CNY Tim Sum lunch – Feb 2009

Each year, we try to go out for lunch during the Lunar New Year festive season.  I believe a Tim Sum lunch with Chinese tea would be great.  Last year, we held ours at the Fortunate restaurant in Tao Payoh.  After the lunch, the groups went out for further more private get-togethers.

I am a believer we should keep the cost down; so as a target, we should try to keep to last year’s cost.  This way, we can get more people to attend.  We should continue to have our bear hug when we meet one another.  Fortunate restaurant is fantastic.  Of course, we can have the lunch at the Red restaurant.  Can even be held in Chinatown.  It’s great on the mood and the season.  Oranges of the same size, eyes facing up, everybody in red, ladies with pony tails and guys in china slippers.  We could target 50 pax.

Would you like to be the Event Organiser?  Let’s bring in the new year.

  1. Terence,

I think you are refering to Red Star restaurant at Chin Swee road (behind OG dept store), right? That restaurant served superb cantonese Tim Sum and better still, their cost are reasonably cheap. This restaurant is very popular, you better book early to avoid disappointment! How does a china slippers look like huh ????

  2. Hi Ah Nee,

Yes, Yes, it is the Red Star restaurant. And the pair of China slippers are slip-ins, plastic beads and very colorful.

Looking for an EO to raise his/her hand ….

Red Star is not behind OG , ok !!!!!It is at Chin Swee Road itself and about 10-15min walk from OG chinatown.
(I stayed just opposite Red Star for more than 20yrs)

  8. Hi Terence, Hi Lin (#8). May I contribute a little idea for the CNY celebration? When I lived in the US, I missed our CNY very much. So, I decided to hold my own CNY party. Each year’s party was with a different THEME, but everyone attending must not come in all black or white (must “educate” these Westerners on our culture/etiquette). So, to give them an idea of what I meant, my very first CNY party was ALOHA – they all came in bright colors/garlands/flowers. One time CNY was close to FEB. 14th – VALENTINE’s DAY. Now, in the US this is celebrated in a big way. Naturally, my theme for that CNY was “RED & REDDER Valentine’s/Chinese New Year Party”. Yep, everyone came in all shades of REDS. A sight to behold! To commemorate, I served my Singapore Sling drinks and food with all shades of REDS too. Kilos of oranges, red grapes, carrots, tomatoes & red water melon (carved into shapes), red cabbage/beets salad, red capsicums as cups/sauce holders, Mexican red jalapenos etc. Ok, you got the idea. Oh, I even used my RED “Good Luck” character service sets of plates, spoons, cups & teapot to complement the whole set-up. And of course lots of RED Chinese lanterns & ang pows packets decked throughout the garden & home.
    Kong Xi Fa Chai!

  9. Haha, Florence, so you still havent seen enough red to want folks to also see red? The red ink is smudging & blemishing many companies’ bottomlines so much so that some companies are laying off their employees come 2 Jan 2009. And isnt a bloodbath a bath in red?

Red isnt blessed. The psychopath gets agitated easily by the color red. The bull charges at red. Generally, red is associated with rage. Even those with vengeance in mind wear red before committing suicide.

Black and white are actually good colors. In football, I cant think of a world-beater attired in red. Germany’s national color is white top matched with black shorts. The bishops. the mullahs wear white, not red. The All Blacks of New Zealand will look funny wearing red. Referees don the black, not red.

And perhaps, the most telling is our hair. They turn silver, white when we near the age of sage. So seeing red can never be the harginger of good luck.
