  1. Hi Hew Lee,

Thank you for sharing with members some of the latest technologies. As members, we appreciate your taking time and making the effort to share your knowledge; in this particular case, Microsoft Windows 10.

Milliions of people around the world have switched to Windows 10. I don’t see Windows 10 as a white elephant. Whether there are plus’s or minus’s in Windows 10, as members, we like to express our appreciation for what you are doing. I hope that AndrewY was not being discouraging when he used the words “white elephant”.

You had said what I wanted to say too. Let’s look at technology objectively. It’s only if you have and don’t use, it will turn into a white elephant.

No matter if we are young or old, continuing to learn is a good way to keep our mind active. Just like our cellular phones, so many changes had taken place and never end. I always like their unique names adopted for the Android OS. Jellybean, Kit Kat and latest Lollipop.

  3. Terence & Yew Kwong, thanks for your encouragement. Windows from Microsoft is engaged now in the smartphone market.
To do this, Microsoft has to come up with a new Operating System (OS) that is workable with touch screen technology.

Microsoft still has a good share of their OS installed in office desktops, various brands of personal desktop & laptop computers.
    This started with Windows 8 & 8.1.
With strong die-hard fans of Windows 7, Microsoft realized they have to do something to meet both the future of touch screen technology and the user friendliness of the previous Windows 7.

With this, Microsoft has achieved it in the new Windows 10.
Come to the talk, Andrew, and I can share with you all the improved features of Windows 10 in terms of user friendliness and enhanced security features compatible with Apple OS and far exceed that of standard android smartphones which use an opened software.

Also, you can read the news on lifelong learning promoted by the Government in today’s Straits Time (06-03-2016) in Home section page A13.

  4. Hi Hew Lee

Today is my day to surf SHC site (once a week). I saw my name appear in your comment, then I remembered I have made a comment on this post. If my comment has made you feel a bit unhappy, I like to say sorry here. This is not my intention. I just want to express my great disappointment on Microsoft.

Once upon a time, Microsoft is the leader of the PC software in desktop (or laptop) platform. It is so successful that it overlooked the potential of mobile platform. Until it feel the pain at last, it quickly came out with the Windows 8.

I don’t like mobile equipment (except the old and not smart phone I am using now). My elder son gave me an iPad and I gave it to my younger son. My younger gave me a cheap smartphone instead and insisted I have to learn to use it. Then I put it at home and use it only with the Whatsapp app (I also don’t like this app). I haven’t spent a cent on the mobile equipment until Microsoft came out with the Windows 8.

I was so excited and spent a few hundred $ to buy a laptop with touch screen and installed with Windows 8.1 OS. But when I used it, I was greatly disappointed, and felt I have wasted the few hundred $. There was no new idea, but just combined 2 OS (one for desktop and one for mobile) together. The 2 OS are unrelated with different working environment and apps (even with the same name). If you are working in one of the environment and want to use the other, you have to leave the one you are working and go to the other one.

With this design, it doesn’t benefit the desktop platform. And worst, due to Microsoft want people to use the mobile platform, it cut out the most important feature of the Windows 7 (Hew Lee, you should know what is it, right?) (in Windows 10, this feature should be added back). In the mobile platform, I don’t see any leading idea come out but only the disadvantages such as more memory capacity, lower speed ….. etc, etc. Microsoft not a leader anymore but becomes the worse follower.

Windows 10 should be better than Windows 8, but with the same design philosophy, Microsoft will always be the follower.

Of course, I agree with what YK said, we should continue to learn. So if some one interest in Windows, they should attend the class, but sure it is not me. Thanks for your kindly invitation, Hew Lee. May be next topic.
