Here’s another dream for next year – a prom night

Some of us do know what is a prom night.  Maybe we dont have prom nights in Singapore.  Most of the time, we hear and see prom night movies from the US and UK.  Remember, Olivia Newton John in Grease?  Remember High School days, end of school term.  Did you come from a co-ed school or all boys or all girls school?  Now, nevermind, if you have not been to one.  So, let’s dream ahead for a new year event.

Well, if we are all over 45 years now, then the popularity of prom nights must be some 30 – 35 years ago.  Gee, wouldnt it be nice if we can have a prom night for SHCians?  I can just imagine the boys would be dressed in striped long sleeves with straps for the pants, in case they drop off.  The hair would be moosed, pointing towards the sky.  The girls would be wearing mini-skirts, 4 inches above the knee.  The hair would be pleated or maybe just pony-tailed.  And, glossy red lip sticks.

Hmm, the idea dreams only.  Ah Ha, entrance tickets would be sold.  Every end-of-term girl or boy would have to sell tickets.  Maybe to raise money for a new school gym.  And if prom nights are what they are supposed to be, the girls have to bring their partners; and the boys have to bring their own partners too.  In the movies, the girls will cry if they cannot find a date.  And, the boys will show off their new dates, if they cannot get the dates they have been wanting to go out with.  Really, cannot come alone.  Tickets are sold in pairs; one printed with a B and the other with a G.

Let me think what kind of songs.  Please help me and everyone to think.  San Francisco, "To sir with Love".  I guess a 70s theme would be exciting.  But, then the songs and music must be danceable.  Not all boys and girls can dance.  For fear of not dancing well or I just dont want to show you how good my dancing is.  Prom nights – a night of rock & roll; and also some waltz.  Guess, enough time for all of us to learn.  12 months to practise.

Food and drinks; I guess we can have plenty of fruit punches.  Still in school, so no alcohol.  Cigarettes, hmm; maybe in the bushes.  Teachers and principals are watching.  Food, aiyah, we may not want to dirty our dresses; so minimal.  But, I think a good dinner spread may also be a good idea.  Well, we have not have a venue in mind; but it could be in the school canteen.

Again, please take this dream in good light.  Yes, we may be SilverHairs, but we can all feel young too.  So, start looking for your date now.  I have no promises that this event will happen.  But if we are to go ahead with this dream, it is very likely I will announce the venue, date and ticket price after the coming D&D.

Look out for movies of prom nights.  And, please share your dreams of a prom night.  (Please do not email me or call me on this event).

I just love this; and I hope you do too.

  1. For next year’s Prom night, we have received many ideas and suggestions from members on how a Prom night will look like for us. However participation seems cool, and indications are that “coming in pairs” may be too restrictive.

As of now, we have someone who has offered to be the Event Organiser of this Prom Night. Let’s give her sometime to source for a place and think of the program.

  2. When our kids were young, as parents, we aspired with big dreams for them. Some even conspired with principals for a p;lace in big-name schools and in the result caused the kids to perspire without wanting it or knowing what the heck it was for.

Now at our age with our brains as good as yesteryear coconuts, even if our parents succeed on bribing us into Playhouse, many of us will still let them down with out results…….hide-n-seek, we can find the target due to poor eyesight. Play catching? Not when you cant go at it without a walking stick.

So, let us be real. In any sensne, we’re drop-outs and if there’s a High School willing to atke us, it has to be Dropout College where the priniciapl himswelf is the biggest dropout with huge agony stories of failure to tell with no prompting at the Prom Nite………….

    ??????”???????“? ???????????????????????“????”?????????????????

  3. Terence, if you like gila gila names then how about MAI TAK CHEK COLLEGE (Don’t want to study) or BUAY PASS COLLEGE (Cannot pass)?

    Cheers

  4. Hi Terence #38,
How about Kings & Queens College, Memory Lane College or maybe SHC Fun College. Just a thought, so let’s wait for more to come in. Rgds, Lisa

  5. Hi RosalindL #37,

The Silver Hairs College? Well, this is one name. Sound like we heading towards The Silver Hairs College Prom Night. Very unusual name. Ok, let’s keep this name, and see what else pops up. We should decide just a day after the Dinner and Dance.

  6. Terence, your love for outrageous activities for us never cease to give me heart palpitations. Hahahaha….

I do like your positive attitude and telling us to ‘Go ahead, do it!’ when we suggest ANY new events.

For this Prom Night Party of yours, I get giddy just trying to visualize the above 60s SHC-ians doing the rock-and-roll twirls, swings and bends at 140 mph! :p Our poor feet aren’t as nifty as they were when we were younger. Of course, there’ll be some members who have been keeping themselves very fit but still…such exuberant dancing!!!

As for the name of the college? Hmmm….. The first one that came to my mind is ‘Silver Hairs College’ as all of us identify ourselves as SHC-ians. :p

    Cheers

  7. HI Tian Soo and Steven NG / others ,

Tried , but there only have a Windows version of spam fighter.

Can any one of you tell me how I may get a Mac version for my Imac ?

Thanks and looking forward to your response.

  8. Thanks to Tian Soo and Steven NG for yr suggestion re: scam mails.

Tian Soo I will try using the spam fighter as recommended by you.

  9. Hi Terence #31

Totally agree cannot deny but some call it “Horse-tail” china translation and also not forgetting the “Deep Fried Fritters” with 2 ribbons at the bottom..hahaha

  10. Hi Terence

Oic so that’s what you call chicken backside ha..ha., ya if that is what you mean I agree. Wah you got good memory
I have 4 gotten abt that kind of tying hair.

I’m now having short hair, may I should do that chicken backside hairstyle for prompt nite hee..hee

  11. Hi Hamidah #30,

During our co-ed school days, if a girl has short hair and wants to tie up the hair at the back of the head, she will use a rubber band. The back will then look like a chicken backside.

This is one of the most attractive hairstyles around. I get excited over it.

    Anyone disagrees?

    Terence Seah

  12. Hi Terence #29

I’ve heard of pony tails & beehive hairstyles but never heard of “chicken backside” what kind of hairstyle is that & how does it look like??? To what I know chicken backside normally for making stocks or eating hee..hee

  13. Hi Lai Fong and those who are figuring out what hairstyle to spot for the Prom night.

I was just walking along Khao San Road in Bangkok, and I noticed a couple of stalls selling hair extenders and wigs. Well, there are the pony tails, the coconut tree, the chicken backside and the twin-tails styles. Get one if your hair is too modern.

    Terence Seah

  14. Hi All

This prom night is getting more and more exciting, lets “ROCK THE BOAT” and next you can hear “Where’s yours papa gone and where’s your mama gone”

    Cheers!

I have been using a FREE Spam programme from spamfighter.com for over 3 years. It is able to identify spam and move them to a separate folder.
So far it is about 98% accurate and I have not experience any negative effect from it that I know of.
Sorry Terence for use ot this thread. Thought this may be useful info. for some

  16. Hi Steven Chan,

There is no way to prevent spam mails as along you have sent a email or give your email address to a friend or posted your email address on a forum/blog or whatever. However you can minimize spam mails by not doing the above.:)

A few years ago an acquaintance passed me a trial subscription for an emails harvester or email spider. What the software does was – it will go to a website and retrieve all the email addresses or telephone numbers posted. Some of them even have the capacity to retrieve email addresses while it is in the process of being sent unless the message is encrypted. I have tried it for a few days and was amazed by its power. Unfortunately I am not in the business of spamming people or else I will have subscribed for the software. It is quite costly and it is a monthly subscription. I am sure by now the program will have improved by leap and bound and its power to harvest email addresses and telephone numbers will be tremendous.

The only way to stop email spam according to my knowledge is to subscribe to an authorization service where your emails from your friends or acquaintances will be deliver to your inbox only upon your authorization. It is a monthly subscription service. All emails will be re-directed to their server and once they match the list of authorized senders it will be release to your mailbox or else you will receive a message requesting your approval to add the sender to your list or otherwise.

You will notice as far as possible I try to list my email address without the @ format whenever I posted on a forum or blog such as stevenng at yahoo dot com. Unfortunately some moderators or webmasters do not understand the logic and have it amend to the standard format with the @ in between.

  17. Hi Steven NG @ 24,

My email box is full of SPAM mails. Even after indicating that there are spam mails , and then deleted . More SPAM mails will return with “vengeance”

Daily i received abt 20 or more SPAM mails. And it is a nuisance deleting them every time I open my inbox. MY inbox contains abt 245 emails unread. I am losing this battle of seiving thro my relevant mails.

Can you pls. advised how to STOP them completely from flooding my Inbox ?

Would changing my Username and Password a good move ??????

    pls. clarify. Thanks.

  18. Hi Lily at message #22,

Not to worry Lily. SHicans are intelligent, smart, and worldly-wise to fall for such a stupid trick. In fact I find that it is an insult if I received such a silly message.

    A look at the message:

    (1) Grammatical errors as mentioned by Lily.
    (2) The author is a very lazy gal/guy as he/she capitalised all the wordings. Maybe he/she does not go for proper training on typing. By the way capitalising all your words amount to SHOUTING in internet jargon.
    (3) SingTel is the top company on SGX in term of market capitalisation and their message will be properly formatted with correct wordings with proper grammar.
    (4) The webpage is poorly formatted – very amateurish and definitely cannot attribute to a top company like SingTel. By the way the page is hosted on free website and I don’t think SingTel is so poor that they cannot afford a commercial site.

I find that the standard of spoofings or scamings nowadays are very amateurish and just cannot find any reason to fall for such a trick.

  19. There are Prom nights for Year 11 (16 years old) and Year 13 (18 years old – the biggie).

It is a formal event meaning everyone including nerds and slops dress up formally. The girls obviously will be in their finery and guys in suit or tuxedo looking very handsome.

If a girl has a date, her date MUST bring her a corsage (wrist) and he will have a matching corsage on his lapel. He has to come to the girl’s house so the parents can see who the fook is the precious daughter’s date. When the matching corsage is in place, they will go off and some parents will have a curfew – whatever that means.

The venue will have to be a posh place, at least a ballroom. Yes, some teachers (sometimes the Principal) will be there to keep an eye. Ya, right……….they are busy dancing and having a good time. Shoot!

Now, senior high (16) do not have alcohol but the Six Formers (18) may have some at the event.

There will be a Prom Queen and King as the highlight of the Prom. They may not be the nicest people on earth but they are just so……….being popular, whatever.

I suppose your idea of the Prom night is to be 18 again. Awesome, as it is when we will move on to college/uni and never ever see those we really hated. Nice.

As we are in twenty ten, DJ will be hired to psych everyone up and if he/she sucks, these dressed up people will leave and partaay someplace else.

However, if it’s the 50’s, 60’s theme, we are still good, just have to make sure it’s really, really amazing so we can relive our sweet 18 again!!

    Noticed the grave grammatical error??

  21. Well, i’ve never been to a Prom Night. But would this theme would be suitable for us, since we’re already long past this age? And finding a partner (within SHC) to go to this Prom Night would be difficult for some? But if Terence can find a group of people willing to take on this task, we could always try it out.

Meanwhile, let’s enjoy the Freaky TGiF, D&D and an upcoming karaoke cum dance session?

    Cheers!

  22. Now, I am waiting for this “Prom Night” post to be hyjacked. StevenN, you are right, hackers are far too intelligent. I can be a hacker; no patience.

StevenC, I have not known you to be a music lover; but it is definitely nice to hear you sing. HenryY and StevenC, please keep us hyped up with your memories before prom night.

I think many of us have never been to a Prom night; as it may not have been the trend in Singapre. But for those with kids in overseas colleges, maybe you have experienced Prom nights. It’s great memories; so dream on.

    Terence Seah

  23. Sylvia, i too received an email purportedly from you, desperately seeking help from London. According to that “you”, someone naughtily removed yr pyjamas when you were dreaming……..dreaming of letting us hv a preview of what yr pyjamas nite dress will be. So “you” only had yr puma shoes on but cant leave home without pyjamas which, interestingly as I was to believe, was all you brought for your London trip.

Reading you here has assured me that you are not in London or at the World Cup but safely in Spore crying foul over some hackers.

If pranksters can have the time and space to spray paint a train where security was supposed to be very tight, any one of us may be spread-eagle and painted all over if we are not careful. This world can only get more unsafe.

  24. Hi Sylvia Ang & Terence at message #15 & 16,

This is not hacking at all but spoofing. You need a certain intelligence and experiences to be a hacker. This is a spoof email claiming to be from a legitimate organization and requesting you to pass your personal information to them. It was a common trick used by fraudsters a few years back and were extensively reported in the mass media and internet forums. I am surprised that there are still people who fall for these primitive tricks despite all the media coverage.

My apology if my above remarks may be offensive to some people but we need to bear in mind that we are in are final stage of our life and should be responsible to ourselves and other people by keeping abreast of current affairs which affect our daily life.

In fact there is one fundamental rule – never pass any personal information to anyone on the internet especially your password. This is equivalent to your key to the house. No banks or any organizations that are reputable will ever ask for your passwords. If they ever ask, you know they are FRAUDSTERS who are trying to gain entry to your ‘house’ and commit actions or behaviours that are detrimental to you or people around you.

My apology again if my comments are offensive to anyone.

  25. Hi Sylvia #15 and all email users,

Unfortunately, Sylvia gave away her password to someone who seemed genuine enough to ask. Well, learn from Sylva.

And if you ever wish to give away any personal details, you can give me your ATM card and the PIN number. You can be sure I wont use your ATM card to send out emails.

    Terence Seah

  26. hi Terence, sorry I am using this post to write. A hacker claimed to be from gmail asking for my password and my gmail will be shut down. need a vertification reply. The hacker have changed my password from my gmail and started sending mails to all my friends claiming I am in london attending a seminar and asking for money. For those of SHC if you received such an email pls ignore. my apologise. I need to change my gmail account.

    Sylvia

  27. Hi Terence

    Ooh-la-la……great idea!

Makes me feel young again…. albeit have to look for a date (if I can find one…) kekeke.

………Guess mine is not the first heart broken,
my eyes are not the first to cry I’m not the first to know,
there’s just no gettin’ over you ……I’m hopelessly devoted to you
But now there’s nowhere to hide, since you pushed my love aside I’m not in my head, I am hopelessly devoted to youuuuuuu.

  30. I was about to get on this TG flight from Bkk to Singapore; only to realise that there was a soft announcement going on. Well, there is going to be a 1.5 hour delay. Guess what, the airline needs to get a spare part.

So, the dream goes on. In case, you have already found a date for our Prom night, you may want to help your schoolmate get a date. Try getting a blind date for your closest of friends. The thing about blind dates is you should not tell your friend who the date is. That’s blind date.

So guys and gals, keep fit. Join the walking team. Join the cycling team. Feel good and look good. Get into your ideal weight. It’s always nice to look good and feel young. It’s possible.

    Terence Seah

  31. ……..sandy my darling, U hurt me real bad,

  32. Hi HenryY #7,

Sounds like the movie. Can you be John Travolta? If yes, find your Olivia N John. We may have a role for you. Frankie, my darling ….

    Terence Seah

  33. …stranded in the drive-in.
    …branded a fool!….what will they say…. Monday at school…..
    …..oh sandy…baby..when high school is done…we’ve made a start, now we’re apart….

    Getting into the groove hehehe

  34. Hi DanielO,

I have not fixed the date for this month’s montholy gathering, but if there is an oppor;tunity, I guess you can run through a few steps on waltz. I am game. Got to find other avenues too.

Caroline, this idea is still a dream. But, first keep your flared mini-skirts, dont throw them away. I am sure we can make this part of the dream come true, faster than what most may think.

Rosalind, I wont make you the EO, but I was thinking you can think of the name for our college. We all belong to this college, and it’s time for graduation. Something fresh and young.

Hi Catherine, oh boy, I just love that flower corsage on the wrist. Hairs, also ok. Tuxedos, good if anyone can still find it in the closet. By the way, where is Orinda? Happy Birthday.

Francis, everybody should keep their date a secret. I wont ask for the “date” to be registered. Only the buyer of the two tickets. So, you still can change your mind last minute.

All boys and girls of your college, please start finding your date now. And, keep it a secret until the night of the event. Tickets are sold in pairs; and no same sex pairs please.

Let’s your ideas roam. Date will be announced after the coming D&D. And, as always, help me to look for a place. Must be as big as a few badminton courts, plus a few sneaky corners for that quiet intimate chat.

    Dream on.

    Terence Seah

  35. Hi Terence,

Greetings from Orinda, California! Just want to put in my 2 cts worth when I saw your post as I have just experienced a prom night in my two weeks here.

My nephew has just finished with his prom night at his high school and it was supposed to be ‘the event’ of their academic years culminating in this very special night where they get dressed up in black tuxedos, bowties, leather-shoes and not forgetting that ‘date’ with a flower corsage on her wrist. Some even go to the extent of fetching their ‘dates’in a stretch limousine! Yup its an all important night and no expenses spared in decking out in your finery.

Wouldn’t it be interesting for all the post baby boomers to re-enact a prom night like this? Haha what an idea, you do come up with fun and interesting ones from time to time. Boy I can’t wait for your idea to come into fruition.

I will be leaving in a few days time for my cruise to Alaska in Seattle. Before I sign off, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the SHC members
(you know who you are) who texted me with birthday messages – Thanks pals for your sweet gesture and I will see you when I get home!

Cheers and the weather here is so nice and cool!

  36. Hi Terence

Thanks for coming out with another very brilliant idea

I came to know about “Prom Nite” through novels and movies.

I never had a chance to participate in “Prom Nite”.

I would join with my date. As you had mentioned, “the boys will show off their new dates, if they cannot get the dates they have been wanting to go out with.”, if my date does not want to go with me, I will try to find new date, ha ha

    Francis

  37. hi terence

i am an amateur waltz enthusiast and will be glad to share the ballrom basic waltz routines with those couples who wish to pick up the waltz steps for the prom night… with 12 months practice they can waltz to their hearts desire…

  38. Dear Terence

This theme is what I have been waiting for for a long long time.
Music by Sha Na Na is so good for dancing and their slow numbers are so good to waltz with if you are with someone special. I remember watching Back To The Future starring Michael J Fox. They had this prom nite (correct me if I am wrong) and they had this live band.

So looking forward to this event.

    Cheers
    Carly

  39. It’s an excellent idea, Terence. BUT, please do not appoint me as EO for next year’s D & D! For themed events, there must be a committee. I don’t mind helping out but to take charge of such a mammoth event, the best person is still….you. :p

    Cheers
    Ros
