Chinese New Year wishes

The mood is here.  And as SHCians, we have lots of memories, with each of us having at least 45 years celebrating this long Chinese history and Lunar New Year festival.  Flash backs to the days igniting crackers on the ground, giving oranges to our parents, pasting red decors everywhere around the house and giving angpows to the young ones.

You may like to send your New Year wishes to someone in the club.  Go ahead.  Don’t be shy.  This forum accepts all languages and dialects.

  7. Thank you Terence for bringing us a new & very lively CNY song altho the cuties in there wd hv done better if they din overact their cuteness which is in-born like you always hv. (Will also try out Sue & Dolly’s song leads).

See, you’re again cute with yr opening remarks ” Flash backs to the days igniting crackers……”

Bcos of people who ignited instead of lighting or letting off firecrackers, many houses caught fire. The last straw came when a polisman had his head bashed with a durian at Lor Lew Lian for stopping this act outside of a designated area. Ignition of firecrackers had to be banned and so did the milder form of lighting & letting-off.

    Rat Year.

Will there be enough Pied Pipers on standby should the rats become a menance?

Or will it be a case of “Cant beat them, join them” with everyopne turning into rats?

    Shall see…………………

  8. Hi Sue, here’s Sue too…. hmm..don’t think we hv met. You must be cantonese if I am not wrong. Hope to meet you in the next outing. I understand there’s another Susan Tan… Gosh, think we need to differentiate when signing off. I will use Suzhang… & you, Sue?

  9. Hi Suzhang,

Thanks for your quick note. I am not a cantonese, but a teochew Peranakan Chinese. Yes, you are right, we have not met yet, and I would love to meet up with you nice SHCians prior to the D & D which I’d already registered.

I do follow-up with SHC latest posts, and also browse thru’ those nice photos/pictures of you SHCians posted online.

Till then, Sue, we shall meet someday!

    Cheers!
    Sue

  10. Oops Sue, I was wrong then. So you are a true teochew Peranakan ya? Do you know how to cook Peranakan food ? I wish to learn if you care to share..he..he.. Be looking forward to seeing you at the D&D… or maybe earlier during the CNY gathering ??

Yeap, hope to meet you & other Susan in the near future..

    Cheerio,

    Suzhang

  11. Oops!!

Make sure you’ve got the right Sue or you’ll be sued!

Hi Sue… you say you’re a Teochew Peranakan? There is really no such thing… what I mean is the real Peranakans (the nyonyas and babas) are from the Hokkien provinces. Many have later inter-married other dialect groups and a very successful union is between Teochews and Hokkiens.

So, a “real” Teochew Peranakan did not exist in the original context. But, of course, I’m splitting hairs and, if you can really cook a smashing Peranakan feast, I’ll be the first to acknowledge you as a real Peranakan!

As the Peranakans say: Selamat Tahun Baru China!

  12. Hi Ken,

You are right in saying that the ‘real Peranakans are those from the Hokkien provinces. However, my late dad, who was a typical ‘baba’ from Melaka, had his identity card written as ‘teochew’ in the dialect group…so I assumed that could be a typographical error…

I was born here and must admit am not a very good cook, just managed to whip up a few teochew dishes, instead of those mouth-watering peranakan food e.g. babi ponteh, buah keluark etc..

Will get to meet you guys someday soon!

    Cheers!
    Sue
