Kong Hei Fatt Choy meet-up in Feb 2008

During this Chinese New Year month, how about having something different?  Dim-sum, raw fish or go easy on Chinese tea?  Name a place, somewhere where the venue wont mind our noise.  We can decide  by Jan 17.  Cheers.

As of 8 Jan 2008, the tentative (99% confirmed) venue for the Chinese New Year event is "Fortunate Restaurant at Toa Payoh (Block 181, Lorong 4, next to the Toa Payoh libary).  We will have a small dim sum menu for lunch, starting at 1100 hrs and finishing at 1400 hrs.  I plan to block 6 tables of 10 each.  The date is Sat, 16 Feb 2008.  More details after Jan 17.

After the lunch, cyclists can proceed to the East Coast for their cycling event at 4pm.  Yew Kwong thinks this arrangement is workable.  Let’s try it out.

  1. Aslamak the Terence, still no business after alomost 72 hours? Maybe, you kong the hee too early and fatt the choy isnt timely for moi.

Anyhow, i hv the answer to yr “Name a place, somewhere where the venue wont mind our noise”.

Where else but that wonderful apartment in hougang. I can tell you now that my butty Kim Seng will only be too happy to make his whole block of flats dance with the noise as we make the raw fish come alive and dim some light for those who need some bedminton……….

  2. Lina, really admire yr good eye-sight, no dount leraned it after years of watching macritchie monkeys playing at nite.

(Btw, Feb 1008 is a specific month; without the day, it’s not a mth hor).

Terence, if you arent a Mongolian then you must be some kind of a Khan…and if still non of the above, come take my gun.

  3. We could have a lunch at a traditional Chinese dim sum restaurant. Talking around the group, we can meet at Lucky restaurant near Toa Payoh Library, another similar restaurant in Chin Bee Road or the Yum Cha in China Town.

Last year, I remembered some of us went to the temporary shed near the Outram MRT station.

Tim, no wonder no feedback after 72 hours. I shall change the year to 2008. Sharp, eh?

  4. Aiyo, all these restn suggested by u cant hv longer loh hei lunch la.. they are always crowded n those waiters/waitress will always purposely come around the tables askg wat other orders u nid anot la..

  5. Aiyo Dolly still awake also? I also think the same. Must go and look for a ulu place. But I am going to sleep already. I think this kuay bak promoted already. Still awake at this hour. Must be the tea and ice cream.

  6. Now, the Chinese New Year festive has arrived. A good time to meet and exchange best wishes. So, based on feedback to date, I have picked the “Fortunate Restaurant at Toa Payoh (Block 181, Lorong 4, next to the Toa Payoh libary.

Now, the lunch will start at 1100 hrs and finish at 1400 hrs. After the event, the cyclists can proceed to the East Coast.

And the date is Sat, 16 Feb 2008.

  7. Terence,
My adv is dat u beta call 2 check if they allow reservation 2b make during CNY period as I blif tis date is still w/in the 15 days of CNY rite? Wat I noe is dat is Restn is always very crowded during weekends, let alone now coupled with CNY season. Usually they dun not allow resrvn n insist on 1st come 1st serve lor..

What is the budget for this meal har??

  8. … after eating, cyclists can proceed to ECP … heehee … presumably to burn off the calories?

I like the idea but might have to work that Sat.

  9. Hi Terence, will be there ;)
Noted #10, Dolly has a point there.

Are u still in town? if not, I could call the restaurant, unless you’ve made the reservation then we are set!

  10. Hi ChristinaCL,

Please do me a favour to book 3 tables of 10 pax, at one corner of the restaurant. The corner can be one end of the restaurant. I was there yesterday for lunch, but did not make any reservation.

The place is big, great for the mood, and ideal for us, the noisy ones.

For those, who like to join the group, please put your name down here, so that we can get an estimate number of people.

    Terence Seah

  11. As usually, Dolly has raised a valid pt abt whether booking will be accepted. Do check on that, pls; if need be, some of us will hv to be there early (I can chope 2 tables : 1 with my butt and the other oranges).

  12. Hey Joy,
How do you stay so slim like that? Great you will be going. Looking forward to catching up with you. Seems like everytime we get together, we don’t have much opportunity to have a good chat. Must make sure we do this time.

  13. Grace Kok,
Glad you will be ‘loh hei-ing’ too. We still haven’t gone for that chocolate cake at the ITE canteen. Wonder when Dennis Wee is going to arrange it for us. Huh Dennis? When huh?
Maybe must write his name in capitals…
    Yoohoo DENNIS WEE! ;-)

  14. Hi Mary, yup we must catch up one day. Work has been hectic these couple of weeks and hours have been exceptionally and abnormally long. I have got lots of leave to clear and we can meet up for lunch one day. Maybe with menace not the Dennis.

  15. Joy,
Yes lunch would be good. I’ll sms you to arrange for a day when we are both freer. I don’t know about Dennis as he seems to have gone back to work.
Will you be going to the SHC meeting on the 17th?

  16. Hi Everybody,

Roland Tong has kindly consented to be the Event Organiser for the Feb 2008 gathering. He will take over from here.

I have a suggestion that everybody brings along a pair of Mandarin oranges on that day. Make sure the oranges have the two eyes up, and they are the same size. Traditional, this is only politeness. You have to give the oranges to someone who is more senior than you. However, in return, the one who is more senior has to give another pair back to you. I hope we can make this a traditional practice every year. So, let’s make this a yearly event.

And, thanks Rolanad for accepting the task of Event Organiser. Roland will start a new Post, with the new registrations.

    Terence Seah

  17. Har?

Means I must weight and measure the oranges 1st lah. Hard to find a pair with same size and same weight leh.

So, we must wear a number tag to find out who is the senior and who is the junior.

Bro Roland, you will definitely received a pair from me 1st.

    Cheers
    Rene

  18. Hi Rene, and eveybody,

In Thailand, it is common to address someone senior as “Pi”, and someone junior as “Nong”. Even, if a month different in birthdates.

Find out who is senior, before you give the oranges. To start, I am a Goat.

    Terence Seah

  19. Hi Roland!

I missed the your Countdown Party due to prior commitment, this time I will definitely give u my support. Pls include me.

    “GONG XI FAI CAI”

  20. Hi Terrence,

I like your idea about the Mandarin oranges, but I like mine better, haha! Traditionally, all UNMARRIED singles receive Ang Pows from the married ones for good fortune. In advance, I shall now send you my warmest Lunar New Year Teochew greetings:

    Xin Ni Huat Chye,
    Ang Pow Meh Meh Lai

As a married Goat, I can see you will have to get ready many Ang Pows to distribute…

Eagerly looking forward to seeing you on 16 Feb.

  21. Hello Brother Tong,

How are you!? Congratulations on being EO one more time! Read you did an excellent job for last month’s countdown party. Belated congratulations for that too.

Am already signed on for this gathering. Look forward to seeing you on this special occasion.

You are No. 2 on my Ang Pow Receiving List. I am so happy! Will save my Lunar New Year greetings for you till we meet on that day. Cheers!

  22. Hi Gingko and friends,

I shall leave the new ideas to our EO. As you know, and remember, Roland is very strict.

Meantime,I am likely to give you an ang pow, if I know what zodiac animal you are, and whether you are or were married. Fair? Today and 45 years ago, my ang pow shall be $1.20 in the Teochew pink packet.

    Terence Seah

  23. Dear all,

Wishing all “Xin Ni Huat Chye”, “Money Money Mei Mei Lai”.

Terence, getting the same size of mandarin oranges for New Year wishes is not a problem, but to find out who is senior will be a headache. Not many will like to reveal their age (sensitive issue mah). Also some may look old but they may be younger than you and some may look young but actually they are older than you, how??? Why not when we meet, we exchange oranges with each other regardless of seniority. Wei wei Gingko, its kind of funny… if the younger married give “ang pow” to the older single ???? he…he…he….my zodiac animal, according to chinese calendar, I was quick enough by 1 week before lunar New year (1957) year of the Cock, so I am a year end Monkey. Terence, will I receive “ang pow” from you? :)

    Ah Nee

  24. Hey, calling all Hainam Ah Mai and Ah Kor. Shall we identify ourselves? For a start, I know these are the Hainam Ah Mai :-

    1) Caroline Gee
    2) Joy
    3) Wee Chin
    4) Gwyneth

These are the Hainam Ah Kor :-

    1) Dan Huang
    2) Boon Liang

    Who else ah?

OK, I shall pay respect to Dan Huang Ah Kor.

  25. Oooops…based on the current list, looks like I have to pay respect to so many, except Joy Chuang, Eileen Lee & may be Grace Kok? he…he…he….so simple, just recycle my mandarin oranges. Btw beside identify the seniority, race also included huh? I am Teochew…June Lim, Joyce Tan, Mary Chan, Gingko Tay, Melissa Khng, Terence, Ronald Lee….some more who huh?

    Ah Nee

  26. Terence, no problem! I will bring my I/C to you for authentication. What, Ang Pow only $1.20? How can? That isn’t even enough to buy me a bowl of gingko nut dessert. Today’s Ang Pow market price is at least S$2.00. If I show you my I/C, you see more than just my birth date.

Ah Nee, to me, respect is a two-way traffic. My grand parents’ and parents’ generations might be otherwise. Ang Pow and exchange of mandarins represent good fortune. Young and old believe this gesture brings good fortune to the giver and receiver.

Hah, you chose to be a ni-buay lau-kau (year-end Monkey in Teochew) than a Rooster, ai why so impatient? No matter, I am still your senior. On the other hand, you are married, I am a single single. So I still get an Ang Pow from you, heehee. In return, I will present you a pair of Mandarins for good luck and prosperity. But you and I can dispense with this “custom” lah. We just exchange CNY greetings and mandarin oranges okay?

Ah Nee, I agree with you. If revealing personal data like that in the forum, it’s a very very private issue. I don’t feel comfortable too. Anyway, just do whatever is comfortable. It’s a happy occasion, let us all celebrate and be merry. Don’t let anything unpleasant spoil the festive moods. Cheers!

  27. Eh how many oranges must I bring if I go har? Looks like alot are my “Pi” leh..some time people don’t return their oranges, then you left with little to go around – looks like we are all there to exhange oranges, I give Ah Nee, Ah Nee give to Terence & so forth… ha.ha… in canto is “wan cart”…make sure the oranges are still edible after that…ha..ha..

  28. Hi All

E simplest n easiest. Just bring 2 mandarin oranges deposit it in a bx at e table U will b sitting. When lunch ends, just pick up 2 n bring home.

Sounds like xchanging presents at Xmas. Rite?

  29. Hi Terence

I love tim sum very much but have to call it a miss this time. Will be in USA by this date. If the date is earlier sure will go to have the wonderful tim sum. Will be away for more than a month.
Anyway, enjoy yrself SHCians at the lunch.
    Gwen.

  30. Hi Yew Kwong,

On #50, if I did what you suggest, to my uncle, he will kill me. Bring the Mandarin oranges, and put them into a box? No lah, let’s add a bit more culture to the occasion.

So, what zodiac animal are you? Same as me?

    Terence Seah

  31. Hi guys!!

This offer closes by Jan 31st so I still have time to decide… if Ron Lai doesn’t turn up then I may qualify to be the oldest guy there and, hence receive all the ang pows and oranges there!

But, unfortunately, Fortunate Restaurant is not my favourite pick for tim sum and also because the staff push you to take the many ala carte dishes which can then add up the bill.

I don’t mean to throw cold water over the venue, but this is just a caution.

However, this pig may be attending even if it means that I might be roasted!

  32. Mary, Limpei lau gow, born 1956, you teacher, you can count my age.

    #62 “………the staff push you……..”.

With 22 SHCians and still counting, the staff push, we push back. They & us will be abt the same in numbers but we’re united, will push harder, push & push till they are outside the restaurant, we close the door and hoooray, it’s all us and ours.

Then another round of pushing when the polis come (but we might lose this time, they carry guns, ours are only water guns, can match but cant fight).

  33. Tim,

Very funny indeed. I am having lunch now, before I turn up for today’s gathering.

Great story teller. Roland is very strict. I don’t think he will let you upset the restaurant.

    Terence Seah

  34. Terence, Roland has been liberated after joining SHC (and knowing tim).

I’ll tell you secretly, yes bring yr ears over…………..”I am taking Roland to roll on the biggest geylang bed with the broadest of broads, you wanna come?”

  35. Hahahaha, Margaret Margaret, the bed I got Roland to roll on may be bugger than big but why do you want to be on it and btwn the broads?

Oooops, correction, you meant “boards!” Ok, the accounts for yr red ears, fair enuf.
