SHC March monthly gathering – Sat, 15 Mar 2008

Hi all SHCians,

For the first time, we will combine a monthly gathering, with another activity "SHC Flea mart".  Originally, the plan was to hold the monthly gathering at the Han’s cafe and Cake house at Great Eastern Centre.  But, since then, we have now firmed the location of the 1st SHC Flea mart,  at Bali Lane, we shall combine the two events.  The hope is that once a year, we will combine one monthly gathering with the SHC Flea Mart.

We have a 99% chance these two events are ON.  The likely dates are 8, 9 or 15 March, afternoon.  Please note these dates as the announcement will be made very very soon.

This monthly gathering strictly for SilverHairsClub members only.  Flea Mart buyers will come from members and the public.

  2. Woke up this morning in Bangkok, and decided to start thinking about the topics of interests for this SHC monthly gathering. Here goes:

    The times are:

  3. Hi Terence,

See you are in Bangkok, how to reach you? I’m here too! I need to talk to you urgently – please call you have my number right?

    Grace Kok

  4. Ooops! Date and time coincide with monthly cycling. Much as I would like to attend, but I can’t tear myself apart. Have to miss this gathering again… and the first SHC Flea Mart. Sob, sob…

  5. Hi KT @#2,

Can you advise availability of time slots? If possible, we will go ahead and use place as scheduled.

If not, we would run without any topics. Need your confirmation, for our planning purposes.

    Terence Seah

  6. Terence @ # 5

    Time slots are OK.

    Suggest a short talk on
“Staying on top of the Budget and CPF”

It will cover the following areas.

    (a) The Budget

    (b) CPF and implications

    (c) How to compute your annuity payout and manage your CPF.

    (d) Strategies to stay on top of the Real Economy

If the first topic is too heavy, we can perphaps take on the topic
“In Search od the Singapore’s National Dish”

We will summarize the forum feedback and research on the topic. We can also conduct a fun interactive workshop

    (a) To vote for a National Dish

    (b) To help create a wishlist for the ideal National Dish concept.

  7. Hi KT,

    You have suggested two topics:

    1. Staying on top of the budget and CPF.

    2. Singapore’s National Dish.

Excellent start. Now, let’s see who wants to participate in these two topics. Then, we can have them as one or two topics of the day. Please note you have either to talk or moderate the topic.

    Terence Seah

  8. Hi everybody,

As you would have read on this forum, the majority of SHCians would like SilverHairsClub to remain as it is now ie free and easy, very much an online forum and club, and meeting as and when an event suits a group of members, organised by the Event Organiser.

On the issue of registering or not registering SilverHairsClub, we would make the decision after 31 Mar 2008, as last planned.

Many SHCians find our organisation style strange, haphazard, impromptu and not systematic. Probably, the word is disorganised. To be frank and honest, I have always preferred some form of disorganisation. I see this as a great way to communicate and meet new friends.

From time to time, we get into secenarios whereby we cannot organise certain events, because we are not registered.

I would like to suggest a topic during this March gathering, entitled “Where should SilverHairsClub be heading towards?”. I am not expert with club activities and directions. So, your feedback and participation would be valuable.

Anybody likes to second this topic for discussion? I shall be the moderator of this session. We have 45 mins.

    Terence Seah

  9. Yes, i would like to discuss on “where should SilverHairsClub be heading towards”. I would like to see more social events being organised, and perhaps we can form sub-committees of the club, to cater to various interest. As i am very passionate about singing, dancing & music, i would like to see more of such activities. I go to SRC & club 5 on a weekly basis, and it would be good for more people to join in. Any interested guys?

  10. Lydia, good to read you again.

Any soccer fanatic, like me, will be happy to answer yr “where should SilverHairsClub be heading towards”…the heading has to be towards goal which must be the objective of any institution’s existence.

SHC’s goal is clear : let it be a place for fellowship, and believe me you, some hv actually found their fellows and hv shipped away together. Happy for them.

Among the dedicated, DanH has done much for SHC in giving us many dancing opportunities and badminton.

Not unexpectedly tho, after a while interest waned and he’s at wits end as to what more he needed to do to re-ignite the interest.

Most of us hv our own exciting ideas but find it difficult to raise our hands & step forward to organise the activities.

Even if an organiser is found, it may be aborted for lack of interest/support.

(Benson Koh’s kukup trip, at the last count, had only 1 taker……Benson Koh himself).

I find singing enjoyable and relaxing, and why not….if you raise yr hands?

  11. Hi Tim,

I spend a whole afternoon listening to Korean songs. There is always something on my mind when it comes to singing, and especially with you in mind. And this is Hokkien Karoake. Havent given up on this, but it will happen one day, maybe at the second Flea mart.

    Terence Seah

  12. Terence, KT is unflappable and you are dogmatic & determined. good for both of you.

If it’s for a good cause, I will join the liverpoolians in singing, you wont walk alone……………

  13. Tim,

Don’t walk alone. Take a hike with Goldilocks in the woods. Take a long walk. Leave the three bears alone.

It is too early to go bear baiting. Its still Feb winter. Give the poor furry things a chance to sleep through a longer winter.

  14. Hi Lydia,

Thank you for your support to run the topic “where should SilverHairsClub be heading towards”.

I do have a question. When you say more social activities, do you mean more dancing sessions or more get-to-know one another type of activities.

Anymore with comments on this topic?

    Terence Seah

  15. Lydia @ 10

I share Terence’s question as well.

In SHC, all activities are lead by volunteer members. I believe we dont really need 2 form sub-committee unless we are organising special event like D n D 2008.

If you would like 2 lead some social activities like singing, dancing n clubbing, we have many interested members here who are ready 2 gv U all the support.

  16. Lydia @10,

I oso agreed with YewKwong dat sub comm is a not a must but rather we shd hv sum1 who is willing 2 plan tis kind of social gathering n post in d forum so dat other members can join oso. Just like last yr, we got Lily to organise 1st disco nite out at Zouk for members and subsequently, sum of these members wen on disco at St James n Pump room. Since u r in2 social dancing, u can organize 1 tis kind of nite out for those interested members, ai mai? Of cos, in most SHC outing, we normally see more gals den guys participating hor..

  17. Many clubs are social in nature. They are as good as their current set of activities. Don’t expect any permanence lest you will be disappointed. Everything is transient.

Some clubs have clubhouses with special purpose rooms. All it means is that certain activities are facilitated. It does not however means that it is cheaper or better.

Take dancing for example. One could probably get better facilities, company and teachers for less costs if one sign up to a dance studio. Rather than to join a general social class and then sign up to its dancing lessons.

It is the same with life. You get much more out of it if you know exactly what you want. And pursue your interests with a focus. But few do. You can’t have breadth and depth at the same. If you just want to try everything, you will never fanthom the depth of experience of any one.

So it is with a SHC. Its existing general agenda has worked well. Volunteers emerge from time to time to create new activities and take over the interest from old. The value that SHC delivers is not in terms of permanence or specialization. The value is delivered if it does things it does today but more effectively and efficiently.

All the excellent clubs in Singapore have a very strong corporate culture in them. SHC itself can stay unregistered and free. But to fiercely safeguard this independence it needs to have a corporate dimension. The corporate arm legitimizes many of its activities and provide it with a sense of financial discipline, legal coverage and corporate governance. The leaders and organizers of the social component will also play a corporate role.

All successful organisations work out of this same blueprint. Take a good example. Even the Vatican is no exception.

  18. SHC will, in due time, come to a cross-road, with enough wanting it to stay status quo matched by an opposing number clamouring for it to be more structured and guided by principles of good governance and accountability.

The debate then will be interesting. Heee, I wish I’ll hv the casting vote when the day of reckoning finally comes…………..

  19. Tim @ #22

Before we make you our superdelegate, we want to know how you stand. Whither will thy cast thou vote.

It is clear as B’rack and White. The vote right now is split between those who think they know and those who know they don’t.

    Hee hee.

  20. The father cat & the mother cat are still in their early stage of romance so that’s no way I can let the kitten out of the bag befoe it’s even conceived.

At this juncture, my heart tells me 1 thing; my head, another.

I hv seen the free-n-easy manner it’s presently being operated – a bit haphazrad at times but it brings out the best of organising skills.

I hv also heard of the arguments for an organised & structured entity.

Let the final showdown come – if it does come – and see who makes the best debater.

  21. Tim @#24

Its OK. Make me look good in a suit.

I’ll tell them at SCorebot tonite that its so easy that even Ah Beng can trade against heavyweights and win. You’ll help me make good on my word.

You may get a free fine wine tasting session for tonite only. Depends on how Beng you’ll be tonite.

  22. It’s to yr credit if I come as Ah Beng representing Kwek L Beng. However, the less than flattery truth is this beng me doesnt wear socks, with a huge tee hanging on me, much like the drape over the casket…….

Still lustily luscious & not abt to change yr mind?

The SAF is taking on Sengkang at Jln Besar, and the money to be made there is surer than sure.

You’re in time to transfer yr $ to me to invest on yr behalf……..at least 300% returns guaranteed on yr investment, me taking a token cut of 30% on yr nett.

    Tony Leung has sen his.

    You ai mai?

  23. Hi KT, Andrew and Tim,

I guess you have some ideas on “How SHC can move forward”. Think about it further, and as we are having this topic for this monthly gathering.

    Terence Seah

  24. Hi everybody,

I am moderating the topic “Where should SilverHairsClub be heading towards”. Please come to this gathering, to contribute your suggestions.

As you may have been following up on this forum, the majority of members (Probably 90%) prefer the “status quo” position of SHC. There is probably a 10% who feels that some form of structure and organisation is needed. You can contribute your ideas here or at the coming monthly gathering.

Based on feedback from you to-date, it is likely that at the end of March 2008, we will probably decide to remain status quo, and abiding by our taboos of no politics, sex, religion, race, direct selling and MLM.

    Come and give your viewpoint.

    Terence Seah

  25. Hi Terence

Please register us, Alice and I, we will be at Bali Lane on the 15th to join in the meeting, as you are having an interesting topic on the agenda, at the same time we will give our support to the flea market project.

    Ron n Alice Lai

  26. Hiya all!

I am a bit confused… but I’d better book my place for the coming monthly gathering.

Is the flea market on at the same time??

And is the gathering time at 4.00pm??

And how can the guys at the flea market attend the gathering??

    AArrghh!!!

  27. Hi Kenneth #46,

We had not had a Sat monthly gathering for a long time. This timing is especially useful to many who worked Mon to Fri.

For this event, we time it with the SHC Flea Mart. Jie is in charge. Most SHC members should start to come in from 4pm, although we the Flea mart, I guess many will come in at 3pm. Members may of course come in anytime from 3pm to 10pm, just to chit chat and meet other SilverHairs. Some cycling team members will come after their session at the East Coast.

Ideas for topics will close on Tue Mar 11. Then we shall set the timing for each of the topics.

The monthly gathering is a great way to meet new and more SilverHairs friends.

Joy, please come asap, before the Fleas run away.

    Terence Seah

  28. Hi Lina

Most probably Molly & me will also join you at the flea market cum gathering. But we are there just to look-see look-see not going to lelong-lelong hor. :)

    C U then.

  29. Last night, we finalise the arrangements for the March monthly gathering. Here are the updates on the topics:

    1. Singapore’s National Dish. Time: 4pm – 4.45 pm. Moderator: KT Wong

    2. “Where should SilverHairsClub be heading towards?”. Time: 7pm – 7.45pm. Presenter and moderator: Terence Seah

    3. “Staying on top of the budget and CPF”. Time: 8pm – 8.45 pm. Presenter and moderator:
    KT Wong

    4. “How do retirees spend their SilverHairs years fruitfully in Singapore”. Speakers being finalised. Will advise.

All topics/discussions will be conducted on the top floor (1st floor). Please be seated before the start times. If you have an idea, there is still time, please contact me via this forum.

    Terence Seah

  30. Hi Suzhang,

After cycling, won’t we be smelly. If only we can shower at scorebot. Now I am wondering if I want to cycle or not. Also, if I should bring my bicycle, I’ll have to push my bike everywhere, otherwise it’ll get stolen. Will have to think about that. See you soon.

  31. Lina @ #60

BTW, will we be renting van? Any van will do. No need Merc or BMW. Cannot bring armoured car through customs before MS is confined back to patchwork quilt. For eternity.

    Uhh… dirty and stolen ?? …..

Simple. Just rent a caravan with sauna. And keep bike and soak-in on the way back.

Not every trip. But you must try this once in your life. Mountain biking in the Alps. Then you have lived.

  32. You can now promote and we will help to market your product. You need to register once to create a e-flea market space for your self and put in as many products as you wish. You can put in description, pictures or video. Sell your whole house or create an entire industry if you wish.

Just register and simply follow instructions at
    http://www.dowindowshopping.com/dsupcrafrm.do?refid=FLM5&sid=5&type=3&dslogo=yes

The whole world can then beat at your door on the live website at
    http://www.dowindowshopping.com/
You should find your product under the SHC Flea Market listing at the right.

  33. Hi KT

    @#62

I might have created Two similar accounts in’..dowindowshopping’. Could you delete one of them? (user name: busybee)

How do we list our products for sale?

    JassmineT

  34. Alamak Lina #60,

After I have decided to go cycling…you’re now changing your mind? Don’t worry lah, bring extra tee to change and even deodorant to apply before going flea market. Anyway, am sure over at the flea market, not everyone will smell nice after standing from 3pm onwards… so you will blend in even without changing lah…ha.ha..

  35. Lina, you dare ask to bathe in the heavily wired-up scorebot with cameras everywhere, you siao huh ?

Try #12-101 Landmark……guaranteed (and this guaranty means what it really means) no camera and come with a jaga me at the bathroom making sure no one watches while you cleanup.

  36. Hi Tim,

Scorebot where got cameras? You pulling my leg? The problem is that if we shower there, scorebot will be flooded, right DennisH. As for #12-101 Landmark..hum.. no thanks and thanks if you rent it for us to shower.

So, I guess Suzhang, we’ll have to come to scorebot smelly, sweaty and attract lots of fleas.

  37. Lina, Scorebot is as much without a camera as yr toyota is without a steering wheel.

There’s a lot more of you I’d like to pull than pulling yr leg which is already long & sexy.

Scorebot is brilliant : whatever water you use will be recycled so flooding is never a worry.

Since I dont do any recycling at #12-101, thanks for forewarning me of yr flooding propensity. Accordingly, the rent will hv to be very high, high enough to build a reservoir to keep yr water wherever it comes from.

  38. Hi Lina.

Thanks for your warm welcome note. I would surely come to know you people better,

By the way which unit in Bali Lane are we holdng the meeting?

    Regards

    King Seng

  39. Hi Tim #68,

Ha…ha.. You mean the water at scorebot is recycled to make the coffee downstairs!! Wait till the cafe tenant get to hear about this. hee..hee..

    Hi King Seng#69,

See you then at Bali Lane. You would be able to smell us from a distance..ha ha..

  40. As a starter promotion, we have put up a little announcement of our Flea Mart in the Straits Times Classifieds, for this Friday and Saturday. For two days of 3 liner ads, the cost is about $75.

Let us how it goes, if it works and we can finetune it for future Flea mart advertising.

    Terence Seah

  41. Oh, you lucky people. You can be part of history in making this coming Sat.

USD $10,000 Euro-USD trading account can be yours for a trade. Scorebot is pleased to sponsor the first ever competition and prize of its kind.

    A Singapore National Dish Contest.

All you need to do is to buy a meal on the Sat SHC Flea Market at 18 Bali Lane. Vote for your favorite candidate for the Singapore National Dish. And you stand to win the first trade profit or the “first blood” from a USD $10,000 on the following Monday!

See details in a separate post. Someone must win. Will it be you??

  42. Our schedule for the monthly event is now being slotted with topics. I have asked Robert Quek to give us an overview of How he spends and manages his retirement in Singapore.

Robert and Kristy are one great example of a retired entity in Singapore. As you all know, Robert is reputed for his close participation in seminars and concerts. All basically free.

He gives us 15 mins at the 5pm slot.

    Terence Seah

  43. The lucky winner of the Singapore National Dish Contest will now win the first profitable trade made by autotrading a full USD $200,000 limit account.

Someone must win. So make sure that you come to make your vote for the Singapore National Dish.

The revision upwards is made by courtesy of Scorebot, the sponsor of this event.

  44. Lina @#71, you siao jien duo kwai (saw little, scared too much)..heard of newater so instead of buying newater can astute bizmen do it one better?

  45. Haha,

So Tim must have seen the world and reach the pinnacle of a mountain to mention : ???? (shao-4 jian-4 duo-1 guai-4).

Good to use standard hanyu pinyin, fiend or would-be friend. Hope you are/would develop to be the latter.

Btw, have you been to the Newater plant near Bedok or Hyflux desalination plant in Tuas?

Let us focus on the key theme in this thread, boleh? Too much distraction is not meaningful or helpful.

  46. Andrew, you sure or not? You mean you need to reach the pinnacle of a mountain to find common sense huh? Dont frighten me hor.

Limpeh nvr learn standard hamyu pinyin so just any old how humtum…….you managed to catch it so you hv again scaled the pinnacle, congrats !

Me fiend to many; friend to few and that makes me more sought after than one who vaccums up everyone, everything in sight as friends.

Heeee, you dont dictate where this thread shall move after you hv slept on it long enough……………

  47. Terence
Save the unforeseen, I’ll be happy to attend SHC’s monthly social gathering-cum-flea market event this Saturday, 3.00-5.00pm.
    Frank

  48. Dear Terence,

Regarding the discussion on Sat at 7pm “Where should SHC be heading towards?”….

How about a related topic “Is it time for a name change ” e.g. the letters SHC could still be retained but changed to something else e.g. “Social Harmony Club” to reflect the socialising & harmonious activities that the club encourages, of course with the age group parameters still in place.

Personally, I think the name “SHC” has already garnered enough goodwill…we could maybe have a contest similar to the WKT’s National Dish where members can come up with various other names for SHC to be narrowed to the 5 most popular, that will be put to a vote at the next April meeting…Maybe we will still end up with Silver Hairs Club, who knows?

    Any thoughts from fellow SHCians?

  49. Hi everybody, attending this monthly gathering,

When you arrive, please contact Alice Seah. Alice has accepted to handle the registration desk. Please get a sticky label from Alice, write your name (big big so every body can read) on the label, and stick it to on your blouse or shirt. Also, please make sure Alice will tick your name, against our attendees list.

Have fun, and enjoy the gathering and Flea Mart. Hope the sky is clear on Saturday.

    Terence Seah

  50. Bright beautiful sunshine today (till now at least) and may the sky be even kinder to us tomorrow………..

“…we could maybe have a contest ……members can come up with various other names for SHC ………Maybe we will still end up with Silver Hairs Club…”

That’w hy people like to do the treadmill…….working a sweat out without going places. Or to say it less kindly, much ado abt nothing………………

  51. There is a lobby to change to “Sweet Hainanese Chicken”. SHC the Made-in-Singapore Global Franchise debuts on Sat.

Col Sanders move over. Once we can tuck Dennis into a white suit.

  52. it’s already 2.5 hours past noon and thank rainmaker is still cycling at tg pengarang, unlikely to return before sunday so looks quite safe.

Anyhow, vendors dont hv to worry, really. Even if it rains, they still can do their sales, albeit from under the tables.

With such perseverance, I’ll kick anyone who still wants to haggle for a bargain……..

  53. Jon @ #84

    Good idea.

Here’s another. Vote for a nickname for Ah Ter. No need to play-off for prize. USD $200K straight to account. Looking for sponsors…

But none can beat this one. Vote for the cover girl for the new “Sweet Hainanese Chicken” SHC fast food chain. Non-Hainanese members can qualify. Only need to repeat the following line to judges in Hainanese

    “I love SHC”

Prize : Million $ enforsements and ad contracts.

    Hee hee

  54. Jon Ong @#84

Yes, it’s time to consider a name change. The present one is literal, non imaginative and boring.(personal opinion).

Let’s have a more imaginative, ( poetical? romantic? )and nicer name, please.

    JassmineT

  55. Jas @ #95

    Give us a shot.

    Here’s one for the road.

    Sexy Hot Clubbers (SHC)

    Referring to moi’, of course.

    (French “moi'” for “me”)

  56. Hi Jasmine,

I welcome the suggestion to consider a name change. Sometime ago, in th early days of SHC, there was a similar suggestion. Please do a search on this forum, to read the earlier discussions.

One of the concerns then was the cost of marketing and rebranding the name. But, go ahead, what names do you have in mind? Other members, please have your say too.

    Terence Seah

  57. We hv bn debating numerous tx on tis name chng but sumhow we always ended using SHC as in Silverhairs Club. For me, if not 4 tis name – Silverhairs Club dat I first saw Terence put in Singnet, I definitely will not b bothered 2 look in2 it in d 1st plc as at 1 guess I noe dat it is for Silverhairs group but youth or golden groups, rite?? So I m vry comfy wif d current name lor..

  58. Hi Terence,

I will be attending the monthly tomm. Saturday as mentioned in earlier comment #66. Pls include my name in the list of registrants coming.

  59. Dolly # 99 Agreed with you whole-heartedly, any names change, without the work “Silverhairs” incorporated, will loose its meaning, and the age of 45 goes with it.

    RONLAI

  60. The change of name to suit modern times hd been raised a number of times. Anyway I still like it the way its been called “Silver Hairs Club”. A club tat stands out distinctively among the many clubs in SG, wif wide varities of core n sub activities to keep members in active participation, we are proud to hold membership to tis Singapore’s Hottest Club.

  61. Hi All, Re SHC, the contenders so far as follows…

    1. Silver Hairs Club (current name)

    2. Social Harmony Club

    3. Sexy Hot Club

    4. Singapore’s Hottest Club

    Another contribution…

    5. Senior Hotties Club…conjures cool & hip image of active agers having lots of fun & frolic & passionate interests in the club events.

Dolly/Ron…How about pt.5 above? It would also have the implicit age group category.

Jasmine/Steven, any suggestions from your good selves also?

Any other contributions to think of a fun name for SHC?

The current name is great by itself, but we will only really know after it has been put to a vote by all…

  62. Wow Jonathan, u reli can come up so many names at 1 go..

Vry sori, Pt 5, dat name, not in my preference – Snr Hotties Club: I tend 2 link tis name wif Hooters, d oli diff is dat we r ‘lkk’ lor..

Nyway, like u said, it wuld b good 4 all 2 cast a vote lor.. I still vote Silverhairs Club lor, wat say u har, Ron and YewKwong?

  63. Jon @#104

Here’s what came to my mind immediately after I saw your list.

    1. Silver(y) Tints (symbol for hairs!)

    2. Silver(y) Glints (better than ‘tints’- suggests li4 hai4 – formidable)

    3. Silver(y) Glows (many possibilities suggested by ‘glows’)

    4. Silver Hares club (to retain initials SHC -cute, eh? )

    5. Silver Bamboos (interesting)

    6. Autumn Leaves (personal favourite)

But the best is yet to come, I’m sure.

    Terence @#98

If ‘SHC’ is already a brand name, then we can keep the initials but change the word (s) they represent. EG. #4 above. This will of course be more difficult/challenging than thinking of a new name with no such restriction.

    JassmineT

  64. Boring…..

When we makeover, we brighten up our image. Not bury it. Who wants to belong to “Autumn Leaves” or “Sunset Hobo’s Coven”

How about “So Hot and Chic”.

    Moi’ again.

  65. Hi Jassmine Teo at 109,

    Pt. 4 . suggested name
    for S.H.C.

    Silver Hares Club. No! no!

    Hares ? ( wild rabbits )

Aaa, this sounds more like a playboy club leh.

    Terence would not never allow.

No SEX pls. on this forum. Tarboo.

  66. Hi all,

What does it matter what name a club has, it is more what a club stands for, promotes and encourages that matter.

In case some of the new member forgets the concept and history why Terence and Company set this club up, it is time they read the facts first.

My first impression of the name SHC and the Logo was that it was so appropriate, as it sounds and had the right feel for its purpose and image.
It does represent that SHC is a noble, humble club that accepts members who are ready to discover the meaning of retirement ,discovering new interests and most importantly accept the phase of life that they are going through.
So having Silver hair is part of that necessary qualification, sort of what turning 21 and getting that freedom.
The first logo has more significance as it shows the prime spot of Singapore and also where Raffles first landed and the business , life centre of Singapore. SHC is well coined name, with that silver lining and we have to be proud of what we are , that we are going through another stage in life.

Why use names sounding like a teenage club , for others to laugh when they only see Aunties and Uncles, it only shows we are not prepared to grow old, wisely and respectfully accepting our silver hairs, losing hairs, having move wrinkles etc. ?

Lastly, I should also think that the founders of the club deseved to be consulted for any name change, as they did start with the right concept, motivation and dedication. I also like that losing hair logo, good caricature of who we are, and the fact that the founders are ready to laugh at themselves even when losing hair.

  67. I still prefer Silver Hairs Club. Why all the ‘trendy’, sexy, funky names? In the first place, why do we need a change in name?

‘Silver Hares’??? Jasmine. We are done with procreating!! hahaha. I should think we are not going at it like rabbits any more, or are we??? Just kidding, ;-)

“Sexy”, “Hotties”, Jonathan, I haven’t met you yet. Are you talking about yourself? Hahaha. Will you be at the meeting today? Must look out for a ‘sexy, hot silver haired guy’, ;-) Ok, just kidding again.

When I first saw the name, my reaction was, ‘Why Silver Hairs? why not Silver Threads?’ .Then I thought of the initials, “STC”, images of buses came to mind. Remember the Singapore Traction Company?

Although I think ‘Silver Threads’ sound a little better than ‘Silver Hairs’, my vote is still for Silver Hairs Club!

  68. Well said, Ronald Wie.

Significance, meaning, strategic purpose, history and clear missions and thoughtful relations are the key contributing factors why I join.

Change for the sake of change to be in the “trendy flow of the changing winds” impresses “instability”.

Silver Hairs is a sure noble and worthy path in everyone life.

How one sails through this phase before golden and autumn phases with meaning, dignity, value, virtues, purpose and significance are what matter.

SHC in its original context is unique and symbolic of a purposeful and meaningful place of life.

Count ourselves fortunate and blessed if we are at this stage healthy, happy, contented and have worthwhile friendship and varied live, work and play activities.

    Long live Silver Hairs Club.

  69. KTWong,
“Hot and Chic”. I laughed out loud when I read this. You must surely be kidding! I have to admit, you ARE quite good looking, but…but…. hot and sheek?

Matt Damon, Orlando Bloom, Harrison Ford, Julia Roberts, Shakira …..Now, these are. Not us.

  70. I don’t have any Club membership, only SilverHairsClub and my family members, relatives & friends are aware that I am a SHCians, so don’t change the name, so as not to confuse them. During one of my family gathering, I overheard my young niece commented; SilverHairsClub……aunty Ah nee, all old people in your club wan ???? he…he…he… she was right. Anyway I quite like the name SilverHairsClub. :)

    Ah Nee

  71. Long live Ah Nee- LEE.

Your niece must be very young. Perhaps, to those below 20, anything above 45 is old; it is more than double their numerical imagination with figures within their impressionable minds.

An old classmate, a top boy when young, lost his mind due to a relationship failure. He aged when he was in his 20s, sad but a real case.

We passed through infant and very young stages too. For me when I was 10, I considered those above 75 as old when I visited Chinatown and met my grandparents, my father was in his mid 50s. I considered him middle-aged, not old. He worked and had an useful life till his 80s.

I thought of Mr David Marshall as fiery and dynamic then, I looked to him as an energetic and solidly vibrant man when I saw him campaigning; young and learned for a man in his 50s.

Perhaps today’s benchmark, old refers to “senile” purposeless people without meaning. So move on and onto beautiful, thoughtful and purposeful life.

Numerical number is a mere number.

  72. AndrewK, you got the point, age is just a mere number. I like this, quote: “So move on and onto beautiful, thoughtful and purposeful life”. Long live all SHCians, “Wang shui…wang shui..wang wang shui” he….he…he… :)

Ooops…got to get ready to go to EC for cycling follow by Fleas Mart.

    Ah Nee

  73. Ah Nee

That is an imperial greetings : ???.

????, ????,?????? ( change ten thousand times without departing from the original aim and essential stand).

????(Good spirit exist for many centuries); remain fresh forever.

Jane and Ah Nee, long live too! probably ?? too, ???.

  74. See how figurative language can rouse the imagination. Steven @111 and MaryC at #113 immediately associated ‘hares’ with playboy bunnies and rabbits breeding respectively when I had only thoughts of cute Bugs Bunny!

A name, in my opinion, is VERY important and as far as possible, should be auspicious, or have positive associations/connotations. A special interest group’s name, if a good one, reflects not only the nature of the club, but also its spirit. I feel the name “Silver Hairs Club” is lacking in spirit.

From my impromptu list, “Silver Bamboos” seems to be ‘unscathed’. Is it too boring for comments or has it passed muster?

    JassmineT

  75. KT @# 110

Don’t think of end Autumn for then it’s the onset of Winter. Think instead of the start and mid-Autumn when the trees (leaves) burst into vibrant colours. If this is not bright enough, what is?

No ‘sunset’- that’s the winter phase of life. But why ‘Hobo’ and ‘Coven’ – seem like a misrepresentation of ourselves.

    JassmineT

  76. Mary @ # 115

    Hail.

Ah… but you have only seen me in SHC. My campaign manager, makeover artist and image consultant just reminded me again late last night at SHC meet to try merge inconspicuously into the crowd. Be one of the people. Act poor, talk dumb and look foggy.

    Hee-hee.

We live in parallel worlds. Maybe one day you can catch me under different cirumstances.

Hot lights, loud music, flashing hormones, tight jeans and Tim’s chest hair toupee.

  77. Hi Jasmmine Teo at 113,

…..when I had only thoughts of cute Bugs Bunny!

We are not longer cute, but lao cute – quoted by brother Tim Liu.

  78. Hi Terence,WongKY,Dennis,Jie /others ,

Aren’t we blessed to have such a fine sunny day to visit our interesting 1st.SHC fleas market and National Dish competition all in one.

We also had a wonderful time and fun having dinner and chit chatting at the nearby Blu Jaz pub and restaurant.

Thanks to all the organisers for having these 3 SHC events one after another.

Killing 3 birds with one stone.

    Thanks again,
    Steven Chan

  79. Jas @ #132

” If this is not bright enough, what is?”

Uhhh…. we can switch on the lights?? …

We perceive reality through our senses. We can change the world by how we are determined to see it.

Look on the bright side. There will always be light.

  80. Andrew,

How are we suppose to play your LD.

Put a finger on the rotating disc, close eyes and Ohmmmm….. ??

How about giving us some flashbacks
“Reminescent of a Flea Marketeer – the True Riches-to-Rags Story”

    Hee-hee

  81. KT at #137

Put the LDs onto a DVD/LD player and start to enjoy the musicals or concerts.

If you need one DVD/LD player, believe there are some shops at Sim Lim Square still sell them.

Haha, a wonderful expereince to be a three-hour flea marketeer first hand after almost 40 years selling such wares at a Geylang Methodist Church fun fair.

Re-couped overheads, dinner money for two, two-way passage home and some change left. Very contented and grateful for all patronage, new friends and fellowship.

With some entreprenuership, might consider move further to do re-cycle large scale economies. We have successful recycled water to Newwater and recycled paper to tissue/pomelo papers.

That Chinese lady in recycled papers business is now the richest lady in China.

Good aspiring and motivating business stories for any Silver Hairean during our summer years to move forward to innovative business ventures when we think and move out of a box.

  82. A @ #139

    Yo, Tim

Now you know why there is a finger hole in the Bento box. It is to practise your finger to play the LD.

And what is this about breach of contract to sell LD player…. Do we split one or two hundred million down the middle?

    Hee-hee

  83. Where was the consideration?

For goodwill and friendship, can consider one- million Indonesian Rupiah meal with you, you name the place and time, lah.

Have to go for lunch meeting soon.

  84. KT Wong,
“Hot lights, loud music, flashing hormones, tight jeans and Tim’s chest hair toupee.”

Well, yesterday was a very hot sunny day, so there was your ‘hot light’.

The music at that place down the row from Scorebot had loud music.

‘Flashing hormones’. Yep, they probably flash by only occasionally now, right?

‘Tight jeans’. Ouch, those poor swimmers, but they are not needed now, at this age or maybe I’m wrong. Look at Cary Grant, a father at 80!

‘Tim’s chest hair toupe’ HAHAHA! Probably not enough to cover your receding hairline.

But I think it would be quite entertaining to see you in that light, hehe, perhaps at the D n D? KTWong aka John Travolta???

  85. Hi KT @ 144,

Before I forget, we met yesterday, and I did ask if you would be attending our D&D in two weeks time. I think you said you would consider. Now, I would ask you publicly.

You have always been advising on investments and business ideas. However, about coming to the D&D, and let your hairs down.

Our Caroline Gee and her team have organised one of the biggest events of the year for members. And, all witin a tight budget.

So, in your suit, will you come, drink and dance the night away? Mind you, it’s expensive, still 45 Sing dollars. I dont know if there are seats left. What’s your decision?

    Terence Seah

  86. Hi Steven @134

I thought the word ‘lao’ was out of favour as age is just a number? Anyway, better to be ‘lao cute’ than ‘lao lao’! (unless you’re a real lao2 lao3 – maternal grandma)).

    JassmineT

  87. Terence, I think KT is still trying to finish his Auto-dancing program (similar to his Auto-trading) before he shows it off at the D&D.

KT, since you have benefited me a bit in your investment advice, I would like to return the favor by teaching you some basic steps in social dance in time for the D&D if you sign up.

  88. Hear! Hear! Jonathan. You do that and see if Travolta will go….. or not.

I think if the Dinner and Dance had been named just Dinner, more guys would have plucked up their courage to attend. Jeez!

  89. KTWong, #150
Like real meh? Then the R n R and salsa would be more to your style right?
Aunty here will dance one dance with you if you are brave enough to appear at the D n D, ah tee, hee hee.

  90. Jass, the “Bamboo” is a symbol of power, almost sacred. It unites beggars all over, starting from Hong 7 Kung then Wang Rong before finally ended in the hands of Yue Wah as Shaw Bros’ Big Drunk Hero so we wont dare to use it and usurp the mark of authority of the heartlanders.

Try a “Baboon” if you want.

KT/MaryC, let me throw you both a challenge. Try counting my chest hair separately and whoever gets the correct answer and forget abt Scorebot’s millions when my prize is a billion.

(KT, you hv 1 hour to count. MaryC, you can count slowly, tie heart-shape knots with my hair if you want and rest on my chest if you’re tired)

DennisH, haha, so even MaryC knows your secret – that you shake. Yes, DennisH can deftly shake with 1 hand or when he’s really really excited, he shakes with both hands and makes a lot of noise………….
