What I will be doing over the Christmas and New Year holidays?

In the next few days, I shall be flying to Bangkok, and begin a 10 day holiday, travelling Central Thailand.  Joining me will be my wife Nok and son Alex, Mary, Stephen and grandson Julyan.  Also a Thai family whose son is likely to study in Perth together with my son in 2011.  On Christmas day, early morning, we will drive to Phrae, and then westwards to Tak, near the Burmese border.  Along the way, we will stay in cool mountain resorts, river houses, and villagers houses.  It’s the time of the year, where we visit villagers and give toys and clothes away.

Christmas isnt widely celebrated in provincial Thailand, but the year end mood just catches on with the rich and poor, young and old.  Pently of drinking, singing, dancing and eating.  We shall finally reach Korat, North East Thailand where we will head for the rice fields, and celebrate my father-in-law’s 88th birthday.  It’s a poor village, where food is mainly leaves from the trees, fishes from the ponds and chickens running around the back of the house.

I am back on Jan 4, but I shall give you some live commentaries along the way.

  17. SHCians are encouraged to write their travel trips and share their experience nnd adventure with other SHCians on this forum.

On Xmas day, 5am, we got into a 11 seater van, from IBIS Bkk hotel and haeader north towards Singburi and Nakon Sawan. Along the way, we stopped at a famous breakfast point to have very tasty pig’s organs soup with rice.

The kids loved it when we arrived at Chainat’s Bird park. Here, there are plenty of birds, although most are man-made. Chainat has an acquarium, showcasing all thai fishes. Toured a giant netted bird santuary.

Stopped at the huge Lake Moraphet to enjoy the scenery, and had lunch at a floating restaurant on the lake iteself. A large bottle of beer for $1.50, plua a giant tilaphia or $2 and all local food.

Finaly, the drive to Uttaraddit national resort, arriving 6pm. Set amidst a natural forest reserve, we arrived at the floating hotel on a lake where the water is still and one can see the reflection of the trees and the mountains. After dinner, our families occupied 3 floating units, out of 5 available units. Full facilities, owned by the Thai government. I am enjoying the cool morning breeze, and waiting to have my breakfast.

  18. Very interesting Terence, love this sort of adventure.
It reminds me of our campervaning in Perth where we drove from Perth to Albany(approx 500km}.Along the way there were many wineries, cheese factory, parks, dead kangaroos….hehe.

Would love to explore and learn more about Thailand from you when we meet sometime.

  19. Hi DanielK #23,

Other than Bangkok, Thailand has many beautiful places to visit and relax. Yes, when we next meet, we can chat all about Thailand.

And, hi everybody, this trip across central Thailand continues. Yes, we left the floating hotel, got our breakfast of delicious pork soupy porridge, and headed off to the next province Phrae. A mountainous area with plenty of tall teak trees, refreshing rivers and soothing waterfalls.

Along the way, we stopped to explore an area where hills and stones are carved out into shapes by wind and rain. The kids were excited to see large shapes of tall penis and different size mushrooms.

When we arrived at Phrae city, we bought vegetables to cook for the night. As we entered into the National Park, one can see camping areas, rest points, bridges and chalets large enough to take big thai families. Our Thai friends had brought along cooking gear, and we had a great Tom Yam prawn soup.

The chalet had 4 bedrooms, nestled among trees, a waterfall and running stream. Hmm, good sleep, temp 28C.

  20. Hi Terence,

Hope to meet up with you soon.

Too bad you will not be around on New year’s eve, my band is performing at The Grassroots Club in Yio Chu Kang.

Those keen to drop by please do.

    Daniel

  21. Sawadee-cup Khun Terence, trust that by now; you and group should be in Korat. How’s korat? It’s been more than 20years since I was last there …… at the expenses of our Chenghu. Dun think that the “night-club-streets” there are the same anymore ….. had a few wild memories there but no pictures for the album …..

  22. Hi Danny,
So nice to see your name on this thread. It’s been a while since I caught up with you and Ping. Pls convey my regards to her and here’s wishing you both, Good Health, Happiness and Prosperity for the coming New Year 2010! Best wishes, Lisa

  23. Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the wishes.Yes it’s been awhile.
Ping is recovering from her fractured ankle.Do give us a call when you come over so we cam meet for some makan.

    Wishing you a prosperous 2010.

    Ping and Daniel

  24. Hi DanielK,

I was hoping to see you when you performn at the Grassroots club at Yeo Chu Kang. I missed it again this time.

Well, it seems that some of the National Parks where I went to over the holidays, there were no internet access. Managed to get to the extreme west Tak, which is close to the Burma. Then, over to Sukhothai, and finally at Ayuthaya. Transit in Bangkok for a night before heading to Nakon Ratchashima.

Today, we head back to Bangkok, and I should be back in Singapore on Monday. Gee, it has been a long holiday. Guess you had your fun too.
