Back to Basics – Kelong@The Water Lodge, 1-2 May 2009

Hello fellow SHC member lets escape from the modern world and immerse ourself in tranquility, for a short fishing trip to The Water Lodge, a small and humble private kelong resort off a sleepy tiny island, Pulau Tunjuk. Located in the Riau Archipelago, between Pulau Batam and Pulau Bintan.

If you fancy a simple, basic and laid back getaway, without having the luxuries of a 5 star hotel, and escaping to a realm of total bliss and self rejuvenation, then The Water Lodge is the place for you.

And for fishing enthusiasts, bring along your fishing gear, reel or lines, here’s the place for your great fishing spot. Seafood and local delights, Teochew porridge, board games, play cards or mahjong until the wee hours of the morning, coffee, tea and water round the clock, Island hopping, Local village and kampong visits* (if time permits) can be arrange as well.

Remembered Terence di quite a stunt, able to sleep by the edge of the wooden planks during the last kelong trip in April 2008, we dare you to try.

The primary activity that most who visit The Water Lodge love to do, is simply to enjoy the freedom of doing nothing and chilling out, embracing the solitude and the sea breezes, catching a tan or reading a favorite book, away from the usual hustle & bustle city life that we have all gotten so accustomed to.

  5. Wow!…this thread is selling very fast, like keropok!
now i know why Dan & Kenneth ‘escape’ from Karimun..hhmmm

Alamak! saya tak boleh join cos..oredi got hot date!
btw…i dinno Terence also know how to sob! sob!…haha..kesian!

  6. Terence#15, we would love to have you on board, Sob Sob but since you an earlier engagement, well next time perhaps.

James#16, Kelong owners has mentioned in the web that “All guests must arrive and depart from The WaterLodge” togather, as a group. We are not able to cater split groups or different time slots within a group” Sorry this is not allowed. We welcome you and Susan on board.

Dan#17, Best swimming & snorkeling is from March to end of October. All Outdoor activities and sea sports are subjected to weather/sea conditions. I supposed snorkeling is allow if we follows the condition set.

Welcome our final teammates Lydia, Marg, Shirleen, Sekaran & Gengha on board.

  7. Hi Nor, don’t sell keropok…bring us some keropok & kachangs before we depart for our small & humble private kelong resort… hehe. Sob Sob, you can’t join us.

  8. Hi Kenneth, It’s a difficult decision, I can understand your position. The temptation is just great esp when fishing and seafood are sooo interesting, ya? It’s worth it and we welcome you on board as team-mates.

  9. Hi Boon Liang

Me want to go. In fact, have been looking forward to such a trip. Got my dates mixed up hence did not register earlier. Even with Kenneth going, can i still go?

  10. Hi EOs,

Please be informed that I have transferred $360 into Janet Chan’s A/C for our kelong@Waterlodge Resort trip today. The transaction Reference Number is 21317925942412. TQ

    Sekaran and Gengha Dhevi

  11. Hi Boon Liang, JanetC and YK,

This fishing event is definitely very successful, even though the May Day holidays are still a few moons away. Perhaps, fishing is the attraction; but then I also think that you have been able to bring together the SHC friendship. I encourage you to give tips to other Event Organisers on how to make their events successful. Well done.

    Terence Seah

  12. Hi Boon Liang

I would like to join you guys, but seems alittle too late to register since it’s closed. :( Can you put me on wait list? DaisyY, you want to come too ? Kesian, if no room, then we need to sleep on the sampan huh?

  13. Dear EO Boon Liang,

Yes it certainly looks like your kelong trip is a real success. Even with May day at least 2 months away, registration is already full. My friends who are going, have asked me why I am not coming along, sigh, looks like the answer is pretty clear now. I had contemplated registering nearer the date but alas too late! haha.

Suzhang – there goes our mj table….unless our EO can open up for a few more? hehe

  14. Hi Boon Liang

Too bad lei, just came back from Indonesia this morning and your trip alreay full liao.

Can you put me on standby list just in case anyone want to back out?

    Thanks

    Sockie

  15. Dear CatY,

Me too.. When BL told me about this kelong on Sat. I was thinking over the weekend whether to go or not becos I have another trip in mind. Wow, didn’t know it was selling like hotcake. Yeap, let’s wait & see if there’s a miracle…he.he.. so you want to be on wait list like me ?

  16. Wow, Boon Liang is ignoring me. Did not make it to the “On Wanted List”(?) although I’m the first to ask to be on it at #26. No wonder Suzhang is kesianing me. Sleep on sampan also no chance.

  17. Hi Boon Liang

Poor thing you put the 3 ladies on “Wanted” list instead of “Waiting” list. They wanted by who?? Don’t gabra lah ha..ha. To those successful holiday makers enjoy yr trip

    Rgds
    Hamidah

  18. Hi Daisy,
Definitely and surely you are on the waiting list. Must be one of co-EO at work to categories the WANTED list but it’s sound nice coz
We WANT you and anyone to be on board if the kelong owner allow us to extend it to 35pax..still pending their response.

Once on board, we shall all be part of the crew or team-mates going back to basics doing the things we do during the kampong days.

Daisy, Suzhang, Cat Yeo, Sockie…X your finger but I can’t promise miracle!!

I may not be able to access to internet till next Monday but will try to response whenever I can.

  19. Thank you, Boon Liang and sorry for the trouble.

Didn’t used to live in a kampong nor in a villa but had drawn water from a well for my bath, swam in a stream (well, stream was small and so was I) plucked rambutans and papayas from the trees. So, I suppose I’ve done some kampong basics too!

Hope to be on board and to meeting with you.

    Daisy

  20. helo Ah Liang@24

Aiyo,if im gonna bring keropok & waive u all goodbye..i will lagi very sad sad..lagi sob sob seeing everyone gg away & left me behind at the shore!..apa macam..susah lah..haha

  21. Hi SHCians,

I see the names of 30 SHCians already preparing to hang loose on Labour Day’s PH on a nearby resort while lots of others like myself are also happy to stay home to spend time with families and friends.

Every year on May 1st since 4 years ago, I have given my time to be at St Joseph’s Home in Jurong ( Organised by my Alma Mater) to assist the Home with the Day’s lunch (sponsored) and feeding the elders who need assistance.

    Why this date?
May 1st is a PH and most of the Home’s staff would take a Day Off and the Home would be short handed so our School’s Alumni members would chip in.

Based on last year’s experience, The food catered for was for 100 heads including some of the helpers and Nuns.
Nelly and I, (both are SHCians) will participate again if we are able to.

I am sharing this opportunity to spend some time with our seniors who have (of course we can’t help all at the same time), in their younger days or used their prime time,
doing their bit to give us what Singapore has achieved
    today.

This Home has a varied population of residents. Some are able to help themselves while others are less able to do so.
It is a very well kept Home.

If any of our SHCians would like to come along let me know.
Then I shall liaise with our Alumni members and ask what kind of help The Home needs for this year. We have less than 2 months to talk about this and if we choose to do this, we must finalise/close this preparation 2 weeks (mid April) before 1st May 2009.

I am keeping my ears open for comments. Please speak up.

Oh BTW Dolly, do I need to inform you or the SHCs’ Admin for approval before I put this post up? Sorry if I have erred here.

    Geok Suan.

  22. Hi Geok Suan,
Glad that you shared with us on the help needed on May 1 at St Joseph’s Home.

I encourage u to put a post regarding this since both Nelly and you will helping out that day and I will assure that I will be the 1st to sign up as helper also… Cheers.. Dolly

  23. Hi Dolly,

Thanks for showing your interest in this St Joseph’s Home Project.

You are a great Leader who works by example and much like Terence too. May we have you there for a long, long time.

I have sent Nelly an e-mail asking her to check out more details with one of our Alumni Exco members.

Thank you for the immediate respons. I am impressed!

    Regards,

    Geok Suan.

  24. Dear Geok Suan

With regards to May 1st at St Joseph’s Home in Jurong to assist with the Day’s lunch and feeding the elders, as suggested by Dolly, you should put up a separate post on this topic so that interested parties can sign up for it without choking up someone else’s post. If you have any problem doing so, either Dolly or I can help. Just let us know. Meanwhile, please included me to help out on this day.

    Thks & Rgds / Lily

  25. Dear Geok Suan,
B4 your own post of St Joseph’s home project is published, you already got 2 helpers on ur list liao.. so quick2 put up a post as I m sure dat more helpers will definitely come forward lor..

Aiyo, no lah.. I cant b compared to Terence lah.. he is my example leh.. But rest assured, alot of them would not leave SHC so easily…

Like Lily had commented, any problem on post, do not hestitate to contact us, you noe where to get us rite??? Dolly :)

  26. Janet (aka Miss ATM…),

  27. Hi Liang Kor,

Thank goodness I’m not on the wanted list anymore and thank you for upgrading me to go kelong with you guys. :) I will do the transfer by this week.

Wish CatY can come onboard soon. Waiting for the next miracle to happen. :)p

  28. Whew Suzhang,

You have made it out of the ‘wanted’ list and I am now first in the queue. We will have to see whether we are destined to play mj together again, sitting at the square table and enjoying the sound of lapping waves and seabreeze. Yes miracles do happen and I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed…….hahaha

If I don’t make it out of the ‘wanted’ list, I will still see you at the square table at MAS?……Have great fun all the same, which I am sure you will!

  44. Hi,

Sorry for the hold up. Unfortunately, we have to withdraw our reservations (Diana Loo and James Kong) as I have to travel for work that week. Please release the space to those on waiting list.

    Thanks
    Diana

  45. Hi Diana/James #79, sigh….to read you guys have decided not to join us, been eagerly waiting for your reply on the pymt. Ok, since you have valid reason, Xcuse both of you this time hehe.
Perhaps someone would step up to be the next EO in the near future and surely all those who have missed this opportunity this time would continue to support the next Back to Basics,

  46. CatY, you are finally in, that’s great! Looking forward to having some fun with you gals at the kelong.

#78 – Sockie, you must learn how to fish big fish from Veronique, she is good friend of Baracuda….he.he…

  47. The organisers are a pleasant and friendly bumch who will be great company on the trip.

For the fishing enthusiasts I would recommend an alternate to kelong fishing as the catch will be sparse due to the fact that the river flow where the kelong is situated is to swift for the fish to settle in the kelong area.Suggest the anglers hire a boat to go out fishing or find alternative forms of entertainment like MJ,cards, karaokelistening to music(bring your own compo/radio set),party games
or shopping(limited).Organisers please feedback if my report is accurate. As an alternative for future trips I would recomeend ALLEY KELONG in Bintan for $150 to $180
where the fishing is better but the ferry /land trip is a total of 2 and a half hours. If you find the journey too far than Kukup will be a good alternative for future trips. If anybody wants to organise a trip to Alley Kelong let me know and I can put you in touch with them,I hope with my advisory SHC members are better prepared and plan ahead for a fun trip.
For those SHC members I have lost touch with please contact me as I have lost my handphone and all your contact numbers.
Personal Update : I have been M.I.A, recently keeping my position as top joint media tipster with 48 wins as of 13Mar 09 in the field of Singapore Horse Racing.I boldly gatecrashed the media challenge with emails to Singapore Turf Club Officials and all the media in Singapore. As a result of my success rate in comparison to the rest I have been offered to write 2 columns a week in a new English/Chinese dedicated horse racing publication that will come out approximately by mid-year.(who says racing does not pay?)…it helps with a good methodology and thorough preparation…”we take the gamble out of racing”.
On the travel agency side I will be joining a Wavelink/NTUC joint venture and open a Changi airport counter with a new brand name called A.C.T when the collaboration is finalised. Who knows you might find me either at NTUC counter at K.K. or at the airport counter.
As ARNIE said ” I’ll be back and see all the SHC guys and gals soon!

  48. Hi Sock Cheng

Referring to your comment in the SHC Monthly Gatherings.
Do remember 1 May is Kelong Day and it’s a Friday.
Serkali u go to ferry terminal on Saturday, we all already on the way back from Kelong. Ha ha ha…..

    Daisy

  49. Anyone drop out of this trip…………hey just trying my luck can or not! If anyone withdrawing, OE, I volunteer to take his/her place…..with full payments, of course! I do not believe in having a free lunch either. Thank you!!

  50. Hi Ivan,

Registration is already closed. However, if Kenneth is offering to “sell’ his place to you under mutual agreement, yes, you are most welcome to come on board.

Please make the necessary arrangements with Kenneth directly. Once this is done, fwd your particulars to me via email. I will be in touch with you.

    Hi Kenneth,
Thanks for your interest, now you have Ivan to replace you, you’ll be safe on land recuperating and rest well.

    We shall miss your company.
Take care and will catch up with after our kelong trip.

  51. Hi Boon Liang and Kenneth,

Have just email you guys on above with my personal particulars included too. Once confirmed by Kelong Owner that it is OK with this last hour change, please let me know via my private email. THANK YOU.

  52. Hey u guys!

We forgot a “Hip Hip Hooray” for our EOs Janet & Boon Liang!

We were always kept well informed of the trip from Boon Liang’s numerous sms and emails and he took care that many of our memorable activites are captured with his Canon (?).

Boy oh boy, were we well fed too by Janet who made sure we had second rounds of our favourite dishes which counted for almost every dish, ensuring we had our massages and taking care of our health concerns too.

Of course these were not all that Boon Liang and Janet did. I was just too busy enjoying myself that they just eluded me.

Thanks to all the kakis for a good time. It was good getting to know more people with whom I have yet to rub shoulders with. You too were great guys!

    Till we meet again!

    Daisy

  53. Hi

Thanks to Boon Liang and Janet for a great trip.

They took care of all the nitty gritties including last minute purchase of anti-swine masks, counting all the kampong chicken heads to make sure no one was left behind on the boat, on the island, at the pier, etc.

It is no easy task to plan and lead a big group to a foreign land (ya, including kelong not on land). So we really appreciate Boon Liang and Janet for doing this without benefit, payment or reward, but solely so that SHCians can come together and have fun while experiencing a new place.

    Joy

  54. Hi Guys

Glad all of u hd an enjoyable time n plenty of fun in the last 2 dys. Tho I missed this trip owing 2 some urgent personal matter 2 take care of, I always know that you are in the gd hands of Janet n Boon Liang.

Now just cant wait 2 look at the photos 2 see what I hd missed out.

    Janet n Boon Liang

Thanks 4 sharing my load of responsibility.

  55. Hi guys,

Yea, personally i feel that the WaterLodge Kelong is better than the one at Kukup. More authentic, and definately, more “back to basics” .. esp that wobbly jetty that we had to walk gingerly over, to get across to the village, incase one of the feet gets trapped into the moving logs.. one has to see it to imagine. Look out for the photos.. for those who missed it. It is a once in a lifetime experience, which i do not wish to repeat.

Getting so close to the dolphins was another “once in a lifetime” experience.

And of course, the food was yummiieee… compliments to the chef.

    Good work, EOs.

    Cheers, Lydia.

  56. Hi Janet, boon Liang and kelongers,

Looks like everybody enjoyed the kelong trip. But I did not read about any fishes being caught. Who caught the most beautiful fish? Or you got nothing, but just good food and friendly people.

    Terence Seah

  57. HI Terence,

Look out for the photos. I was holding a beautiful & extremely colourful hugh fish, still moving. As to who caught it, we will leave you guessing!

    Cheers, Lydia.

  58. Lydia #97,

Where are the pictures? Where are they located? It is not on the main post.

And Lina #98, if you are not in the kelong, how could you be playing mahjong?

    Terence Seah

  59. Ha! Ha! Terence you missed the fun.

Yes, I agree with Lydia, we will keep you in suspense as who caught the most beautiful fish. Keep guessing……………………..

Anyway, fishing at the Water Lodge was different from the Hotboys Kelong in Malaysia or Mandurah and Cervantes in Perth. Water is quite shallow at the Water Lodge kelong and fishes were caught using different technique but we managed to hook sotongs using conventional method.

Big thanks to Boon Liang, Janet Chan and Yew Kwong for leading us back to basic days. With your tedious preparations and consistent efforts pertaining to everyone’s welfare, the trip went on smoothly without any hiccups.

Everyone was enjoying themselves with any activities which suited them. Glad to join this group of kelongers comprising new and old Shcians who are nice and easy going especially when asked for donations for the local helpers, they were so spontaneous and generous.

    Cheers to all!
    Veronique

  60. Hi Terence,

The photos are not ready. Just hang on, it will be soon. Sockie & BL : how’s the progress on the photo editing?

    Cheers, Lydia.

  61. Hi Janet, Boon Liang and Yew Kwong

Just wanna to say thank you.I had a wonderful time and I am sure many of the SHC members too.

Simple, rustic with lots of water, greenery and woody environment.

Ahhh … Janet, such a gracious hostess taking care of us, attending to our little needs and Boon Liang serving us fruits and ensuring that we are cool (making sure that we get our electric wind when there is no sea breeze ha ha ha).

Yew Kwong, even though you were not there, for me you were in spirit, Thanks for been part of the organising team. It was due to the meticulous and careful planning of the EOs, everything went well.

Among the highlights was learning to play Rummykup, spending noisy moments with the kakis and having a leisure teochew muay breakfast with a group of wonderful ladies.

Thank you to all the kelongers for the wonderful time.

    Cheers
    Agnes

  62. Hey fellow Kelongers

I know all of you are very anxious to see the photos taken by the few of us.

I understand from Boon Liang that we should have close to (if not more than) 1,000 photos taken and it’s no small task getting all these sorted out. Have been burning a few mid night oil myself editing those taken by me alone…now orh bak kak liao …. hope I did not push up the oil prices kekekekekek

I guess Boon Liang would not mind if I were to give you folks a sneak preview of those taken by me….Oi Cheng sure kepala pusing having to upload so many LOL
