MKZ (Malacca) Trip 04 July 08-06 July 08 for discerning lovers of good food

Malacca Trip 04Jul  – 06 Jul 2008
Staying in 3 bedroom apartments with 2 pax in master bedroom  A with bathroom attached , 2 pax in bedroom B , 2 pax in bedroom C ,1 pax sleeping in 1 bed in living room , 1 pax sleeping on sofa in living room(total 8 pax to one apartment-an alternate is 7 to an apartment at M$82 with nobody sleeping on sofas)…stay is at Century Mahkota Apartments within walking distance to 2 major shopping malls. There are better and cheaper modes of stay like hotels but I chose this style of stay due to the fact we can relax and congregate together in one apartment to socialise and fraternize.  Allotment of sleeping arrangements will be on a drawing of lots basis for PLAN A  where all parties will pay an equal amount of M$76 per person per night(including breakfast).  Alternatively if all parties are agreeable …for PLAN B….Bedrooms B and C will be based on M$76 per person per night( X 2 ) and those in bedroom A can pay M$92 and those sleeping in the living room can pay M$60 if all parties are agreeable. The gross rate for 8 to an apartment is M$605 and for 7 to an apartment is M$573 per apartments .
I  will be act as EO ( gentle Dictator ) in the absence of Ronald Wie who has to fulfill National Day Parade Rehearsal Duties. The proposed tentative budget is S$200 per person  for the whole trip  including  accomodation in Malacca for 2 nights and all meal and drinks during meal times and entrance fee requirements while in Malacca only. All expenses before  you reach Malacca and after you leave Malacca will be at your own expense eg meals and drinks before you reach MKZ and after you leave MKZ.
The agreed methodology of individual car arrangements where drivers get a free ride and all the remainder of pax will contribute to petrol, toll fees and parking. Any other hidden costs like accidents(touch wood everything goes well), damage etc will be borne equally by all participants (you may consider seriously to take up insurance before the trip and can contact me regarding the insurance plans). The pax in the cars must also top up the petrol to full tank basis before exiting Malaysia. This expected expenditure between S$150 to S$200 will be handled and audited by 2-4 senior SHC regarding monitoring of expenses for the whole group. If there is a surplus this balance can augment our dinner in Johore Bahru on the way back( if not enough participants can top up the balance.I would like to declare the my company will benefit on the 10% comm on the hotel portion only. All participants will be provided with a photostat of a state map and another  city map showing the detailed locations of all the places of interest in relation to Malacca roads. This map is exclusive to seasoned travel agencies and not available to the general public.

  1. Hi PatrickK,

Great program, bringing travellers together to Malacca. Have fun. Hope this can set the pace for future car travellers into Malaysia.

I have also taken out some sentences, with reference to your company advertising. I guess you prefer not to listen. Please be conscious of this request.

Also, do try to add paragraphs. It helps guys like me read better. Again, have fun.

    Terence Seah

  2. Hi Patrick,

Thank you for organising such an interesting trip.

We are interested to go but cannot comfirm yet.
We just have a new born granddaughter. We can only go if there is someone to help look after the baby.

    We are non drivers.
We would like a bedroom to ourselves, if we are able to go.

When is the last date to confirm?

    Thank you

    Philip & Priscilla Wee.

  3. Hi Philip and Priscilla Wee.Suggest you put a tentative booking in the forum with no commitment and no xx charge..As the acting EO in the absence of Ron Wie I hereby suggest you take the 2 pax in a bedroom A (toilet attached)plan and pay M$16 more per head to ensure you get a bedroom. If not I will use my new found Dale Carnegie techniques and my charm(if I have any) to gently persuade the singles(male and female) to give way to couples and if in way worst case scenario ask the guys to volunteer for living room allotment.I will try my best to ensure no couples are separated even for one night and no poor damsels are left in living room situation unless it is an all ladies apartment. The only exception is when I like the lady’s company and if she does not mind my company and consents to being placed in a vulnerable situation in the living room with me…scandalous!!! HA HA HA!
Please state your preference for 8 pax configuration or 7 pax configuration.Your allocation will be done after the 1st 12 are settled.I will ensure that you will get an indvidual bedroom to yourselves and if I am unable (not likely)to ensure 100% than you have the right to xx.Tentative booking now and finalize by 20June and payment by 23June.What do the singles think of my proposal for the couples in general…any consensus?

  4. HA HA..Patrick Khoo strikes again. It has been a long wait.
I will go, my foot willing (no pun intended). One concern though – why do we have to drive separately when ALL can be driven together? We are not going on some expedition trip where we stop at various places. 4 or 5 persons crammed in a car for many hours is a torture. Besides, petrol price is $$$sky high, even in Malaysia. In any tour, the journey itself should be as interesting as the intended destination. Agreed??

If we take a coach, we can have a few hours of fun together – something we always yearn for. Chatting, crooning or just snoozing in the coach is real fun. Listening to Patrick t.c. is another enjoyment, if u know what I mean. While in Malacca, we can alway go around in taxi or jalan jalan. Or try their buses. That is fun too.

    Give a thought.

  5. Hi Patrick,

Much as we’d like to go, we are unable to do so at this time.

We appreciate all your hard work in organising it.

    Best Wishes,
    Philip & Priscilla Wee

  6. Patrick Khoo

Just curious , Why Pauline Khoo , Helen Kuek , Sally & myself are all in this post of your ???

When did we adv u that we are going???

    Karen Thio

  7. Ref #6 Karen Thio. You did mention your interest in the “Survey on volunteer drivers for Malacca trip”.
Good point ! At that time no mention of dates ,itinerary and prices so it will not be fair to hold you to that commitment. Will all members who had indicated their interest in the previous post please reconfirm your participation(at this stage no commitment and no cancellation charge ) but if you are sure you wont be going please cancel early.Had some feedback regarding the newspaper “Today” ref Restoran Aunty Lee along Jalan Ujong Pasir and the new mall called Melaka Megamall at Jalan Lebur Ayer Keroh to be included along with the previously mentioned Mahkota Parade and Dataran Pahlawan(both within walking distance from our apartments). Will check with my various advisers but will likely adjust to include unless feedback is to the contrary
Attn Karen at the moment you are in the 1st 12 priority list and Daniel Chan is the 13th person on the priority
list. The datelines are listed in #3.Please advise your position tentatively to remain in the list or are you opting
out..if you need a detailed itinerary please email to me and I will provide the complete details.
Attn Bira please advise if your car is available to be driven by Daniel Chan or Loh Yew Kwong.

  8. Hi Patrick!
I totally agree wif Terence that it ‘s rather hard to read yr comments. I’m interested in travelling & I found it difficult to absorb what are the main pts.

It’s better U put them in pt forms & paragraphings. In this way, it will attract more people who ‘re interested. Again no hard feelings for sincere & constructive comments?
    Thank You!
    Cat Ho

  9. Patrick Khpp

Sorry for the confusion. Now I remember about that post. My idea is just for a overnight trip.

My kaki Pauline/Sally/Helen were also planning for just a overnight trip.

Please delete our names , so that the other interested party can register.

    Thanks

  10. I will delete your names from the list.In case you still want to join us on saturday I have 1-3 people who are interested in only one day stay and form a 7 pax configuration with your party. If there are places or events that you are interested in let me know and I can shift them to Saturday to co-incide with your requirements. If you are interested in one day only let me know and I will put you back on list for saturday only and I will check with the parties in question. If 1 goes its a lady but if 3 goes it includes a guy and 2 ladies

Points taken and warmly accepted..you have to call a spade a spade. You should have seen my 1st draft! .I am going in the right direction but rather too slowly Terence,Danz,Ronald,Daniel Chan said the same thing …they can’t all be wrong either! The trouble is I write as if I am talking and oh so long winded. Will see if I can do better
    next time.
I liken it to telling a friend that he has bad breath or body odour. It is not something that is pleasant to talk about but if it is for his own good he should be told.Sometimes no choice it must be done in public…fully understandable. However if it is something personal it should be done in private in a tactful gentle manner.Do not indulge in name calling than I am perfectly comfortable as in your case. With no comments ,feedback , criticisms ,compliments(where appropriate) how can one improve progressively?.It’s through making mistakes that one learns from experience or the experience of others and than go on to improve by not making the same mistakes again.
    Your IMPERFECT PERFECTIONIST.

  11. Good News for Malacca trippers…just secured a better deal.
The 3 bedroom apartment can now have 2 extra beds…1 bed to be put in 2 out of 3 rooms.Nobody needs to sleep in the living room or sofa.M$600 divided by 8 at MS75 per head per night and 2 bedoom apartments will now consist of 2 in one bedroom and 3 in one bedroom at MS401 divided by 5 atM$81.The apartments are not in tip top condition ,hence the discount and waiver on extra bed rules..
Lastest count now 3 drivers and 6 pax.
Those on original list please reconfirm your intentions.

  12. Hi Patrick,

I am afraid I will not be able to go on this trip. Please take my name out. I just returned from a trip to Ipoh, Cameron Highlands and Malacca from May 16 to 2008.

Your presentation on the post is confusing. Try to stick to relevant heading and pointers as express by Cat Ho. Too much information without paragraph caused indigestion!

We know that you want to give us the full itinerary, but it better to make it as brief as possible.

    Danz

  13. Hi! Patrick,
Think U have made a mistake. I said that I’m interested in travelling but I didn’t said that I want to join U this time. Please don’t include me.
I read yr post & if a person is interested it’s rather difficult to read yr iternaries.
I’m still working it’s impossible to join U on those dates.
    Pls read carefully. Tks.
    Cat Ho

  14. Thanks for organising. Are we driving or taking a coach? How much to pay? I just need these info, before I can commit. Sorry, i’m little confused here.

  15. Estimated all in price inclusive of service apartment stay, food and drinks and various entrance fees and karaoke and group expenses is S$150-S$200. We will proceed to collect S$200 and let a senior SHC member and not acting EO (that is myself ) to keep for safe keeping and account for and only handover to me the service apartment stay payment after changing the entire amount to Malaysian dollars eg the trasurer will pay me M$600 x 2 nights for one service apartment for a party of 8 people. If there is balance we will use it to pay for a meal in Johore on the way back.if there is a further balance that it will be refunded equally to all participants.

I may ask Terence to recommend the treasurer and audit committee members at least 2 members ( 1 guy and 1 lady )

All car related expenses like petrol, parking and toll charges will be separate and borne by the pax in each car and owner of car will get a “free” ride as explained in the main post.

I have managed to secure a slightly better deal than the standard retail prices by approx 5-10% but in essence a 10% discount on the apartment booking and zero discount on the extra beds.Exact apartment prices mentioned in ref #13.Normally they will allow 7 pax in one apartment
but I have managed to negotiate a waiver of the requirement
and managed to get them to agree to 8 pax in one apartment.

It looks like we are going in 2 cars but it depends if more
participants are signing up and car availability.

Ref #15 Catherine Ho…you did indicate your interest in #8
but I did read it carefully and have not included you in the list at any time unless you inform me otherwise(you are welcome to change your mind and join us though).Sorry to have confused you with my unwieldy conversational style..will strive to improve and make sentences shorter. .Original list on Survey thread was 3 drivers and 9 pax and Daniel Chan was a new addition to make it 13.Since then Danz Hwang,Bira Lupolo and Karen Thio’s group x 4 have opted out.
The remaining drivers with cars are Boon Liang and Kathryn
Lee(needs good navigator and perhaps relief driver). The pax are Patrick Khoo,Grace Wong,Stef lim,Yew Kong and Daniel Chan. So far only Patrick Khoo,Yew Kong and Daniel Chan has reconfirmed their interest(at this stage no commitment and no cancellation charge). Will Boon Liang,Kathryn,Grace and Stef please reconfirm their interest or otherwise? If you (Lydia Chin) join us there will be 4 ladies in the group and I will propose that the ladies can have 2 bedrooms and the 3 guys(if there are no objections) will take the master bedroom with an extra bed while I may take the extra bed and put it in the hall or just sleep on the sofa and bring the costs down slightly.I don’t want to play the hero but I do snore very badly(there goes my chances with the ladies…disqualified anyway) and it would not be fair to torture my male room-mate/s!
Making 8 participants is not a problem but I will let the group decide at what the final decision is on going ahead with the trip.Hopefully Lydia you will join us to make it more lively( not that Grace of Kathryn are boring!)

There are possibly 2 ladies and 1 guy who are tentatively interested in joining us only for one night on Saturday 05 July so we need 2 ( 2 bedroom apartment) more participants or preferably a total 4-5 more to complete the 3 bedroom apartment.Any takers?

Anybody SHC members need any further clarification do no hesitate to ask and I will try my best to explain and
    decode!

Your IMPERFECT PERFECTIONIST and HOST/TRAVEL GUIDE

  16. ref #18 still plan to go by car unless group as whole prefer to go by bus but travel around MKZ would be inconvenient.Suggest we stick to current plan for the time being. Please advise your participation if still going by car?
ref #19 I have already acknowledged that my sentences are long and unwieldy that make it difficult to read. However my English can’t be that bad and confusing that you suffered a headache.(kepala sakit- Malay term). Please do not generalise but be specific…is there any word or phrase or sentence that you cannot understand please highlight to me and I will be more than happy to illuminate the salient points to make you see the light and unravel your confusion and clarify relevant points.By the way are you happy with the itinerary and pricing? Any practical commnents or suggestions for improvement? To use a Malay term “mahu tarok atau tekan pun tekan baik baik dan cantik sadikit”(want to hit or put pressure or shoot also do it properly and nicely). To explain this phrase I would suggest that it be done with facts and evidence.Earlier comments from all before #19 have all been warmly accepted and acknowledged and apologised to SHC members (work in progress – still trying to improve ).If yours is a repeat broadcast than saying it in Malay is nothing new unless your agenda is to promote the Malay Language.
To put someone under sniper fire is fun but do be prepared
for return fire if not supported by new facts and evidence.

    Your IMPERFECT PERFECTIONIST

  17. Patrick,
Sorry not able to go as I have just returned from Bkk & I have other committments on the days that u have specified for the trip. Thanks for organising the trip though.Hope you & the other SHC members have an enjoyable, hasslefree & a safe trip.
    gracew

  18. Hi Patrick,

please count me out as I’m unable to join you guys. Though I said I can drive but I do not have a car. Next time perhaps. Have a safe and enjoyable trip. rgds fr BL

  19. Due to poor response…I will cancel the Malacca if the numbers remain poor by 1700 hours 15June 2008.As it stands only one car with driver (not reconfirm yet )and 3pax (1 not reconfirm yet ).If SHC members are still interested pls respond by this date.

  20. Hi Patrick

I have earlier posted a comment that I would be interested and have a small car. Unfortunately I cant make it on the dates I just saw in your posting.

    Regards
    Kathryn

  21. Due to poor response I am canceling the Malacca trip at this juncture. My apologies to the handful who have indicated positively.
Any practical and positive suggestions to improve would be welcomed …other than those already mentioned.
    No repeat broadcasts please!
Perhaps another time , another destination?

    Regards,

    Patrick Khoo

  22. Hi Patrick Khoo,

Although, I am not involved in this Malacca trip, I am kind of sad and disapponted that you just CANCEL the trip when they were a few who are still willing to go along with you.

All the enthusiasm and time spent in preparing this trip has just FIZZLED in the air.

Despite the v.poor response,it is still OK to GO AHEAD with the 4 remaining interested members. Initially, you will NOT expect many , go slow and work up your way. This has been told by Terence to me when I first organise the BBQ and Steamboat Buffet Dinner at Sunset Way as one of our Westerlies events.

It is NOT necessary that every time any member will to post an event ,he/she expects a good turnout of 20 or even more members to join him/her.

    Hope you heed my advice.
Otherwise, if you will to continue to repeat the same decision in your future posts, you will come to a time
when members will definitely lose confidence in you.

After my ENJOYABLE tour to HCMC, any news abt my intended Manila tour and Boraclay Islands in the Philipppines tentatively in Dec 08?

Is Dec a RAINING season month?
    Pls. reply.

    Till then,
” Your unsolicited auditor cum mentor. ”

    Steven Chan

  23. Hu Patrick

Its regrettable tat tis trip is cancelled due 2 poor responses but nevertheless, I appreciate n applause ur enthusiaism n efforts.

    Theres always another time. TQ.

  24. Hi Patrick

It is disappointing that you had to cancel the malacca trip. I agree with Steven #30 that you should proceed even if you have just four participants.

I feel that there can be smaller groups for such events and there is no need to have a certain number, which, in you case, is around six to eight because of the two-room apartment that you planned to use.

A Malacca trip is an easy do-it-yourself even if you go by bus. You can check in at many small hotels along Jln Tun Tan Cheng Lock like the Puri and Baba House. This is right in the middle of the shopping and eating experience in Malacca and you can practically walk to everywhere. Take a taxi to other destinations like Makhota Parade or the Portuguese Village; you won’t even need a car!

But there again, what can tour or travel agencies do if everyone goes the DIY route?

  25. Patrick-K, it’s a shame that you had to call it off despite enthusing us all with a well planned write-up. I do agree with Kenneth-T that 4 cd hv easily made the trip.

Incidentally, I hv just returned from 2D1N Malacca (Thu-Fri) and driving leisurely at 120 kmph and stopping only once at Macap for a coffee-break, the drive took just over 2 hours from Spore-Malacca Hotel (Renaissance). And I was told to go on this busman’s holiday only on Wed nite at 9.10 p.m.

I am happy that my kid has enjoyed herself, knowing that she wont hv as much of her dad as she did…………

  26. Hi Guys ref #30 #32 #33.

I guess you guys lost track of my dwindling trip members as the trip numbers were falling down like 9 pins or is it 10 pins (any English Prof. out there can clarify?).

Thank you Yew Kong # 31 for understanding my predicament
and accepting the cancellation with understanding.

At last count I had no car and 3 pax ( Loh Yew Long and Stef Lim )including myself Even than Stef had not reconfirmed up to now .My original plan was for 8 pax in a 3 bedroom apartment.I cant even fill up a 2 bedroom apartment with 5 pax.If I revise the plan and go by bus Mr Daniel Chan might consider joining us( even that I am not sure).Even if the 3 guys ( assuming Daniel Chan still wanted to go ) said ok I am sure Stef Lim would have cast a veto vote being the only remaining Lady no matter how charming and gentlemanly(Loh Yew Kong definitely qualified) we are … I would definitely not qualify. If Daniel Chan goes the figure will get reach 4
pax.Would Stef have said YES..I dont think so!Would Stef respond and weigh in with an opinion..I certainly do not relish going by bus and travel between the various locations by taxi(have to go as far as Alor Gajah for the Hot Spring and Fruit Orchard or troubling my cousin to hire his S.U.V.even though the apartment is within walking distance .to the both shopping complexes.

Ref #30 regarding the unsolicited auditor … I can accept and endorse but i think you are stretching the cum mentor joke a little too thin.I accepted the joke mentor joke but certainly not accept you as a mentor. Is’nt a mentor supposed to know more than his pupil? Regarding the subject matter on
Malacca and travel I believe I have more experience and specialist expertise in the travel industry as a practicing
professional (hope my advice and tips on Vietnam have come in handy during your trip) and my father was a Malaysian and born in Malacca. As a result I visited my Grandfather and other relatives on a regular basis during the school holidays when I was a kid and bringing my mum to visit relatives on various occasions . I can even accept you as a mentor in other areas ( I am not sure what ) but I am not even sure that applies to teaching as I have taught English in an M.O.E certified Institution for adult learners and kids despite not having a degree. I think I can hold my own and take sniper fire and dish out my own shots as well as far as debates and the English Language are concerned .I value and appreciate the prevailing peace and ceasefire so I hope I have not reignited W.W.III! My apologies if my words are too
direct and cause you any indigestion or discomfort.

As a point of interest on Malacca I would suggest a visit on 23June for the Fiesta San Juan at the Portuguese Settlement.
The Fiesta San Pedro is held between 23-29 June at the same location.

For Genting fans I would suggest a visit during 18-20July 2008 as the Genting World Lion Dance Championship will be held on that weekend at the Arena of Stars but do book your rooms and show tickets early. You can call me or e-mail.

Nearer to home in nearby Johore Bahru at the Plaza Angsana
in the whole month of June is the Johore Fruits and Traditional Food Festival. Please get more details from Johore tel 607- 2249960 or e-mail info@johoretourism.com.my

I would strongly suggest going to Malaysia and holiday trips in general during events that are happening in the various locations as more interesting and fun.

    Your IMPERFECT PERFECTIONIST

  27. Dear Patrick,

As an observer to this Malacca trip that you tried to organise, I commend the enthuisam and efforts that you had put in thus far. However, you were too agressive and lacked PR, resulting in people lost confidence in you. We are all Imperfect Perfectionists, let’s change for the better. Cheers!

  28. Patrick @ #34

    Thk-u, Thk-u

Before you appeared I held the long winded record. I took the crown from Tim and Ron and now its yours to keep.

Shhhh…. here’s the 2-point secret of instant success in SHC forum.

1 Attention span here does not exceed 30 words in each comment.

2 Don’t use words more than 9 characters long.

So if you don’t get your message out within that frame, 99.9999% would have lost your drift. Getit?

    Hee-hee

  29. Ref #35 Was I too aggressive in my marketing or my rebuttals
of comments like “kepala sakit”(get headache) in the light of my earlier apology and admission of long-windedness.Isn’t the person rubbing it in by making a repeat of this point about confusion when I have already admitted doing so?

If a person who knows less than you on a subject calls himself your mentor will you accept the point? As a joke I can accept it as I had stated so earlier but when the person repeats it as if it’s true should we leave the comments unchallenged and people might assume that it is true?

If you still think I am aggressive please state which aspect; Marketing or replies? Please be specific and highlight the errant words and phrases that you have adjudged that I am guilty of.

I do not take kindly to people making sweeping statements
without giving specific examples and I am guilty of aggressive response to untruths alluded to in the Vietnam posting regarding the tour eg that I don’t have any packaged tours to Vietnam or that the allusion that I might be a fly-by-night operator.

Can you imagine that I attend Loh Yew Kwong’s computer class
and than I tell him he should call me Mentor in the field of computers( I am actually a BIG FAT ZERO in this field ).I don’t know what field of expertise you are in but imagine that you are a banker and I call myself your mentor and Guru in banking? Ridiculous isn’t it? Can you accept it?

I know that my PR leaves much to be desired and has room for improvement..that I can accept as constructive criticism.
Do you think I should have kept silent and let untruths and allusions and aspersions be cast on myself or the company that I represent. If this state of affairs continue than every member will think that I can silenced and bullied into submission with cheap potshots and they have a field day and an open season of hunting and shooting.

To date I have not received A reply from the person who suffered the headaches when I asked for specifics other than the points I had admitted to and apologised for.I do hope you will response to my thoughts on a point-by -point basis

Ref #34 and all other points regarding my unwieldy sentences
I will readily accept although it is hard for a leopard to change his spots…still trying …work in progress.Terence ,Danz,Ronald , Yew Kong and Tim have patiently and kindly told me to improve on my long-windedness as well..I do humbly accept this tag.I hope I have shown that I can accept criticism when it is well meant, positive and constructive and not live in my Ivory Tower.Name calling without evidence and facts would cause me indigestion and discomfort…that I can do without.Any comments on the tour proper and pricing and itinerary.

    Your most long-winded SHC member

P.S. maybe I should not be a EO ( due bad PR ) but ride quietly in the background as a co-chair…than perhaps less heat and controversy.Would that help?

  30. After 37 posts, lots of talk and no volunteers. Put your hands up where your mouth is, guys.

Pat, I think you make an excellent EO. Very meticulous, careful and planned.

If you need, I will ghost write for you and do some PR. You can’t go on this way. You will be going up alone.

The rest of you. Stop playing with your hands below the table.

  31. Hi Patrick Khoo at # 37,

    1) AGAIN your infamous LONG WINDED comment at #37 approx 1000 words in an A4 sized paper. BEH TA HAN !

THis are the CONSEQUENCES that you face now by being
SOOOO LOOONG WINDED! …..I guess you guys lost track of my dwindling trip members as the trip numbers were falling down like 9 pins or is it 10 pins ?

I TOTALLY AGREED with Kenneth’s V. WISE comment at #32 that with a grp of 4 the trip can still proceed as intended.

NO need so many advices by Travel Agencies. More Confusion!

As your ( Patrick’s )company is located at Beach Road,I am sure you know that there are many bus ooaches from various tourist agencies at Golden Mile, Beach Road that will transport passengers to Malacca main bus terminal.

I would like to repeat what Kenneth has said earlier at
    comment # 32.

I think it VERY PRACTICAL of him to hi light to you that :_

…..A Malacca trip is an EASY DO IT YOURSELF(D.I.Y.) even if you choose to go by bus.

You can check in at many small hotels along Jln Tun Tan Cheng Lock like the Puri and Baba House. This is right in the middle of the shopping, night markets and eating chendol experience at Jongker Street with many long houses.

In Malacca.you can practically WALK and NO need for TAXI to everywhere. Take a taxi to other destinations like Makhota Parade or the Portuguese Village; you WON’T even need a CAR!

But there again, what can tour or travel agencies do if everyone goes the DIY route? Everywhere.

If you want to pamper yrself/others ,stay at Markota Hotel just as in our previous grp visit ( Terence Seah ,Ron Wie, Steven Chan , Gywneth and Linda Chang ) have stayed 1 night in an executive suite with ( 2 separate bedrooms , 1 for guys and 1 for ladies :- NOT ORGY night, please Ha! Ha! )

    Till then,
” Your still unsolicited auditor cum mentor. ”

  32. Hi Patrick khoo,

….I like to repeat the hi lighted comment
for it has FALLEN to deaf ears….After my ENJOYABLE tour to HCMC, any news abt my intended Manila tour and Boraclay Paradise Islands in the Philippines tentatively in Dec 08?

Is Dec a RAINING season month? Pls. reply.

TO DATE,you have STILL NOT replied to my above request after about 1 week. Be MORE FOCUSED ! and stop being
    ” too defensive. ”

    Till then,
” Your unsolicited auditor cum mentor. ”

  33. Steven @ #39
“stay at Markota Hotel just as in our previous grp visit ( Terence Seah ,Ron Wie, Steven Chan , Gywneth and Linda Chang ) have stayed 1 night in an executive suite”

    Ahem….

I am not the one who put up the no sex rule. So I won’t say anything.

But, Ron, I really can’t understand your taste. What do you see in Ter?

    Hee-hee

  34. Steven @ #40

Nah… only kidnapping, typhoon and torrential floods to worry about.

Don’t bring an umbrella. Bring a raft. Hee-hee.

“The Filipinos especially in the northwest part of The Country including Manila divide their year into three seasons: winter from December through February with dry, cool weather, summer from March through May with dry, hot weather, and the rainy season from June through November with thunderstorms and typhoons.

However, sometimes there are anomalies in the weather pattern. For example, in 1985, June had almost continuous rainfall in most of Luzon, and after that, no more; in 1986 there was a typhoon as late as the end of December; and in 1987, November and December had more rain than the supposed rainy season in the months before.”

  35. Hi KT, Steven, Patrick and all,

Firstly it is not easy to organise any trip that you have to arrange the transport depending on driver with car, as the cost changes quite alot without his car at the last minute.

Steven, to be fair to Patrick you actually just got a few guys to with you on a Package Tour that will go on,even with only you being the only one going, so it is a different ball game.
Secondly let us be sensitive to another person kind gesture to hint and his gentle reminders. I am sure you know which remark he is alluding to. Only if all of us can pay heed to each other situation, sensitivities and respond in a timely manner, can SHC be a better place for everyone.

Patrick, I know you are trying to offer much more than a normal tour, but as mentioned by many, this forum/posting is not the right place. It would be 10 times more effective just to say in 1 sentence, ‘Malacca getway 2 days 1 night ,Resort Hotel, in private car for only $88, covering all local attrations,Nyonya Lunch,Chendol,Chicken rice,Laksa,Satay Celup, etc ‘ then provide the details to only the people who are really interested.

If you post your details for all to see, you are inviting scrutiny of the unknown or unexpected kind from people who many not even be involved be intending to go. Let those people who have travelled with you, compliment after the trip and also by word of mouth.

Kenneth, your DIY tour style only suite people like you, who have weeks instead of days to roam the streets at your own time. I actually did what you say you did in Chengmai, but it was when I had 5 days, and can cycle on the streets. I must say your detailed guide was comprehensive and informative and really helpful when used with the local tourist’s magazines together. Do you have any guide for Europe or China for backpacker travellers like me ??

Patrick, just one suggestion in preparation for the Dec holidays, why not used the opportunity of the Mid-Autumn festival to set up a travel booth/table/corner,(Charge is only $5 and table $5. You can then prepare packages and brochures and have more time to really explain the details of what you are offering in a conducive manner.

You can start preparing for packages to Phuket, ChiangMai or Bangkok for a start and get the response then really spend some time to show and explain in detail how much more they can benefit from your packages. Such tour packages are better plan over a cup of coffee/tea/cakes(pls provide coffee/tea/cakes, I can provide hot water and cups/plates) in a conducive environmnet not over at Han’s or any coffeee shop and of definitely not with any competitor.

If I were you I would not plan the same package that Steven Chan is planning, plan something else that other people want.
Lastly KT Wong, can you for once provide something tangible/palatable for the Mid-autumn Festival some simple casino strategy/or a bottle of your expensive wine, that has work for you. There is ample time on Friday/Saturday nights to try out your strategy between you and me and Terence, whatever it is you were suggesting. Cheers

  36. Hi Steven

Since Ronald has written, I wish to add more. I am MORE FOCUSED, which I believe is what you want. My quips are usually short and sharp, not so sweet perhaps.

I coined the phrase “unsolicited auditor” so let me explain. According to the Oxford Dictionary, an auditor is a person who does official scrutiny of accounts. You are not checking Patrick’s account so how can you say you are his auditor, solicited or otherwise?

As far as I am concerned, there is only one mentor in Singapore. He is 85 years old and his two sons and a daughter are very successful leaders. Anybody else who claims to be a mentor needs to check his head for he/she may be suffering from some kind of “mentor problem”.

    Your “unsolicited English fanatic”

  37. Ref #40 If you do not trust me with your phone number you should make inquiries with your Vietnam travel agent who did your last trip.

You should refer to Joan Wong’s post on Travel Thoughts on #34 on how to make a travel booking. Example how many persons, type of hotels, how many days in Manila,How many days in Boracay? ,exact dates? What tours required or Free and Easy, which airline ? budget or mainstream, morning flight or
afternoon flight.Imagine how many e-mails we have to send to each other before we get down to actual booking and exact itinerary. You have the luxury of going round the World but I don’t.I might quote you the lowest fare and by the time you make up your mind the flights on the lower booking classes are full and you will blame me.Be warned …you must book early …December is super peak… a lot of maids go back on home leave for Christmas from late November onwards right up to early January 2009.

I am not comfortable communicating on the forum to plan an itinerary for you.If you are seriously contemplating to go than contact me directly by phone. If not I will humbly decline your invaluable business.I am not a specialist on Boracay(although I do know it has one of the top beaches in the world) unlike Vietnam where I am a wholesaler with 10 standard tour packages.

If you really like my service so much
I would suggest you select your tour agency and inform me which one you have deliberated on after checking around(which I believe is your usual style).I will then proceed to book for u through this agency at the same price unless u can get a further discount from them.In this manner I can give you better service …don’t have to travel up and down to make payments and better (window or aisle)seats on board the flights and together as well.If u do get a further discount then go ahead and book with them.

Douglas Chan contacted me through the SHC website and made an enquiry for his company with 20 pax going on a trip.Whether the trip goes to my company or not I gave him prompt service but admitted that the destination was not my speciality and i am sure he will make further enquiries in future even if this trip does not go to me this time.No need for a drama inquiry through this forum and make a spectacle out of a simple trip.

A word of caution…there are safer places than Manila to visit at this point in time but Boracay is relatively safe and insulated.

Just curious… did you take my advice on seating on your Vietnam trip.
Did you get 5 seats together or did you plan to seat seperately from the single room pax and the 2 charming ladies. If the service was great you should consult them for this trip.

I shall now deal with your persistence on calling yourself my mentor and your insistence on going ahead with my Malacca trip despite the fact that there was one lady and 2 guys left with no car…you still keep insisting there are 4 pax…Besides Stef Lim(no confirmation),Yew Kwong and myself I wonder who the 4th pax is?Perhaps you need a translator, a Maths tutor(to distinguish between 3 and 4)or some magnifying glasses (since u can’t read the fine print in word press).

Imagine that you go on the Vietnam trip alone with the 2 ladies(one way to get undivided attention) and you pay for a single room and have to pay for the single supplement…simply not worth it.This situation applies with Stef Lim even if she didn’t mind the company of Yew Kwong and myself.Besides all 3 of us have been to MKZ before and just the 3 of us is just not feasible and less fun.Yew Kwong has accepted the cancellation …why can’t you.No comfort of car and going to Alor Gajah by taxi and paying extra for single room…too cost prohibitive. No wonder you cannot be my mentor in travel as you keep making mistakes and even with good advice you still didn’t solve it in the best possible and cost effective manner. You are lucky that you have such a loyal, understanding, patient group of 5 to Vietnam.

I know you are a long time and venerable member who commands a loyal following as you have organised well attended and popular events previously but leave Travel to your travel agent or the professionals who know best and dont be so napsu(Malay for overly keen) to be my Mentor in Travel…as a mentor should know more than the pupil on the subject in question and it is up to the pupil to accept someone as his mentor and the mentor has to earn that respect and not by self – proclaimation. I know it would not be in my best interests to return your sniper fire but why do you persist in propogating aspersions and holier than thou proclaimations in the face of facts and arguments that have been put foward and leave yourself vulnerable to rebuttals?

    Ref #19 and #35
Still awaiting your replies and clarification . T.K.O
All quiet on the Eastern Front…still taking cover in Chu Chi tunnels perhaps?

Curiously not a single negative comment on pricing of 10% discount from list prices and itinerary proper.I must be doing something right.Although admittedly poor response means bad P.R on my part due to snuffing out people who take
pot shots and indulge in name calling without backing it up with facts and valid points.

    Ref #43
Appreciate your input and advise but people don’t seem to see your point. Will consider seriously and then take cover in Command Bunker and go into meditation but reserve the right to return fire from wild pot shots.P.S Can Ronald or anybody else tell me where is the best Satay Celup(roast meat and seafood dipped in satay curry). The last one I knew of at Dunman road has disappeared. There is one near Cathay cinema for $15 buffet(all u can eat) but average in quality and value only

Another long -winded post (when will I ever learn? Maybe trying to break record for most long – winded post).Anybody has a word counter?

  38. Hi there, mayb all of us shd avoid lengthy commts unless absolute necessary as this is costing $$$ n taken up space. Some of you may not be aware that Terence had been footing a certain amt to maintain this SHC website. Not sure how much as he did not want 2 impose this amt 2 members eventhough some of us did volunteer to pay. But what I understand, the amt had been increasing over the year. I am sure that eventhough after this, Terence will still said that amt is not issue so long everybody are still giving commts but then, we shd be more understanding, rite?

  39. Hahaha!!

Really appreciate what Terence is doing for SHC and this website.

Maybe we should charge members by the word for their comments on this forum. And the more and longer words and longest posts get to pay an ERP surcharge!!

  40. Hi Patrick Khoo,

…Ref #40 If you do not trust me with your phone number,

If I had done so, I think I would be DEAF by your LONG WINDEDNESS by now. Ha! Ha! Take it with a pinch of bitter gourd.

  41. Patrick – to answer your question, “Anybody has a word counter?”

Your last comment, #45 has 1042 words

Your TOTAL words for this post is 5549. Characters 25,200 (not including spaces)

  42. Ref comments #46 #47 #48 #49 #50
such friendly banter is an improvement even though critical
    as it is well meant.

    ref #46
I wish you would comment on issues involved and verbally spank both of us(big babies)as I know you will be impartial.Shall I take it lying down and be a sitting duck and suffer silently while its open season for duck hunting or was it wallaby? At least after various admonitions the mentor title has been dropped in post #48 and this post is my shortest for a long long time…work in progress…getting there.

  43. I use to catch a nap after reading Beng’s post. But with Pat, I have to take half time. It’s like watching Ben-Hur’s rerun except the horses refuse to stop.

    Ken @ #47
    Electronic Reading Price (SHC’s ERP).

Three gantries. Introduction, Main story and Conclusion. Sequentially. No cheating. Can’t just buy Conclusion.

    Hee-hee

  44. Patrick #51,

Well done, this is the way. Ideal comment length. Probably you are busy, that’s why no time to write. Quite strange though, our web designer sets 15 lines as the max, but somehow, this does not seem to work with SHC.

As for others, don’t feel tempted to reply daily if your name is abused. I think this is part of growing old. As part of my job, I have been visiting newspaper plants; and these machinese generate high decibels. So, I used ear plugs. Not just SHC forum, but other forums too, we should occassionally use the eye mask too.

Guys and Gals, have fun. Enjoy, there is a difference between spending money and making money. I enjoy both though.

    Terence Seah
