Jamming, making music of early 70s, for fun.

Last year,  me , Daniel and someone started jamming , me on guitar, Dan on drums and that someone on organ.   However,  Daniel found someone and together they played  better music in a lovely and captivating way that drove him to live overseas almost immediately.

To make the story short, I happened to have met another friend who was the drummer when we jammed in the early 70’s playing song by Eagles, early rock, etc. He is still keen on jamming for fun and so am looking for anyone who plays any instrument  to jam for fun with us, once in a while.  Cheers

  1. Hi RonW

I love the idea of a JAM SESSION, had participated in jam sessions several times with friends, and had sang with them in the group.

Currently we have JAM SESSION with certain country clubs and also certain church groups. We have included dance sessions as well, social and line dances.

No doubt I am not able to play any musical instruments, except harmonica, can lend you my voice, keep me in the tact.

  2. hi ron wie

great idea ! m game. altho cannot play ani instruments, can contribute one percussion bit….clapping…hahaha….but can sing a little n b audience

  3. Ron W. I can still remember the jam session we had at Daniel’s place when we visited him in JB. It was fun. I don’t play any instrument although I used to sing in my younger days. But the years of teaching has reduced my vocal chords to more of a croak, haha and my range is limited. Too much strain on them. If you don’t mind a ‘frog’, I am game. Like Esther said, can clap along, haha.

  4. Hi all,

Good, hope there will be more of us who can play some kind of instrument.

Eleanor, can you play the organ too? Will you be able to read simple pop music and play along then we can have a jam.

Seems maybe we can start with a simple jam and have those who want to sing to perform for fun in a small group. The rest can join in the sing a long and just have fun.

  5. Hi Lydia and all,

Sure jam anywhere not only at Kukup, do it in West, East or Central as long as a few of you all can meet and revised what you all have learn before.

  6. Hi Ronald Wie

No, I’ve never played the organ. I’d need to refresh myself on reading notes again as I stopped my piano lessons at 15. Although I did up to Grade 5, the only pieces I can play now are Fur Elise, Sweet Bye and Bye and the usual scales.

  7. Hi Ronald, Would like to jam with you guys if you are not particular on the level of competency. I paly the guitar and the bass guitar. Let me know if I could be of any service.

  8. Hee hee Esther Leong,
I don’t think RonW wants us around, clapping. He hasn’t responded to our comments ;-)
We can sing along can’t we? So how Ron Wi? Can’t play any musical instrument but used to play the organ.

  9. Hi Anthony Koh,

Good to hear you can play the guitar and bass. Will sent you the songsheets and chords so that you will know what songs we will be playing.

For those ladies who wants to sing, and be the backup dancers, please select choose your songs, but 2 at the most for one singer, in case we dont know the first song, hopefully we know the second. But if we have time we will try the second song as well.

Eleanor, I can bring a simple organ and you can just follow the chords to the song and follow the rhythm, maybe you will start liking pop songs after this.

  10. Hi RonW

    1. Where is the venue? date/time?

    2. What are the titles of the songs you musicians will be playing?

    3. Can you play Mandarin songs of 60s – 70s? I’ll provide the song/score sheets.

    Tks.

    Jassmine

  11. Hi Jasmine, Karen, Anthony and all

Yes if you provide the music sheet, then does not matter what songs they are, that can be a good start to try reading. But I can request that those who want to sing try to pick songs that we can do line dance with ??

Anthony what about you, also what songs do you usually play.
I guess you do have your guitar, electric I guess?

About our first practice, hymm anyone has a place/room somewhere to do a little practice ? But first and foremost I have to get all the songs sheet first and work out with Anthony first.

So Anthony can you write to me or call me anytime at bswi@yahoo.com hp, 91519301 Cheers

  12. RonaldW, sorry cannot do any, cannot sing, cannot play any instrument, but still interested to be there to enjoy the musical fun. Can bring along my Casio portable, LK55.

  13. Ron Wi, it’s ‘jamming’. Now you want ‘back up dancers’ (?) and line dance too. You practise when you get together for the jam. If you need practices and rehearsals, it’s going to become a performance, no more a jam session.
Sounds too complicated. When I had jam sessions, it’s all impromptu. Pick up an instrument or two and sing whatever we can.
Like Charles Wee said, I will be there for the ‘musical fun’. Probably clapping with Esther, hee hee.

  14. Hi Mary, yes let us be merry and easy lah no need to be so bloody ready for a performance. What I meant is if you can do whatever turns you on, be singing, clapping, chorussing the ‘oh wah wah,oh wah wah’ and geleking like the backup dancers, you are free to do so.

Anyway Anthony will be coming over to my place at Serangoon garden this Sat about 7pm to jam a little. It will be outside the garden, rather the bush garden. So it will be like the old days kampung style, outside the house under the moon, disturbing the neighbours kind of thing more the insects and birds in the bush.

So those who want to jam for fun you are free to come, just byob after dinner. Supper can be at chomp chomp. email me for the address/directions.

Maybe after a few sessions we can go and cheer the old age homes during Xmas, that is why we need backup chourus and dancers.

    Cheers

  15. Hi Ron W.

I would very much like to join you in your first jam, but this sat clashes with our Independance Day concert @ Sembawang.

Pls keep me informed on the next jam session.

    Cheers.

  16. Hi Ron,

If you can get a bassist and a keyboardist, you all can drop by for a jam.I have a music room with a full set of instruments at my place.Preferably during the day or weekends.

    enjoy!!!

  17. Hi Dannyboy, and all,

How this for good news, Anthony is the bassist, I can play lead/rhytm, and you have a whole set of instruments so I guess you play drums and everything. Ok good email me at bswi@yahoo or call 91519301 we can jam this weekend, maybe Sunday afternoon after 3.30pm ?

  18. Ronald

This subject being talking for quite awhile already, when are u ppl getting started , i am very keen to be the supporter .

    karen

  19. Oh Dannyboy, the pipes the pipes are calling,
And we are all waiting, so email bswi@yahoo.com, about this sunday or whenever you can and we can see about the jam, maybe just only the boys in the band.

The ladies/clappies just hold on to your pants, until we have the plan. Cheers

  20. Hi all,

Please take note the jams on Mon 7th will be strictly for the musicians to get their act together.
We have to look at the songs, arrangements, tempo and each other preference and interpretation etc.
Only then we will invite singers, clappers, groupies etc in that order.
So be patient as we are also looking for a suitable venue or music studios, so cost sharing will be involved.

So once again, thanks for the enthusiasm, support,so standby just a little longer, but dont come to the bush garden yet at Serangoon garder, you might get traumatised.

  21. Hi all,

Ok the 3 piece band 2 guitarists and 1 drummer/guitarist/keyboard , minus our dannyboy did meet up and had a good practice for a start. We are looking for a keyboardist but he/she has to be current in her playing skills and can learn any song within 3 to 5 mins.

Now we have to look for a place to jam and those who want to sing, but you must have experience singing in a band cause it is really different from Karaoke, can submit your songs to my email. You have to know the key that you sing for each song as we will not have time to work out with every song. We easily try about 15 to 10 songs in an hour.

We will try to work out your songs and will let you all know if there is place to have a jam. Cheers

  22. Hi RonaldW,

I see you have got started with a 3 piece band – 2 guitarists and 1 drummer/guitarist/keyboard. You are also looking for a place, guess this is always one of our hurdles. What kind of place are you looking for? Do you need to park your equipment there all the time?

    Terence Seah

  23. Ronald Wie

Try making enquiry from “8Degree” located at North One.

We used to go there for the 70 type of music. The place is very big but I do not know if they provide the musical instrument. The ban only play on Fri & Sat …so the rest of the week , it is very quiet and not crowd at all.

I dont have the tel no, u can go into the web to check.

It will be big enough to hold more than 50 SHCian…

Please check it out. When I read Terence msg about having problem with the place, this place came into my mind.

  24. Hi RonW @# 29

I’ve no experience singing with a live band but am interested to give it a try. Can or not?

Will fax you my song/music sheet(s)if can.

    Tks.

    Jassmine

  25. Hi Jassmine,

Its OK please email your song selections and indicate your vocal key to Ronald Wie, YOU DON’T NEED to have experience singing with a live band as this is just a fun thing. What Ronald Wie is just asking for is that the singer just need to have the basic musical sense of beat/timing. We will ask for you music sheet only if it is a complicated piece.

  26. Hi Terence,

Yes, but just a small music studio, preferably with the musical setup, etc. Lydia did suggest Tanglin club and Karen the 8 degree , where is it ?
Will try to look at the Tanglin one first and see how we can rent to use it.
Meanwhile those who are keen to sing as Anthony says keep the songs coming but you have to be able to sing karaoke well enough so it will be easy for everyone.
For a start we will try to play as many line dance songs as we can, and others as requested or submitted by the singers.
Terence, you thinking of trying out , send us your song then ?

  27. Hi Ronald Wie & Anthony

I ever sing karaoke with live band for a short period and find it very interesting as I can select the key like A, B, C or Ab, Bb and the beat of 1:84, 1:90, 1:110 etc. Have also gone through vocal training.

I have always thinking of practise with musical band and hope that I can give it a try with you all. I have song sheets specially written out by the band instructor.

    Cheers
    Annie Loh

  28. Hi Annie,

I may be wrong but my perception of this so called “jammin” is for SHC members to come together to sing and maybe provides opportunity for those who have never taken centre stage or sing to an audience or with a live band, to experience it. To do something one have never done before or do again what you have done before, and who knows maybe for some the next stage is the Singapore Idol !

Speaking for myself only, I would’nt mind if those wanting to sing have never karaoked or sing with live band before. Have fun but do respect the fellow SHC audience and not subject them to 3-5 minutes of torturous granting sound.

I am not formally music trained so not get upset should I hit the wrong chord, could not read your music sheets, etc.

    Cheers!!

  29. Hi Anthony and all,

Yes that was the originally intention that is to have fun, and if we do make mistakes, sing an off key note sometime it is ok as long as everyone is having fun. Anthony, by the way please get your friend Ronald too, to sign up as a member.

He is definitely a valuable member being a semi-pro drummer ,guitarist and keyboardist too. Incidentally he was a former line dance instructor and knows at least 200 line dance songs and dance steps so he will surely get us on the right foot and steps.

But we will also play all other popular songs be it waltz, rock, or tango if we can play it reasonable well. Cheers

  30. Ronald Wie,

Yes my friend Ronald C, will have a lot to contribute to SHC. Musically, I have played with him as members of an electric band covering a wide variety of types of music, and on accoustics-only at sing along and Homes visitations during christmas season.

I have already introduced him to SHC website and he will be reading this posting I am sure. He is much more a socialite than I am (not quite saying that I am one) but whether he sign up or not will be up to him. Maybe you guys can entice him ha ha.

  31. I know of another music studio in Geylang, if you guys are keen, i will check it out. Price is $15 for one hour. Instruments provided.

The place in Tanglin CC is no longer available.

Another place is my condo’s karaoke room. But you would have to bring your own instruments. One plus point with my condo, is that we can have karaoke jam as well. Also, pot-luck jam too. Perhaps some dancing as well. If you guys are keen, we can find a convenient day/time and i will need to book the room.

    Comments from interested musicians/singers, pls?

You can also drop me an email. Or sms.

    Cheers, Lydia.

  32. Hi all new members,

Any of you plays the keyboard? We are in the midst of having a complete band with drummer and 3 guitarist and a chorus of ladies wanting to sing.

We are also looking for a studio(band) to jam, and if anyone knows somewhere good let us know.
Next band jam is on this Sunday 27th 3pm – 6pm, at Geylang Studio.
    Cheers

  33. Calling all those interested in music, either to play guitar, drums, keyboard. Or you may just like to sing along. We’re having a music jam on 17th August, from 6pm till 10pm. Venue : Pinevale Condominium @ Tampines. Please register your interest on this thread. There will also be a potluck session. Perhaps some karaoke too. If you need more info on the jam sessions, drop me an email lydiachin@dbs.com

    Cheers, Lydia.

  34. Hi all,

I have to really thank Lydia for not only responding to join the jam but also to organise this event. For those who have responded to the earlier jam events and the 3rd Aug event please take note the 3rd Aug event has been moved to the 17th Aug as above. I appreciate her action to respond so positively for her love of singing and hope many more such people will act like her without thinking too much about politics or cost, etc.

So far we have 10 people already and most would like to try out singing with a live music which is really something different. Even if there are 10 singers with each taking about 5 mins to try out each song it will mean only trying 2 to 3 songs at the most. So Lydia I would rather limit it to about 15 singers at the most, so that each singer can at least try 2 songs for the night.

So hurry, if you dont want to miss this jam. There may be a semi-pro guitarist to help me along too. Those who have reponded are , Jasmine, Annie, Linda, Ron n Alice, Jessie, John (guitarist).
Also please try to indicate what potluck you will be bringing here in this posting. But sent the songs you want to try out to me, including the lyrics or music sheets.

Ron Wie – Mutton/Chicken Brani enough small portion for all
    Cheers

  35. Hi Lydia @# 42

Tks for initiating this musical evening. I’ll be there and will be bringing fruit for the pot-luck.

    Hi RonW @# 43

Will send song titles and music sheets by 11/8. Do you have a fax machine?

Aiyoh, feeling a little bit nervous already! lol!

  36. Hi Ronald Wie & Lydia

Linda Chang will bring watermelon and I will bring konoyaku jelly with corn.

    Lydia

Kindly tell us how to go to your place.

  37. Hi Karen, Jasmine, Annie, Linda, Ron & Alice.

Pls drop me an email. I will reply with address details, etc via email, closer to the date. Can you also indicate what songs you’ll like to sing, and the food item that you’ll be bringing. Please also cc. RonWie in your email too. It’s easier for me to manage via email. Hope it’s ok with you.

    Cheers, Lydia.

  38. We had a really good time during our music jam last night. But, we do need more musicians & singers, ie. those who can play an instrument & can sing in good timing & rhythm. And also those seriously interested to learn. Pls use this thread, if you’re keen. At the moment, we only have RonW, as the sole guitarist.
