Abang, got lobang?

Most of us have at one time or another need some kind of help or services. It would be good to express it here on this post to reach out to fellow members.

I have previously started a a similar post in 2009 and many of you have share with us your experiences. This time round I have a couple from India coming for a two week stay and looking for a room or a small flat to rent for a fee. They are my old client but good friend now. They will arrive on January 3. Anyone have a lobang or know of anyone who can help. Whatever fee I collected, 30% will go toward a SHC Fund, how dat?

  1. I have two Japanese lady teachers looking to rent a common or master room separately. Budget $1k, anyone got lobang? Needed by first week of January 2013 for a year lease.

Terence, I am suggesting a fund to sustain the cost of maintaining this blog. I am sure those who need to advertise their business would invest in a token sum for the greater good.

So far you are the godfather, godmother and the fairy godmother for keeping this post alive. What happen if some of us take over your mantle, some form of fund is needed to keep it going.

Collecting revenue from advertising here on this blog is legitimate, why waste such an instrument of generating fund?

  2. Hi Dan and members,

The fleamart Post maintained by Jassmine is a place where we enable members to earn income for their services. This is personal ads, and is free.

Members may also join as Corporate members. They should refer to admin@SilverHairsClub.com. Free Corporate membership was offered to members earlier but there were few takers, ends 31 Dec 2012. You did not join as a Corporate member.

SilverHairsClub cannot allow members to advertise their services to members, and selling their products and services using the Club’s name for financial benefits. The Club does not track nor have any responsibility for this product or service.

I have said that there is no SilverHairsClub fund, and despite my warning, you have persisted in putting up this advertising. As u have been an old member, I respected your comment, and did not delete the said advertising.

One more time, SilverHairsClub will not allow free advertising on this forum, except in the monthly fleamart.

Your intention may be good, and I appreciate that too. I would be happy to discuss the idea of a SilverHairsClub fund, if you can get a group, and make a proposal. As SilverHairsClub is a social unregistered club, the answer is NO.

Please note that if you continue to offer advertising, in the name of SilverHairsClub, your membership will be withdrawn. No further reminder.

  3. Hi Terence,

Can you throw some light on what Steven is doing with regard to dog boarding, are we doing the same thing. I have offer to contribute a token and am not getting a free ride.

Since you have said your piece I am prepare to have the post deleted. What I suggested here are open to suggestion. Obviouly if there is some form of advertisement a person will have to be appointed to oversee.

    Dan

  4. Dear Dan. Firstly, I believe you have suggested it out of goodwill, just like all the things you have had done for SHC. I feel sad that Terence has used such harsh words. He has a good reason to do so. Let me say something to placate this “doomsday” effect.

MONEY is a sensitive issue. A very sensitive issue. Revenue, income, payment, charges, fees, prices, fares, commissions, collections, cost, fund and whatever you name it, it is ultimately a few pieces of legal-tender notes. If it is just an exchange of notes between two mutually agreed persons, there is no issue. We do it every day when we buy things. However, if you put it on print, or in this case, on screen; it is open to a host of uncertainty, comments, remarks and questions. That’s why accountants and auditors are gainfully employed – to provide the answers. People always have questions about money. And by virtue of the “clean environment” in our land, people tend to be straight and narrow when dealing with money. Taking the other path surely invites trouble as recent cases in society have demonstrated. While some will wonder quietly at controversial money matters, others cannot help but think aloud and ask pointed questions. Hence I can understand why Terence has sprung to life first before others do.

Until such time when we have proper accounting and accountability, let’s be more reserved when money is concerned. After tomorrow (if any), we shall celebrate Christmas. MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, followed by a GOOD NEW YEAR of course.

  5. Terence,

Corporate membership appeals to those who have already started a company and it easy to join SHC as such. Some of us are free-lance property agent and we use a company as a front and therefore not able to join as corporate member because we do not have a stake in the company.

I did put up the idea of a fund but it was just that, an idea. Are you infering that I will go ahead to administer this fund, you are wrong it will be the last thing I will do.

In all the events that I organised, as far as money matters I will have an assistant to handle. As any EOs would know, an event do not just happen, it take a lot of groundwork and even to the extend of pinching our own pockets.

Every time you open your mouth you would ask member to voice their opinions and offer suggestions to make the Club vibrant and wat not, here I am just doing that.

I admit I did call out to members for help. In the first instances, it was a dear couple I knew. On the second comments I am trying to offer help to these two Jap ladies. Yes, I expect to collect a commission and that is why I suggested paying for the advertisement on this post. I will refrain from further posting of my services. But it’s strange that those corporate company can, personal services cannot and I just cannot see the logic!

  6. Hi Dan

After reading the comments above, I thot I’ll just give my 2 cents worth of comments. Ah ha :-)

Understand your point but our Fairy Godmother has to be ‘firm’ as the SHC blog is his to answer. So in view of
Christmas which is indeed a Happy Season, let’s just

“Stay Healthy, Don’t Worry, Be Happy”

Doomsday did’nt happen yesterday. Let’s be thankful that we have more time to ENJOY!

    Warmest regards,
    “kAYpOH”

  7. Hi Dan Huang,

( Can you throw some light on what Steven is doing with regard to dog boarding, )

Terence has given me permission through email to advertise on line for my dog boarding services. If you are not convinced you may ask him.

  8. Hi Dan Huang,

Unlike you I don’t earn any commission.

I earn it all through my sheer hard work and through my regular dog customers who appreciate and recommend my services to other pet lovers.

Frankly speaking, most of my customers are not SHC members but rather strangers who came to know of my services through my flyers on pet boarding at a much cheaper price with 3 extra FREE services unlike those of pet hotels/pet shops where they will charge you for these 3 services such as daily walking, weekly bathing and simple grooming.

Just to share, I had a customer who appreciates my service so much that he specially customise his Thank You card for me with colour photos of his adopted dog and him with these ending paragraph ( You are indeed a wonderful dog sitter and I would definitely recommend your 1st.class service to anyone requiring premium home services for dog boarding. )

  9. Dear Steven,

I have nothing against you and we all appreciates the good works you have done for the doggies.

My point of contention is on what Terence pointed out in #3, that no free advertising on this post except for corporate member and on the fleamart. Do I see a double standard here?

During my five years in SHC, I have contributed as much as I could. Getting a deal done on this post is still ‘bread and butter’ to me, I will not die a rich man.

Terence, I do appreciate the higher access given to me. To me it does not make a different whether I have higher or lower access. With lower access I just have to do less.

I have taken heed of the warning snd will act accordingly.

    Dan

  10. I know I’m threading on a very sensitive issue but I feel compelled to come in and say something, because we’re looking at the issue from two respectable gentlemen, Terence and Dan. First of all, I want to say that this is unsolicited, ie. Dan didnt ask me to write in.

I think SHC more senior members know Dan by now – he’s not unreasonable or quarrelsome. If fact, I’ve been told that he’s kind and considerate (well, you’ve guessed it right – it must be from a lady!) and I believe SHC friends are mindful of his goodness, and are giving him the due respect, otherwise you’ll probably see plenty of strong missiles flying all over, if my feeling of SHC’s culture is not wrong.

I believe Dan wants to make an honest discussion from what’s in his heart.

Unfortunately matters on such sensitive issues sometimes cannot be clarified in writing and there’re no straightforward answers – it may look unfair or have double-standards, but sometimes many things we face seem to have double-standards, but sometimes it is not meant to be. Life is not fair sometimes, right? Win some, lose some (familiar?). And sometimes trying to clarify and explain them will lead to no end of the debate. That’s why Terence keeps calling for people to organise things and many shun from organizing things cos no leader likes to face difficult situations and criticisms. Been there, done that, but finally threw in the towel in some voluntary jobs before – told my friends, no thank you, it’s a thankless job. I’m not a good leader.

So Terence, hang on there being the Big Chief Thundercloud. Dan, remember “When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.”
    ? Helen Keller.

So Dan, look for the 2nd door that’s opening – remember, there’s opportunity in adversity (ji-hui).

Please forgive my long long story – must be the Chrismassy mood, especially on a Xmas Eve. Hope this will cheer everybody up and Merry Xmas and Best Wishes to all SHC Friends for Good Health, Happiness – and Longevity for SHC!

  11. Thanks Susan, I am touched by your kind understanding of the situation.

Terence, this post was meant to help fellow members to voice their need for certain kind of services. It could be someone needed to adopt a puppy and appealing to member or someone looking for a mate.

On the post I seek for accomodation for a good friend, does this constitute advertising where no money is exchange? I perceived your warning as regard to the fund only. My putting up the request to help the Jap ladies will be the first form of advertising, your warning here was unjustified.

Terence, #3 you mentioned that the Fleamart is a place for member to earn income for their services and is free, this is personal ads and is free. Am I doing the same thing?

Steven, #9 whether you earn a commission or not, as long as you exchange money for services it is still a form of advertisemenr. Correct me if I am wrong.

What I am sadden is Terence has treated this indiscretion on my part as a criminal act.

    Desparate Dan

  12. Hi Dan #12,

I hear your views; and I hope you have read mine.

I treat all memberships the same, and there is nothing discrininatory against you. The SilverHairsClub is a free membership club, and it will not allow advertising; except under the terms of Corporate membership or the Fleamart.

Perhaps, I shall consider some form of paid advertising at some stage. This will be announced soon. Meantime, please take note of what is mentioned in Point #3.

    Thank you.

  13. Back home from outside, no work in hand, tried to surf the SHC site.

Have not surf the site for sometime, as it is a bit difficult to surf the site now, take very long time to get in or even hang the PC.

After in the site, glanced thro the topics of the posts. A post from Dan “Abang got lobang” attracted me, especially the word “Lobang”, I wondered why I missed it before.

I read thro the post and the comments, and a question come to my mind.

Dan’s post “Abang got Lobang” and Steven’s post “Dog broading for Temporary/Long Term” are the same type – advertise their service in the SHC site. Both of these two post is against the SHC rules, so they are illegal in the SHC environment.

Steven quoted that he has sought and get Terence’s permission. Yes, Terence own SHC, he is the king. He has all the right to allow/permit any member do anything against the SHC rules set up by him, if he considered they are reasonable.

In Dan and Steven’s cases, Steven has obtained his permission and Terence consider the service is a good one, Dan, even he has not get the permission and the service is consider not suitable, but because he is a long term member and has made a lot on contribution to the site, so both post are still put up on the site.

But according to the SHC rules, these two post are still illegal and Dan/Steven are still doing something illegal in the SHC environment.

Why Steven can still speak it out so ???? without any shame???!!! I confused and wondered

I also do not agree with what Steven said:

“Unlike you, I don’t earn any commission. I earn it all through my sheer hard work and through my regular dog customers who appreciate and recommend my services to other pet lovers”

I think no matter what kind of service we provide, we all earn the money thro “SHEER HARD WORK”. I think Dan has also do the “SHEER HARD WORK”.

  14. Andrew,

Thanks for coming forward to share your viewpoints. All msid and done Terence have decided that members can now advertise on the post. It was trying getting Terence to relent and it cause me to throw ‘bricks’ at Terence which I now regretted.

As I said before this post was meant to be something different. It dun have to be advertising for a service. It can be someone looking for a certain kind of toilet cover or wat kind of machine on the market that washes our backside when we are done with our business. Any thing under the sun that you fancy, can be collecting Marvel comics or peculiar hobbies.

Terence, when I first started the post looking for the room, it was for a need for a friend. At the same time I thot it would be good to generate some activity on the post. You have kindly put up the new post on ‘One Liner’, response is slow in coming, I wonder why no member is making use of it?

You are a clever man, you are a good chess player, you always think a few step ahead, so you always come up with brilliant ideas to make contribution to the us

I am not clever (hmm… also not stupid lah). May be one merit of those not clever is most of them will follow the rule. So I always stand behind the yellow line (I have across the line once and get a very painful experience).

Your idea is good, but it still belong to advertising services in the SHC site, which should be done by using the comment in the Fleamarket post. If you put a new post for your advertisement, that is against the SHC rule, even you have get the permission from Terence.

If you really consider you idea is brilliant and workable, you should discuss with Terence (private e-mail or Post)and convince him to adjust the existing rule so as to make you method legal.

If you and Steven do it in your way, they are against the SHC rules and is illegal in the SHC platform. It will also affect Terence’e reputation, as he has broken the rule set up by himself.

The opinion from an not clever guy.
