Cycling for Jul & Aug 2010

1. Sat, 17 Jul 10 – no cycling

2. Sat, 21 Aug 10 – cycling in Sentosa (coincides with monthly gathering)

Cyclists must bring their own bikes. Not sure if there is bike rental in Sentosa.

Meet at open space outside Vivo City at 2 p.m. Registration is required.

3. Sat, 28 Aug to Sun 29 Aug 10 – Pengarang (choice of 1 nite stay)

Refer to below for details. Option – 1 nite stay

Meet at Changi Ferry Point Terminal (same place as departure by bumboat to Pulau Ubin) at 8 a.m. Depart for Pengarang at 8.15 a.m. sharp. Registration is required.

Specially caters for 1st time cyclists to Malaysia. Others are welcome to join.

Restricts to 1 boat of 13 or whatever confirmed number. Cost of charter will be shared out. Normal charge : $9 per person. Bike fee : $2 per bike.

PENGARANG

It’s an area at the southeastern tip of Johor, to the south of Desaru. The name is usually used to cover the dock and immigration post at Pengarang, the village of Kampong Pengilih and the town of Sungai Rengit.

Going there by boat
Sungei Rengit is 17km from Tanjong Pengilih Ferry Terminal, the landing point where you arrive by ferry from Singapore.
Bumboats shuttle from Singapore’s Changi Point Ferry Terminal to Pengarang from 7am in the morning, first ferry service to 4pm in the afternoon, last ferry service. The journey takes about an hour and costs $9 per person, plus $2 for a bicycle.

Sightseeing
Pengarang was the site of a major WW2-era British coastal battery. The part of it at Pengilih, right next to the immigration point, is open to the public but in a state of nature, with no trails, signs, etc.
Chinese temples are quite common sight. There is one particular one which houses a large Goddess of Mercy guarding its entrance.
There is also an Ostrich Farm, one you don’t get to see in Singapore breeding about 300 ostriches. For a small price, you get to taste ostrich egg, satay, soup and meat.

Bicycle rental
Will rent them from bicycle shop at Changi Village @ S$10 for whole day. Helmets, good if u have your own otherwise will rent them at $?.

What to buy
Chinese pastries in are popular souvenirs. Many people are tempted to bring home in quantities.

Eating
Many popular Chinese restaurants serving delicious seafood offer mouth-watering signature dishes. There are also the nightly food stalls selling crunchy Ramly burgers, and irresistible char kuey teow.

Staying overnight
Hotels here may not be your best but are fine just for resting for the night. MYR30 per person on twin/triple sharing.

  3. According to a forum there are bicycles for rental on Sentosa. Here are the info:

On Sentosa Island — There are several rental places near Siloso Beach off Siloso Road, a short walk from Underwater World. There’s a kiosk at Sakae Sushi (tel. 65/6271-6385) and another at Costa Sands (tel. 65/6275-2471). Both are open 7 days from around 10am to 6:30 or 7pm. Rental for a standard bicycle is S$5 (US$3.35/£2.25) per hour. A mountain bike goes for S$8 (US$5.35/£3.60) per hour. Identification is required.

  10. Hi YK,

Hear tat u may change the meeting point at 2pm (SHARP)from “Open-space” outside Vivo City to Bike Rental Kiosk near to Palawan Beach, Sentosa on 21Aug2010 ….. GOOD IDEA!! The Sentosa Express Beach Station, the Sentosa Bus Blue Line can all reach the location with ease – please note that to reach Bike Rental Kiosk; a short walk is to be expected…….

  11. Yew Kwong,

I am taking a few days off from work and may visit Sentosa with my son this Thursday. We plan to spend a day there, so I can reccee the island for the coming cycling event.

I think we should have 2 options: 1) Cycling cum Bitch party and 2) Those who want to cycle round the island only. For the convenience of the party goers, I will get back to you on the rental of bicycle kiosk near the Pelawan beach. Hope there is one there.

    Ah Nee

  12. Hi Ah Nee

Generally, I intend to schedule – 1) Those who need to rent bikes will assemble at bike kiosk at 2 pm. 2) Those riding on their own bikes will meet at 1.30 pm outside Vivo City and ride into Sentosa to meet the rest at bike kiosk.

I will put up the post for Cycling at Sentosa together with Cycling to Sg Rengit, Pengarang likely on Wed after tonight’s recce.

Perhaps you can also check out on interesting places where we can stop and view nice scenery, taste good food and watch monkeys.

    Appreciate and thanks.

  13. Hi Yew Kwong, this is my findings at Sentosa yesterday….

Going to Sentosa these days is very expensive after the Resort World opened its door to the world, especially on the Bikes rental. Luckily my son and I, have our foldable Bikes to move around / along the Beaches for half a day. It is safe and FUN to cycle along the Beaches & enjoyed the sea breeze…. But am thinking of how you are going to organize this cycling trip, some have their own Bikes, some without Bikes and rental of Bikes at Siloso Beach only….

Entrance to Sentosa by Car –

Mon to Fri: $6.00; Sat / Sun /PH: $7 (per car entry)

Central Beach Car parking lots charges –

Mon to Fri: 7.00 am to 7.00 pm ($3 for first 4hrs and $1 per hr thereafter); 7.00 pm onwards ($1 per entry)

Sat / Sun /PH: 7.00 am to 7.00 pm ($5 for first 4hrs and $2 per hr thereafter); 7.00 pm onwards ($2 per entry)

Rental of Bicycles along the Beaches (Siloso Beach – Palawan Beach – Tanjong Beach)

Bicycles rental shop is available at Siloso Beach only and is open from 9.30 am – 7.30 pm:

    1st hour – $12
    2nd hour – $8
    Full day rental – $40

    Ah Nee

  14. Oh ya..continue…

Rental of Bikes at Siloso Beach, will include a helmet for the stated rates. Who want to wear their helmets? so smelly & sweaty….hehehe…

    Ah Nee
