Cancer – share the experience around you

Please do not copy  and paste from the internet.

Cancer is  painful and dreaded sickness. Many of us know of a friend or a relative who had suffered from cancer, undergoing treatment or has passed away bcause of cancer. Be it cancer of the lungs, colon, postrate, nose, skin, or smach, the sickness is dreaded and feared.  If treatment is treated early, the cances of a cure is high; if detected late, it’s along process of treatment, and a stress to the care-giver. It is also expensive.

What have you experienced, seen or done when you knopw of someone who has cancer. Which hospital did you go? What were your medication? Which foreign country did the person go to for treatment? What herbs or plants were tried? How much was spend? What kind of government support was available?

Share your experience so that others can learn from you. We are all getting old. Your sharing can be useful information to  other members.

  1. Very practical topic indeed….. Anyone would care to share if the cancer patient opted out both operation and chemo, what are the other options that family members will be usually given by the Cancer Centre.

Is it true that if cancer patient is old (ie above 80+age) operation is no longer a option for them as advised by doctor?

Besides being breathless for lung cancer patient in earlier stage, what are other symptoms to look out for?

Would be good someone here to share with us.. Hopefully to receive comments soon…

    Regards… Dolly

    1. Dolly,
Two years ago, my two brothers-in-law both suffered cancer. The one who had cancer of the liver, 50 years old, opt out of surgery, depended on thai medication, went with chemo, exercise well, and passed away a year later. The other brother-in-law had cancer of the lungs, aged 60, opted out of surgery, depended on thai drugs, chemo and passed away 6 months later.

A month ago, a colleaque of mine, thai, 45, was diagnosed for nose cancer, was told surgery not needed. He undergoes radiation, chemo and medication. His case is considered treatable.

I presently have a Myanmese friend, 65, having colon cancer. Went through 2 operations, can walk, talk and eat soft food. He has been suffering for more than 1 year.

  2. Cancer is a dreadful disease. Once a person gets it, it is like a death sentence
has been passed on that person. This may not the case. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, cancer may not be terminal. One prominent person here is a living example.
Most of the usual methods of treatment are chemotherapy and radiation which are highly intrusive and damaging. While the processes are to kill cancer cells other good cells are also affected. During this time the patient would suffer a great deal of pain. However not all cancers are treated this way. An effective way to cure a leukemia patient is to do a bone marrow transplant. But this treatment is very expensive. Moreover, not many clinics are equiped to undergo such surgery. Further a matching donor must be found. Few countries have such a data bank. Cancer patients in their 80s are usually advised not to go through the intrusive therapy. The sufferings may in effect shorten their lives.
For some, as a last resort they may try non-conventional methods. They may try certain narcotics to ease the pain thereby prolonging their lives.
Humankind are rather controversial. While they spend billions of dollars trying to find a cure for cancer, the question of prevention is unanswered. Environmental pollutions, food contamination with toxic chemicals are the major causes of cancer. For examples, a person who inhales more than twenty cigarettes a day would most likely suffer from lung cancer, because of the constant stimulation of the lung cells by the nicotine to mutate into cancer cells. A person who exposes too much to the sun’s ultraviolet light would vastly increase the chance of getting skin
    cancer.
While I was in Taiwan, a tour guide told me a true story about his sister who was married into a family where many members including his brother-in-law suffered from cancer. The sister determined to find out what were the causes. The clue was that the family was earning a living through selling Taiwanese sausages.
    What do you think?

  3. Further to my previous comment, I would like to add a piece of information.
For the treatment of leukemia, a US clinic has the facility to do the bone marrow
transplant. It is called the Mayo Clinic.

  4. Hi Robert

As we know sausages are processed meat with lots of salt and fat content, not forgetting the chemicals being added to preserve the color, etc, it is not surprising that the family members are prone to cancer – on the assumption that they eat sausages on a regular basis.

  5. My hubby had pancreatic cancer. I understand it is one of those cancers that is very difficult to detect. Two biopsies showed negative in March and November 2002. The third one done in July 2003 tested positive. It was already in the final stage. He went through operations and chemo but it was too late. However, I did what I could to make his remaining days easier with TLC, cooked him his favourite food although he ate very little and made sure I was there for him 24/7.
My father in law had liver cancer and was diagnosed when he was abt 80 years old. The doctor too said it was up to him whether to go through the operation as he had a slim chance of recovering and there was high risks involved, considering his age. He opted out. It was probably late stage so he did not manage to leave the hospital alive after two weeks there.
Dolly, just my thoughts. If the person does not wish to go through with the operation because of the fear of complications or it may affect the quality of life after that, then I would let it be unless the doctor is very sure of high rate of success. I would think it would be good to make the remaining days of the person comfortable, happy and fulfilling.

    Best Regards

I lost 2 brothers to cancer within the last 5 years. Both in their mid 60s when they die. One had cancer on his thyroid and the other had it in his lungs. Both were healthy sporting individuals taken by surprise when doctors diagnose them with 4th stage cancer and predicted months left to live. They were given the best western medical care money can buy plus large doses of health food and lots of family care. They both lived 2 years more due to the extra care but eventually succumb. I watch them go through the last few months of their life, it was painful for them. I often wonder if it would be less painful if their family would allowed them to have a good time and die quicker.
It is socially unacceptable to let a kin die without doing anything. It also eases the conscience of the living that they have done something. But one must be carefully that we are helping the patient and not ourselves. It the patient can decide, it must be left to them to decide. But if we have to decide for them and for myself, I would much rather have a good time and die early, than a lingering painful end.

  7. Carly
I am sorry that you have lost members of your family through cancer.
In regard to your answer on the causes of cancer suffered by the Taiwanese
family, you are partially correct in saying that it was the cooking fumes that brought on the disease. The human lung is the organ that can absorb gases. When a person breaths, the oxygen in the air is transported by the blood
to other tissues. So when the lungs take in cigarette smoke and cooking fumes, the toxic substances cause the body cells to change.
Probably the cooking area did not have a good exhaust system to take away the toxic fumes when the sausages were BBQ.
In the next paragraph, we want to know the second cause of the cancer.

    Geraldine and Carly
For us to understand what actually happened, a little knowledge on chemistry and physics will be helpful.
The sausages were BBQ. In the process, the meat and the sausage skin were
subjected to high heat cooking, thereby causing the foodstuff to become carcinogenic. That is, the food had changed to something else and became toxic.
Any material that has undergone extreme conditions will change its properties. Artificial diamond is made from carbon.
Much of the leftover sausages were consumed by the Taiwanese family members.
So as a result, over many years, the toxic fumes and the BBQ sausages did the harm.

    1. All of us are getting older. And Cancer does not escape anyone.

Just over the weekend, our Vincent Khoo got himself into TTS to follow up on the discharge of large amounts of blood, while in the toilet.
He had piles, and he had also felt a lump in his ass. The doctor put him through a series of tests, and he is now confirmed to have Cancer. He will undergo radiation, chemo and then surgery.

I had been very sad some one year ago, when I meet an old school friend and SHC member. We met and had coffee. His wife is Inez Lim whom many of you know. The husband is James Koh, who had been very active in our discussions on retirement living. He has cancer of the lungs. He coughs and pains regularly, and I feel sad to see him getting thinner and thinner. While he prefers to keep his sufferings to himself, if you know Inez and James, let’s give them our moral support.

That’s the reason why I ask everyone who has personal experience with relatives who has cancer to share their experience.

      Terence Seah

  8. Robert,

Thank you for sharing. Very informative. Oh dear! I love BBQ food but i am quite good at it. I usually let the charcoal burn and only start cooking when the flames have died and the charcoal glowing.

If every member share their experiences and what they know, we can all learn a lot from this forum. Nothing shared here is too insignificant nor unimportant. So come forth and share.

    Cheers
    Carly

  9. My father died of lung cancer because he is a heavy smoker . Although he has quitted smoking for 20 yrs before he died, it was too late. My mother who is a non smoker sufffers from inhaling secondary smoke from my father and she too suffers v. painfully from lymphatic cancer. The doctor inject heroin to temporary stopped the pain almost every week. She died after 1 year later as a ” vegetable ” in bed . If I were her, I would choose to end my life earlier than to subject myself to great pain and misery .

  10. Hi everybody,
Many people travel the world in search of a herb or drug or plant that can cure cancer. I mean cure or prolong one’s life.

Whether one travels to China, Tibet, India or Indonesia, please share what you know.

  11. I’m a caregiver for a lung cancer patient – diagnosed stage four in June 2011. Patient is a non-smoker. There were no symptoms except cough and weight loss, which we thought was TB, but CT scan and biopsy confirmed to be lung cancer. 6 months of conventional chemo didn’t shrink the tumour. (Costs about S$4K per cycle, but after subsidies etc, out-of pockets was about S$1K per cycle.)
We were approached to be “white mice” for a new oral drug – but had to undergo various tests to see if patient “fits” the genetic criteria (some ALK genetic mutation). ” White spots” in the brain made the patient not eligible. But the oncologist appealed to the drug manufacturer – on “compassionate” grounds – and we were accepted.
Viola – 6 months of bliss – even managed short holidays to neighboring countries. There were little side effects of nausea etc and it’s free…
But after about 6 months, CT scan results showed increase in size of the tumour. The drug had lost its efficacy..
Offered another oral trial drug – this time the effects of diarrhea, loss of appetite, etc takes a toll on the body. But the tumour shrank, so it was continued for about a year. (They paid us S$50 for each visit to see doctor and to collect drugs. CT scan costs are borned by the drug company). Then the patient developed fever every night, which the doctors called “tumour fever”. The tumour is growing again – so would an added infusion of chemo drug help? Tried the new regime for 1 month (oral and infusion) – but there’s no improvements.
    What next??
Options – Back to conventional chemo? Palliative? Any other alternatives? TCM? :(
The prognosis in 2011 was 6 to 9 months. We managed more than 2 years.
We are thankful – and opted for palliative.
Things that needed attention are taken care of and put in place.
Each day is a gift – that’s why it is called – present..

    1. Hi StevenC,
It’s nice to hear from you, sharing what most people would rather keeping to themselves. We all know smoking is bad, yet smokers will always have reasons for another stick.

I gave up smoking some 15 years ago. Thanks to governments for making smoking expensive and difficult to find smoking places.

Welcome back StevenC. There is still life.

  12. Terence,

I remembered my sisters read about a cure for cancer from juices of some plant. My family and I would take the bumpy 5 to six hour van ride (8 of us could not fit into a car) all the way up north to some remote organic farm every other week to buy the plants – seven different types. Upon returning, I had to wash them and put them out to dry and pack them into one serving bundles about the size of a 8x10inch plastic bag full. Every morning, I would juice it and it had this awful “green” smell. But my hubby “kuai kuai” drank it (I knew he did it for me). I wished I had not made him drink the awful concoction. But so long as there is some hope, we will grab it.

  13. Over the last 13 years I have been given plants that claim to cure cancer. We planted them but forgot where they are because no one ask for them. I have not experience or witness any cure from these herbs except ‘Dragon Leaves’ which a distant nephew was cured of Leukaemia many years back. His mother did not accept ‘NO HOPE’ from any doctors. Maybe it was the mothers incessant love that cured him.
The latest ‘fashion’ in herbal cure is ‘Sabah Grass’ as far as I know.
For those who wants herbal treatment, I know of a Dr. in Biology who uses plants to cure patients in Penang. You can get this contact from me in private. Yes, it is much farther than Lim Chu Kang.

  14. Tian Soo
I have several friends who were cured of leukemia and I do not know if it was because of incessant love from a dear one. However, all the cases of pancreatic cancer I know of, had no chance of long term survival, no matter how much TLC and love we give. When the passport has expired, there is no other way but to go :(
But I really do hope a sure cure for all types of cancer be found soon.

  15. My family have a history of cancer, 2 uncles,1aunt (father’s siblings) 2 of my brothers, 1 sister, including myself, I was lucky to have detected early stage breast cancer, 16 years ago. I did not go through chemo, as it was very early stage,. just radiation, my other brothers & sister went through chemo & was heart wrenching to see them suffer the side effect. But nothing we can do.

One brother pass away after suffering nose cancer for 2 years, my sister (breast cancer) 20 years ago is well and healthy.

Now the story of my other brother whom was cured of cancer 10 years ago. He was an active sportsman, doing all kind of water sports. But cancer do not spare anybody, no matter how active or how rich you are.

It took one whole year to detect his cancer,he just feel there’s something not right, lots of foams in the urine, so he went to his family doctor for a medical checkup but can’t find anything wrong, all results came out good and no trace of any cancer mark. But he is determine that there is something wrong with himself so he seek a second opinion still results came out nothing. The doc can’t find anything wrong , the last resort is to do a bone marrow test and true enough he got cancer (Multiple Myeloma, a rare type of blood cancer). I remember I was in Europe and the news was kept from me until I return, my heart sank.

He went through first round of chemo but when the result was not good the doctor wanted to give him another round months later but he rejected it. He tell himself he does not want to suffer any more side effect of the chemo, if time is up he rather go than to suffer the side effect.

He surf the net tirelessly everyday hoping to find some kind of medicine or any other types of cure beside chemo and he did. He came upon an article written by this cancer patient that this “Grape Diet” cured his cancer. So he start the grape diet for 6 weeks, only grapes and plain water and nothing else., no coffee, no tea, no rice, no food at all.  He took 2 kgs of grapes everyday, every 2 to 3 hours. He lost weight drastically but he continue and finish the 6 weeks diet.

When he went back to the doctor for a review/checkup, the doctor was shock to see his cancer was cleared by 85% and ask him to continue what he was doing. A panel of doctors interiewed him like how and what he takes, doctors can only listen but cannot confirm that was the cause  because it is not clinically proven.

He will still take this diet once every 6 months. He is now cleared of cancer. It sounds easy right? But it’s not,  when you have to chew the grapes 24/7, the tongue and throat becomes sore so he blend (skin & seeds) and drink it instead.

Though he is cure he still look out for other possible cure. He is careful with his diet, no more perservative food, like salted fish, BBQ food…etc

But no body can guarantee that the cancer will not come. Anyway, I am not sure and don’t know if this will work for everybody. As we know too much of certains things like drugs will lost it’s efficacy, same as cosmetics if we use a brand for too long it gets immune to it and the effect will not be as good. So how long will this grape diet last no body knows.
Could be this brother of mine have much better luck and time is not up yet.

Well I believe the most important is the determination of position thinking, don’t let the disease tied you down. Just be happy and do what we want to do and live life to the fullest. All of us have to go one day, it’s only how soon.

    Best of health to everyone.
    ET

  19. I met the owner of a resort over the weekend, and he had cancer. He is more than 70,. and has recovered from cancer some twenty years ago. According to him, he had colon cancer, was operated, but refuse to undergo chemo. He said there was a TCM doctor at Changi hospital, who treated him with TCM medication. But this doctor has since left and gone back to China to continue his work with the Cancer Centre there.

Has anyone of you heard or know where this doctor is? Since a number of my friends have had cancer, I have developed an interest for find other cancer treatment. I appreciated those who have contributed to his topic.

  20. If there is anything that makes me sad these days, and that is the loss of an ex-school mate and a fellow SHC member. I was just informed that James Koh, husband of Inez Lim, has just passed on, due to cancer.

Let wish Inez well, attend the wake if you have time and give the family our support.

A part of our life process.

  21. There are just too many people around us having cancer. Whether it is cancer of the nose, colon, liver, lungs, skin, breast or …… , we are not sheltered from this illness. Many of us look for a cure, because some of our of our friends or relatives have this illness. Thank you to those members who have share their concoction made from herbal plants, besides radiation, chemo and surgery.

Some of you have shared about this plant called Sabah Snake grass “Clinacanthus Nutans”. I had not seen the plant before. Yesterday, I visited the Canningvale market in Perth, and saw a queue of foreigners and Australians buying Sabah Snake Grass. The pack, costing AUD 25, comes in 10 sachets of 3 gms. Because it is hygenically packed, the product is accepted into Australia. Apparently, the real plant is not allowed into Australia due to customs rules. The plant is available in Malaysia.

Any one of you know of someone who had some success with Sabah Snake Grass? either as a plant or as a herbal powder?
