Health Benefits of Swimming

– Swimming is a good exercise. Swimming involves the use of almost all the muscles required for movement, without the weight of your body pounding you with each move like when you are walking or running.emoticon

– Water resistance is greater than air resistance, so that the muscles have to work harder.

– Regular swimming will build your muscle strength, endurance, and cardio-vascular fitness. The longer you swim, the more your endurance and speed will improve.

– Without overworking the heart, swimming improves the body’s use of oxygen and increases lung function.

– Swimming stimulates circulation.emoticon

– Swimming promotes proper breathing.

– Swimming helps to combat the aging process.

– Swimming burns calories at about 3 calories a mile per pound of bodyweight and improves one’s ability to control and maintain a healthy weight.

– Swimming is fantastic for toning the upper arms, shoulders and legs. The best strokes for whole body toning are the freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke.

When you swim, cool water lower your body temperature, so that you don’t get hot and sticky as when you do other forms of exercise or sports.

– Swimming is more than a fun sport and a way to stay healthy.emoticon

Well, I am tempted to start swimiing session on a Sunday morning from 9.00-11.00am. Not many will go for the vigorous badminton because of niggling pain to the knees!

Need I say more, Swimming session starts somewhere in October. There may be coaching lesson too, let’s me check the rate.

How about some feedbacks?

  1. Our first swimming session starts with only two swimmers at Safra Mount Faber.

Probably the location that kept most of you away. While I did almost twenty laps with free and breast styles, Eleeanor was the better and stronger swimmer!

She did more laps than me, I have a hard time trailing along! Next swimming meet will likely be the Club near Orchard. Will keep you inform.

    Danz

  2. Hi Eleanor,

Okay, we will lap it up! Those not able to do the lap, don’t worry we can still do the breast or back stroke. No stress, just enjoying the benefits of swimming.

    See you folks!

    Dan

  3. Hi Eleanor,

So far we have some who hinted that they are coming!

Kathryn Lee, Charles Wee, Steven Chan, Eleanor Chan and Danz Huang.

My regular session at the pool, ten laps continuous free-style in an Olympic size pool, who want to tag along with me?

We meet on September 6, 2008 (Saturday)
    Venue: Safra Mount Faber
    Time: 9.00-11.00am.

    Dan

  4. Terence,

No time to search for the actual thread, so I use Danz’s “Health Benefits of swimming” thread because it has to do with swimming also. Just want to inform you that I have booked the Multi-purpose room and the AV room at Kovan Melody for our Swimming Day on 19 Oct 2008 from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm. Cheers ! :)

    Ah Nee

  5. Dear Yew Kwong,

Are you sure about the face towel. Where on earth did you get that. No towel provided at Mount Faber!

After our swim at Safra Mount Faber, next venue is the pool recommended by Eleanor where towel will be provided.

    Dan

  6. Hi Eleanor,

Okay, we will set a realistic date. Saturday September 6, 2008.

    Those coming please indicate!

    Dan

  7. Hi Eleanor

Okay, will schedule our first swimming session on October 6, 2008 on a Saturday morning from 9.00am-11.00am.

The venue is Safra Mount Faber. Will consider alternative venue!

  8. Freda, one other option is to speak to the life guards at the Sengkang pool. Some of them conduct swimming lessons on their off days. The other option is to take lessons at a swim school. Actually, my preference is the swim schools because we learn the correct strokes from the start.

Dan, any possibility of having your swim sessions on Saturdays? Then I can join all of you. (Church service on Sunday mornings.)

  9. Hi Freda,

Both my friend not available to coach for Sengkang.

Try Vivian Lai, she’s a swimming coach with SHC. Her mobile on the post1

  12. Dolly, I know her. Hai Kou…….? I dont know him. What’s Dolly doing with a water dog or walrus? Her new beau or what? Or training for the first SHC circus show?

  13. …..Like to show off my butts during the Oct 2008 Swimming Day at Kovan. My waist is 32 inch, and if you can get something for me, less than SGD 50, it will be fun.
    I like the V-shape type.

Since you like it so skimpy, why not get a G-String instead. You NOT only show off your butts but…….

  14. Dolly dolly,

This business trip must be your longest stay in Hai Kou…goodie goodie you got plenty of time shopping shopping. I have not started my swimming lah, my new swimming costume still nicely wrapped up with the price tag on. So bo swim tio, mai lah, how to wear bikini when one don’t even know how to swim…”malu” leh. But hor if you see any nice cheap hairbands, can buy for me for Sat night fever. TQ and see you soon. :)

  15. Hi Dolly,

have you sometime for shopping in HaiKou? I meant buying a pair of swimming trunks for men. Like to show off my butts during the Oct 2008 Swimming Day at Kovan. My waist is 32 inch, and if you can get something for me, less than SGD 50, it will be fun. I like the V-shape type.

And to all new and swimmers, now that Dan has highlighted the benefits of swimming, let’s have the funniest fun Swimming Day in October. We have not found the EO for SHC Swimming Day yet, but am definitely eye’ing someone with a great body.

    Terence Seah

  16. Ooops…my mistake, no need to book the swimming pool. I meant to book the multi-purpose function room for the swimming cum gathering.

    Ah Nee

  17. Lina,
I agree with Suzhang, swimming can keep you so slim & swee swee. How I envy you, I wish I could swim. I just came back from my Condo Gym and I have been observing some residents (young & old) learning how to swim from an instructor. I told myself many times that I will talk to the instructor about swimming lessons, but till now, I have not done so. I think I need some pushing & motivation…….

Oh yah, Terence, is the swimming day on or off? I am going to book the swimming pool for 19 Oct (swimming day) next week. Cheers ! :)

    Ah Nee

  18. Hi Suzhang,

You and Ah Nee can take up swimming too. Fun and easy! The trouble is, Ah Nee has condo facilities, but never make use of them. Right Ah Nee? So when you going to start?

  19. Sengh swimns with a style which never fails to amaze me. It’s a bit like breast-style except that it’s not his head that pops above water but his backside at rhythm which also does the breathing evident from the bubbles).

He wades and paddles with his hands under his torso – and if you think it’s dog stroke you’re almost right bcos he does it better…….he barks.

And mind you, Sengh’s unique swim style torpedoes thru water faster than Phelps…………but alas, the Bejing Olymics cant think of a category where he can compete. Animals are not allowed. So sad.

  20. Hi Big Dan,

Swimming is the only exercise I do. Didn’t realise there are so many benefits to those water-splashing movements. I’d like to join your swimming session but Sunday mornings are out for me :(

I do see coaching lessons at the Farrer Park pool, for your info.

  21. Kathryn,

Besides the three strokes mentioned, there is butterfly stroke and caterpillar strokes!

The niggling pain is not my problem yet! I am thinking more for Tim Liu. Perhaps I may come to see you for other niggling pain?

Cat Yeo, how else would I get you out of your shell but disguise myself in various innuendo! Dan to distinguish myself from Daniel, Danz to add zest to my name! well, Big Dan the comic character, it’s also denotes something extraordinary in the area of manhood! How’. dat?

Charles Wee, how often to you swim and where?

Steven chan, thank for the concern! the likely venue is Safra Mount Faber!

    Big dan

  22. Hi Dan Huang,

I have been looking forward to this post for a long time which you say will be revived. And I am V.HAPPY that at long last,it has became a reality.

    …..niggling pain to the knees???
Dan you must have OVER-EXCITED yourself by having too many dancing sessions within a short time frame, Salsa,
    Cha Cha, Hip Hop,Break Dance,Waltz,Tango.etc….

I believe your knee cap has been sending you a message moons ago to you to take a break but you ignore it.

Or perhaps,as one ages the synovial fluid (a natural lubricant )between the knee joints is “drying” up and needs replacement like motor car engine oil.

Without sufficient synovial fluid, the knee joints are in contact with one another and that produces FRICTION which causes the NIGGLING PAIN to your knees!

    Anyway,come Oct…, Place?
Was it the same SAFRA which you had mentioned to me located at Mt. Faber ?

Take good care of your knees.

  23. First it was Daniel, then Dan followed by Danz and now Big Dan. Care to explain the evolution of your names? You appear to be like a chameleon, not changing colours to blend in with the environment but changing names to suit changing situations? Haha

  24. Hi Dan

Can swim, still can join the sessions? Out of curiosity, what other strokes are there besides the 3 strokes you mentioned?

For “niggling pain to the knees” – do come by my therapy centre I might be able to help relieve the pain.

    Cheers
    Kathryn
