Allowing mobile telephone number to be published on this forum

hp1      hp2

Dear members, in particular EOs,

We have not allowed the contact telephone numbers to be published in SHC, for security reasons.  This has its disadvantages.  Members are unable to contact the EO or the EC, in case of need for emergency contact.  Over the past years, some EOs have requested to allow their mobile tel to be published.  I see the advantage.  But, it is still a NO.

I am thinking of allowing mobile telephone numbers of EOs and ECs to be published.  If there is sufficient support for this suggestion, I am likely  allow mobile tel of EOs and ECs to be published.  Provided the EO and EC published enough information in the post.  And, that this does not allow the collection of members contacts for direct selling, MLM or any other purpose than the intended event.

Please to hear your views.

WEF 23 Aug 2014, EOs and ECs can insert their contact telephone numbers on this forum.  Non-EOs and Non-ECs should continue to use this forum for communication.

  1. Hi Terence

I wouldn’t want my hp number to be released on this forum page .. may end up with a deluge of unwelcome calls/sms since this blog is accessible to members of the public too. This will cost $$$ especially when you’re overseas.

    Warm regards….

  2. Should we leave it to the EO and EC to decide whether he/she wants his/her mobile numbers to be released. If he/she is not comfortable, then do not publish it. I can understand the the cons of publishing the mobile number as someone might call you at the wrong time.

How about allowing email address to be published subject to the comfort level of the member.

  3. Dear Terence,
I share Gabby’s views. It s a No No for me too! Anyway regular walkers do have my contact as well as some of our walk team’s contact. I speak only for our walks – recent months, I noted that more & more registered participants do take responsibility to try to keep relevant EOs informed either thro me and/or another member — 1) should they be late or 2) last minute something crop up n they can’t come or 3) when they need to leave halfway from the walk I applaud them. :D :D. :D Sincere appreciation! Thank you!

Besides, have enough junk emails! do not want junks from advertisers in mobiles, too! hehehe.

    Cheerio!

  4. Let’s listen to more feedback from members.

I can understand that some EOs or ECs do not like to publish their contact telephone numbers for security reasons. This has always been our reason not to allow telephone numbers. EOs and ECs are not required to pubish their contact telephone numbers.

Interesting, so far, no one has supported the idea of EOs or ECs publishing their mobile telephone number in the forum.

  5. “Not allowed to publish” and “Advise not to publish” are 2 different things.

To clarify matters, it should be
    1) NOBODY shall publish the contact number(s)/email address(es) of another person (EO or otherwise)
    2) NOBODY shall stop anybody from voluntarily publishing his/her OWN contact numbers.
However, if Admin deems that there is a “secutiry” risk to the Club when such informations are published, then the answer is unconditionally NO.
Providing an answer to Moon Wong’s question above will solve this dilemma

  6. Terence,
If I am EO/EC, I am definitely not going to have my mobile# to be published in here. This forum is opened to public viewing which by end day, receive many ‘boh liao’ calls. At most, I dont mind email address to be opened up.

    Cheers… Dolly

  7. So far, the feedback on allowing telephone contacts on this forum has been towards a No, especially by EOs and ECs. I have not seen feedback supporting a YES.

Does this mean that we should not allow telephone contacts to be published? Telephone contacts also means the ability for other members to contact one another via Whatsapp, Viber and other instant messging applications. It can be a call, a text message, a video message, etc.

    What do you think?

  8. When I wrote my profile soon after joining SHC, a member who welcome me wanted my tel no. So I gave it in my reply in this forum but I wondered why she never called me. About a year later when I met her I asked about the matter and she said she never received my number so I went back to check my post and sure enough it was not there and I didn’t even know about it! (May I know where is it written of such rule?)

  9. rule?)
Also once about 2 years ago I put my email address for game and mahjong activity. I received a private email from a guy who was interested to play so I replied and we corresponded via emails several times (and he gave me his hp no) until one day I felt suspicious and checked with admin whether that Mr X with that particular email address and hp no is the same Mr x that I thought I know. And the answer is???? (Yes got prize for those that guess it correctly. and the prize? My email and hp no!!)

  10. Re contact telephone numbers on this forum, it is likely the Club will leave the decision of whether to allow contact telephone numbers to EOS and ECS. The conditions will be set out, and will be announced before the end of this month.

Thank you to the EOS and ECS who have given their feedback.

  11. I have reviewed the use of telephone numbers on this forum and Club. There are reasons why telephone numbers should not be allowed; and this is mainly to protect the owners of the telephone numbers, from receiving unwanted calls.

On the other hand, SilverHairsClub members are considered mature, and know the implications of providing their telephone numbers on the forum which is open to anybody. Those who wish to insert their telephone numbers, say they know the implications, and being senior, should be able to decide themselves.

Therefore, with immediate effort, EOs and ECs can place their contact telephone numbers in the post or comments, on this forum. Hopefully, this will make contacting the EO or EC easier. The Club still discourage the use of contact telephone numbers on this forum.

The decision is left to the EO or the EC.

All other members are encouraged to use this forum to contact the EC, the EC or other members of the club.
