2nd trip to Padang and Bukit Tinggi in West Sumatra

After the 1st trip to Padang and Bukit Tinggi, I received many feedback from SHC members that they missed the 1st trip and those who want to go again. I understand the feeling of missing the boat and curiosity of finding out " what’s is so special" about that place.

Personally I enjoyed myself with the grounp of nice people, great food and unique scenery despite of the hassles, unwarranted matters pop up during the trip.

I suggest to have the 2nd trip on 1-4 August. It will be 4 days 3 nights.

Hopefully we will have enough time to eat more lobsters, big crabs, prawn and fish, avocado juice and authentic nasi Padang.

This time we must have our Indonesian massage not in a rush but really relax and fun. After all it is very cheap.

We should do what the local do in Padang and Bukit Tinggi; roaming in the wet market, see things you never see in Singapore, take a ride on the horse carriage, talk to local folks, listen to the pounding waves, breathe slowing the cool crisp air.

The angmoh from Australia know West Sumatra province has a hugh wave playing ground and they just come all the way to surf. Unbelievable. Actually West Sumatra is resource rich. It has large deposits of coal, copper, lead and zinc, cement, timber(in the past), gold and silver.

Lobsters are abundant and that is why we get to enjoy our cheap juicy lobsters. This time we must bring wasabi and we make lobster sushi ourself. I was told live bamboo lobster is the best lobster sushi.

West Sumatra produces the most bird’s nest in the world. Unfortunately not many people know and the bird’s nest caves are heavily protected. Part of Brand’s bottle bird’s nest come from West Sumatra.

Tiger Airways is still having zero fares to Padang and I think 1-4 August may be a good time.

  1. Hi Weng Chin

We met at the last gathering and thanks for putting up this post so soon for interested party like us. :)

Ah Nee & I missed your boat & fun the last time. I guess Nor too. So, can you tentatively put us up for this trip. I would need to dicuss with them cos we are going somewhere in July. Then now come Aug 1-4 which seems so soon leh. Also, can the dates coincide around the long weekend ie : National Day?? so we dont have to take so many days? Just thinking aloud.

    Thanks,
    Suzhang

  2. Hi Weng Chin,

I too missed the 1st trip on the last weekend of May and
concur with Suzhang that the long weekends of the National
    Day would be more ideal.

How about 7-11 Aug or 6-10 Aug?

    james

  3. Hi Chin,

Thank you for organising this 2nd trip to Padang. I am waiting patiently for this trip, yes I am going. Nor & Suzhang, Monday go back office hor, remember to apply leave first thing in the morning huh, “kiasu” lah, if not other colleagues “chop” then “susah” lah. Don’t care so much about working already…..so much work to do, have been working like a mad woman in office for the last 2 weeks, cannot breath leh ??? its time to take a break. Lina, you join us also lah….get to eat Durians, Avocados, Lobsters, Crabs, Prawns……wow! Bird Nest, this is the BEST!

    Ah Nee

  4. #4 Ah Nee, you know smthg, I haven’t got a chance to apply for my July’s trip. Now got to go back on Monday for both July & Aug huh? Ok, but let’s wait & see what’s the firm date from Weng Chin lah.

Lina, no need to think lah…come & join us. We can have Avocados shake & lobsters everyday, as well as cheap massage. You missed the avocados shake in Chiangmai, don’t you? By the way, no bird’s nest to eat cos you’ll need to climb up cliffs/caves to harvest them. Better to look for gold & silver..ha.ha.. Oh, I will ensure you have your bolsters with you and Ah Nee’s milo with her. :)

  5. Some of SHC members have events during the National Day so I decided that 1-4 Aug is the appropriate date. It is not too soon for those who have gone 1st time and not too late before Muslim Fasting month(massage and spa centres close for one month).

Tiger flies on Tue, Thur and Sat to Padang. In order to have 4D3N, we will fly on Sat and return on Tue.

    Joseph #5
The estimate cost is S$250 that covers 3 nights hotel and b/f, charter bus and one tour guide, seafood lunch and dinner on 1st day, nasi Padang on 2nd n 3rd day. You pay your own air tickets and Padang airport tax (rupiah 100,000). If there is insufficient fund, we will collect and top up, vice versa if there is excess, we will return the money.
The cost of 1st trip to Padang and Bukit Tinggi was S$210 for 3D2N. Initially we estimated S$200 for each person.

    Cheers, Chin

  6. Chin
We met at the last SHC meeting at Han’s and I had expressed my interest in Padang. Great that you are organising another one.
I think the date you suggested should be good.
What time Tuesday do we return? I ask because I teach Tuesday evenings.
Roughly, what is the cost of the flight and do you book the tickets or we do it ourselves? I have no idea how to book budget tickets on the net.
Thank you and I hope to join in this time.

  7. Hi chin,
Glad that you are organising another trip so soon after the last one as couldnt make it the first time. One question though, and I dont mean to be a wet blanket, but the news is that the haze may be making a return during the next couple of months. Wonder if Padang is affected by this phenomenon.
    Thanks.

    Arthur

  8. Hi Chin,

I am interested in the trip but I can’t take leave for the first 7 days of each month as I have to do monthly closing. Is it possible to travel after 7th or are you
    planning for a third trip?

    Christina WH

  9. The 2nd trip to Padang and Bukit Tinggi is on 1-4 Aug by Tiger Airways. Sin-Padang 1 Aug 2009 flight TR224 12.05-12.10; Padang -Sin 4 Aug 2009 flight 225 12.50-14.55.

If you are not sure how to book, pl ask your friend to assist. You have to book your own air tickets only then I will book the hotel room. We will stay in 4 star rated hotel.
Currently the total cost of return air ticket is S$158 from the airline web site. For those who want to buy and bring home lobster or avocado, pl buy the return luggage allowance of S$10.

Arthur #10, the chances of Padang is shrouded by haze is small as south westerly wind will blow towards Singapore and Padang is situated at the most western part of Sumatra.

Christina #13, so sorry that the dates clash with your timing. 3rd trip to Padang is unlikely in 2009 unless you follow me to Padang to purchase raw bird’s nest.

  10. Hee Weng Chin is a name that is read like Thomas Stamford Raffles. If you want to call the latter like you wd a friend, it’s Thomas. The family name comes at the end.

Haha, so Hee Weng, you have rested enough to find new courage to do it one more time? Will there be another Lisa to help in the chaperon or you hv already bagged Monalisa to smile a mile and mild all hiccups? Will there be another Cat-Y dashing for home to change, not her son’s passport but a teapot this time, for her passport?

Whatever, I think with so many ups and a few lows the last time, and smarting from experience, this 2bd trip shd be worth organising and I wish you well.

  11. Wah!…its now or never!..hhmm..

Alamak we just came back from ‘paradise’ then 2 wks later..again go jalan2!..
aiyo..v paiseh..cos my colleague also planning to travel, furthermore its 1st wk of the month, always a bit busy in ofis..must check first lah…..my heart pumping so fast now…tak boleh tahan!…hehe

    Chin..
Thank you so much for organising this trip again specially for us who missed the boat last time..looks like die die must go leh..

  12. OK…im confirmed going!…

Yeah!…we have Pauline & Daisy in the boat!
remind us of our MHS/CM trip!

JuneLim,Bira,Dolly,Molly,Lily,Rene wanna go not?..come lets have some fun & wallup the lobsters/crabs & goyang the bird’s nests!

  13. Sigh sigh sigh…:-) I was looking forward for this rerun. Hve to give this a miss, Nor….my old papa going for an op tom.
    U enjoy yourselves.

  14. JuneLim..
I understood your sentiment, but now its only June(its your month!..hehe)..we only going Aug, by then your dad wud be healthy oredi la..hhmm..

    Joseph@20
Go to Yahoo.com & type Tigerairways at ‘search’..then u recky slowly..but must be careful ur flight must matched thats given by our EO Chin, if not u landed some strange place…banyak susah hor!…haha
    I suggest u just look-see the website..don do anything yet..until u very sure ok..
I am still looking also…waiting for my gang!

  15. Hey Tim #16, don’t sabo me leh. I’m sure there’s many other kind souls out there who’s more than willing to help Chin out. As long as everyone who’s going on the trip are cooperative, have an open mind and lower some of their expectations, everything should work out fine.

Very importantly, be flexible and considerate in whatever you do and keep the EO or helper posted of any change of plans that you intend to do (e.g. going on your own or not joining in the group outing etc) – this should make the work of the EO and everyone else, easier & more manageable.

Kudos to you Chin, may your 2nd trip be even more memorable than the 1st and as a last advice to all, it’s better to buy the addnl kilo back UNLESS you’re 100% sure you’re not buying anything back. Lobsters & avocado is a must – it’s really value for money!!!!

Have fun everyone and share your experiences when you get back. May you all bring back lots of ‘GOLD’ and share with us, hahahahaha…….Rgds, Lisa

  16. Lisa, you know that I dont give any appreciation and show my gratitute cheaply. Your spontaneity in helping out had made that big difference btwn a staid holiday and one we still recall fondly. You will be god-send if you can make it a 2nd time.

Yes, i too echo what you summed up very well in yr earlier post : Be cooperative, have an open mind and lower some expectations. Be flexible and considerate in whatever you do and keep the EO or helper posted of any change of plans that you intend to do (e.g. going on your own or not joining in the group outing etc). It will help everyone immensely, and let’s not forget that the EO too wants to enjoy his holiday, and he is not a tour operator.

  17. Hi Nor,
I cant cfmed now la as I told u b4 d reason rite. But hor, just 2 let u noe hor, no bird nest hor.. According to Chin, he will hv 2 xport this raw bird nest out to another country 2 process la.. tau tak now?

Hi Chin, doe u dun felt d nid 2 explain but hor, I still think dat it wuld b best 2 explain here so that tose dat went previously and going tis time, are aware of this. Hence, I go ahead 2 said d abv liao..

  19. Hi chin,

Can you confirm the dates 1-4 August are firm?
I’m tempted to book the air tickets for 2 anytime now.

Since we have an extra day compared to the 1st trip, can
you list down a short itenary in yr main post?

    james

  20. James!

Good that u & buddy are going…lets gila again together!
Wah!..u more kancheong than me…super fast wanna book your ticket oredi ah?
Last wk, i just book ticket to paradise..this wk again book another ticket!…aiyo..like taking bus!..haha

this morning like spider ask me to lekas2 apply my leave..now so quiet…hhhmmm

  21. Hey Chin,
Are the dates 1-4Aug2009 firmed? Bcos my itch fingers want to book the air-tickets as early as possibe to take advantage of the lower pricing leh!
……..can we have Lobster Shasumi (on ice) and Lobster Blood (in rice-wine) instead of “cooking” them???? Thanks.

  22. Norlinda,

This morning I apply leave liao, suppose to book air tickets together with Suzhang after lunch, but hor got so much work to do, fedup lah. Tommorrow hor, you & Suzhang come to my workstation and book the air tickets, cepak ok. No Birdnest to eat, can buy or not? How to bring Lobsters back, put in the luggage meh? so sting…smelly lah…..

    Ah Nee

  23. Hi Chin,

Thanks for organising the 2nd trip as we missed the last one.I am interested to join the group to Pandang with my wife Dhevi. But, we need to get our leave approved first. Please include us in the list and I will let you know by 23 or 25 Jun upon getting the verbal clearance to go on leave. TQ

  24. James #28; Ivan Lim #31, The date for 2nd trip to Padang is confirmed on 1-4 Aug 2009. Pl refer to Comments #15 for flight details. Itinerary will be put up at a later date.

Lim Tian Soo #30, The lobsters for our dinner is Rp220,000/kg. For bringing home, it is Rp250,000 includes customs quarantine. Giant prawns are Rp220,000/kg. You may want to see the beautiful photos taken by Sockie during the 1st trip.

Ivan Lim #31, We have to prepare lobster sashimi and lobster blood ourself or show the chef how to prepare. The 1st trip we didn’t bring wasabi and so no sashimi.

Ah Nee #32. The lobsters will be packed for us like the 1st trip. The live lobsters will last for 8 hours without sea water under no refrigeration.

Sekaran #33, After you have booked and paid the air tickets, you announce in the comment section and then I will book the hotel rooms.

Lisa #24, Thanks for the advice and definitely we need people like you unselfishly render the assistance in order to make the trip enjoyable for everybody.

  25. Hey folks

If you want to buy home lobsters, avocados etc pls remember to buy baggage allowance when you book your air ticket hor. The last time we brought back 80+ kg of goodies and we pooled all our baggage allowances so that we need not have to pay for the extra baggage. I know Tiger Air had group booking for 15pax and above, maybe you all should check and see if there is any special deal on this in terms of baggage allowances…just my 2 cents

The other alternative is not to book any luggage allowance but give the $20 into the pool to pay for the shipment charges…..Some may buy more than others but I think there should be some give and take here…..if not hor we will need a CPA to go and help calculate the individual costs….did anyone call my name hahahahaha

Also for those who are not particular about sitting allocation you can save $10 if you choose not to have pre-allocated seats….no worries no one need to stand all the way to Padang LOL.

I would love to go again to take the sunset I missed in Bukit Tinggi and this time round I think there will be more places covered. But I guess priority should be given to those who did not make the 1st trip….soooo Chin please put me on wait list ya….btw this trip got durian or not huh?

    Karen

Wanna go and practice your ‘shooting’ again hehehehe….maybe we can do a small deviation and rent a car to take us around while the rest are doing the usual tour. What say you huh?

    Sockie

  26. Chin,

Susan Tan LC (SHC mbr) and me have just booked our tickets
per the dates you confirmed. We are at your mercy now!

    Nor#29,
Sure we can gila gila again. The last trip in Chiangmai I’ve
a ‘gila’ time looking for halal food for you. So ‘kesian’
to see you eat only ‘sayur’ while the rest of us enjoy the
Thai feasts. Now in Indonesia, Muslim food should be everywhere, so at least no need to ‘gila gila’ run around
    for halal food again.

Nevertheless, it’s good to check with CHIN if the restaurants
we are going to eat in are all HALAL.

See you in another ‘paradise’ soon.

    james

  27. Hi Chin, I am a new SHC member,I read about all the happenings on the 1st trip,so interesting,I would like to join this 2nd trip, I am going to for leave,if approve I will book my tickets and will inform you. I was at the gathering on 17 June , not sure if you were there too.

  28. James!
That was the sweetest memory i will cherish & never forget!
So fortunate to have a guy like you around on trips!Tks again :)

Now Padang is Indonesia..no need to worry, boleh relax.. sure the food mostly halal…unlike Bali, they wear songkok & kain sarong?..but dia makan lain tau!..hehe

    Ok Padang gang…jalan cepat….jalan!…

  29. EileenThean@37..

Yes!..bapak Chin was there lah…if u want to know the story..we all ‘harassed’ him to do this 2nd trip..until he tak boleh tahan!..so kesian..hehe

  30. To all,

Pls note if you book Tiger for two-way and you want to check
in luggage, you have to pay for 2x, i.e S$20.

However, if you travel lite and only intend to check in
yr lobsters and prawns only on yr return trip, try booking
the 2 trips separately. That way, you save S$10, if you
don’t mind the hassle with extra paperwork. Also note the
return trip is charged in US$ but converted to its
    equivalent in S$.

    Good luck.

    james

  31. Yes, James, you’re right, do travel light.

At the first Padang trip, there was this sexy who brought disposable panties.

As it were, Saturday was longer than Sunday, and since she wore a tank-top supposedly to show her enticing waistline and more, almost half a metre of her panties was seen covering her back. I hit a fit of delirium with my laughter. Where on earth did she find such huge panties taht probably made for elephants………

  32. Hi Chin,

Suzhang & myself just confirmed our tickets for Padang, 1 -4 Aug 2009. Nor & Lina, cepat jalan, quick lah…go and book your tickets. James & Susan, we going to “siow siow” at Padang again, like in Chiang Mai. Sockie, where got wait list, just come lah. Ivan, Suzhang said she will bring wasabi along for Lobster sashimi. Tian Soo, you book already or not, if not you will end up paying more, just like the Yunnan trip. hehee :)

    Ah Nee

  33. Hi Bpk Chin #34,
Have booked/confirmed my tickets for Padang 1-4 Aug 2009 already.
Erhmmmm……me only know how to eat the Lobster sashimi and drink the blood…..dun know how to prepare or show the chef how to do it…..(I mean draining the blood???).
As for Itinerary, can include a guided-visit to the Lobster Farm?
Ah Nee #42, Suzhang bringing wasabi…..you bringing the soya sauce? LOL….

  34. Ah Nee
Thanks for reminding me. I booked already. The extra money I paid for Yunnan trip is more than SGP/Padang airfare.

    Chin.
Please book a single room for me. I would not buy 15KG of Lobster. I’ll just put a couple of them in my haversack..can?

  35. Ok Ok lah…
I also booked my tickets la..
So we all ready to have great fun..play,sleep,makan together…. i wonder will be more rowdy than Chiangmai trip or not ah?..

Those still thinking..cepat, if not airfare will increase..then sob!sob! like the tongkat ali man!..hehe

  36. Hi Nor, Chin, Ivan, Ah Nee,

So nice of Chin to organise another trip. But I just cannot not say anything. I was there on first trip.

The lobsters cooked at the restaurant are just out of this world. It really takes a lot of energy to just eat the heads. Don’t waste them. And the nasi padang is really fanstastic. Enjoy, use your hands and ravish every single dish. Add a bit of tongkat ali into your avocado drink, and you will have a great sleep.

Take some advise on the insurance first, which to buy first, and join Chin for a real trip.

From a tip which I picked up in Perth, after you have boiled the big fellow, eat the body first and shrink-wrap the heat for later consumption in the fridge. Soup just great, leave some for me.

    Have fun.

    Terence Seah

  37. Dear folks

You must be very lucky that Pak Chin is organising the 2nd trip to Padang and is for 4D-3N (which is ideal).

Please remember to go to “pasar atas” which closed at 6.30 pm (the stuff at the entrance lane on the left side are better; if you dont have enough time dont go right inside)and take the horse-ride back to Hill Hotel.

After those seafood and lobsters feast; you need the walk and watch sunset. You are all in good hands of an affable Chin. Just go and enjoy yourself. Avocado juice is filling; so you know how to manage your meals.

I only realised I gained 2 kgs (avocados and food) from this trip when I went for yearly health screening the following week.

    Regards
    Helen

  38. Hi Chin,
Just booked tickets for my wife and I this afternoon. From all the preceding commentary in this forum , everyone is going to have a great time, so looking forward to an avocado and lobster feast.
Thanks in advance for all the arrangements you are going to make for the group.

  39. The following SHC members have booked air tickets and confirmed going for the 2nd trip to Padang n Bukit Tinggi on 1 Aug 09:

If you have booked the air ticket to Padang and your name is not shown up in the list, pl advise me to amend. If you have not booked the air ticket and your name appears in the list, pl do inform me to delete. The list is used for booking of hotels, transportation and meals.

Pauline Chew #22, have you and Lena Ho booked the air tickets?

Lim Tian Soo #45, the export of lobster and avocado require quarantine from Customs. Miss Ho/Mr Tham (lobster merchant)will pack the lobster and avocado together and make Customs
    declaration.

James Tan CL #36, Norlinda, All the food are halal. The chinese restaurants we will patronise are halal also.

We appreciate the advice and tips from those who have gone on the 1st trip. They are useful and very helpful to ensure a pleasant and enjoyable trip.
Pl take note of the comments by Lisa #24, Tim Liu #25, Dolly #26, Sockie #35, Terence #49 and Helen Wong #50.

  40. Hi Chin,
    I’m interested in going, also.
I was online trying to book the tickets & am wondering how to get the baggage allowance only for the return leg as you suggested in #15.

When I select the option, the baggage option is done for both legs. Any suggestions?

  41. Hi,
Just got the reply from Tiger’s hotline.
Just book your tickets online without baggage allowance.
Once completed, you can call them anytime before departure to upsize yr baggage allowance & it’ll be free.

MUST be done before departure date.

    cheers

  42. Hi Chin,
I have confirmed reservation for me & my wife Jane on TR 224 on 1/8/09 and return flight TR 225 on 4/8/09. Please make necessary hotel reservation for us and include our names on list of those going.
Lobsters, crabs, prawns, were mentioned, but will there be oysters? I love them, so I’m bringing some tobasco sauce.

  43. Suzhang bringing wasabi…..Ivan said I bring the soya sauce and Richard is going to bring tobasco sauce, what’s that sauce? hehehe….Andrew, what sauce you bring huh? Nor, you bring Oyster sauce and Lina, you bring Abalone sauce…. so fun, looks like going to have Lobsters cum all kind of sauce to go with…….. :)

    Ah Nee

  44. “Lobsters, crabs, prawns, were mentioned, but will there be oysters?” Only a few seafood were named but the sea has them all and more.

What Chin can and I am sure he will do is to dive deep into the Indian Ocean and swim for the 4D/3N. By early morning on the 4th day, he will emerge from the waters with a bountiful haul of all he can find in the ocean including the dragon palace with the dragon king hiding under his bed trembling.

    Hehe…………..

Seriously, Chin is a good chap and he will do everything he can to oblige but do however note that the indicated cost of $200 will only buy so much…………………

  45. Hi Andrew,
Take my advice, u r going 2 have hard times when u need 2 call their hotline as they are forever putting up on hold n u keep listening 2 their music only. Sometimes, these phone bills already can offset this waiting time liao. It was always easy for them 2 call but no vice versa lor.. I dun noe now that their svc can be changed so fast 2 provide this kind of svc lor.. Good luck.. Dolly

  46. Hi Tim,
Glad to know that the sea has them all and that you & Chin will do everything to oblige. Many, many thanks. Hope we can also get a mermaid or 2. What kind of bait for the mermaids? If u need any help to get them, just let me know. Ha ha ha!!!

  47. Haha, Richard-K, good fella you but good or not, you think I wd not hv myself volunteered as the bait if I get to go for a 2nd time?

Ok, since you’re a good chap this is how you will do as bait for the mermaids.

Do the reverse of the back-stroke i.e. lie face-down and keep still. The lowest part of you in the water is the lure. When you feel that it’s getting bigger, longer you know the mermaids are attarcted. But of cos, sometimes even the best fisherman loses his hook, bait and sinker.

Happy baiting and if you’re really very very lucky, the baited mermaid may be the choice concubine of the dragon king. But do be careful if ANee or Nor are also swimming in the waters – they wont bit but will take pictures……………..

  48. Hi Andrew#56,

Thanks for checking up with Tiger.
When I called, i seemed to get a different answer (fr a male
operator). He said that Tiger will upsize (tot this term
only used at McDonald) our booking to include only 1-way
luggage and the cost will be the same as that for Internet
booking. I asked him again to confirm what I heard was
    correct.

I think that reply makes sense, otherwise, the airline will
incur extra work yet give free service.

Anybody dealed with this issue before?

(Note: Tiger hotline 653-TIGER very difficult to get tru’.
Use your fixed-line phone if you don’t want to incur
    h.p charges)

  49. There’s a tweety bird said want to bunk with me..& another blue bird also wanted to fly together..
but donno whether they bot tickets or not?..cepat..must chop place,if not counter close..susah!..hehe

Lina..u still thinking to go or not..apa macam,so u hv to find a room mate hor….pick your choices!

  50. Dolly #62 & James #67,
Yep, you need to wait a long time so use the fixed line.

Yes, the term used is luggage upsize. And yes, the upsize costs the same; ie $10 for each leg that you want (for 15kg check-in). What they mean is that they wont be charging you more. If you recall, they charged you a service fee for using your credit card when you booked online.

Bottom-line is: Time is money. It’s prob not worth the hassle if you are working – Your time is worth more than that. For those retired, I guess it depends if you have better things to do whilst listening to their music. I spent it surfing & replying mails. hee hee

  51. “And yes, the upsize costs………$10 for each leg that you want…….”

Precisely, and that’s usually what you get for flying budget, and if the rumour is to be believed, this is how it works.

You ask for an upsize. They will scroll thru the pax list to find you the biggest in size, and put him to sit next to you. Not cheap. As Andrew-T pointed out, $10 just for a leg. So imagine how much it costs for 2 legs, 2 hands and a huge grotesque torso with a head of 2 metres in circumfrance?

Can you breathe sitting next to an elephant?

    So, still think of upsizing?

  52. May I know what is the cut off date for the registration? I will check with my wife of our schedule and hopefully can join you for this trip after purchasing the air tickets from Tiger Airways. Thank you

Henry #75, The room rate for Hotel Bumiminang (4 star)in Padang is S$92 with b/f. For Novetel Hotel (also 4 star) in Bukit Tinggi, the rate is S$124 with b/f. Those who want to have a room for himself will add 46+62+62=170.

  55. Hi Chin

As per Pauline’s posting at #18, please include me on the waitlist. Still awaiting boss’ approval and hoping for response during week of 6 July.

Date to Padang is just a week before board of directors’ meeting but must still try leh. Anyway, boss will also be on vacation at the time mah. Just hope don’t get leave approved and red letter at the same time though.

  56. Dolly, dolly,

Hope you confirm going for this 2nd Padang trip. TQ you, we definitely will have peace of mind with you being the coordinator. Looking forward to this FUN & enjoyable trip……..this is my experience with you being our Tour Leader at the Hainan Trip. Cheers! :)

  58. Dolly #78, What a lucky day when I see Dolly said that she would be the coordinator for the 2nd trip to Padang. Kam Siah Kam Siah. I surely need people like Lisa or Dolly to help organise a big group of happy going gila people leh. Everybody must pray hard that Dolly can join in lah. OK?

Nor #81, Updating at the main page is beyond my keyboard leh.

  59. Chin, dont understand estimate Dolly, she is more than a coordinator. She is a born natural matron, a chaperon and when there’s a need to, she can please God and scold the devil, all for the good of her charge.

Chin, with her around, we can indulge as those mischievious, frivolous, carefree 5 year old little boys again…….

I am contemplating of spending the next 14 days going to as many places as I can before returning to the churn again…………not sure where tho. Anyone? Any idea?

  60. Hi Chin ,

    My flight booking is confirmed.
Please add my name to your list. Thanks

I do not mind to share my room with any male member when you grouped us together.

How do I pay you for the rest for hotel, coach and meals?

Could you pls.list out a summary of your itinerary at your posting ?

    1) Thanks for organising the Padang Trip 2nd.time.
Surely, there must be something GOOD abt this place that prompt you and others to organise a 2nd.time. And with a passionate “tour guide” like you who frequents to Indonesia , I look forward to join the nice company of SHCians for a deep relaxing holiday with daily massages and to “pamper” my stomach with crabs, prawns, lobsters, fishes and the delicious avocado juices etc.:)

The way you describe Padang is just like the cartoonist Lat ” Balek Kampong ” and is a good break for us stil surviving in the “concrete” jungle.

  61. Hi Chin,

Btw.my email add is sfc0007@yahoo.com.sg if you need to post further details where we can have our meeting to firm up our trip.

Those who had NOT booked and sum yok yok like me,
I believe going to this place called Padang is a RARE opportunity for most of us and with a passionate tour guide like chin to bring us around all the more better.

The return airfare has just gone up from $158 to $198 in a matter of less than a week.

And so better be “KIASU” before you missed our 2nd.boat.

3rd. boat ???????? May not exist.

  62. Hi Chin,
May I ask, which hotel will we be in?
    2) How & when do we pay for the hotel, etc?
    3) Do we pay for the lobsters, etc.in Rupiahs or S$?
    4) Your advice on changing of Rupiahs – here or in Padang?
    5) Any further advice?

    Many tks.

  63. Hi Chin,

    Sorry to be a pest.

How much rupiahs do we need to change is slightly more than enough for food and coach , air tax at Padang etc and if we only buy some souvenirs and NOT live sea food ?

The rest of my questns had been taken up by comment # 88.

    Thanks.

  64. Hi Chin,

Air ticket did not print where to take the air plane.

Is it Budget terminal or Terminal 1 ?

I had indicated that I need to buy insurance with the tick box provided but when I received the itinerary air ticket,it did not reflect the insurance coverage.

Then , How can I still continue to buy the travel insurance ?

    SOS! Pls. help.
    Thanks.

  65. Steven,
TigerAir is at Budget Terminal. No necessary to buy insurance from the airline itself if u dun 1 2. You can buy from ur usual insurance agent. But if u r 1 2 get from TigerAir itself, just go online 2 re-activate this again but there mit b an admin charge tag to this – Sori, this 1, I m not 2 sure. Alternatively, try ur best by calling TigerAir hotline. Hope this can help.. Dolly

  66. Hi All Padangnites,
Just to inform u that there was some info in ST today that it is compulsory for all visitors going to Indonesia from countries affected by H1N1 flu to wear face masks when they arrive at the country’s airports and other entry points. So please do the necessary.

  67. Steven #90,

If you have bought online travel insurance from Tiger,
you need to go back to their website, key in yr booking #
and name, and the policy # is reflected right at the bottom:

    AIG Insurance Policy Details
    Policy Type: Flight-only Travel Insurance
    Policy Number: FD468303

If you have not, the operator told me me have to get an
an external policy as neither we or they can amend.

    james

  68. Steven…
U very kesian..bot air ticket..donno where to naik..

  70. Hi Dolly , James Tan and Norlinda,
Thanks for your great help. Appreciated re: my 1st. time taking Budget Airlines and buying tickets on-line booking.

    Hi Norly,
Norlinda, thanks for being my secretary but cannot hired you lah, you sangat mahal nanti saya makan ikan bilis dan timun tiap tiap hari.Kesian tak ada buffet lah… :(

OK, calling Norlinda and Hamidah, there is plentiful of coconut trees and hills in Padang, this time no need to build artificial trees and hills as in D n D as uggested by Hamidah .

This time at Padang playground we can have our BOLLYWOODY dance and sing ” yan tak chow ya na, umg yan tak chow wa lai (in Cantonese dialect) among the trees. Ha! ha! :)
Perhaps Tim Liu or Ah Nee can translate for you.

    Deal or no Deal?

  71. Hi Chin,

During my trips to ZhiHan, we booked into budget hotel which cost S$30+ for 2, Chiangmai, Cambodia & Bangkok, checked into guest house, also S$20+ – S$30 for 2. Wah, the room rate for the 2 4-star hotels mentioned in your post #77 cost $92 & 124 respectively comes with b/f. Is this for 4 sharing or 2 sharing? If I wan to settle for something less than this amount, am I able to find?

    Pls adv.

    rgds
    susan tan

  72. Hi Chin,

Unlike others who may be buying lobsters,prawns,etc..,I am more interested in buying coffee.

Heard that Sumatran coffee is one of the BEST in the world for high grade premium coffee becos of its ideal climate and soil.

If time is available, could you pls.bring us to those places where we could buy H.G. Sumatran coffee.

I am sure besides me there are other SHCians who are coffee connoiseurs as well and had this in mind.

Is this 4-star hotel equipped with a “CLEAN” swimming pool and what other facilities does it provide? Heard some of the pools in Batam do not have clean filtration and chlorination systems and I am not sure that the same goes to Padang.

Once confirmed where we are staying,it would be useful if you could provide us with a link of the specified hotel.

    Thanks in advance.

  73. Hi Chin and others,

…Henry #75, The room rate for Hotel Bumiminang (4 star)in Padang is S$92 with b/f.

For Novotel Hotel (also 4 star) in Bukit Tinggi, the rate is S$124 with b/f. Those who want to have a room for himself will add 46+62+62=170.

I just manage to find 2 useful links to Bumiminang Hotel, Padang and the Novotel Coralia Bukit Tinggi where we will be tentatively staying ????

At least we can get some ideas of both hotels.

    Bumiminang Hotel :-
    Pls. click at http://professionaltravelguide.com/Destinations/Padang-Indonesia/Hotels/Reviews/Hotel-Bumiminang/Amenities-p1355929/

The Novotel Coralia Bukit Tinggi at http://indohotels.net/bukittinggi-hotels/bukittinggi/novotel-coralia-bukittinggi.html

  74. Hi Chin,

We would appreciate v.much if you could write down the itinerary of 4D and 3N of Padang/Bkt Tinggi at the front of the post and whatever important info abt the trip.

That will save us a lot of time instead of scrolling up and down to read the comments.

    Goodnight, ZZzzzzzzzzzz

  75. Richard #88, We pay the lobsters, avocado, prawn cracker in S$. You need to change S$ to rupiah for personal expenses such as massage, spa or souvenirs. Pl refer to comments #8 on the budget and expenses. We will collect the money of S$250 at the Budget terminal on 1 Aug.

Steven Chan #89,98,99, Thanks for the link to Hotel Bumiminang in Padang and Novetel Hotel in Bukit Tinggi. You may refer to http://www.asiarooms.com also.

The good Sumatra Arabian coffee is contracted to the buyer and you will not be able to buy in Padang. Just like bird’s nest, although West Sumatra produce a lot but you won’t be able to buy in Padang. They are exported by the buyers to other countries.

I heard many used the Hotel Bumiminang or Novetel swimming pool in the 1st trip. May be let others comment on the conditions of the pool as I didn’t use them. I was too busy happily arranging for a lot of things.

Susan Tan #97, We are staying at the 4 star hotels and I think majority would prefer that. There are many hotels or hostel or dormitory which are cheap but the standard is not that good. The room is 2 sharing.

  76. Hi Chin,

Thanks for your comments #101 BUT you have still MISSED out out my comment#100.

    Re: Hi Chin,
We would appreciate v.much if you could list out the DAILY itinerary of 4D and 3N of Padang/Bkt Tinggi at the front of the post and whatever important info abt the trip.

That will save us a lot of time instead of scrolling up and down to read the comments.

    Looking forward to your reply.

  77. Hi Chin,

Thank you for spending so much time and effort to organise
    2 trips to Padang already.

I noticed that hotel took up $170 / $250 or almost 70% of the
allocated budget. Wouldn’t it be a bit wasteful to pay so
much just to bunk into a little room, shower and sleep.
Maybe just watch a little TV/cable.

Can we better utilise this amount or better still, move to
a more basic hotel and save some cost?
In many of the tours organise to nearby countries that I
have joined, we travel lite and go for the basics.

What do the rest of the group think?

Sorry that you have spent a lot of time planning for this
trip and I don’t mean to pour cold water.

Nevertheless, I will go with the final decision that you
    make.

    james

  78. James #104,
See #77: “The room rate for Hotel Bumiminang (4 star)in Padang is S$92 with b/f. For Novetel Hotel (also 4 star) in Bukit Tinggi, the rate is S$124 with b/f. Those who want to have a room for himself will add 46+62+62=170.”

So, if you choose to have a room all by yourself, you will have to pay additional at 170 less either 92 or 124 depending on which hotel we will finally be staying……..

    Terence #49,
“It really takes a lot of energy to just eat the heads.”

No problem. Have solved this energy issue…will bring along a Kitchen Shear (scissor!) especially for the Lobster heads, U2 Prawn heads, Crayfish heads…..etc

Lastly, am still asking around on “how to extract the lobster blood??”……LOL :))))

  79. Steven #98,
“Heard that Sumatran coffee is one of the BEST in the world for high grade premium coffee becos of its ideal climate and soil.”

Trust that you meant Roasted Cofi Beans/Powder (Retail Packings Size) and not raw beans by the tons…..
It’s possible to get it…..no problems just need to ask around when we get there. If purchase quantity is reasonable, the Roasting House/Supplier can deliver it to us at the Hotel….let play by ear and see how it goes.

  80. Hi Chin,
I agree with James #104. After paying for the hotel, there won’t be much left for anything else. would it be possible to find a Budget hotel or something more basic. Sometimes a small hotel is cosier and staff more friendly. We really appreciate what are doing. I hope that I’m not being critical or throwing a wet blanket to your untiring efforts. However, I will go with what you decide.
May I also ask whether we can change money easily?
    THANKS.

    Richard

  81. Hi James Tan at #104,

..I noticed that hotel took up $170 / $250 or almost 70% of the allocated budget. Wouldn’t it be a bit wasteful to pay so much just to bunk into a little room, shower and sleep.
Maybe just watch a little TV/cable.

I fully agree with your comment, James.

    My suggestion :-
Perhaps we could stay in “tourist” class hotel becos the whole day we will be moving to see places n having our meals. Only in the late evening,we go back to our hotel to bathe, relax, perhaps visit the lounges for an hr or two and sleep and then comes a new day.

Time passes v.fast. Based on my previous experience, when we stayed in the Zhuhai Paradise Resort hotel in Zhujiagor for $500 per night for 2 nights all provided in the itinerary, I must say it was a sheer waste of money.By the time we arrived at our hotel in the late evening, most of us were v.tired ,relax, bathe and sleep.

And so the time spent staying in the hotel is v. short and it is not worth paying for such a high price. So tired that we do not bother to have drinks in the music lounge or patronise the disco or explore their facilities.

All we need is a decent hotel that provides clean bedrooms to sleep and reliable shower facilities.

What do the rest of the group suggest ?

Nevertheless, I will go with the final decision that you
    make.

  82. Hi Ivan Lim at #106,

Thanks for responding to my queries abt Sumatran coffee.

Trust that you meant Roasted Cofi Beans/Powder (Retail Packings Size) and not raw beans by the tons…..

I just like to buy the roasted grounded coffee powder which are available in packs ??? .

I am not a businessman like Starbucks and so I do not need to buy the raw beans by the tons. ha! ha! :)

let play by ear while in Padang and see how it goes.

  83. Hi Ivan #105,

We all know the hotel rates as Chin had published it
    several times.

My contention is why have to spend so much just for putting
a roof over our heads and a sheet under our butt (sorry
for the pun) for these 3 days?

As Susan #97 has pointed out, budget hotels under S$40 are
easily available in many of these nearby countries.

I’m sure we can still have a wonderful times going around
places and enjoying the food and massage, among other
activities, without the ‘luxury’ of a 4-star hotel.

Richard, Steven, thanks for supporting. However, must admit
final decision still left to the EO.

    james

  84. S$40 works out to be about S$13 per night, abt Rp100,000 (per person)…….agreed that decision by EO is final.
Do note that a “4-star” hotel (aka Tourist/Biz class hotel) in areas like Padang is more like a 2-star (or max 2-1/2 stars) in comparison to areas like SBY, MDN, JKT etc……plus we are a big group, safety reasons, hygiene/emergency considerations. If we are a smaller group of 6 or less (and w/o the female gender), that’s a different story…..
    Anyway, EO’s decision is final…..

  85. 1) Hi Chin,

Despite our earlier repeated comments a few days ago we are still waiting anxiously for the daily itinerary to Padang n Bukit Tinggi to be written on the top of the post for the convenience of all who are confirmed going.

We are wondering what is holding you up ?

    2) Hi James Tan,

Thanks for your sharing re: comment 110.
….My contention is why have to spend so much just for putting a roof over our heads and a sheet under our butt (sorry for the pun) for these 3 days?

activities, without the ‘luxury’ of a 4-star hotel.

As Susan #97 has pointed out, budget hotels under S$40 are
easily available in many of these nearby countries.

Could we then settle for “tourist” class hotels instead and save the money to have more seafood and other local Indonesian specialities instead ?

What abt the “silent” majority think ?

  86. Hi Steven Chan#112

“what abt the “silent” majority think?”

Me too dun mind a cheaper hotel, then we buy more coffee or lobsters right,,,he..he..he,

but let’s leave it to the EO’s decision, he’s indeed very kind and sporting to have organize this 2nd trip for us… looking forward to a wonderful trip!!

    thanks Chin,, appreciate yr effort.

  87. Nothing was known when I (and most of us) signed up for the first Padang trip. No cost was indicated. No itinerary. There was apprehension but like a flock of sheep, we trusted the shepherd (who too was himself an unknown quantity as he was a very new SHCian then).

On our return, as all can read in the comments, there were out-pourings of appreciation to him. I did tease Hee Weng whether he still had enough in him to organise another trip, and clearly, bowed to requests and more requests, he obliged.

Hee Weng is in diverse bizes which, however, do not count tour operation as one. The personal interest he has, if it can be said so, is in the sale of lobsters but then the price of the lobsters (and after one has tasted it) is clearly given. Purchases from the 1st trip were good and being the discerning consumers we all are, that answers the doubting thomases whether it was worth the buy.

(I didnt buy any tho as I cant get myself to kill the lobsters but probabl;y wd rear it, which isnt my forte).

When Victor and I each asked for a single room at The Hills (at Bt Tinggi), we had to pay an additional 600k rupiah each (about $86) but for that bit more privacy, we had no qualms in the top-up. The hotel was safe, clean and located at a place where “burrow” shopping was easy.

It’s never breezy to plan a holiday. More so if it’s to meet the many different interests of fellow memnbers, with no profit (or litle profit) in mind.

It’s good to clear the air before the holiday-makers leave for their vacation but once they are into the holiday, there must be a lot of give-and-take. Only then will the holiday be fun and memorable.

  88. Hi All

I fully agreed with my Pie Kia Boyfren – Tim Liu – Is very nice of Chin to organise another Padang Trip for SHC.

Paying about $50/night for the two hotel we stayed , I think it is very worst it . A nice cosy room, nice shower & a good rest after the sight-seeing …

Is never easy to be an tour EO and yet Chin do it the 2nd time again … so please don make thing difficult for him ..

Just go with the flow….We paid only $210 for the first trip including fresh seafood , big lobster and Nasi Padang – never travel that cheap in my past holiday..

    karen

  89. Aiyo yo….whats the fuss all about, not eazzzzy to be a EO, you know. This is a short free & easy holiday, just enjoy lah, don’t worry so much…relax folks. :)

    Ah Nee

  90. Tim #114, Karen #115,Ah Nee#116

    Absolutley agreed with you all.

It’s not an easy task for Chin and yet he still took the challenge to do a 2nd trip for those who missed out on the frist one. On our first trip most of us don’t even have any idea how much the land tour etc were going to cost us and when we were told to pay up $200 first and later to top up another $10….. there was no question asked.

My guess is Chin might have paid some extra money from his own pocket as I think the $210 we paid was definitely not enough to cover the hotel, food, transport and not forgetting the tips for the hotel staff and tour guide.

This time round he still has to pay his own airfare to bring the 2nd group there…how much more can one ask of a nice guy like him huh?

I think most of you who signed up for this trip had already been told how much the (estimated) land tour etc would cost, so go with the flow and enjoy the holiday lah.

There will be people who want to stay in more comfortable hotels and others who do not mind cheap ones. Some may love seafood and others don’t, some like to shop other like to take in the sights…can you imagine what a nightmare would be for the EO to accede to all individual request?????

We do not want to give Chin so much trouble that he may not even want to do another trip for those who missed out on the 1st and this trip or for those who may want to do a re-visit later.

Oh yes, one reminder for those who are thinking of buying home the lobsters…you cannot buy and pack them individually in your own baggage hor. There are permits etc that need to be applied so the lobsters have to be checked in as one shipment and there will be addtional costs if you do not gaive up your baggage allowance to do a group check in for the lobsters. I understand that the airline has the right to object such pooling of baggage allowances so be mentally prepared to pay for additional cost so that this does not come as a surprise for anyone and I think it would be ABSOLUTELY unfair if Chin have to end up paying for these from his own pocket…Tim I don’t think Chin has any personal interest in the lobster trade as this si owned by Mr & Mrs Ho who are friends of Chin.

I had wanted to hold my silence but cannot hold any more so have to put in my 2 cents worth hahahahahaha

    Sockie

  91. Hi All

Thanks sockie & Tim for writing la..

Think what Chin get from Mr & Mrs Ho was just an extra “Big , Giant & Huge” lobster for the night only and this kind soul share it with the other as well.

A Big Thanks from “those at the first Trip” to Chin.

Co – EO – Lisa – why so quiet … speak up and let the rest know how tough is Your job as well as Chin job la (haha)

    Karen

  92. OK Lah! Moving with flow…move it! move it! I am just a leech….tagging along with the flow….LOL :)))

    Hey Tim, Karen and Sockie,
Out of curosity; how do you differentiate a male lobster from a female lobster? For crabs, it is quite clear….
Which is a better feast? A male lobster or a female? For crabs, it was a matter of preference….but lobster…mmmmmhhhmmm how are?

  93. Hi Karen #118,
Sorry for the silence, it’s becos I’ve been very busy at work and also trying to clear and hand over some of my work before I go to Genting this Friday.

My advice to all who’re going for this trip, to keep an open mind and not think about costs (whatever it is). Just enjoy the trip and not think about costs. As shared by all those who’ve been on the 1st trip, whatever the costs, it was well worth it. You do eat seafood until you vomit – jokes aside. We had trouble finishing up the crabs which was swimming with too much sauce, so you guys & gals are lucky that we’ve went for the 1st trip and return with all the advices on what’s good and what’s not, so I’m sure this is going to be a fantastic trip if everyone just adopt the ‘give & take’ attitude and not expect too much, then everything would be fine. So enjoy yourselves everyone, whatever you do or request, just put yourself in that person’s shoe and you’ll know what I mean. Happy holidays everyone. Kind regards, Lisa

  94. Weiwei, Both Sam n me booked our airtickets liao despite d fact, we had paid much more den tose dat booked earlier but we still go ahead lor. As far as other arrangements are concerned, EO kong simi tio simi lor..

  95. Hi Dolly,

Thanks for being the co-ordinator for EO Chin.
This makes easier for him as I believe he is busy
with his other businesses as well.

Dolly, I ‘m ok with the arrangements too.

Thanks again for volunteering to be the Co-ordinator for the Padang trip and also happy to know that you are joining us .

You are the LIVE wire of our grp as you had been doing the same as EO in 2008.

Let us look forward to our memorable and enjoyable trip to Padang and Bkt.Tinggi.

Many thanks to Chin for organising this trip a 2nd. time. for SHCians.

    Steven Chan

  96. Dolly #121, Thanks for joining the 2nd trip and for making the trip an enjoyable and pleasant for everyone. kam Sia leh.

Steven #112, Sorry for the waiting to see the itinerary of the 2nd trip. My friends Ms Ho/Mr Tham in Padang are travelling to Surabaya on 1 Aug and I am comtemplating to change the sequence so that we can have the best arrangements. They make sure that the Chinese restaurants do not over charged us as they know the prices. Many years ago I brought 3 Cerebos VIP from Spore and Thailand to Nelayan Restaurant for lunch. When I saw the bills, my heart beat stop for a while. It was so b# expensive.

Anyway, thanks for reminding and i have make up my mind to go for this itinerary so that we have the best of timing, fun and leisure. Whether to put up on the post is the decision of SHC Manager. I have no say on it.

Tim #114, Thanks for the kind and encouraging words. I have no personal interests or benefits in Ms Ho’s lobster sales. In fact I called her for the price of lobsters before I told her I am going to Padang to see whether she jack up the price for the rich Sporean. I also checked the price of Sumatra lobster in Spore. They are double in price.

However Ms Ho has interest in my bird’s nest business at one time. They also export bird’s nest for me.

The close friendship we have is also Mr Tham always remembers me as someone who saved his life. I brought him to Kuala Lumpur to seek medical treatment on heart problem. Three of his neighours died one after another due to stroke and severe heart attack. All have similar problems like Mr Tham before they died.

Sockie #117, Yes, don’t sneak lobster and avocado in your hand or check in luggage. They need Health certificate for fish n fish products and Phytosanitary cert by Quarantine Agency which will be done by Ms Ho.

Thank you for your nice words. At first I don’t believe the budget but yes, example we spent Rp3,311,775 (+Rp1,267,000 for crabs supplied by Ms Ho at cost) for our good fresh fish, big sea prawn, big crabs seafood lunch. A copy of our expenses is with Lisa.

Karen #115,118. Thank you for your compliments. I believe the people in the 1st trip are wonderful people that made the trip enjoyable for each and everyone. Some sacrificing their check in facility, gave up their front seats, sharing their food etc

Actually I feel disheartening by some of the written or uwritten comments but I take console in knowing Lisa in this 1st trip. Lisa introduced her best friend to me who is a very sweet and kind hearted lady.

  97. Lisa

How come we travelled togather for the whole trip, we don know about u introduced a “Sweet & kind hearted” lady to chin huh?? (haha)

    Karen

  98. “I fully agreed with my Pie Kia Boyfren – Tim Liu……..”

I recognise my name but cdnt see too well thr rest off my kid’s computer from an arm’s length. So I thot Karen was caling me a Doyen but a Pickled one for that.

Well, the days fisting for the winner is over. My desire and preoccupstion now are to make as much as I can and to retire in 2 years’ time, and to plan what little I can do then with my cpf depleted by the botched investments i made.

Ivan, you asked how to tell a male lobster from a female? Easy. Lift the lobster and look………a scrutiny, a body check may be necessary.

While you wont find an appendage dangling, you can find 2 minuscule orifices in some and these are the females. My worry is, what you gonna do when you find a bu……….will your find arouse the basic instincts which we men have and are proud 9at our age) to show? Whatever, be kind………….it’s just a she-lobster.

Hee Weng, good that you hv come forth to deny of any pecuniary interest in the lobster biz as I was told you were an investor with the Thams, but frankly, even if it were so, so what?

“………..Lisa introduced her best friend to me who is a very sweet and kind hearted lady.”

You’re right. I met this lady once (together with you) and she’s indeed very sweet but you’re lucky that she opened her heart to you to warm you with her kindness. So envious of you that I must now bet that Lisa has more than one best friend………………

  99. Tim #125,
Aiya, just asking only ma….lucky! dun hv tat kind of animal instincts. But erh, on a more serious note:

    Q. How can you tell the difference between male and female lobster?

A Female lobster generally are wider in the upper dorsal tail region. This allows room in the tail to store the premature eggs. Females can also be distinguished by their soft, thin set of first pleopods (swimmerets). Males have a hard, thicker set of first pleopods, and have smaller hard appendages (masculina) attached to their second set of pleopods.

If you look at the first pair of swimmerets on the underside of the tail you will be able to tell if you have a male or female. If they are hard and rigid then you have a male and if they are soft and feathery you have a female. You can also tell by looking at the width of the tail. A female will have a wider tail compared with an equivalent sized male. She needs this extra width to carry her eggs.

Aiyo, above veri scientific…wat pleopods; wat appendages. You know wat Nor will say: APA MA CHIAM INI…

  100. Dear Ivan Lim #126,

Beside all the characteristics that u have spell out, thus the male lobster possesses attractive colours than the female ones.Like peacock it has such a vibrant colours on its body.Isn’t it easy to distinguish rather than to scrutinize it one by one.

    Pak Chin #123,

Your camaraderie disposition is very much admired. Even Phil Collin can’t be much sexier than you.

Looking forward to our next trip to Bangkok. With $100 Sing dollars we can get diamond or ruby.Their authenticity is yet to be assured.Haa… haa…m still curious!!!

    Rgds

  101. Hi Dolly,

My handphone no is XYXYXYY and my preference for the cooked lobster.

I had just replied my email to you.Pls. check.
    Thanks for gentle reminder.

  102. Hey Chin #123

Don’t be disheartened. We would like you to enjoy this trip too although you’re doing it again so soon after the first and for our sake at that.

See it this way. You have given us an opportunity and we have chosen to take it. If I had any queries or contentions which can help to make the second trip better or so, I should think I would have taken it up before and not after confirming my participation. More so especially when there had been so much information from the first trip already.

I’m sure like all EOs, you would like the best outcome. All of us may have our differing expectations but do remember we have made the choice.

Hey all, let’s make the best of this trip and enjoy ourselves.

    :) dAISY

  103. Yeap yeap, Daisy, another LianHuay joining us but tis time hor, LianHuay got LianO 2 tag along liao…

  104. Hi Chin # 123

Don’t be disheartened, just ignore the unpleasant comments as long as you know you have done your best. I believe the majority of us appreciate your good intention and the thankless task of organizing the Padang trips not once but twice for the sake of SHCians. The Padang trip was my 1st gathering and a total stranger to SHC. But I truly enjoyed myself with all the wonderful people around me. We just have to keep an open mind.

It’s nice to hear that you got to know a kind and sweet lady thru’ Lisa.

  105. hi bro chin #123

life is short 2 be disheartened ,pls cheer up ,,if cant den let me help u my bunkmate wif my snore @ nite , i can cofrim sure cure 1 !!! hahaha..

  107. Hi Sam @136,

Just taken on a ‘job’ and it’s giving me hell lah.

Am interested in Padang but afraid to commit because of this new responsibility. Have to live with it for a while.

Enjoy yourself in Padang with all the food, scenery and friends. It pains me to not be able to go.

    Cheers to all

  108. Rosna #127, Daisy #133, Lorraine #135, Thank you for the encouraging words for me to move on and will do my best to make the 2nd trip as enjoyable as possible for everyone.

For those who are going for 2nd trip to Padang and Bukit Tinggi on 1 Aug, please attend the coming SHC monthly meeting on 25 July, Sat 5pm at Chinese Language Centre Canteen.

  109. Hi Richard,

If you can give me yr email address to jtan04@singnet.com.sg
I’ll give you the ‘slide show’ software which acts as a
screen saver too. All you need is to copy all yr pix to
a directory and bravo, the software will take care of the
    rest.

    rgds,
    james

  110. Chin, dolly,

How do you want the common fund of $250 to be transferred
to you? Tru’ atm/i.b or cash on 25/7 at Ghim Moh?

Pls note some ppl may not turn up at monthly gathering so
still need a bank acct from you to transfer, unless you
prefer we pay you on the day of the trip.

    james

  111. HI All,
According to Chin, he would prefer that d $250 to be passed to us only at the departure itself at the Budget Terminal as Chin will only change these amount upon arrival at Padang with his local fren there.

Hence, for those twin/triple sharing, pls pass to me d $250 on the day itself except for Tian Soo, whereby he will need to pay extra for single room.

Hope that this is clear and acceptable to everyone.

    Cheers. Dolly

  112. Hi Dolly/Chin,
We have paid extra S$40.00 for extra baggage(Return). But we shall only be having hand baggage both sectors. Extra 30 kg for lobsters & avacadoes on return. Since we have paid for 30kg to Padang, we thought of bringing some children’s toys to be given to some children’s home in Padang. Is this feasible or advisable? We don’t want to give you extra headache/load. Your advice, please. If it’s too much trouble, forget it.

  113. HI EO & my bunk mate bro chin ,

iam looking 4ward 2 tis trip wif all de nice ppl & of course la de makans…

btw , i cant make it 2 tis mth gathering & yr meeting,, it fine wif me , will just follow yr command wif no ? ask during de trip 1 !!! ai sai bo huh ? ai every 1 hua yi hua yi lor & come back & HUAT HUAT HUAT after whack long sia ai ong liao !!! cheers & every 1 in SHC ve a nice day !!!

  114. Richard #143, You can bring the children toy to give to the under-privileged in Padang or Bkt Tinggi. You have to pre arrange who and where to hand over as we are staying in the city. I hope you are not thinking of standing by the road and start distributing. The police may think that you are selling the toy. Our good intention may be misinterpretted as otherwise, right?

  115. 30 kg of children’s toys………..that’s quite a load, equivalent to about 100 barbie dolls each standing at 6 inches, or 15 toy godzillas of Steven’s height.

Likely to take all the 3 days lugging barbie/godzilla to give away to kids chanced to meet on the tour. Barbie shd behave but godzilla might come to life and wreak havoc when they are brought to the forested Pinnacle @ Bt Tinggi, hehe.

Seriously, speaking from my experience in the last trip, I didnt get to see kids in need, probably bcos we were housed in good hotels not in any underpriviledged locale.

While taken by the tour guide to a tourist batik shop, I made time for myself to some neighbouring houses nearby where the kids were cutee, adorable and friendly but didnt appear to be deprived. I bought 3 walls cornettos and offered them to 3 kids but they ran away, then looked back and giggled at me from a distance. So I ate one and put the other 2 in my pockets…………….

  116. Hi Chin

Borrow this post to follow up on toys for the deprived.

Terence used to collect toys for the deprived and packed them in boxes to be sent to Chiangmai. Not sure if he still does that. Do you, Terence?

  117. Hi Oi Cheng, RichardK, I made my trip to North Thailand at the end of the year. Yes, if Richard has some for me. Yes I shall play with them first and then bring it up end of the year.

    Terence Seah

  118. Hello Hello folks,

I would like to check with those who went for the 1st Padang trip on the following doubts:

    1) Hotel “wu” provide Hairdryer “bo”?
    2) Mini kettle clean or not?…if dirty, I bring my own.
    3) Hotel got Spa / swimming pool? if have, then I bring my swimming costume lor.

Don’t said I fussy hor, I ask only because you all have been there, normally I don’t ask…..just bring everything, but since I have the privilege, why not? hehehe…..

    :) Ah Nee

  119. ANee,

    1. Hotel has stacks of charcoal for you to burn for warmth (since yr hubby wont be going to hug you at nite) and, obviously, you can dry yr hair with it.

    2. The kettle has that familiar ammonia smell. Whem I askeed, the chambermaid ttold me that it’s usuall doubles up as a “lew wu” (nite soil pan) as it’s less inconvenient to walk to the loo to easee oneself while still very deep in one’ sleep. Clean if you belong to thee older generation and conssider urine as a disinfectant.

    3. Spa & swimming pool are there and so are strict dress codes. To use them you need to be in swimming trunks. Why? From experience, some skinny people wore E-cups, hid things in there and brought them out. One cant hide too much in swimming trunks….maybe no more than 1 banana and certainly, not anything as big as a water melon.

  120. Ah Nee #150

I didnt notice hair dryer in the room. Not sure you need to call housekeeping for one. The kettle in my room is just passable.

There are swimming pools in both hotels. As for spa, I got a very good job done at Bukit Tinggi.

    Regards
    Helen

  121. Hello Hello folks again,

Not that I am “lor so” huh, am wondering how long is the journey from Padang to Bukit Tinggi….. I need to decide whether to take motion sickness pills or not? susah lah :(

  126. honey Ah Nee,

a couple more days to go for that remarkable padang trip.Do make yourself happy and bring home all the sweet memories.

Just a little 5cents tips from me as not to forget to do some nature walk after midnite to see million stars dropping. If u continue gazing the sky u can see phraseology emerges as man from venus and woman from mars. Don’t come and scold me hor…if u can’t see any ok!!!

After a long tiring journey have a good dip into the hotel pool which is fantastically clean and refreshing. The pool is fill with spring water. U definitely enjoy it.

Let the guys know too if they do their massage treatment. The package come with barber service as well. Please ask around. Don’t come and tell me i lie hor…

Last but not least don’t forget to smile through out your journey.

    HAPPY HOLIDAY!!!!

    Rgds

    Rose White

  127. Darling Rose……

Thanks for your SWEET wishes, surely our “siow siow” gang will enjoy ourselves again. This morning, I reminded my buddies to bring swimming costume…..in case we want to dip in the spring water pool and gazing the twinkle twinkle little stars…got Venus & Mars meh? Will try the massage, becos it’s relatively cheap there, but not the Hair cut lah… With Nor sayang & Dolly around, gauranteed FUN wan…….. :)

    Ah Nee

  128. “honey Ah Nee,……..tips from me…not to forget to …..walk after midnite to see………man from venus and woman from mars……….dip into the hotel pool…..do their massage treatment….come with barber service as well……Last but not least don’t forget to smile through out……”

If ANee sacrifices her beauty sleep, joins these wonderful men and women to dip in the pool after midnite and go for her barber treatment, she might get so excited that she let them cut & cut her hair which removes not only her silverhairs but also all her hair.

And you still want a botak-head to smile throughout?

    Phew, what tips !

  129. Hi All,
Just a last minute reminder to all those who wants to go for massages and spas. Pls try not to go in too big a group and don’t sign up for the packages as you’ll get short-changed like we did. It may sound cheaper but you ended up with a lot less in the end.

Would advise a group of no more than 4-5 at a time, that way, you’ll be assured of good and full-fledged treatment.

Beware of the facial if you’re not ready for a really deep skin cleanse as I understand from those who did, that they do really scrub hard on your face, so if you’ve very sensitive skin, better give this a miss. Having said that, I believe I saw Eileen, Sockie and Shirley’s skin glow after they had their facial done, so maybe you’d like to ask them individually for their feedback.

Not sure about the guys, but I can hear lots of giggles and laughter coming from Terence and Fred when they were having their massages -not sure if Tim was in that room too. Tim, care to comment? Heheheh….Rgds, Lisa

  130. Hehe, Lisa, of cos I’ll comment.

I wasnt with Fred and Sengh but having shared a bed and spent 1 nite with the latter at Sijori, I can tell you there cd only be 1 reason why they giggled.

Sengh is good, really good when he’s in the mood. His mouth can do more than a good hoot. While sausage is his staple food, in Fred he found something hard like wood which cd also shoot. So every inch of Fred he tickled to make him shoot. In btwn his giggles you wd have heard him whisper Hey Jude as Fred made all positions and patterns to suit…….

I was in the partition next to where 2 of our gals had their massage. They didnt giggle; they screamed and groaned as if it was their first taste of ice cream.

As the shield wasnt high, I stood up, looked over. With them lying face-down, I could see their August 15, red but more glowing than the rubbed and treated faces of the other gals.

  131. Hi Shirley @ 168,

I am replying on Dolly’s behalf as she is out of Singapore now and unable to do so.

Please note Dolly’s comment @163 on 26 July that this trip is closed at 27 pax.

  132. Hahaha…Tim #169, thanks for clearing the mystery behind all those giggles – now I know what tickled those 2 guys.
Glad to note that they come out happy and glowing….hehehe

To all those who’re about to embark on the trip to Padang, enjoy yourselves and have a good time! Eat and be merry and don’t shop till you drop k? Things are really cheap over there esp. sandals, sarongs, avocado, lobsters and all….Rgds, Lisa

  133. Yes, Lisa, boys and boys and when we are away from our moms and wives/gfs, we really can and will play the fool but it’s all clean fun, at our age.

I join Lisa in wishing all you folks heading for Padang & Bt Tinggi in this 2nd trip a great time together. Do let yr hairs (no hair, pretend got hair) down and enjoy. Be as one body and it’s good to give a bit more than you take, and all will be well.

Look forward to reading what you people have to tell us after the trip.

  134. Lisa #167

Aiyo after having gone through the ‘sand paper’ treatment face sure look smooth and shinny mah…..also think my skin very thick so can take the ‘abuse’ hahahaha.

Like Lisa said, do not go for the package deal, sounds cheap but you don’t get the full benefit as they will be rushing through to get you done asap.

Hope you folks have a great time and safe holiday…no worries, just eat and come back then worry about your waistlie kekekekek

    Sockie

  135. Honey Ah Nee,

me again. Don’t say i amah, hor…your safety is my utmost concerned. Before you check-in into the hotel, make sure it is BumiMinang Hotel not BoyMIANG(ITCHYBoy)Hotel.Or else anybody can just simply climb over and peep under ok!!!!

    BON VOYAGE

    Rose White

  136. helo white rose..

U cakap2,don be amah…come again with us …then we all can go & hunt for itchyboys!…perhaps bring them to our party..mau tak?

Im now at Ahnee’s desk…she says, thanks for your concern.

With so many of us…we make sure she don astray to BoyMiang Hotel!

  137. Hi Shirley,
You reli put me in a lousy position whereby I had stated vry clearly that the registration was already closed in the previous comment. Even OiCheng helped me to reply but there is still no reply from u regarding this.

Only this morning, rec’d a bomb from Chin, I was told by Chin dat u had already booked your flight tkt without even consulting Chin first. Since Chin is the EO for this, he had the final say to accept ur participation n I hv no choice but 2 respect. But pls bear in the mind u will hv to take single room (pay d extra) and u will hv to take d back seat for sitting arrangement in order to be fair 2 others.

Hope this arrangement is fine wif u.

Chin, I hope that I won’t be receiving any surprise frm u anymore cos I had already got all logistics done and printed out. As I hv no printer at home rite now, I hv to go over to my bro’s home 2 print these out. Hence, ur kind understanding much appreciated. U cant afford 2b forever Mr Nice Man la.. vry stressed at my end, ok…

If these comments sound offensive den I am sorry abt this but bo bian, reli pek chek, so try to understand.. ok.. Dolly

  138. Aiyo poor missy Dolly…u so kesian..

Understand your ‘trauma’….we’ll be there & make u happy ok..u may have some of my lobster, its very nice & juicy..hehe..ooppss!..sori..just to sayang2 you only hor:)

  139. Wishing all 2nd Padang trippers a safe trip, happy time and relaxation!! Come back rejuvenated and recharged.

    Ivan, don’t forget your wasabi……….

  140. The 2nd Padang trippers must have touched down by now.

I dreamed of them last nite and in there, I was told that one has brought home a huge lobster for marriage. And there will be a grand dinner hosted for SHCians in celebration.

What happens in my dream normally happens in real life so let’s wait for the announcement……………….

  141. Dear EO Chin & CSM Dolly
I had a gr8 time & wanted to thank you for the organising that you did.
The group was a real barrel of laughs & I enjoyed myself immensely.
Thanks once again! :) Happy Camper

  142. Oh wow Andrew, you beat me to it..ha.ha.. Hope your lobster is alive & kicking..and hope you’ll have nice lobster dinner tonite aye?

Hi Chin, Dolly and assistant Ah Huat, thanks for all the hard work the last few days, making sure we have our lobster, avocados & kueh lapis. A very big “thank you” and I truly enjoyed myself.

It was a well organised trip with plenty of sight-seeing cum with loads of fun & laughter. Through it all, the most memorable ones were the time we went up & down the 44 curves to view the lake and the 136 steps up & down the Japanese tunnel. Yeah, we made it successfully for both. :)

Gtg now to see my new guests that came back with me….

    Cheers,
    Suzhang

  143. Hi Chin, Dolly and Sam

A big thank you for all the hard work in making this anenjoyable and funfilled trip.

We had great fun together and the bus journeys was ever so rowdy, especially the during the ride down and up the 44 curves (not sure if the noise was out of fear or thrill though!)

Chin was so quiet and shy on the first 2 days, but 3rd day onwards, he became as gila and talkative as the rest of us.

To everyone, thanks for the good time and company and don’t forget to send me the photos for uploading.

  144. Dear Padang trippers,

This trip was fantastic, very well organised. We have Chin, Dolly and assistance Ah Huat aka Ah Long to thank for. I enjoyed this trip entirely, so much fun & laughter.

The Lobsters which I had was still kicking after 3 hrs in the fridge. With my son’s help, I managed to clean it and steamed it for dinner. Wow! “sedap” lah……….., tomorrow, I make avocado juice for breakfast.

On the last night, I was a little unwell, so I slept early, But just after midnight, I heard Norlinda loud voice…..”I am alone you know”….”where is Jane”, “call her come up lah”…….Nor, what happened huh? You see #@&*! huh. hahaha..If I were you I “pengsan” already.

Oh ya, last night, we also “yum seng” & “huat huat” for a happy couple. heheheeee…….this trip should be a memorable one for them!

    Ah Nee

  145. Hi Chin,Dolly & not forgetting Sam(ah huat),

Thank you the well organised trip, my first time traveling with SHCians,I enjoyed every minute of it, the laughter, jokes and also the Padanish language spoken by our tour guide “Osman”.

First thing I did when I went home, I made a big tub of avocado drink for everyone at home, wow,, drinking the avocado juice feel so nice feel like I am still at Padang.

Oi Cheng,as for the photos & videos I will try to sent to you as soon as I can.

    good night Zzzzzzzzzzzz

    eileen thean

  146. “The Lobster…….was still kicking after 3 hrs in the fridge….with my son………Wow! “sedap” lah…..we also “yum seng” & “huat huat” for a happy couple. heheheeee…….”

So ANee, it was almost the whole truth that someone actually hooked up with a lobster but why did you keep her in a fridge and worst, kept yr son with her in there to be kicked? You said it’s sedap somemore. “Happy couple” maybe but it can also be a case of a very fierce daughter-IL in the making and if that will be sop it wont be heheheeee but you pun pee pee calling out for help………….

  147. Hi Chin, Dolly and Sam.

Thanks you so much for all the hard work, sacrifice and effort in making this 2nd Padang tour a great success. :)

It was a memorable trip for me and thanks to the wonderful companionship of SHCians esp.the “Gila” gang being the “live wire” of the company as we scream aloud when the bus maneuvers the 44 almost 90 deg bends.

Without them, the tour will be more subdue.

I was surprised that even Tian Soo whom many of us know him to be a serious guy, man of few words has the “lighter” side in him as well. I believe the “Gila” gang in us helps to relax him and he slowly opens up.

Norlinda, now you know why the Ecoman wants a single room so that no one can “kachau” him and hymm…… What’s cooking ?

Thanks also to Nor, Ah nee, Su Zhang, Andrew, Kristin,Mega,Renee,,etc… for accompanying me in our early morning walk at 6pm.at Bukit Tinggi/

Wow! The air was v.fresh and invigorating like Cameron highlands in this quiet and peaceful countryside of
Bkt. Tinggi will surely add many yrs. to our lives.

How I wish Spore has this kind of weather. :(

Looks like EO Chin has to scratch his head hard
and judging from the overall successful response
there may be another 3rd. trip to Padang ???

    To be continued…..Part 2.

  148. Hi all,

History has suddenly come alive. Now I know why the elegantly and beautifully shaped Minangkabau roofs are shaped like buffalo horns. To share with others, our “backside” tour guide Osman told us that Minangkabau comes from 2 jointed words.Minang-Indo ( Menang-M’sian) means to win and kerbau means water buffalo.

Together it means victorious water buffalo , a symbol for victory. Even the women tribal headgear are shaped like water buffalo horns too.

In Padang province, the women has the upper hand. Women can only earn the assets and properties but not the man. That’s explain why many of the man “chabut” to other places where this traditional rule is not practised.

My nephew and I ate the fresh sashimi lobsters we ordered last night but too small for our appetite as there was not enough supply of BIG lobsters .

If only the size of the lobsters we ate was as BIG as the ones each of us was served in the Padang restaurant with Karaoke facilities.

Andrew and Ivan Lim were happily “dissecting” away the lobsters BIG head for their chunky meat. After our dinner, we continue to thoroughly enjoyed ourselves with Karaoke solo and sing along songs.

At Padang Panjang , Norlina and Andrew Thio had a traditional Minangkabau style “unofficial” marriage witness by SHCians.

Finally,at another restaurant we toasted to
another happy couple ” Yum Seng ” :)

So Tim, now you know the story better.
    “Unofficial Marriage”between HUMANS NOT LOBSTERS.Ha!ha! :)

  149. “Norlina and Andrew Thio had a traditional Minangkabau style “unofficial” marriage witness by SHCians”. And henceforth we shall pronounce them as Man and Whiff (of a wife). Whatever, it looks like Andrew will have to think hard about adopting a new name such as the famous mas s’lamat, like Masked Alamak Andrew.

But, Steven, other than the 2 marriages yopu witnessed there, didnt you read about what ANee brought home for her son? Arent you curious why she put them both in the fridge?

Love at 1st sight is common but what was uncommon was, they loved so hot that ANee had to put them in the ice-box but even then, they continued kicking and loving. But no worry, ANee said it was sedap and they’re a happy couple……….

  150. Charles-W, I was lucky to have a preview of the fotoss.

In one, I saw seated at a dining table were SHCians peeling avocados for lobsters who had their pincers high in the air clapping.

In another, 2 guys were kneeling on a bed and in the middle was a lobster, so red, you cant miss it. That cooked crustacean was pinched from the restaurant and, by praying, they hoped to revive it for some fun.

  151. Hi Tim,

…I was lucky to have a preview of the fotoss.???

You must have been day dreaming.

The Padang/Bkt. Tinggi photos are still not out yet
at the main post.I just checked.

  152. Tim – haha. not sure it will be Masked Alamak Andrew if my wife knows of it! (didnt tell her about that)

From what I did describe she said that it sounded like her kind of trip: Food, Fun, Shopping! Well at least she got to a taste of some of the food.

Charles/Tim – some of the funnier pics might get censored so you might have to seek out the photograpers individually ;)

  153. I am sure everybody in the 2nd trip to Padang and Bkt Tinggi had enjoyed their time in this 4D3N adventure on food and tour and lots of fun.

I want to thank Dolly for assisting me in coordinating the trip and keeping the group in order so that we have utilised the time fully. Indeed we have done so many things in so little time. I want to convey my appreciation to the participants for their cooperation and high spirit to make the trip is fun and enjoyable for everyone.

Not to forget to thank Sam also for he helps Dolly to collect and tally the money and run all sorts of errands.

Thanks to Andrew, Suzhang, Bira, Oi Cheng, Ah Nee, Eileen and Steven for their compliments.

Steven #189, The 44 turns are 180 degrees u-turn going down or up. If you sit in front of the bus and the bus is rushing up and seem to crash to the retaining wall at the cliff but sway away at the last minute, i think you heart will fall out. Unfortunately Bira was sitting beside me but she didn’t scream and hold me tight. I was waiting for her to do that. ai!!!

James, can you put up the photo in flickr in this blog so that others can share the joy and fun we had during the trip.

  154. My dear Chin,

“Unfortunately” I was not the lady who sat beside you during the 44 turns, otherwise, I’d have hold you ‘very very tight’…..our gila gang were at the ‘backside’ oopps.. back seats….so will there be another chance ????

  155. “Unfortunately Bira was sitting beside me but she didn’t scream and hold me tight. I was waiting for her to do that”.

When Bira drives, she likes to play with the gear to control the car speed. So if she had held you tight and do the reverse gear to brake, your gear wd break. So do you still think it was unfortunate?

Btw, she doesnt like to scream……she likes ice cream, not those served in a cup but the long round type she can hold to lick and nibble. Hee, Hee.

  156. So many work emails to clear after back from Padang but better late than never to post my “Thank You” note to

    1. Chin for being a caring and an accomodating EO
    2. Dolly, the efficient coordinator
    3. Ah Long ge always cheerful and helpful, sometimes troublsome.

Despite of the higher fare that i have paid to Tiger, the “siow” group make this trip so enjoyable and memorable. It was a well-deserved break for me.

    Steven #189
I don’t know “who” you were with at 6pm? Definitely, not us – Andrew, Kristin and myself.
We were with you from 6am – 7:30am accompanying Ah Pui for his “TAF” program and Tian Soo, the new EO for the walk.

    Andrew #195
You will probably become “Omaka” if your wife knows about it.
The 2 happy couples make “vows” in the presence of 20+ shcians as their witnessess and thrown a reception in the
    evening. Yum..yum..yum..sheng!;)

    Chin #196
The front seat was supposedly meant for the VIP but the VIP has moved to the “backside” to rub “Mian Kia Eu”.
Left me a chance to feel the adrenaline rush with the last 8 bends, though was short but enjoyed the roller
    coaster ride.

    Tim #198
Ice-cream? Ask Ah Long ge what is it taste like in front of the Mayor office.

To add thrill and excitement, we have also found a “lobang” king for Tongkat Ali, encountered the tsunami,
the escape route of Indiana Zones and the Fatal Attraction in Grand Canyon.

Who said “we are silverhairs” in fact, we are a bunch of rowdy teens.

The photos are in the assembly line for some finishing touches – ready to deliver after this weekend.

    Stay tuned! :)

  157. My dear Bira #197, we don’t need another chance to go to 44 bends in order for you to hold me very very tight. You can hold me very very tight anywhere, anytime.

  158. After the 4D/3N at Padang / Bukit Tinggi, we get to acquaint Chin better, never know the cheeky side of him.

Dear Chin, beside Bira, many gals also want to hold you very tight leh…hehehe….you such a nice Mr. Guy, so caring & accommodating. Your sincerity of wanting to change my hotel room to a better view has really touched my heart.

And this……on the last night, you asked Renee & me to order other menu when you noticed we have no appetite for nasi padang…..really appreciate your concern for us!

Chin & all the Padang Trippers do join us cycling cum BBQ on the 15 Aug (Sat) at East Coast Park……for another “siow siow” & hilarious nite! Cheers :)

    Ah Nee

  159. Ah Nee #201,
Yes, I will bring my video, hope there’s a TV at the chalet, so we can see the crazy moment we have after eating those lobsters,,,, Remember Richard holding a straw for all of you to dance through & the singing,,, it was real fun & merry that evening..

    eileen

  160. Yippeee….Eileen will show us the “crazy moment” at the Padang Karaoke restaurant on the cycling cum BBQ nite.

Yew Kwong, please include Eileen. Calling the rest…….this is the nite, a nite of fun..laughter…& plenty of JOKES…guaranteed you laugh until “pengsan”…

All Padang goers r fun luving n I definitely wun mind joining all of u 2 another location 4 holi again..

But, wuld like 2 clarify sum doubts cast by sum members regarding lobster. I m sure dat most of them had paid lesser 4 lobsters, dat is cos, the shipment supposed 2 arrive, did not landed as planned according 2 d supplier, hence, he hv 2 make do wif his existing stock 2 service our order. But d oli setback is dat, he failed 2 infm us earlier so dat sum of u will hv d option 2 buy or not 2 buy, rite..Chin..

Packaging of avocado was oso pathetic sight upon arrival in SG. I saw sum members practically throwing away these away as they were crushed in2 pcs. Chin, ustnd no fault of ur but maybe u shd feedback 2 tese suppliers on this hiccups.

Nevertheless, tose who need clarificatins, pls do not hesitate 2 let Chin or me noe so that we can address separately via emails in order not jam this forum, ok…Dolly

  162. Ah Nee, JamesT sent us via email photos taken by him. You can see some video shots… one being Richard holding the straw and SusanT, Oi Cheng, etc. doing the limbo rock…ha.ha… it must be this night that emerge the new Chin…LOL.

  163. Hi, just want to register my thanks to the EO + assistant EO + her side-kick Ah Huat for maximising/keeping the time that we have for this trip. Thanks to all fellow trippers for the fun and laughter which cannot easily be expressed in written words……A Great and Memorable Trip.

  166. Hi Renee/Norlinda,

Sorry! Ya lah 6AM not 6pm. Typo error.

    Hi Norlinda,

…( Marriage Ceremony we hv to pay Rp35,000 each!…
    35, 000 Rupiah = abt. S$5.00 )
    (V. cheap lah mana boleh dapat.
In Spore, you have to pay thousands of dollars and so Andrew Thio can afford to marry 4 “wives” ( just by sungat ) SENANG sahaja provided Norlinda agree to it. Boleh?
Malaysia Boleh! Awak pun boleh! Ha! ha! :)

THANKS once again to ALL the PADANG trippers and you all made it a memorable one for me.

  170. Hope I am not the last to write to the post. Was down with a bad flu the last few days. Probably the haze is back.

Would like to say a big “Thank You” to our EO Chin, Dolly the Co-Ordinator and not forgetting Sam, huat ah, huat ah, the jolly guy.

The Padang tour was great. There were so much hilarity in the bus. Our day would started and ended with fun and laughter. That make a memorable holiday.

I enjoyed the nasi padang and the avocado/passion fruit juice. Sightseeing like the market visit bring back memory of the old spore day. The visit to the museum is very culture and some fun and laughter were added and enjoyable when 2 of our members act/play, making the episode-culture and fun. Both of them are very spotting adding liveliness to the tour. Perhap both of them can be the next EO to arrange costume fun play game ya, hehehe.

I had a wonderful time and also in the company of SHCians. (Nor and Bira, I get it right this time ya, hehehe)

Thank you everyone for a memorable 4D/3N in Padang. Cheers.

    Lin

  171. Hi Lin Chuah,

You are definitely not the last, haha. I am after you. But it is better to be late than never.

Hi Mr Chin, Dolly & Sam,

A ‘BIG THANK YOU’ to you for organising this wonderful trip, so memorable and enjoyable.

Thanks also goes to Oi Cheng, for the effort posting the fotos in the website.

3 Cheers to all, Yip yip hurray!

    Susan Tan

  172. Rene..
Alamak!..ya la..cos their physique looks the same,so susah my memory in the morning a little off!..hehe

    Lin@214
We had so much fun hor!..luckily u din cancel the trip, with our sayang2 persuasion, u followed!..look fwd to our next outing,3 of us can bunk in a room, lagi gila!!,rite Bira?..haha

Forgot! Thanks to Arthur & Peggy for giving each of us Tiger Balm oitment on the 1st day!..it came in handy with members when some mabok & headache on the 44 turns!…hhhmmm, wonder how come they foresee such events ah?

  173. WHEW! Near 1000 photos finally uploaded.

Had originally prepared 2 albums but the 2nd album was giving some problem as only empty boxes appear after uploading. Had to re-upload each set of photographer’s pictures to see which set was the cause. Finally, concluded that I had to break up the album further so here you are 3 albums in all.

The last couple of days while going through the photos, was contemplating if certain photos should be uploaded. After much deliberation, decide I should not let my own conservativeness stand in the way so out they go.

Hope all you viewers out there will enjoy and laugh along with us at the crazy fun we had on the trip.

    Happy viewing!

Now I can go zzzzzz! night night!

Oops, sorry, please do search on padang then scroll to bottom of post for links to the 3 albums.

Terence, you should be able to find a picture for your next banner.

  174. Hi Padangnites,

Many Thanks to all the photographers Sam,Eileen Thean, James Tan,Peggy n Arthur Yap, Norlinda, Daisy Yeo, Richard, and Mega etc… who have taken such BEAUTIFUL shots of our 4D/3N Padang n Bkt. Tinggi tour.

…. ( if certain photos should be uploaded ????.
After much deliberation, decide I should not let my own conservativeness stand in the way so out they go. )

Yes, Oi Cheng good that you relax the STRICT censorship rules :-

Its how and what our mind perceives as OBSCENE or CANDID all in the name of FUN as long as we pose FULLY CLOTHED and not NAKED!

I couldn’t help laughing to myself in ALBUM 2 some photos that may seem OBSCENE but were pose in a CANDID manner.

    Ha ! ha! :)

  175. Hi Oi Cheng and Chin, and everybody,

I just finished looking at all the pictures in Album 1. Fingers already tired flipping through the phots. This has really been a very exciting trip. Could see Ivan, James, Tian Soo and Richard very visible enjoying the trip. While going through the pictures in Album 1, I noticed some very nice pictures. Ah Huat and Dolly, you both really look good, posing next to one another another. I have heard that both of you make great live-wires.

Oi Cheng, this picture upload must be a record, with 1,000 pictures. I am sure I will find a nice picture for our website banner, once I reach album 3.

    Terence Seah

  176. Steven #219

I really enjoy viewing the pictures on the Padang trip though did not join the trip.

Special mention on a couple of pictures posted. In Album 2
where Steven as he said fully clothed and enjoying the free
mouth massage from Sam Goh. Sorry Steven, if you are naked Sam and you will be charged by the the Padang police for outraging modesty.

TimL, all your suggestive postings pale in comparison to Steven and Sam’s unique action of gratification. As the saying goes ” A picture is worth a thousand words “…HAHAHA!

Steven and Sam are now the celebrities of SHC. Well done over !

  177. Hi Patrick Lee @ Don Juan @ comments 219 and 221,

This is our latest SHC’s Spore’s version of “Lust Caution” explicitly shot outside the MinahKerbau Palace.

It is an Artistic movie Rated R21.For ” FULLY 100% matured” audiences only.

Luckily, there was no security guards around otherwise they will be very unhappy and angry of we “GILA” gang making a mockery of the Royal Palace.

  178. Hi Patrick Lee @ Don juan,

How is your coffee today at Coffee Club with an elegant, tall, sophisticated and NO nonsense smiling lady and others etc… ?

Aiyah! You only offered FREE drinks to ladies and make guys pay and called yoursef a buddy ? How unfair? :(

Next time, I will come in revealing blouse ,short skirt and high heels to be entitled for a free drink. tio boh !

    Ha! ha! :)

  179. Steven, piah seh leh. Could not contribute to photo albums cause deleted all my photos by mistake. Highlighted some of my old photos to delete but deleted all instead.

Wow! Most of the photos were real good and special compliments to those in album 1.

Sockie, all the photographers used digital cameras. You might want to recruit C.K. to the photographers’ club.

Did not see the photo of me, Bapah Ivan and another couple, who ugh? Was it Oi Cheng and CK? Sensored ugh?

  180. Steven, you very blur la.. Other than Eileen, photographer in album 3, all others that you thanked did not contribute to the albums. Sigh.. never read what I wrote on top of the albums har?

Daisy, who is CK har? Or do you mean CJ?

Most photos are uploaded, only deleted when they appear similar as too many already. I do see you and Ivan in album 1, how come you didn’t see? Try the other 2 albums contributed by Kristin, Rene and Eileen.

  181. Hi Oi Cheng,

    Not blur like sotong.

As long as he or she brings along his/her camera for the trip and started shooting,I will assume that they too have contributed their part in the Albums.

You could have co-ordinated them and compile them in 3 separate Albums.

That is my assumption. Tio boh… hah ha ! :) follow Dolly and Sam ways of Ah Beng/Ah Liang Singlish expressions.

Anyways, thanks again Oi Cheng for uploading the photos of our memorable trip.

  182. U are rite of course, Oi Cheng! CJ it should be and not CK. Apologies.

Perhaps we are referring to different photos, Oi Cheng.

It was a pleasure viewing all the photos. Thanks for all the hard work.

  183. Naughty, naughty, Tian Soo.

The fact is, am still waiting to be carried by u know who. Don’t think the person will have the strength though. Ha ha ha………..

  184. Dear Padng kakis,

We were lucky to escape the earthquake measuring 6.9 when
we were in Padang 2 weeks ago.

    http://www.monstersandcritics.com/news/asiapacific/news/article_1495669.php/Earthquake-jolts-Indonesia-s-West-Sumatra-injuring-four-Roundup

Four ppl were injured due to falling debris at a shopping
mall. Wonder whether anyone can pinpoint why shopping center
in Padang so that we can avoid that area during the next
    visit.

Thanks to Chin for the planning. Hope he had seeked God for
    our protection.

    james

  185. I think that with 1000 pictures taken during the Padang trip, it will be a sin if I do not put up some nice pictures on our website banner. I shall try to do a few this week. Please refresh your browser.

    Terence Seah

  186. Oh my…I like the new banner picture. It’s worth a thousand words! I also like the third party – that sweet-looking carrot!

TQ, Terence for the surprise selection. You must have got clearance first, right? lol!

  187. After the above banner picture has been put up, I have heard many good news about the couple. To be honest with most of you, I have been away most of the time, and rarely get to hear good news or happenings of SHC groups in Singapore.

Last night, I was pleased to see Sam and Dolly together, hand in hand, without the carrot. You can tell they are happy through the sparkle in their pupils. Let’s wish them all the best. And thanks to Chin, the Padang trip tells it all. And to JamesT and Jassmine for the supportive words.

    Terence Seah

  188. Spot on Sengh !

I know Dolly long enough to say that she’s a amiable, unpretentious and straightforward gal who seeks to do her best for friends and devoted to friendship. Without a doubt, ah Huat aka Sam is a blessed man and I am sure, one and all in SHC will want to wish them happiness and more.

This also brings to mind another great couple made in SHC. Dan and Joy too are an impeccable match whom we will have only well wishes for them.

Sengh, dont pout. Sorry, you can only hold and hug the coconuit tree till Mrs Sengh comes to take you home and of cos she’s worth so much to wait for.

  189. Hi Tim #236

S’pore birthrate is declining. SHC needs observant guys like TimL to set up the matching unit officially with confidential data of individuals’ pte profile to do a computer matching and hence meeting of compatible couples.
So much cheaper than having to go on trips to get hooked up.

See TimL, I always take my hat off for you. Get the balls rolling. So it will enter the hollow-gram.

Ah Huat and Ah Dol, Dan and Joy….Whose next? Make hay while the sun shines. Time and tide waits for no silverhairs
    going to botakhairs. Hahaha!

  190. Hi Tim,

How about you and your young sweet thing you brought along
    at the BBQ last Sat?

I believe she needs a good introduction by you to all the
    curious SHCians.

    james

  191. halo halo ,,, bro terence ,tim liu james jassmine,,,

kam siah jway jway 4 all of yr blessing lor…
will work extra hard lol 2 it…

& now aso must kong kam siah 2 our pdg troop, since sgt major oredli @ china 4 wk hor !!! 4 u all able 2 stand my nonsence & dirty joke @ tx….

i really hor ,,,enjoy it,,,thks 2 bro chin our almost botak EO la….cheers & HUAT HUAT HUAT

  192. Haha, James-T, can a grandmother be too young?

She’s almost my height and so we stand equal. That’s very good for a start. Obviously, she doesnt like my smoking but said nothing but still thought I smell good (altho her nose got runny). That was love speaking its loudest.

When she puts on a straight face, good counsel follows. And she takes the trouble to shop and cook for me…….yes, to some, what’s the big deal but tto me who has not eaten home-cooked food, it is BIG DEAL.

Not least, it is grossly an understatement if I say she cares for me.

“SHC needs……TimL to set up matching unit…….I always take….off for you. Get the balls rolling….”

Well, Patrick-L, I am really very keen to set up a matching service whereby either I match you with someTHING or ask you to man my shop and do the matching. Whichever, it will be a happy day, riotous as well, when strange things or animals come to be born with you keeping your promise of taking your balls off to roll.

  193. Terence #235

Yeah Yeah perhaps we will be having our first SHC wedding soon huh :0) and I can bet this may be the nosiest wedding we will ever have with Sam going Huat Huat Huat. Dolly tiok bo ;0) When the day come hor I will volunteer to be your photographer….so I better hury hurry go brush up my skills liao

I must say both are the life of the party on their own and together WOW mo tak theng neh kekekekekek.

To Ah Huat and Obasan, I am so glad that you’ve have found each other and our blessings to you both for a happy life together.

    Sockie

  194. To answer our inquisitive giraffe StevenC about the carrot in the wallpaper picture. What does it signify?

Well StevenC, Ah Huat’s psychology of dangling the carrot to Ah Doll works to a T. Hence it is a reminder that any SHC guys wanting to pursuit his interest on a SHC beauty should hold a carrot with a stick dangling from his back.
This miracle always works on Bugs Bunny. Surprised it work on Dolly. Really, Ah Huat, in hokkien “loo chin aa sai” and
in cantonese “lei hai tak ke”.

I should learn this technic in my younger days, to save so much money on dating which the guys always pay.

Carrots can be bought in NTUC, Sheng Shiong, everywhere and so cheap. Carrot is the in-thing now for hitching. Hahahaa!

  195. halo steven # 244 ,,,

  196. Aiyoh! Ah Huat, loo kong si me, Wa leir bo q. Er sai kong ang mo wei bo. Wa chia kang tang er lang. Si beh chia lat leh, (to read your message.)

Translation: Ah Huat, what are you talking, I catch no balls. Can talk english or not. I eat potatoes man (means english inclined). Very tough to read your message.

Too much saliva from Ah Doll, already. Write also same same style. Hahahahahaaaa!

  197. Patrick,
Surprised dat u compared me wif bug bunny, is it suppose 2b compliment or insult, I reli wander. Just 2 let u noe, pay system still din chnge even .. guys still pay for date dun care whether anot past or present n I doubt very much it will change in the future. So u c, there is no tactic 2 learn. Btmline, payment must come frm d heart n not so calculative.

Steven, FYI, try spelt carrot wif another meaning n I m sure u will noe wat carrot meant in this pic. ok… Dolly

  198. Dolly,
Tks for thinking of me from Hainan. It is a compliment. I tell you why. During my Don Juan days and my good look, I was a lady-killer. Hahaha! Why the beauties flock to me was because I always carry a fat wallet and never dangle a carrot like Ah Huat did. You are such a sweet and simple girl. I can’t see the significance why a carrot can entice you. Just joking lah!

So much so that when I married, I was forced to bluff my wife with a one carat zircon ring in place of the real one. (Spent most of my cash on wine, women, song. Hahaha!) To this day after 34 years my sweet simple wife is still wearing the zircon as the real diamond, phew! Please do not blackmail me. Can’t imagine she still cannot find out.

Today’s world, women are a force to be reckoned. Many are richer than the guys. So, the tradition of the guys always pay bears no substance. The chancellor of Germany, the prime minister of New Zealand, etc are all women.

So women have arrived. Don’t play play OK!!

  199. Hi Sam Goh,

  201. Hi Patrick DJ,

I still felt that SAm Huat’s technique of dangling a lovely sweet carrot in front of Dolly is more sincere than you dangling a ZIRCONITE.

    Ha! ha! :)

….Terence, mayb is time 2 take out tis pic 2 replace wif a new 1 oredi, rite.. much appreciated.. Thanks.. Dolly

Ai yah Dolly n Sam Huat, the picture was just placed a few days ago. I like to see the natural SWEET smiles from both of you as a “matching” Singlish cum Hokienish couple.

    “For Your Eyes Only” :)

  202. Hi Patrick ( DJ )/ Geraldine Lee (HK),

You do like this to SHCians , it is like the story of the boy who cried “wolf”

And so whatever you had said , even when in actual fact is TRUE = UNTRUE.( and so your Diamond is doomed to
    become a Zirconite ) ha! ha ! :)

If I was as intelligent and suspicious as your wife or even more so , I would have “KOREK” and “PESTER” you day and night till you drop DEAD to buy for me a BLUE DIAMOND with VSS Grade 1 that comes with GIA Certification.

Now Lei “Cham”! not Charm and I made DEAD sure you buy for me until you POOK KAI.

Pls. reply.(Geraldine, Moe Fong Kor Hue Yee kor Lor Hum Sum Choong ).

Speak your mind and give him a BLAST! :)
Time to Poh Soew ! ha! ha! :)
    Thanks.

  203. Our Padang scenary get to the front page!..
wah!…still vivid sweet memories while we were there,so fun!…remember the avocado juice, lobster, durians & nasi padang..just superb!

  204. Hi Steven,

All my scoldings when Patrick L was here in April obviously are forgotten plus the spanking with my spiked gloves (he loved it. Kekekekeee). Patrick L is Patrick L. As far as I am concerned only 1% of him is adorable…………..what can I say except to pray for him.

‘Moe Fong Kor Hue Yee kor Lor Hum Sum Choong’. Kakkaaaaaka. I had to read it twice to decipher what you meant. Now the correction – Mm hoe fong gor hooi, lei kor lor hum sup choong.

Continue with you HK series. Will certainly help to improve your cantonese.

  205. Wee Chin has organised two memorable trips to Padang and Bukit Tinggi in West Sumatra, for SilverHairsClub. Sock Cheng has made this event still fresh in our minds. I wonder what has happened to Padang since the earthquake.

Here’s what Sockie has to share with us in this video clip. And, Wee Chin, if the video inspires you to do another trip, we look foward to hearing from you. The video clip is on the top left of this website.

    Terence Seah

  206. Best for Chin to clarify here but with all due respect, I think Chin’s full name is Chin Hee Weng i.e. name is Hee Weng and surname is Chin.

Hey Chin! You’ve been missing in action? We’ve graduated to Changi now for our cycling. Entirely different scenes now. Come join us the next time. Ooops….. hope don’t get clobbered by EOs for making premature decisions on their behalf.
