Jimmy,
We will use your recommendations. Sounds the VN food is just fantastic. I also like the recommendations where there are plenty of dance venues. Altho i am no dancer, I will go too.

So far, confirmations are Terence, SS James, AndrewK and Sam Huat.

The dates are set for Thur 24 Nov and back Sun 27 Nov 2016. You may join earlier and return later. but we will be there 24-27 Nov.

Weather is expected to be dry and cool, with cold airs coming from China. Expect to travel by metered taxis and motorcycle taxis too. Expect VN food, street food, exotic food, shopping, massage, karaoke and scenic views. HCMC is a modern city with all the entertainment you can think of. And if you love beer, there is Saigon beer and 555.

Please indicate your interest. Guys are encouraged to join this fun Free & Easy trip. Ladies are encouraged to come join the guys if you are adventurous, game and easy going.

      1. Hi mega, the group will be happy to have your presence. We shall enjoy ourselves. Let’s look out for dancing and singing joints in Ho Chi Minh city. It will be fun.

  10. Heehee…four or five “batangs” or is it “so tings” going to HCM?!

I’ve misplaced my maps and guidebooks for Vietnam…so can only recall from memory from my last trip last year…

HCMC is vastly different from 5 – 10 years ago; there are many more cars, so crossing the road is no longer the same. In the city centre use the traffic lights to cross; outside the main centre cross very carefully as you may get mowed down by an SUV!

Yes stay at the government-run hotels in Dong Khoi or Pham Ngu Lao area…or the international chain hotels.

Only take the Vinasun metered taxis … you have been warned! There are even fake taxis in HCMC!

Good, reasonable food can be found everywhere: street stalls, cafes, restaurants, around Binh Thanh market there are night seafood stalls, Chinatown…
Oh yes, there are French restaurants too! I’ve tried the small bistro-style places around Dong Khoi area.
And don’t forget the ice cream and shakes… Kem Bach Dang is a five-storey ice cream palace you should visit!

You can arrange a Mekong delta tour with the hotel or the govt-run travel service, watch a water puppet show or take a river dinner cruise in your free time. I would rather not visit the Vietcong tunnels or the Vietnam Hilton museum with their grisly exhibits!

    Enjoy HCMC!

  11. Hi Terence,
Since no more with Le danz, had plently of spare time dancing away four times a week. Think I will take a break and join you guys for the 24th to 27th Nov for the HCMC. trip.
Could you assist in the best flight to go on 24th Nov.
Also like to have a look at the big Dance ballroom.
Been there twice but had never visit the dance floor as Hotel staff used to say there is none?
Only been to the River tour and city tour.
    Thanks!

    Jeffrey Gan

  12. We have 6 guys joining this free and easy HCMC trip

Please note we close on 7 Nov. After this day, you can still join but u have to book your own hotel.

Free and easy. Means we sleep every night, wake up have breakfast and decide what to do. No plans except to eat, sleep and enjoy Vietnam culture.

  13. First day in HCMC, after dinner, we decided to go to a night club. Finally, we settled at Maxims Club. Excellent music and band plus a number of dancing girls.

We had wine to keep our selves sober. It was an enjoyable night.

    Terence Seah

  14. Although I dont dance, the girls were good, better than Terence. But they did not meet the standards of Jeff, SS and Mega. Music was memorable.

  15. Terence
You said in several occasions that you can’t dance.
Here three other guys were seen enjoying themselves with
the local attractive gals. Don’t you want to pick up a few steps in
simple social dances and dabble with the partners when occasions arise. Who knows you may begin to like it. Of course the choice is entirely yours.
In the meantime enjoy your stay in HCMC
    Robert

  16. Vietnamese beef noodles. Was what we were looking for. But we thought Japanese food in ho chi Minh city would be something worth trying. We settled at Sushi Teh.

The park is something of an adventure. We gotbto dance with Vietnamese girls at the park.

  17. Our group had an objective, and this is to enjoy ourselves in HobChi Minh City. We tried dancing Clubs, from district 1 to 5. But the best place where we felt we had fun and pleasure was the Park, near our hotel
This was dancing in the open, among tall shady trees, friendly Vietnamese men and ladies. They were great dancers as I understand from James, Mega and Jeff.

Sad, we wish we would have spend more nights on this wonderful stay, but all good things must come to an end.
