Going to Batam 7/8 Dec 2008

I am thinking of going to Batam on a 2D/1N holiday. Will only stay within the hotel compound. Just to breathe some fresh, maybe be naughty a bit and enjoy some beers or whiskies. Do nothing. Start early Sunday and return Monday late afternoon.

Anyone interested or any suggestions for hotels or bookings? I am 99% sure of going.

  1. I spent a long weekend in September at Batam View Hotel which is located at Nongsa, some distance from the main towns. That is the place you’d want to be if you want to hang around the hotel sipping your sundowners. It is way out in the boondocks and quite inconvenient to go to any of the towns like Batam Centre or Nagoya. The later being where you want to be if you want to be naughty. However, sorry I can’t join you on the trip as I just managed to came back from Bangkok via U-Tapao and have loads of work to catch up on.

  2. Hi Terence!

What a pity! I’d to attend my grand nephew’s wedding this wkend or else I would love to go. It’s school holidays now.
I thought you’re not in favour of going during peak season?

My colleagues jux came back. I’ll find more for you which hotels are good.

  3. Jeffrey,

I am taking your advice to check into Batam View. Am going to do nothing and just spend time on the beach. And be naughty.

Catch up with u in Bkk soon.

Catherine, yes I am usually not in favour of going during peak seasons, but along, ok lah.

  4. Hi Daniel,

Am so glad to hear from you. I guess you must be enjoying a new lifestyle in Johore. Really envy you. Miine is definitely in Thailand, despite what the protesters have done to the airports and country.

I have just booked a superior room, with a sea facing at Batam View, so I am going to enjoy myself in that resort, not going out.

When you have time, I am looking forward to visit you and see what you see in JB as a place to be. Am now listening to Plik-Kee-Noo, a thai song, CD given to me by a fellow SHCian. Have fun in JB.

  6. So glad, I had a peaceful and quiet two days at Batam View. Had a fruitful time consolidating myself and thoughts. Didn’t have a naughty night though. The place was full of families and couples. I love it, the time on the beach, swimming pool and the villa.

Now to tell a story. A short while ago, I was having lunch at the hotel cafe, there were twenty people there; and my focus shifted to a young couple two tables from mine. The guy went to get some food, and the lady sat alone and then she called the waitress, who was busy at the cashier. “Excuse me”, and then she kept quiet until the waitress turned up in front of her. When the waitress turned up, the lady said “I like to order a kueh lapis cake. How much is it?”. The waitress replied “I am not sure, but I shall check the price from the shop outside”. She came back later and said “The cake costs $26”.

I thought she was going to order the cake; but instead, she ask “Can you get me a small piece to try?”. The waitress replied, “Sorry, the shop does not have any cake to try.” But the lady was insistent, and ask the waitress to go to the shop and ask. Maybe the shop has a small piece to try. So, the waitress went to ask.

When the waitress came back, and again explained that the shop did not have any cake for tasting, the lady got angry and loudly responded “How can the hotel not have any cake for tasting, when it is selling cakes”.

It was at this time, the guy came back, cooled things down and carried on eating. She then told the waitress “In this case, I won’t order the cake then”.

The lady was a young pretty Singaporean, maybe 28 years old, well dressed in summer gear and obviously looked educated.

And to all SHCians, I like toencourage you to tell us about your holidays and observations, anytime. It’s always good to share.

  7. Hi Terence

Nice to hear that you are alone but not lonely. It is good occasionally to shut out the noise of the world.

Thanks for sharing the little observation of life with us. We have to be mindful not to behave like everyone must serve us just because we have the money.

Guess you will be making your way back soon. Have a pleasant trip.

  8. Hi Joy,

Actually, I was planning not to be alone. This Batam View is secluded. Maybe next time, I shall plan better. Haha. Don’t mean to sound sexist, but it’s good to be a guy. It’s always nice to come to a place like Batam View in two’s or four’s.

  9. Hi Terence

“Pretty and looking educated” doesn’t equal being cultured and well-mannered.

It is common for many Singaporeans to behave this way in many Asian cities/places. I just can’t stand their behaviour at shops, restaurants and even the small stalls that abound in markets at these places. I’m afraid I’ve grown to be cynical and critical of our Singaporean bad habits and manners when travelling overseas.

Which is why I try not to travel during school holidays or public holidays. And avoid the shopping centres and food courts while in Singapore during public holidays.

The recent campaign to clear up your table after eating at a food court is a farce! Just getting you to clear up is no sign or act of “graciousness”… while you get your worst manners at the elevators, MRT trains, toilets, public libraries, etc.

Now you know one reason why I prefer to go to Thailand… to escape from this “civilisation” and enjoy the culture of respect and genuine graciousness accorded to everyone especially senior citizens.

  10. Hi Kenneth, Terence,

I find this behaviour ‘trying things before I buy’ very interesting. Noticed some people ‘try everything but never buy’.

One strawberry farm in Perth is known to direct busloads of Singaporean tourists to the poorest quality fruits because they will eat heaps and never buy. The towkay of a orange orchard told me ‘Oh Singaporeans – come for free orange juice, eat oranges from the orchard tour but no buy’ I told him ‘not all Singaporeans like that, I buy from you’

How come you say it is common for many Sporeans to behave ‘this’ way.

  11. Hi Mary!

Sad to say, that there’re many young ones like that nowadays.

If a student failed the exams @ Uni, the lecturer will blame the JC trs and if the JC student didn’t do well, his JC trs will blame the Sec trs. And the story carry on from
    Pri to Kindergarten.
Worst of all if a child misbehave the father will blame the mother and the mother will blame the father’s mother.

Who should take the blame? The ugly S’porean!
So let’s not be the ugly S’porean ourselves & help correct the youngsters whenever necesssary and possible.

I’ve witness some S’porean tourists at tour grps. They topped their plates to the fullest with food. Worst of all, from the main course to dessert @ buffet.
What’s more is the children are running ard at restaurant as if it’s a playground!
