February gathering – Wed, 7 Feb

Information on gathering:  Usually various interest groups meet at the monthly gatherings.  One group is the D&D committee.  They will get to know one another.  Other groups just want to get to know one another.  So feel free to chat.  Everybody is new to one another.

When you arrive, please tick your name against the registration list.  Write your name on a sticker, and paste the sticker on your left/right of your blouse/shirt.  Take a voucher SGD 2.50 and you can purchase a drink at the counter.  We are packed that day.  Do enjoy the evening.

By now, I guess most of you get a feel on the type of activities which generate the most interest.   These activities aside, it seems there are very few interests groups on small business.  Around mid 2005, we had seen interests from SilverHairs looking at starting small businesses.  There were discussions on a cafe, a char kway teo stall, a bakery, small hotel, etc.  Unfortunately, they dwindled off.

However, I am aware that some SilverHairs have come together to form small groups, looking at stocks, money and other financial investments.  Personally, I am pleased to see these activities going on, although I dont have the money or courage to go into them.

It is important that SilverHairs continue to find meaningful ways to keep active and healthy.  No one is going to support us through our SilverHairs years.  I plan to live at least up to 70 years.  I have always encouraged SilverHairs to get together, and if the synergies click, go into some form of small business.  So if you have thoughts of going into a small business, share it out among other equally interested SilverHairs.  You never know, you may find someone with the same interest.

As 2007 kicks off, I think we can rekindled these ideas.  So, let’s schedule the date for SilverHairs who still have the entrepreneur spirit, to meet.

Date:  7 Feb, Wed.  Time:  1700 – 2000 hrs.  Venue:  Cafe inside MPH, between Robinson Road and Shenton Way, and between Raffles MRT and Tanjong Pagar MRT.

And, if you just like to meet other SilverHairs, to meet and chat, you are also welcome to come.  This is the Feb gathering.  Talk about the cookies you are making for Chinese New year or the next holiday to Perth, India or Thailand.  Any thing.

Entrance: Free;  a cup of Coffee or tea at $2.50 on the club.  For registered participants only.  Please be aware of the risks involved in businesses and investments.  No discussions on MLM and no direct selling during the gathering.

  1. On that black monday 19 October 1987, spore lost another upstart m’$aire when the stock & futures markets crashed so caution is advised when dabbling with shares/financial instruments esp as silverhairs we might be itching to invest our withdrawn cpf. With many of us having no idea what biz to do the temptation to play shares is irresistible when, in the early days of a rising bull market, it’s almost like “put $, take $”. Well, if you must play shares, be very very careful hor and remember, when the tip is hot, it only means that the tip-maker is looking for suckers.

  2. Thank you for the reminder, Tim.
Although I really dun not what had happened on that particular black Monday 19 Oct 1987. “Yat Tou Mo Sui” (translate that in Cantonese). That’s why I have to learn from the 2 Uncles Ronald (just pulling your legs ah, Ronaldes, sori hor, I didn’t say I am young but sound like you are much more older than me. hahaha..) I will see you guys there at 6pm after my one hard day work.

    Cheerio
    Rene

  3. Hi

Have missed several functions in the last 2 to 3 months (karaoke, walks, potluck, etc) due to various commitments – losing out on all the fun. Will definitely try to make it for this February’s meeting.
By the way, Terence, how do I go about changing my password for logging in. The one given to me is very difficult to remember.

    Rgds to all.
    sb

  4. Hi

Will definitely attend but, just wondering, the last time it was full house. Will there be enough space for us at the cafe?

    Investment talk at the meeting?
We are very near banks and CPF office for those who want to withdraw money to punt!

Did you hear my investing rules at the potluck?

    Rule #1 Don’t lose money.

Rule #2 Refer to Rule #1.

  5. For the benefit of non-cantonese, Rene’s “Yat Tou Mo Sui” is “1 head fog water” but what that means, hehe, sorry, you figure it out……easy find a foggy place then splash water on the head…….. (Joke only lah, dont try hor, that’s how bird flu came to be after that bird brain did exactly what I said).

The financial market is no better or worse than a casino….they arent afraid that you come in; only afraid that you wont return after making a dollar. Forget abt trading at fair value or below its historical pe, nta backing is strong etc….when the mart “cheong”, there’s no roof to ahoot thru but when it plunges, it’s not like bungy-jump where someone ties yr leg.

Lest i sound like a damper, no, there’s money to be made but pls pls be very very un-greedy & creaful, and attach no sentiment to yr shares.

  6. As for me, I have learnt that the safest place to put my money is under my pillow. I get to smell it each night and know that it is there the next morning when I awake.

    enJoying my $$$…

  7. Rene,

Never ever address an elder as uncle and auntie unless you are below 15 years old. From your parent and grand parent, you may have picked it up as a Chinese culture in learning manners. But in today’s world, you are offending somebody without a knowing.
To be prudent, better enroll yourself to the “University of Society”

  8. Guest on the 15 storey, like my ahmad butty says all the time, “strum the guitar & relac lah”. Obviously the fun & frolic of potluck lingers on in this thread, and none of us wants to pull a straight face. So I can see that Rene was only joking, not poking, esp if we know what a sunny gal she is.

A butty 20 years my senior calls me uncle everytime. I see it as an accolade accorded to me with respect, however undeserving I feel.

  9. Investment talks began in Sep 2006, that was the time to learn and invest.

Now as KT Wong & Ken are all advising, is time to talk about planning for Holidays and preserving your assets for the next accummulation cycle. The Stock Market is now more like an IR without the $100 tax, very exciting with rumours of Aunties (young and old Auntie Renes ) winning everyday, so beware and know what you are indulging in now.

Maybe it is better to invest your time rather than money in learning about Options, CFDs, Forex and short selling for the next trend or start taking up new courses in HR to work in the IR for a new, exciting, glittering job.

Never miss a good coffee talk even if we get called ‘Uncles or Aunties’. This comes with the limited senior citizen discounts
we get, even from those who are about to cross the border lah, that is the fun lah ??

    Cheers, Allrounder
(using nickname, so don’t hope not to be labelled as Uncle lah )

  10. Thanks for my “Tai Seng Hong” buddy who reads me well.

We used to call each other “uncles and aunties” at “my own” gathering regardless of their age. Often, we hear Grandmas call the younger bus driver “Thank you! Uncle” accorded with respect.

Regret to those who feel offended

  11. Eunice Says: “mah fang”. Sounds like modified “Mah Jong” hor.

Joy Says: “the safest place to put my money is under my pillow”. Sounds like “money” pillow. Must be very expensive neh.

Rene Says: “we hear Grandmas call the younger bus driver “Thank you! Uncle” accorded with respect.” In return, the bus driver replied “Miss, u look beri pretty today leh”.

Tim Liu Says: “A butty 20 years my senior calls me uncle everytime. I see it as an accolade accorded to me with respect, however undeserving I feel.” Its because U are too old to be their junior lor.

    Have a great day. :)

  12. Hahaha, Yew Kwong……….yr interpretation…………like that also got one meh?

Btw, yr name reminds me of this very big ah lao uncle. If one still doesnt know who KY is then he’ll take an agonising long time to uncle-nise, or auntise, as the case may be.

  13. Indeed, KY is always on the lips…..

First, without ah lao uncle KY, we’d probaly hv become YY with no money for good buys but say goodbye to a relatively good life.

Second, KY made the kallang roar more fun during the msia cup days……..surely, all referees who blew against spore were deserved kayus.

Last, not least, YK has 2 KYs…….watch them……arent we waiting for someone to find the complete cure for AIDS?

  14. Hello,
I suggest to have all committee members to sit in one Sat.afternoon for a brainstorming session relating to the D&D event. Unity and co-operation is needed. Thks..clara

  15. Have we changed the timing if not the meeting is 5-8pm.So those because of work only can come at 730-8pm will just come to say goodbye hahaha. Can push back the time or what or finish later?

  16. hey terence l think u r too stressed.read my posting again.l didnt say l going to be late.l am speaking out for those who said they are coming at 7-7.30pm.The meeting is 5-8pm.So l was wondering for those who can only come after 7pm,what is the point,we are leaving at 8pm.
So is the meeting still at 5pm-8pm

  17. Hi Christie,

Yeap, really stressed. So nice, you can come, but we would still go ahead, starting 5pm.

Yes, it is 5 – 8 pm. Try to sneak out earlier. I will also do so.

    Terence

  18. Heee, does hell’s gate open punctually at 8 p.m. daily to release all kinds of kwai for a breather?

If not, and so no dnager of being molested by humsup kawi or accosted by larjar kwai when the nite’s still so young, then perhaps those who still spirited can drag the session a bit longer (unless the operator has to close shop & go home to punt on fooball).

Likewise, if there’s nothing to talk, hehe, after half hour can go home oi oi koon liao.

  19. Date: 7 Feb, Wed. Time: 1700 – 2000 hrs. Venue: Cafe inside MPH, between Robinson Road and Shenton Way, and between Raffles MRT and Tanjong Pagar MRT.

Aove is a cut-n-paste from the announcement posting.

    Res ipsa loquita.

  20. perhaps you are a new member didnt know we used to meet at 6-6.30pm.Now its been changed to 5pm.Dont want to name names here,l was told by her its 6pm,so just want to re-confirm. Even if it was stated at 5pm in the posting it can be changed due to circumstances.Just like the cost of attending the D&D was $25 now its $30 (to include drinks and GST).

Like to hear from terence to confirm the timing.

  21. We usually start at 6pm and ends at 8pm. However, many members do come at 5pm. As the monthly gatherings are usually informal, please come as you see fit. There is no agenda for this agenda. It’s free and easy.

For the D&D committee, it is also a good chance to know one another.

We will be there from 5pm, and end at 8pm.

  22. Hi Terence, I would like to attend the fabruary gathering, please register my name for the event. Waiting for your reply to confirm my seat. Thank you. John Chan

  24. Hi Terence, Mary Chan, Catherine Yeo, Steven Chan and Clara

    Ronlai

  25. Hehe Ron,

Sorry about that but it was just a case of clicking on Mary’s posting to reply to her and ended up here. Call it follow the leader n the blind leading the blind which ended in a domino effect?

Hmm, now to trace back to the source……
One thing is for sure you are a sharp eyed one Ron!
