Free & Easy trip to the Malaysian East Coast, 23 Sep 2008

Hi there,

Lim Tian Soo is again planning for another ‘free and easy’ trip, this time to the Malaysian east coast. We intend to leave Sgp on Sept 23rd, a Tuesday and be back about 6 or 7 days later.

As before we will be visiting the out of the way and non-touristy places. However there will be no shopping, or very minimal, and lots of sun , sea and sand.

First stop will be Kuantan, the beginning of the famous 200km beaches of the Malaysian east coast. We will detour to Lake Chini or perhaps Lake Kenyir. Both these lakes are man-made in that they were formed when the dam was built. Then we will work our way north towards Kota Bahru, stopping at the beaches in Telok Chempedak, Balok, Marang, Rantau Abang, Kuala Trengganu till we reach Besut, where we will hop aboard a boat to Pulau Perhentian, the northernmost islands of Malaysia. There are other islands on the east coast which we can stay if we are not successful in P. Perhentian. We will just have to see what this trip brings.

Along the way we will stay in modest accomodation, including home stays with the PAS members and eat in humble fare like the local folks.

We are looking for SHC members who are interested in this form of travel, preferably one with another car. Ladies are forewarned about the mode of travel and the itinerary, lots of sun, sea and sand. Also they should come in pairs for accomodation reasons.

Costs will be shared as before, with the owner/driver/s exempt from fuel charges plus a full tank upon return. Everything else will be pro-rated.

Ciao for now

  1. Hi Mike and Alicia,
Good to know you are interested. Do you drive? And have a car? We are trying to travel up in 2 cars in case of any breakdowns, not that we expect it.
    Please let us know. Thanks
    Annie and Mary,
Hi also, good to know you are interested, especially a seasoned traveller like Annie.

You guys must have another round of kampong stay … see if you get to stay at the kampong head’s home this time…thought it was quite interesting. Don’t forget your sunblock, ladies. Have fun…

  5. Hi Alicia,

“driving licence has been under utilised since 1980”
    – Huh! who would dare to sit in your car…are you kidding?

“Datuk” Lim TS can sell very well. Touch wood, don’t die hor, you will enjoy more if you expect less.

OK, can start appointing your drivers, accountant and tea-ladies – team work concept.

    Cheers

  6. Hi to everybody especially those who registered their interests in this trip.
I have checked and just realised that our trip will be made in the fasting month. In fact fasting starts 1st Sept and ends on 30th Sept. Hari Raya Puasa is on 1st Oct.
Trengganu abd Kelantan generally ‘shuts down’ during the fasting month. Consequently we will not be able to look for food during the days we are there. Boats are also difficult to find. Also it will be difficult to get Chinese food the further north you go from Kuantan.
Therefore we have decided to cancel or postpone this trip to the next year. The reason being that even if we go after Oct 1st, we may run the risk of an early monsoon this year. Trust me, the rainy season is not the time to go there. It rains every day, and very heavily too and the winds are extremely strong. You cannot swim, fish, or do any water activities. If you are unlucky, the floods will cut off the road access and you will be stuck for weeks possibly. Basement car parks will be flooded and damage to your car will be extreme. I am not sure if flood damaged cars are covered under our insurance policies.
We had overlooked this year’s earlier fasting month and I apologise for it.
The good news is that the east coast will still be there early next year and we can go anytime after Feb. 09.
We look forward to other trips where we can enjoy both the weather and the company, not forgetting the food, the hospitality and the novelty.
Apologies again and cheers till then.

  7. Hi Charles

Next time do your homework and check out the weather reports and seasonal trends like fasting month first before proposing any travel programme. I recall you just spoke about it last Sat. at Terence’s tent and cookout when we were both so enthusiastic on the trip. Now you’re telling us all the bad news to go at this time. It’s such a bucket of cold water to kill joy. Any other travel plan soon in lieu of this postponement?

    Chin Boon

  8. Hi Charles

Thanks for the ASAP updates. All ready to submit my leave application form first time in the morning, haha.

Hopefully if it is postphoned to after Feb09, we will be
able to join. My ‘no time to scratch hair’ months are
late Mar and early Apr, FY closing. But then die die still want to go.

Ivy #7 – No kidding, my driving license has been on DISPLAY MODE since the late 1980s.

    Cheers
    Alicia and Mike

  9. Hi All

Please don’t blame Charles. I am the one who set the date. I thought September is the last month to travel up east coast but I have not attended mosque and my muslim friend always invite me for Hari Raya meal in November.

Anyway, there is always another trip.

  10. Charles/LTS..
I am sori after telling you its fasting mth, yr this trip is cancelled…so kesian :(
but its a blessing in disguise that we met ( Charles?)at gathering yesterday…if not all of you will have to puasa in yr trip!…tak boleh tahan hor?

    ChinBoon@9…jangan marah..u shud know better rite?…thot u got malay girlfren?..haha

  11. Hi Norlinda @ 12,
You don’t have to apologise for telling me Sept is the fasting month. In fact it was I that asked you. Like you said,it’s a blessing that we found out sooner rather than later and join in a ‘fasting’ holiday, if ever there was one.
Don’t worry about Chin Boon’s comments. He is just showing his usual ‘bossy’ characteristic. Some people cannot get rid of it even after they have retired, so they go around ‘issuing orders’, telling you to do things as if they were still in office and that everyone is subordinate to them. They just have to take time to learn.
BTW on another matter, if you are giving classes on conversational Malay, please include me. I am interested.
Nice to have met you. Very refreshing, if you get the drift.
