Looking for traveling companions….

Hi,

I’m Mike Ong and I’m in my late 50s’. I’m looking for male traveling companions to see the world e.g. Central America, Mexico, Central Asia. Africa, Greenland etc.  Mode of travel can either be ‘free & easy’ or based on ‘package tours’. Having just retired from my own company, I can go anywhere, anytime and for any duration.

My email address is: butauweng@yahoo.com.sg

Please contact me if you are keen. I will gladly meet up for any further discussion.

With warmest regards

  1. Hi Mike Ong

Wah, you ARE lucky -can go anywhere, anytime and for ANY
    duration!

My friend(s) and I normally go on packaged tours tho we prefer ‘free n easy’ but none of us has the time to plan our own itinerary.

My point is if you don’t mind us (a friend and me)tagging along to the places you mentioned, please let me know. Tho I cannot travel anytime, I do try to fit in a holiday in April-May and Sept -Oct.

    Will e-mail you.

    Cheers,
    Jassmine

Guess you’ll have to pack shirts and pants instead of dresses in your luggage :)

  3. Hi Mike,
Welcome to SHC hope to know you better.
Am looking more towards Europe, UK as I have not been there.
Like to travel free and easy, visiting ‘globalfreeloaders’ friends along the way etc. Time period should be end of year or early next year. About your age. What are your hobbies, interests by the way, any profile y
et? Cu at the next event? email me at bswi@yahoo.com Cheers

  4. Hi Mike Ong

Love to travel too but mostly with family members. Most of time on “free & easy”. If u don’t mind Jasmine and friends and myself tagging along, please let me know. Greenland – that the place I would like to go.

    Will email u separately.

    Hi Jasmine

Won’t mind doing the “research etc” if you are game for “F & E”
    travel.

  5. Hi MaryC,

Yes, and we have amended the name to reflect registered name. As a guide, all names are checked, and only registered members are allowed to have comments.

And, Tong Hong, do introduce yourself on this website.

    Terence Seah

  6. wow mary, in a club of hundreds over members, you actually know who is in and who is not.

i am not active here and probably can’t, but want to show my participation.

for sure i am past 50 years old but not in many activities in singapore. I am usually in Myanmar, Yunnan, China and Thailand.

what else besides my pin number you need to know?
    feztus

  7. Feztus aka Tong Hong
It’s not often that we get unusual names like ‘feztus’ here lor. You must be a fan of ‘Gunsmoke’ where I believe, there was a ‘festus’. I used to watch that show and can remember that name.
Wah, you really want to give me your pin number meh? Hahaha.
    Anyway, nice to know you.

  8. Hi Mike.

Are u looking strictly for male travel companions only? Would u consider ladies too?

I would like to join in your travel adventures. I would like to see the world, before i leave this good earth.

This is a good thread to start a travel club. All those keen on travelling, register your interest here.

    Regards, Lydia.

  9. Mike, and all travel-lovers, please count me in. I am registering my interest. Thanks much.

Terence – how do I post my profile? Please give me a step by step guide. Thanks much.

  10. Hi,
Anyone interested in going to Wales, then Lake District, UK? Then on to Belgium by Eurostar chunnel train , see Bruges a picturesque canal-city, Ghent a mediaval city with quaint houses, finally back to London. In May. If you are into horticulture, there is the Chelsea flower show (very expensive ticket cost)

I like to be part of club too. Keep me posted.

  11. Hi Mike,

Wow,sure you have created a BUZZ and travel bugs started biting everyone here. Please count me in and keep us informed of any coming travelling plan.

Are you coming to the 18 Nov monthly event? I am sure all of us hope to meet you.

    Take care,
    Lilian

  12. hi people, since i am in yunnan alot, allow me to say, i can organise travel here.
i suggest what i call “health rejuvenation trip”… eating no pestisite and chemical fertilizers veges for 3 days, hotspring for one day, walking and trekking into villages and old cities the rest of the time.. if the season is right we can even pick mushrooms etc.,

with regards to dates, better to be after winter like february or march onwards unless you are fit and good with cold weather and if you can get airtickets. december is hard to get tickets to yunnan.

let me know or email me.

  13. Hi Feztus

    Re yr #15.
Why don’t you just organize a trip just after CNY. Let us know dates, what accomodation, how much and brief itinerary. I’ll join you.

  14. Hi Feztus

This is an interesting trip. If it’s scheduled for April, I’ll most probably be able to join.

I’ve been to parts of Yunnan but on a packaged tour. I like that Kunmin is only about three hours away and the flight I took was very smooth.

Ok, looking forward to information on this ‘healthy’ tour.

    Cheers,

  15. well kakis,(tian soo and annie loh) i don’t know if there are protocol here for organising trips… in the meantime, i shall highlight an usual 10 days trip, tentatively 17 to 26 feb 2009. it can be further customised.

since we are folks that “all the time in the world”, it is best to avoid the festive seasons etc… in china, CNY season sees millions moving around, going back and forth. prices of things goes up.

also i need critical number of at about 14 paxs, minimum 10.

and for jasmine teo, if the response is overwhelming, we can always have another group going in april. anyway singaporeans don’t need visa to go china if the trip is less than 14 days.

and for the comfort of some of our hosts whose outfits have pretty conservative workers in yunnan and for the comfort of some kakis going, i need to say that it will be a No smoking, No swearing, No alcohols and maybe No nonsense trip. ha ha… Karaoke is fine.

So, tell me what to do next. email me if you have other questions you need to ask, and indicate your interests etc.

  16. Hi Feztus

YOU decide on the date, itinerary, cost, than post it to ask for participents and fixed a dateline for payment.

If you get 14 paid participants by the dateline go ahead, if not cancel the trip. Simple.

After you cancel the trip there is always people like me who don’t need 10,000 companions to go for a tour. I can follow you on your private trip if you don’t mine the company. As lone as you are going to rustic places to see real people I’m game.

  17. Hi Feztus

If you are available in April to lead us on the rejuvenation trip you mentioned, let me know. I’ll try to get a small group (fewer than 10) of interested pple to go. Duration will be 6-8 days. Nowadays I look forward to special interest, small-group tours/trips.

Thanks for introducing the rejuvenation trip in Yunnan. My e-mail: kdaae2005@hotmail.com

    Cheers

  18. Hi Feztus!
If you do take up Tian Soo’s suggestion, please start a new thread (create a NEW POST). This thread was started by Mike Ong looking for travel companions. He created quite a stir! But so far, he did not add further comments.
I do not foresee that u will have trouble getting 10-14 ppl to sign up. Please keep me in the loop! Any chance of arranging a trip end Nov? I am feeling quite restless right now and do not wish to wait till Feb/March next year.

Hi All travel lovers! Please indicate your interest if you can travel end Nov to Yunnan.

  19. Hi Mike, Lim TH, Feztus and Lim T S,

I have managed to start my season’s holidays now, so am ready to go anywhere that I have not been either in a small group or even may make the trip alone.

Lim TH, your Yunnan work and travel propostion sounds good so I would like to know how does it work.

By the way, anyone wanting to travel to UK or Europe either backpacking or free and easy can discuss your plans with me.
I am planning to visit my sister and her children near London, so if you are easy going you bunk with me.

For the next few days anoyone wanting a short trip to Malacca, KL, Genting,Penang, for sightseeing, golf, shopping etc, can get call me or email me at bswi@yahoo , 91519301.

For the record I have decided to retire again and do something that allows me more freedowm to travel, discover new freelance work, taking care of holidays homes for others, basking or whatver if it helps to pay for the travel, lodging and food. May even try to find a way to stay cheap in Spain/Portugal and learn the Spanish guitar or painting, etc while I can.

So anyone with good ideas, suggestion or recommendations are welcome.

    Cheers

  20. Hi RonW
Congratulations on your 2nd retirement and on joining the ranks of the footloose and fancy-free.

Wow! Your second wind is really strong! Is there a possibility of your teaming up with Mike Ong (mana dia?)in April for a tour of Greenland? And if you don’t mind female company, at least two ladies are keen to tag along.

Painting is a good past-time to cultivate. You might want to go on a painting trip (to paint Angkor Wat for e.g.). The dreamers/romantics would be interested to join this trip – to gaze at the pool/moat and to watch Angkor Wat turn golden at sunset … take up painting if you have the inclination to paint.

Ok, do hope you consider Greenland. Happy retirement.

    cheers,

  21. Hi Ronald Wie,

Yes, its the holidays seasons again, and may I just say that should you want to visit Spain/Portugal, yes, highly recommended. The beautiful coastal towns are just round the whole island of Spain, with magnificent views of all thie costas, rositas, the people generally are friendly and shopping is affordable, even in towns in Madrid and Barcelona. And you can just hopped to nearby Lisboa/Portugal for your next stop. Highly recommended, and most of the folks there are very warm and friendly. cheers.

  22. Hi Jasmine, Celia, Mike and all

Yes be good if I can travel whever I want, but right now the plan is to find friends/people I can get to know along the way. So I will have to write to those people that I have come to know and also to make new friends from GlobalFreeLoaders, etc, if I am going alone.

So I welcome anyone who has any travel plans to anywhere that I have not been, as long as it is on a good budget.

Thanks Celia, about Spain/Portugal, I have always fascinated the culture and music from there. But now I am wondering if this is right time to be going there or better to head down under or to NZ now that the Aus/NZ dollars are much cheaper and weather is not that warm yet. Perhaps it will be a good time to go to Perth and stay with Mary for a couple days then do a ride and camping trip around that region, anyone keen??

    Cheers

  23. Hi Mike, Feztus and others,

One of my passions is travelling and I like to travel with friends in small groups or F&E type. Do not have the guts to travel alone but will bring another friend and join a travel agent’s conducted tour. Please keep me in view and drop me a line if you don’t mind my tagging along. Cheers.

  24. Hi Jasmine & others,

Looks like Mike Ong has either lost his pin no or he has no access to internet.

It’s Nov now!3 weeks ago and haven answered since he put the post!

I’m also interested to go on tours wif U all but only during school holidays.

  25. sorry mike, didn’t mean to hijack your post, directing folks elsewhere.
I think jac has already put up the post and we will continue from there.
any more inquiries please email me at ethniceast@gmail.com

finally just to say that I travel mainly to China, Thailand and Myanmar (formerly Burma) for all kinds of reason. I was involved in Thailand projects for 7 years and have practically cover most of thailand from the actual location called “Golden Triangle” in Northern Thailand to the Refugees Camp at the western Border of Mae Sot up to the Long Neck Tribe Camp at Mae Hong Son and even the refugee camp at Trat near Vietnam Border, of course not to mention the nice “girly boys places” like Pattaya, Rayong and Hua Hin etc. But i am tired of it. Prefers to go to China and Burma now. Have fun.

  26. Hi Mike,
Did some traveling myself. Driving driving tru the Rockies and from Montreal to Nigara Fall. But mostly driving around Malaysia. Do let me know if you plan something.

  27. Hi Feztus, jasmine, Ronald, Lydia and others,

Rockies, Niagara Falls are really great! I went to Niagara in winter and it was quite an experience. Got fed up with wearing so many layers so decided to take off everything except t-shirt and jeans.

Lake district: good to drive around on your own. Cold but beautiful.

I love F&E too. Count me in in your trips.

For now, anyone keen to travel by rail up to Bangkok in December? I thought one of the things I’ll like to do is a rail trip up North. We can stop at KL, Butterworth and then Bangkok. My email: lersl@yahoo.com

    Cheerios!

  28. Hi Vivien @# 34

Agree. Niagara Falls and the Canadian Rockies are awesome sights. Don’t mind going that way again. You went in winter – was the water flowing? You stripped to your last layer and didn’t become an icicle- how come?

Are you (and anybody else in SHC) keen to see the ice sculptures in Harbin? A friend and I are hoping to go there after the CNY, around 22nd Jan, most probably with Chan Bros. Hmmm…will write to your e-mail add. and ask for your secret of keeping warm. lol.

    Cheers,

  29. Hi Vivien, Jassmine, Ronald, Lydia and all others,

Have been reading this post now and then, and yes, I have always love winter, and please keep me in the loop if you ladies are planning somewhere cold to go in your future plans. I am at celia.wong@hotmail.com Many thanks, and cheers.

  30. Hi Vivien, Celia and all,

Yes have been to Niagara Falls, Canadian Rockies so waiting to visit UK/Europe or NZ.
Check AirAsia for special offer to London return ticket for $800 inclusive of all taxes. Just received an email to start booking now for travel in Mar-Oct 2009. So start planning.
I should think there is quite to be a limited number of seats for promotional offers, so better hurry.

Those who are keen to go London can plan to go together and travel a few places but leave the return for individual options to stay longer.

    Cheers

  31. Hi everyone,
