Free and Easy trip to M’sia-Jun 30th to Jul 6th, 2008

Hello again,

Lim Tian Soo and myself are thinking of driving to Malaysia, starting Jun 30th (a Monday). We intend to be back by Jul 6th (Sunday).

We will be covering Malacca, some small towns near Ipoh, (eg Tanjong Malim or up to Bidor) or even Ipoh if the traffic is good. We also intend to visit Pangkor Island, Maxwell Hill (Bkt Larut) in Taiping and drive up to Penang. On the way back we may visit Cameron Highlands, taking the new road up and the old road back. Essentially it will be a free and easy trip and the timing will be dictated by what the journey brings. No hotel bookings have been made. We believe there are enough hotels in Malaysia for us. The above is a rough outline of our visits.

We are looking for another 2 to 4 members as 2 have backed out. All costs will be equally shared except for fuel and toll charges which will be shared by all except the driver. I believe that is the SHC norm. Please educate me if I need to be corrected.

Those interested please respond to this post. Much obliged and Cheers to all.

  1. “All costs will be equally shared except for fuel and toll charges which will be shared by all except the driver. I believe that is the SHC norm. Please educate me if I need to be corrected”. Sure, you will have an education here the cost of which is borne solely by the educator me. No cost sharing is required.

It should be expanded to read as “All costs will be equally shared except for fuel and toll charges which will be shared by all except the driver for a reason no more complicated than he provides the car, pays for its insurance, fines for speeding (excluding for spitting), airconditioning, the car’s maintenance & general upkeep not forgetting that he also absorbs the car’s depreciation……………..”

  2. Hi Charles and Tim,

What you all have just said about the owner/driver of the car not paying for the fuel and toll is not the SHC norm yet but is the norm in general everywhere. In most cases at the end of the trip to thank the owner car, the passenger generally would top the fuel in his car and buy him dinner.
This is the norm or a practice but if passengers do not act out of willingess and keep asking if this is such and such and why, it would embarrass many owners of cars and they would decline such arrangement made is such a manner.
I am saying this as I have heard of people asking why I charge a flat rate of $10 for a day trip to JB. I have also people who thank me with a good dinner even after the charge of $10 and are happy doing so and keep coming back for more trips. Many people who take a free lift fail to understand how much they already save when they dont have to rent a car that can cost as much as $130 a day and the additional cost of insurance cover if anything happens.

If we want to encourage more owners of cars to participate in more SHC activities this norm need to be emphasied that it is not only the norm but the basic courtesy and many thanks and appreciation should be given on top of that.

It is alright if you are one of the very good friends of the driver but then you might have overstayed your visit too, if you have never practiced this norm and take it for granted even for a short trip here and there.

Just my feedback no point holding back if we want to get more trips/activities being promoted and organised freely for all. For those who are close friends of drivers you should know you are the privilege few, so should know what to do if you are invited to their cars often as there are those who do not get invited at all for such trips.

  3. Hi RonaldW, TimL, CharlesC,

I think that this is a good time to establish a SHC guideline, when drivers offer to use their vehicles to drive other pessengers on travel holidays. This guideline shall be added to our SHC FAQ.

To encourage drivers to use their vehicles, all costs, incurred during the trip, are to be equally shared by all participants, except for fuel and toll charges. Drivers are encouraged to start with a full tank.

Drivers provide car, insurance, fines, maintenance and driver’ license.

Hope this helps set the pace for more driving holidays.

    Terence Seah

  4. Haha, so Ronald-W, you hv found a lot more brickbats than “I love you” notes in your closet while looking for that T-back to prepare for our Orgy Nite?

Frankly, no holiday with friends is made in heavens. It is how much the folks want to make it enjoyable and memorable. Unhappiness over cost sharing splits and can plunge what wd hv been a great holiday into an abysmal one with people not talking (or talking behind backs).

If one wants to be calculative then let it be slanted in favour of your fella travellers. If everyone takes that attitude, the trip will be very pleasant and something to look forward to again and again. Enrich yr heart to give than to take. I aint preaching; I do it and I say so unabashedly. Trust me, I am not alone in SHC and, happily, the number is growing.

Heee, once I hv identified “the Special One” who expects others to pay for him more times than once, then I’ll leave him out in my next treat to butties. No hint is louder than that I think.

  5. Hi Tim and all

Not concern at all about words spoken behind my back as long we know what we are trying to do is in the best interest for everyone.
As I have stopped doing the JB trip and still getting some request from time to time even from the public wonder if anyone is willing to continue the weekly or bi-weekly JB trip.

Now that Terence has endorsed the norm, I hope someone can continue doing the JB trip at S$10 per person.

BRing who ever wants to go, as long they are SHC members, meet at a central area, and after the trip send down right home to their doorstep.

Whoever is doing it will not get rich but in a way create a special activity that is a sort of short Malaysia getaway to enjoy something different. Charles, Patrick and Tian Soo , those who likes hopping over to JB can think about this, think of the good it is for SHC as a whole, the bigger picture to members and you do make good friends like i did.

  6. Dear Charles

I hv waited long for the finalisation of this Malaysia trip. However, I am disappointed to see the date, 30th which I can’t take leave. Have to give this trip a miss. I am sure u will enjoy the trip in the co of SHCians.

    Annie
Thanks for your sms alert. U know I don’t read SHC website everyday. Enjoy yourselves too in the good company.

    Cheers
    Linda

  7. Hi Charles,

Glad you have finally come up with a date. Annie Loh and I hope to join you and Tian Soo in this trip. Can I have your email address, please. Thanks.

    Ivy Low

  8. Hi Ron W and Terence,

Thanks for your comments on the guidelines and Tim L for his advice on travelling.

    To Linda C,

Not to worry, I am very sure there will be other trips/opportunities. Stay positive.

To Ivy Low and Annie Loh,

I have sent you an e-mail. Please take note. I will be away for the next 3 days so I may not respond then but will do so next week. Please remember this is a free and easy trip and we will be living and eating what the journey brings but we don’t intend to travel as refugees as we will always have a car and plenty of mobility.

    Cheers.

  9. Hi Ivy Low and Annie Loh,

The trip is now confirmed for 4 of us. We will start Jun 30th, a Monday morning. The meeting place will be fixed later. Ivy, you can now book your airticket. Annie, I still do not know how to contact you. Please leave your e-mail and/or hp # in my e-mail.

Make sure you have your passports ready with more than 6 mos to expiry. If you are a PRC national, you may need a visa for M’sia. All Asean citizens have a 2 week automatic visa.

This trip is now closed to other participants as wthe car is now full.

    Cheers to all.

  10. Hi Charles,

Noted. I DO NOT like to travel like a refugee either and love to enjoy good food…I know you have lots of lobangs for eating. OK, I’ll get my air-ticket soon. I should be in sg one or two days before our departure. We could perhaps meet up first to wrap up the finer details, if necessary.

Fyi, I’m a true blue Singaporean; otherwise, Terence would have kicked me out of SHC…so, not to worry about passport and visa issues. I hv travelled on such trips before but up to KL only and that was many years back.

You can find Annie’s email address on my reply to you. Looking forward to this exciting trip with you all.

  11. Hi Charles & Tian Soo

This is Annie Loh, Singapore Citizen. I have been to Cameral Highland and West Malaysia last year. The tour is organised by retired tour guide staying in Bedok area. I would like to travel with free & easy which we can stop any place we like to visit or enjoy the good food.

During the last gathering, I did approach both of you and asking about any news on Malaysia Tour, you told me it is not finalised yet. Thank you for accepting both of us to join, Ivy & me are easy to get along person and will not give any trouble to both of you.

I will send my contact number to you via e-mail.

  12. Hello, Ivy and Annie,

Thanks for your compliments but I hope not to have over-delivered on my ‘lobangs’. With simple tastes, food with good company will taste memorable. Ivy, can you call me on my hp when you are in Sgp?

Also would the Boon Lay MRT be a good meeting place for Monday?
Tian Soo stays in Choa Chu Kang and I stay near Geylang. So knowing where both of you reside will help . Otherwise we can fix it at Boon Lay MRT.

Annie, my apologies but was your photo taken in the June Han’s meet? Can you tell me which photo no.? I only remember meting Tian Soo, Edwin, Ron K and some other ladies, some of whom I do not know their names yet. Otherwise I won’t know who to meet on Monday. If not can we meet for tea when Ivy is in Sgp? You decide.

I am looking to this trip.

  13. Charles,

Of course, I can call you but hor without your phone no. how to call leh? But, please don’t publicise your no. here…it is an offence (lol).

Good that you mentioned about our meeting place…I was thinking whether to put up at Boon Lay or Balestier…and Annie lives in the east. I’m easy. Btw, whose car are we taking?

Don’t worry about who you’ll be meeting…we know who we are meeting…smart girls, ya.

  14. Hi again Ivy,

Sory but I thot I had given you my hp no previously. Please check you e-mail. I will send it over to you and Annie.
    Thanks

  15. Hi Annie and Ivy

Glad that you girls are joining us. I’ll bring my car. Charles will help me drive. One of you girls can manage our ‘pool money’ and the other can make coffee???

Kranji Station is the best place for me to pick everyone up and go straight to the causeway.

We can also meet when Ivy comes to town. I’ll be back from Vietnam on the 18th and we can contact each other directly via email.

Meanwhile, stay cool. It was really hot in the golf course today.

    Cheers

  16. Hi Tian Soo & Charles

I stay in Bedok, Ivy from Balestier and Charles from Geylang, why not we meet together in one of the MRT station, there after we go together to meet Tian Soo in Kranji Station.

Ivy has e-mail you where to look for my photo from SHC 1st D & D, I think that photo looks better. You may also try to see from recent June gathering, 2nd set photo, count from left to rignt, No. 15, I was sitting side way with white brouse and green pants(one black hand bag put next to me). Hope you can find me.

Anyway, when both of you are free, we can meet up for coffee and further discussion. Future contact can be by e-mail or telephone.

    Cheers
