“Upgrading” of SHC website.

Hi Administrator, Terence & Web designer,

For the past few weeks I have been talking to SHC members, and quite a number seemed and is still having the same problems as I have. I don’t know whether its my computer { I am using Windows XP } or has it got to do with the web design.

The main page of the SHC website is beautiful, in its larger colourful font and beautifully arranged. I can change the size of the fonts as I wish, as per norm, for this SHC main page and for my Email too.

There the "upgrading" stops.

The moment I click on the ‘Latest Comment’ ……..frustration sets in…….

1. The font size is miniscule…..despite a lot of help by fellow members, am not able to change the size. It is a strain on the eyes to read.

2. Whilst on this page, I am unable to get into the posting to read up and add my comments, should I wish to do so. I practically have to search the whole website for the posting.

3. In addition eg., Yew Kwong’s help in giving the path to transportation details for the next monthly meeting, again this was not accessible by clickin on address. So his offer of help is defeated.

4. The E-mail address of the commentator is now missing.

5. I have hunted high & low for the ‘User’ button to change my password. Have not found it yet.

I hope this is not regarded as nit picking.

But to my mind this ‘upgrading’ is about taking 1 step forward and 5 steps back.

Please advise if there is any way we can have the same ease we had with the previous web site.

For a non savvy computer user, I was able to navigate it with the minimum of problems.

Hope there is help in the horizon.

Thanks for your attention……………Jie

  1. Jie, Terence.

#1I agree with Jie on the ‘Latest Comments’ font size. It’s too small.

#2 Jie,you could go to the top right hand corner and type in the post you are looking for and you will be brought there, but I think it would help a lot to just reply to a comment directly from the comment itself, like before.

#4 I also think the email addresses should be made available like before.

In my opinion, the layout before is more user friendly than this present one.

So Terence, can something be done to rectify these issues?

  2. Hi Jie

I can try 2 answer some if not all –

    1. I can read comfortably at my laptop n desktops, at home n office, at text size set 2 “medium” in Internet Explorer (IE). Go 2 Menu Bar in IE, click “View”, “Text Size” n “Medium”. If u wld prefer u can select “larger”.

    4. 4 security purpose, I understand tat tis feature is disabled.

    Possible causes –

    1) IE is outdated n nid 2 install newer ver.
    2) Active X is not installed.
    3) Some setting in ur system is blocking ur access.
    4) Lastly, u may nid 2 reinstall ur operating system.

Can help u 2 chk ur Computer. Just send or bring it down my plc on the wkend. Alternatively, u can oso send it 4 a reliable workshop 4 chkg n fault finding. Tis will help 2 resolve ur woes once n 4 all.

Overall I find the upgrading is fine xcept tat access is rather slow at times. Cld be due 2 heavy traffic logging in.

After your post on the “upgrading” my print on the comment was so big – my niece was laughing – like teaching the small children to read (haha0

  4. I would like to thank all who have tried to help me previously and now, in my problem with the SHC website. Especially ‘William’ who called and tried to solve the problem yesterday.
I understand these problems are not only peculiar to me or my computer, and wish the affected members will put in their 2 cents worth.
I can be as patient as the next person regarding the font in the ‘Latest Comment’. Hopefully, it will be resolved soon.
In Ref. to #2, #3 & #4. Is security the reason for withdrawing these convenient features????
Correct me if I am wrong, I thought only SHC members with passwords are allowed beyond the main page of SHC. I don’t think there was any dire breach of trust previously, except for a couple of unscrupulous members. Are we members as a whole being penalised because of them????
The reason I wrote this post is to highlight the teething and frustrating problems of the new website. Just in case the computer savvy is unaware of the problems of the, maybe obsolete computer owners, or un-savvy computer user.
Again, my 2 cents worth as a member of SHC……….Jie

  5. I have an even more strange encounter. My username & password gets distorted. Sometimes, i am unable to log in to post my comments. I got lucky with this one!

  6. I am pleasantly surprised to see that the words in Latest Comments are in bold and bigger. I don’t suppose my eyes are playing tricks on me…

  7. Terence, What an improvement. The words are bolder and much clearer! Thank you.
Now, for the next bit, hehe. Is there any way we can reply directly from the comments instead of searching for the post every time?
Also, could we have the email addresses next to the names of the persons who put up the comments?

  8. Hi Mary, Jie, everybody,

“Reply from the latest comments” and “adding the email address” being attended to. Need a bit more time. For info, the email is currently not provided, because this prevents web robots from harvesting the email for spamming purposes.

  9. AAArgh Terence,
    Thank you so much.
Now I don’t have to bend forward and squint to read the latest comments, which I have skipped lately.
Looking forward to the next chapter of the upgrading.

  10. Hi Admin,

I though when comments are under moderation, we members cannot see it at all. Up till now, it still can be seen.

Currently, there are 5 comments under MODERATION and yet we can see ALL of them in bright YELLOW.

I thought when a comment is under moderation, members will not be able to see it but this is not the case.

What is the point of moderation when members can see the moderated comments from our own members.

It really makes NO difference between a moderated and a NON-moderated one. :(

    Good night ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  11. Hi StevenC,

I have a response to your question; and I believe this is not the first time, you ask this question.

I guess by the time you read this comment, you will find you cannot read the moderated comments anymore.
