  1. Hi Terence/others

….At times, you may feel down, bored or frustrated after a day’s of hard work and if you want to release your STRESS or feelings you can do so.

I strongly suggest Terence to put in your unrelated comments under another category CHIT CHAT or KOPI TIAM talk just like in STOMP and refrain from putting your comments in any post as you wish as I had explained in my earlier comment # 103.

Terence is it OK for you ?

    My 5cts. worth.

  2. Hi all,

Sometimes,we came across many comments that are NOT related to the posted thread.

It is IRRITATING and waste of time as each comment will trigger automatically an email in our mailbox and also for organising the events we need to sieve thru to see who r joining, paid or suddenly can’t join.

As long as it relates to the event be it suggestion etc. it is fine

Pl.s be MORE FOCUSED in yr comments relating to any thread.

If you have so much to say, I strongly suggest Terence to put in your unrelated comments under
    CHIT CHAT.

Here you can talk whatever you want but again the taboos holds.

Before you put put your thoughts, be sensitive to other feelings as well esp to:

    (i)Racist remarks
    (ii) Vulgarities
    (iii) Snide remarks

Pls. RESPECT one another whether you choose to AGREE or DISAGREE.

In SHC, we are working towards a PEACEFUL and HARMONIOUS society.

  4. Hi Joy and Jonathan :

There are substantive Ample Things Motivating (ATM) in that “Simple Truths of Service”.

Am glad you mentioned again that moved me to view it. It brings value.

@ wonderful spirit of service from a clean heart, though he has Down Syndrome.

@He shines and brings “Delight @ Transform to gladness and true beauty” to customers

@ Touch goodness and bring out the best of everyone. That is wise, helpful and useful simple common sense.

  5. Hi Andrew K,

I will still join for the goodwill and fellowship but I will be more than happy if I could at least speak Mandarin 1/2 past 6 standard and not to write as silverhair memory is getting “foggy”

    Lesson 1:-
    Charng Hua Yi.

Papa jiao, mama jiao, papa lai pau titi that was what I had learnt in Msia optional Mandarin class at std.4.

  6. Jonathan at #87

    Thanks for sharing the video.

I have a broader interpretation of “Always give your customers a little more than they expect” and “Go another mile” that includes all relationships.

Have we gone the extra mile with our spouse, our partner, our companion, our lover, our parents, our siblings, our children and our friends? I am asking myself (hey, not every category listed exists in my life ah)…

  7. Hi AndrewK at 94,

    …?? : ???,???

Hey Andrew, I am in a beginner’s Chinese class and you expect me to know what it means…

    Don’t be so quah cheong.

Btw, pls. translate for the Chinese illiterate like me. Thanks.

  8. Mary

Of course, the word “formidable” in my #86 is in its positive way. What I mean is you’re respectable and impressive. In Cantonese “??”. Hope I have not used the wrong word, ha ha.

  9. 1) The power of words is immense.

A well-chosen word has often sufficed to stop a flying army, to change defeat into victory, and to save an empire. – Emile De Girardin

    2) Remember that a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language. – Dale Carnegie

  10. AndrewY, #86. I’m not ‘formidable’, hahaha, at least not in the negative sense. I can be sometimes, positively ;-)
I hope you meant it in the positive way, hehe.

    #88.
No need to apologise. I understood what you meant.

  11. 1) Your relationships can only be as healthy as you are – Neil Clark Warren

    2) Memory is the treasury and guardian of all things – Cicero

    3) Treat a man as he appears to be and you make him worse. But treat a man as if he already were what he potentially could be, and you make him what he should be – Goethe

  12. Agree with you, Jonathan.

Whatever comes straight from the heart is the most sincere and pure.

    Hi Yeung

Am sure your vocabulary is already quite formidable.

    warmest regards

  13. Mary, Kuan(mind I call you this way)

    Thanks for your enlightenment.

Mary, you’re really formidable, know to speak the Filipino English, ha ha. Always sent the song to you. Hope you enjoy it.

Kuan, will take your advice, strive to enrich my vocab from existing less than 1,000 to 3,000, and hope my English will become better at that time.

  14. Dear Joy

Heart-warming story, pleasant words are good for the body, mind and spirit.

Here is an excellent quotation from PM Lee on 27.5.65

I don’t trade in people’s business is the people’s happiness.

Here is an apt inspiring Chinese idiom

????(po4 ti4 wei2 xiao4) – to change tears to smile ; from grief to joy.

Let there be JOY to the world.

  15. Similar to this “Always give your customers a little more than they expect”, is “Go another mile”, which is one of the five laws of happiness mentioned by Og Mandino in his book, “The Greatest Miracle in the World” (which Danz loaned to me, errr how many moons ago ah, and which I brought along on two occasions to return to him, but it laid in my bag each time and came home with me).

    OK, enough of sidetracking.

Og Mandino mentioned these as the five laws of happiness and success :-

    1) Count your blessings
    2) Proclaim your rarity
    3) Go another mile
    4) Use wisely your power of choice
    5) Do all things with love

And he said, “YOU are the greatest miracle in the world.”

Nice…heartwarming again. Wah, heart very warm tonight eh?

  16. “Always give your customers a little more than they expect.”

The egg seller wd 1 day hang a cock upside down outside the customer’s door before he leaves for workin the morning……..heee, the mother of surprises greets him.

  17. I have a story to share in this Motivation, Inspiration, Advice thread.

When Percy Ross, author of “Ask For The Moon – And Get It!”, was about six, he had to help his family earn money. His dad asked him to go house to house to sell eggs. His dad told him to give his customers an extra egg once in a while.

“Always give your customers a little more than they expect.”

He also learnt how to smile, to be pleasant and to talk to people. Nice…so heartwarming story.

  18. AndrewK, you’re no person to tell anyone to stop when you bring the flak and embarrassment upon yourself.

You preach a lot, quoting big phrases from big men like Soloman and LKY when you cd hardly do the least of them.

If you want to take me on, I’ll take you head-on.

    Ready?

  19. Phonetics of which English language?

Australian, British, American, Spanish, Beijing, Singlish, Mangalish,Scotish, White House, Greyhound or White Sands accent?

  20. Yes, someimes the phonics that out children learn stand no place im pronunciation.

Like “Leicester” isnt lei-ces-ter but les-ter.

Jose sounds more like hosei in hosei liao and Johan is yo-han.

Real Madrid? Well, let’s say “Re-awl” Madrid.

Can pronounce “Kuyt”? Not Kuut but Kult.

Go ask DennisW how to pronounce “knn” but pls make sure you ask the correct Dennis. Mr Har will tell you it’s ku nai nai………..

  21. Ha ha at #64 ” I am me, you are you”

A bolt and a screw, obviously, each is different.

They are made to complement one another for usefulness and meaning.

When one does not do its assigned role, it will become chaotic and messy; worse, confusion, contusion and concussion and possibly with PHD.

In an improper natural sequence and unnatural bombastic state, a storm in a tea cup will arise.

We shall let the storm remain in the tiny tea cup, when the leaves sink, read its fortune.

  22. The Philipinos will say ” Maha Kita”.

Hi Yueng: you won’t be confused by a bombastic word, right?

An average dictionary has more than 10,000 words and phrases.

Let start with the 3,000 common used words and communicate with good, simple and meaningful English words. And remain focus, steady and purposeful.

  23. Hahaha AndrewY, you poor thing. All confused by the barrage of definitions and word exchange.

Ok, “poignant” has several meanings and usage.

I was using the “deeply moving” meaning.

As to “potahto”, hee hee, it’s that common pronunciation dilemma.

Some people pronounce “tomato” as “to-may-to” and others as “to-mah-to”.

    It’s the same with “potato”.
Some say “po-tay-to” and others, like a Filipino maid I had years ago, who say it as
    “po-tah-to”.

My point in all this is that everyone is entitled to his or her own interpretation of a piece of work e.g. music, poem, song etc. and there is no need to ridicule or pass impolite remarks about the other person’s interpretation.

Oh yes, I would love to hear the song Andrew. Please send it to me. Thanks. :-)

  24. Mary, AndrewK

Learning new English words from both of you:

Mary – poignant; AndrewK – reflective; Mary – potato. Thanks

But Mary, can you enlighten me what is the meaning of “potahto”. Cannot locate it from all the dictionaries I have. Furthermore, do you like to hear the song “Anyway”? I can e-mail it to you.

  25. Heeee, MaryC, not my fault hor, you seem to enjoy alternating btwn the 2 Andrews, fluttering about like a butterfly or better still, flying butter……………..

  26. “I am me and you are you”.

If one day – just 1 day – MaryC behaves, talks, dressses, goes into the Gents and does everything like AndrewY, and AndrewY acts likewise in the person of MaryC, it has to be a day to look forward to, more than looking forward to the Budget Day.

Pls pls, oblige us……………..just 1 day will do.

  27. Hi Mary:

Good to use a simple word/phrase that conveys superlative tone/meaning rather than one with ambiguity, worse use a bombastic word/phrase.

Bombast is pompous, empty and meaningless.

What is potahto ? Is it a word used by an OCBC ?

There is potash. It is a salt of potassium (eg potassium carbonate) used to make fertilizers, soaps and other useful chemicals.

    Is potahto a coined Singlish?

I don’t know what is that and don’t use that, any clue?

I do use SALT to disinfect and for taste.

Maybe I shall share a parable on Salt and Light elsewhere, when appropriate.

    Cheers,

  28. Haha AndrewY, by poignant, I meant that it was “deeply moving” and perhaps a little sadness between the lines.

    AndrewK,
Everyone has his or her own interpretation of the song. You say “potahto”, I say “potato”. Why do I have to interpret it your way? I am me and you are you.

  29. Hi Yeung

The meaning (of poignant – used by Mary) is from Oxford Advanced Lerner’s Dictionary.

The song is reflective, I do not think is poignant.

  30. Mary, AndrewK
The song is sing by a lady, surely my voice is not high enought to sing it.

I like the song but I don’t think the lyric is sad (poignant). I interpret it as when you want to do something, even the thing seems not easy to achieve or even impossible to achieve, but if you really interest in it, do in anyway. Enjoying the process, not the result.

  31. 1) We are very accustomed to the rough talk; in fact the rougher they talk, the politer we become.

You know, people talk of losing their patience. We never lose our patience; he who loses his patience, loses his temper, loses the argument, and loses the case. – PM Lee, 13.6.65

    2) Whether it is a black or white cat, so long it catches rats, it is a good cat. – VP Teng, China

  32. “Tim, I don’t always see eye to eye with you but like you…….”

Heeee, MaryC, you make tim shy lah….this type of thing huh, cannot say openly one but since you let the cat out, I must also set the rat free…….yes, I know you dont look me in the eyes – that’s for the romantic young and you know eniough to know where it matters so you stare at it unblinkingly, heeee, tongue hanging out & dripping….and pls tell KT, it’s not 2 inches, not like his………….

The opportunity of life is to serve at geylang.

The sacred of life is to scare you into believing.

The slice of life is to behead yr friend.

The pity of life is to give & give till you end in grief.

  33. Ron @ # 48

SHC should be very grateful for the two of us. We are diametrically opposite. If someone is further away at the edge they will probably fall off the table.

You may not know this. But I may be your greatest fan. We learn things by being challenged and not by being in our comfort zone. I follow your trials and tribulations much more closely than you think. If you suceed I would have taken away some invaluable lesson and experience.

The same with Terence. I am rooting for his different perspective. I am supporting his efforts 100% in my own way through Scorebot and other efforts. I want his and your views to prevail, if possible.

If I am right, so what? I am already there. Where do I go. No fun.

  34. Hi Andrew Yeung

Have something vibrant with gladness besides poignant ( adjective – affecting one feelings deeply, making one sad, full of pity, sorrow, regret, memories) to give a good balance.

    Ya ?

  35. Andrew Yeung #40.
How poignant. Don’t think I know that song but would like to one day. Perhaps you have the cd or maybe you will sing it at the D n D? :-)

  36. KT

Like to take up Ronald Wie’s suggestions at #48 ?

Come and play tennis, or swim, cycling or exercise at the gym or be involved in Mandarin Fellowship, good you can, together with Mary and Tim.

Come and contribute something to the vibrant group.

We can have more laughters bi-lingually, good for exercising both sides of our brains instead only the left side with algo programming or only right side with English phonetics or somewhere with frozen means.

With Solomon’s wise sayings, our central brains, three in one : ??,????.

    Ai mai ? ????

  37. Terence #32 – I like your observation , are more of us doing this without knowing ? KT watch out you seem to fall in this pattern , repeating and preaching , “Always talking Money or Preaching ” . I thought the first sign is lost of hearing but heard Mary says something is else is lost before hearing..what is that ?? Terence , KT ,no worries luckily SHC has many other acitivities like ,walking, cycling , dancing , badminton , etc , which keeps the mind and body from aging too fast, so KT better join in such activities that you have not been seen in any yet. All is not lost, better start such activities if you have not, and freeze whatever is left. Mary is a good example of how one can maintain a healthy, youthful face ,body and a sharp mind too on frozen meat too, i hope that is all that she keeps frozen.

Mary #26 – the other joy is being able to share the joy with others, that is when more people can do what you already learn, buy dirnk , return favor in kind , without being asked to lah. Maybe now you are ready to share with others this joy, Hymm many more drinks should be coming to me lah soon before i lose my memory ???

  38. Hi thank you, Jonathan.

After watching the slides, I counted myself very fortunate to receive letters when I first taught Economics when I was 20.

I am moved to tears to note that lady responded to the only letter she received when she was already in her 80s.

  39. Aspects Of Life

The adventure of life is to learn.

The purpose of life is to grow.

The nature of life is to change.

The challenge of life is to overcome.

The essence of life is to care.

The opportunity of life is to serve.

The secret of life is to dare.

The spice of life is to befriend.

The beauty of life is to give.

  40. Just watched Lydia Sum Concert on DVD, Wu Chin was singing a meaningful song advising men in general:

    ????????

Very apt advisory for men who are on missions and travelling.

  41. Love the topic, but poor in writing, just share I song I like very much – “Anyway” by Martina McBride:

“You can spend your whole life building something from nothin’
One storm can come and blow it all away
    Build it anyway

You can chase a dream that seems so out of reach
And you know it might not ever come your way
    Dream it anyway

God is great, but sometimes life ain’t good
And when I pray it doesn’t always turn out like I think it should
But I do it anyway, I do it anyway

This world’s gone crazy, it’s hard to believe
That tomorrow will be better than today
    Believe it anyway

You can love someone with all your heart for all the right reasons
In a moment they can choose to walk away
    Love ’em anyway

God is great, but sometimes life ain’t good
And when I pray, it doesn’t always turn out like I think it should
But I do it anyway, yea – I do it anyway, yea

You can pour your soul out singing, a song you believe in
That tomorrow they’ll forget you ever sang
Sing it anyway; yea, sing it anyway, yeah, yeah!

    I sing, I dream, I love anyway”

Do thing for your interest not for the result.

  42. Laughter is an excellent medicine

Someone has written 3 verses (with triple H)somewhere:

    With my head, understand people;

    With my heart, love people;

    With my hands, help people.

To err is human, to forgive divine.

  43. Tim, I don’t always see eye to eye with you, but, like you, I dread preachers, of any kind. You can have my chopper and use it at will. I’m vamoosing.

  44. Re-quote:

May the teachings of those you admire become part of you, so that you may call upon them.

Remember, those whose lives you have touched and who have touched yours are always a part of you, even if the encounters were less than you
would have wished. It is the content of the encounter that is more important than its form.

May you not become too concerned with material matters, but instead place immeasurable value on the goodness in your heart.

Find time in each day to see beauty and love in the world around you.

Realize that each person has limitless abilities, but each of us is different in our own way.

What you may feel you lack in one regard may be more than compensated for in another.

What you feel you lack in the present may become one of your strengths in the future.

May you see your future as one filled with promise and possibility.

Learn to view everything as a worthwhile experience.

May you find enough inner strength to determine your own worth by yourself, and not be dependent on another’s judgment of your accomplishments.

    May you always feel loved.

  46. MaryC @#27, in 1 fell swoop, you got to keep what i prized but you covet in yr handbag (when you’re out shopping) and tie to yr bolster when you sleep……that’s why.

Terence, you fear lecturers, I dread preachers so let’s borrow MaryC’s chopper and finish them off………..also in 1 fell swoop.

  47. My dear Terence

You are at least five years younger.

You are quite a wise and happy man.

May you have the fruit of the Spirit in increasing measure daily: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

    Enjoy your journey of serendipity.

    Be blessed

    Cheers,

  48. AndrewK @28,

Some of my greatest fears, as I grow older, are losing my memory, repeating myself, relieving the good old days and giving lectures. The more I read your #28, the more worried I get.

You are not old. Your heart and body are young. You are fit; and you dress young. Unfortunately, I refuse to admit I am getting older. Join me. Tomorrow will always be a brighter day.

Thank you for your lifts. So,no need to buy you drinks in return anymore right? ;-)
Your kindness is giving you insurmountable joy mah. Hehe.

Me cant get censored one lah, circumcised may be…..and why are you holding the chopper instead of the surgical knife in yr hand?

Wisdom is better than strength. But the wisdom of a poor man is despised and his words are not heeded.

The words of the wise heard in quietness are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools.

  60. Gentleness and Kindness

A line from a song by legendary English band The Smiths goes “It takes
strength to be gentle and kind”.

Now, gentleness and kindness are qualities which are hardly socially
thought of as being characteristic of strength.

Yet, when you think about it? it certainly takes a lot to be gentle,
and even more to be kind. There is much selfishness, anger, and
resentment in the world, and one’s reaction to harshness is likely to
    be equally severe or damaging.

To respond to hostility with gentleness requires considerable faith in
humanity and courage of the spirit. As for kindness, well, most people
are too busy thinking of themselves to bother.

Antagonism and hostility encourage the creation of more negative
feelings, both in the perpetrator and the receiver. Gentleness and
kindness on the other hand, inspire joy, love, compassion and peace.

Moreover, giving without expectation gives us great happiness and
satisfaction. Nothing makes our day more than a genuine compliment, a
sincere pat on the back, an earnest hug, or a favour from a colleague.
Do you get those often? More importantly, do you give those regularly?

It’s a vain enterprise to expect a reward for a good deed. Take
pleasure in performing the good deed itself. And you will be a happier
    person.

When someone is kind or generous towards you, the joy can only be
temporary, because the effects never last very long. But when you are
kind or generous towards someone else, you’ll find that the joy only
increases and accumulates. Because your act will serve to add to the
world being a better place? no matter how small or insignificant you
    think it is.

Gentleness has been ingrained in many cultures as being a sign of the
powerless and impotent. And kindness is sometimes thought of as a hint
of weakness your opponent can take advantage of.

These are misconceptions, for anyone can take up the sword to strike
in hatred and fury, but only the truly mighty are able to lay it down
    in forgiveness and love.

So the next time you’re moved to malice or anger, try being gentle and
kind instead. Experience for yourself the spiritual strength and joy
    that comes from them.

  61. 1) If you leave it to others less honest or able or sincere you will get frustrated watching them make a mess …..(17.3.71)

  63. Hi Jass, I like these 2 quotations….Keep ’em coming ;-)

    1. To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.

    Heather Cortez

    2. The purpose of life is to live a life of purpose.

    Leider, Richard

  64. Hi Jon

    I’m inspired by these words:

    1. We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love.

    2. What we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But if that drop was not in the ocean, I think the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.

    Both quotations from Mother Teresa.
