Thinking aloud the future of SilverHairsClub

One year ago, a member confronted me, and asked what would happened to SilverHairsClub should something happened to me.  I felt offended at first, but Yeah hah, sounds like a very serious question.  Since then, I have been thinking.  I like to share my thoughts aloud.

  1. For the time being, I have put the different passwords of this website on a piece of paper.  Should anything happen to me, this piece of paper will be handed to someone whom I have designated.  The person is a SHC member.  I am surprised that SilverHairsClub.com has turned out to be very well read, with 75% readership in Singapore.  So, we should plan for it to run forever.
  2. I am also thinking of creating a corporate entity "SHC Corporate" which will own SilverHairsClub.com.  Discussions of SHC Corporate are on another thread.  SilverHairsClub will run as it is currently run, with no membership fee, the same taboos, age requirement and style.  With the corporate entity, hopefully, we dont have to debate the issue of succession, plus other issues of activities organised by the club.  We are still discussing, so it would be nice to hear from you.

Enough for now.  I look forward to hear from you.

  1. Hi SHCians,

A week ago, I provided an interview to Straits Times on SilverHairsClub. The editorial was keen to know more about SHC and the people who make the activities vibrant and attractive to other SHC members.

Won’t tell you too much about it. I understand the interview is scheduled to run this Sunday in the Sunday People column.

The SilverHairsClub has a strong culture. As such, and from time to time, I may approach you to take interviews from various media. I like to thank all the crazy SHCians, who are event organisers and who have participated in the forum and events. Let’s continue to make SilverHairsClub a platform to meet new and more friends.

  2. Dear Terence

Look forward to see further positive development and growth in SHC.

A salute to you for starting this useful and meaningful link.

I have made several well meaning, cheerful and helpful friends in a short period of four months.

    Warmest regards

  3. Dear Terence

Good idea, will support you all the way. Having a corporate image in Silverhairsclub will stand us in a high esteem, as well as be recognised by other institutions.

  4. Hi Terence

Can have both : a) a online blog and b) a registered entity for specific business purposes.

Both can exist side by side.

    Cheers,

  5. Hi Terence

Cannot find any SHC articles in Sunday Times, like to advise?

However, I find an article interesting : Sars widow finds LOVE again in Home page 7.

Am happy for both of them, Dr Koh and her new groom, Mr George Tan. They were married by a friend, Rev(Dr) Francis Ngoi.

Her expression : Twice Blessed – I’m blessed, really speaks volume from a consented, grateful and cheerful heart.

    Cheers,

  6. Correction;

Twice blessed – I’m blessed, really speaks volume from a contented, grateful and cheerful heart.

    Contented, not consented.

  7. Hi Andrew,

In my business, I love guys like you who read the newspapers front to back. I guess there is no space, so they have decided to give it a miss.

Have a fun Sunday. See u at the durian adventure.

  8. See you on Saturday, 31 May 6:45pm at The Aljunied MRT station for the start of our 1st Durian and Serendipity Trail.

    Cheerio !

    Aiya.

It’s nothing to do with divine intervention. All you need is a smart press secretary. Someone who can talk and talk and talk.

What? You didn’t tell them about our celebrity line-up, both Frozen and Hot.

See-lah. Told you to mention about the collective noble aims and sacrifice of members for SHC ideals. How we plan to host Blue Helmet, Flea Market, Financial Independence and how we are going to save the country from the endemic global problem of ageing. Telling them about a kelong trip or going to Anna for lunch isn’t going to make much editorial mileage.

We must have some visible social directions and achievements; or a lot of smoke to make news.

Hmmmm…. ask A next time to second you on the press interview. By the time its over your coverage will be longer than the PM’s National Day, State of the Nation Address.

    Hee-hee

  12. Hi KT

Read and discover deeply into historical records of Chinese, Western and Middle Eastern eras, you would discover the consequences of those going against divine nature and principles.

Hope your flea market is a reality in 2008 ! Wish you success.

  13. Hi KT

    Three idioms are relevant :

    a) ???? (shui3 di1 shi2 chuan1) -dripping water wears through rock – constant effort brings success.

    b) ????( si1 qian2 xiang3 hou4)- to think of the past and the future – very considerate and thoughtful

    c) ???? – to live harmoniously in peace

  14. There can be no argument that we SHCians shd mould and shape the future of SHC but analyse it further, who are in the “we”?

It’s not far-fetched to suggest that “we’ comprise the vocal & active members with the persuasive winning the lot over. Or shd “we” consist of the founders and their cohorts since they bring SHC to us and must be given a free hand to chart its destiny? I dread the day when the latter finds a seconder but the fact we are reading this thread created by the founder and inviting discussion, has allayed my fear.

However, I am not exactly excited with the idea of corporatising SHC and I shall say my piece if I can find the thread which seems to have vanished with the recent system upgrade. Suffice to say it here that it’s scary to create a public company with 4,000 odd shareholders without a core business and without the desire to make profit. Not least, where do we find the revenue to operate the company?

  15. Hi Tim #15,

Thank you for saying your piece, and i am sure this wont be the last. I think it will be nice if one day, we can be a public company with 4,000 members. But I rather we take it half a step at a time.

I am pretty open in my thinking aloud about the future of SilverHairsClub, SilverHairsClub.com and SHC Corporate. The first two will maintain their current workings. SHC Corporate is currently being developed and will most likely be moulded into a business entity. Therefore I invite ideas and discussion. Without a core business and the desire to make profit, the idea will crash before even taking off. Nevertheless, I rather we take a step approach and discuss the ideas. We still have until end June 2008.

  16. Not a trace of the other thread on SHC Corporate, I shall take it further from where Terence has left off @ #16.

Should all SHCians be invited to be shareholders of SHC Co Ltd (“SHCL”)? If so it’ll certainly exceed the number of shareholders allowed for a private exempt limited which limits the membership to 20.

Or will SHC select its shareholders; if so, who selects? Who sets the criteria, mindful that no criteria will ever be seen as fair.

Then, you’ll need to appoint a Board of Directors to manage SHCC. Even if the entire Board serves with the utmost altruism and accepts no Directors’ fees, there’ll still be overheads such as secretarial, auditors’ fees, the maintenance of a registered office. So to make ends meet, SHCC need to find a core business.

And so we are headed into the rarefied world of business where, instead of the fun and easiness we run our SHC, we will be looking at bottom lines, stress ourselves with cost cutting measures. The corporate world is never short of arguments and betrayals.

Some may say that we’ll run SHCC like a copperative, generate income to help each other. Rhetorics pushing ideals to lofty heights but look at our star-performing cooperatives and see how many of its members really hv benefitted in the current recession?

If someone tells me it’s “the devil or the deep blue sea”, I wd prefer to drown the devil in the sea till he turns blue……………
