  1. Well this is a good opportunity to see whether we can have next year D&D on a Cruise ship. We shall recce and provide feedback to our member.

You may also call it a Retreat for the Club where we can sit down and see where the direction for the Club will be. It will be a time to set the events and activities for next year. All member are welcome to attend and provides suggestion and ideas as to what kind of activities should be implemented and potential EOs to carry it out.

    My 7 cents worth!

    Dan

  2. Hi Dan ,
This sure is a great idea for the next D N Dance. My
Compliments for having this great idea . Keep up the good work . I have 3 last minutes coming in to join us . Will keep you inform .

  3. Hi Danz,

Support you to organize a D n D on board a cruise liner
for a change. Six meals + accomodation, really worth it.
We can integrate some activities (say Family Day) in the day too.

    However, some thoughts to ponder:

    1) Is there any exclusitivity to use the room/equiptment
    facilities for SHC only?

    2) Any min. no of ppl to enjoy exlusive use?

  4. Hi James,

Noted your queries, I should be able to reply after our trip. We are in touch with a key person from this company and hope to get some positive result.

Those of you who yet to pay up, please to so by September 4, 2010 and not forgetting you passport detail. Otherwise we will set sail without you.

    Dan

  5. Looking at the itinerary, the first day from 12.00 lunch until about 6 to 7 pm it is eating throughout. Don’t want to be fat also cannot. Luckily during the last few months I lose about 5 kgs maybe I can regain back my weight loss.

By the way I check the schedule at asiacruise and LongJie is expected to arrive at Harbour Front Centre on Sunday at 10 pm and maybe we can disembark about 10.30 pm.

I wonder if we can have the option to return back early by taking the last ferry at 5.15 pm in case we do not want to stay so late.

  6. Hey Dan

A Silver Hairs Retreat or on a grander scale, an SHC Congress where you can have breakout groups brainstorming on activities and directions for the club. This way, all attendees can participate in their assigned work groups and their ideas presented to everyone later for consensus.

  7. Hi Dan, I have tried sending my particulars to Joy and am wondering if she has received them? No acknowledgement so far.

Will I be left standing at Harbourfront waving goodbye to you all? hahaha.

My email: geoksuanlim@yahoo.com I just need her or you to send a Hi email to me and I can press reply to send the required Passport info to her.

    Thanks Dan.

    Geok Suan.

  8. Hiya Dan

I would like to join “Cruise to Nowhere – Sep 18/19”
How much do I have to pay for single accomdation or double accomdation if there is a possibility.?
    Thanks, Best Regards, Kuan

  9. Hi Steven Ng,

Noted your request, let me check it out.

Geok Suan, I will get Joy to acknowledge you.

Kuan, it $88.00 nett for two to a room. Do hope you can join us.

    Dan

  10. Lydia, finding a mate shd be the least of worries. The AsianCruise people come in all shapes and sizes, in a fit-all physique.

So, whether it’s ??? or ?? king kong, you’ll find them all there. And if you prefer the skinny gangly type, Mr ??? or ???? will only be more than happy to keep you company. And they all dance very well. The king konmg can hug like wrestlers do and the yowcharkwai can hop like bouncing popping zombies…….you’ll come back more learned with a new array of dances to show, hehee.

    So, go…….enjoy !

  11. Hi Dan,

  14. Hi

I wish to thank Geok Suan and Pheng Sok for being such nice and entertaining cabin mates.

Being the youngest, I took the upper deck of one of the double-decker beds. I was trying to figure out how to get up there with a chair and the dressing table next to the bed. Finally, with a ladder propped against the side, I managed to have a good view of the ceiling.

By the way, I won the top prize of a trip on board the Star Cruise Virgo worth $478 inclusive of seaport tax of $74. It is for sailing during the Deepavali weekend from 5 to 7 Nov 2010. Your cabin mate needs to pay only $398, inclusive of seaport tax.

If anyone is interested to take over this prize, do write to me soon at xx88sg@gmail.com. Those who know my mobile number may call or text me.

And yes, I am back. I left early and came back by ferry.

    Joy

  15. On a sunny morning at about 9.30 am we finally onboard Longjie and after half an hour sailing it finally anchored at high sea near Penggarang/Tanj. Pengileh (according to Singapore Cruise Centre). An old liner which is about 38 years old which I suspect will be sending to the scrapyard soon. With the exception of the casino most of the facilities such as swimming pools, billiards etc are not operating although it was just sent for maintenance and services recently. There are another 2 casino ships – Leisure World (41 years old) and Royale Star (30 years old – temporarily ceased operation).

It was an interesting weekend retreat with fellow SHCans and come with opportunity to partake in their gossips and sharing session. The foods are not really nice – more like those catering standard. What can we expect for $88 – just breakaway from city life, enjoy the sea breeze and had a joyful night, that’s good enough & justify for the cost we paid. Don’t expect high standard with luxury environment provided, after all….it’s a gambling cruise.

As I am inflicted with some chronic diseases (hypertension, high blood cholesterol, constipation plus others which I have yet to know) I have requested Dan to find out whether if there is any possibility to return earlier by ferry if need to. Fortunately I am healthy as a fiddler during the retreat and there is no need to resort to the earliest ferry to return back but the ironic is – those who expect to stay back opt to return back at the earliest ferry.

Unfortunately, Longjie does not provide the best customer service – the ferry stopped at Batam and we have to change to another ferry for our onward journey back to Harbour Front. Finally it make sense – I was told it will take 2 hours to return (actually journey – 95 minutes) when we only take about 30 minutes to reach the high sea.

It was an interesting way to spend my weekend on the high sea with a break from city life with a totally different environment I am used to. No complaint as I managed to have some inspiration on how to get my internet marketing/selling onto the next level.

  16. Nice to read yr report. Thank you Steven-N.

With the opening of the IRs, the smaller cruise ships which depended almost entirely on gaming to survive, struggled for a while. Many chose to close shop than the ignominous belly-up.

I dare say almost with certainty that if anyone of you had wagered in the casino, you had lost. (So, cast no to cruise ship casinos).

Btw, I hv come across many unhealthy fiddlers who are so incapacitated that the only thing they can do is to twiddle their thumbs which, strangely, remain as fit as a fiddle till life’s end.

    Got it?

  17. It was a trip that i would not haggle about. Just that I need a break from the routine of life. What matter to me is that I began to understand more the ailments that is afflicting me. Besides diabetic, high cholesterol I had also to contend with high blood pressure.

The doctor prescribe all kind of tablets but I put off taking and depended on the health supplements that was ‘highly’ recommended by the MLM company. Having gone back to the doctor and realizing that my self medication is not helping I took the prescription that was recommended.

I was not consistent in taking them and often tends to forget about taking them. Whenever i went back to the doctor, a higher dosage was given. The nurse warned that should I go on this I may have to go on insulin injection.

I love to eat and would not fail to help myself to buffet spread. On last Saturday I may have over-indulged, but everything was alright until the next morning. I took cereal with milk and egg and toast for breakfast.

While talking to the rest, I had a urge to go to the loo. Nothing much happen except that I started to vomit all that I had consumed the night before. Joy asked that I visit the doctor which I did and before the doctor could finish asking questions I vomited again.

The doctor checked and found that my blood pressure was too high and probably the reason I have fainting spell! I failed to take my tablets that morning and is beginning to realize that taking the prescription is essential to my well being. Back at the cabin, I was groaning and tossing and Joy was in tear ‘tatter and torn’. I was supposed to go back to the doctor on board but was not able to. The doctor came grudgingly and checked my sugar level and again it was too high with a reading at 15. Am i a walking time bomb?

It was not a case of contaminated foods that I have eaten, it was my high blood pressure that case my vomiting. Now I realized why taking the tablets is crucial to life. I am very careful with wat I am eating now and probably stick to a vegetarian diet.

There is so much to live for and yet I am taking my health for granted. I do hope that those in a similar situation will take heed and not forget to take their medication as precribed by the doctor!

  19. Hi Dan at message #26,

    Let me share my experiences.

I am inflicted with high blood pressure and constipation since young. I still remember during my medical examination in my primary school days, the nurse keep on pumping the blood pressure gauge (sphygmomanometer) for a few times and after that they have a discussion amongst the nurses. I was just wondering what happened but I was not told. Any way on and off I have giddy spell. The same thing happens when I go for medical examination for my national service. In fact on the day of my enlistment they intend to send me back for further examination however I insist to be enlisted on that very day. I don’t know if it is a good decision.

By the way my cousin was also inflicted with high blood pressure during her 50’s but she refused to take any western prescription medicine. She only last for less than 3 years although she take any secret potion or medicine/supplements recommended by well-meaning friends and relatives.

Now I am inflicted with high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and not forgetting constipation.

I managed the above chronic diseases by:

    (1) regular high blood pressure (since in my late 20’s) and cholesterol (since 6 years back) medication.
    (2) drink about 2 to 3 liter of water daily.
    (3) eat more vegetables and less meat.
    (4) exercises for about 3 hours daily.

During my last 2 visits with my doctor my blood pressure has maintain consistently at 110/70 which is consider very good compared to my previous reading of 130/85.

Although I eat healthily when I am alone or with my family but once I go out with my friends I do not restrict myself. I eat anything and everything and I believe SHCans can testify to that with my attendance of their foods or buffets events.

From my experiences apart from medication, regular exercises are the best way to manage the chronic diseases. I have doing that since in the late 20’s but I was forced to stop when I have a back injury about 10 years back. Luckily about a year back, the doctor finally give me the go ahead to continue my exercises after he discovered that my back is strong and healthy. It could be due to my medication – I have been taking prescription calcium (not supplements) for about ten years. I never believe any supplements especially from MLM. My apology if it offended any MLMers.

To have a healthy body and mind, we need to spend efforts and time. There is no free lunch in this world – you cannot expect something from nothing.

Sorry to hear about the little misadvanture you had on your trip. Hope you are back to normal now.

I just want to mention one éxperience I have which may help you.

Blood pressure is directly effected by your emotions. They go up when you are excited and go down when you are calm. So you need to be calmer than you are already now. And you need to be calm not just on the outside but more importantly, inside yourself.

MM Lee do it by meditation. I tried that, but dirty thoughts keep getting in the way. I found a substitude by just walking with nature …alone. The animals, plants and I, we just observe each other without passing judgement. It is meditation to me. You have to find your own activity that can calm you down.

Invest in a pressure monitor and you can take your pressure yourself before and after each activity to see which one suits you.

  21. Hello Prof Dan @ 26,

Sorry to hear about your condition. Am not a doctor but just heard on radio yesterday that raw garlic helps lower your blood pressure. The dietician recommends 1 raw garlic clove a day. Thot you might consider. Why don’t you try garlic pills? I should think they would work just as well without the unpleasant side effects.

I take them too. So far no apparent or visible side effects. Also understand they are a good source of natural anti-toxin.

    Cheers man, keep it up.

  22. Dear Sam, Steven, TS and Charles,

It heartening to know there are such nice folks who care and share their experiences. I am just living one day at a time, doing whatever good I can.

    Sam, thanks for the concern.

Steven Ng, every morning I tried drinking 5 mugs of water. Have to stop badminton because of knees pain but I am on Taichi twice a week now.

TS, I do have a pressure monitor but always left it on the shelf. Maybe meditation will help, I will try but how to rid myself of all the worries and cares. Perhaps the best bet is to go back to church and look for my missing ‘passport’!

Charles, I have a bottle of Nature’s Way ‘Garlic Perles’ in front of me but have not been consistent in taking it. Now I must do it lah!

    Dan

  23. Hi Dan

Shocked that you have gone through so much during the cruise.

Would like to wish you well , pls take good care!

Diana & myself were talking behind yr back on what a nice gentleman you are.

  24. hi Dan

Meditiation – there is a on going meditation session at the Immaculate heart of Mary at Highland road for the Catholics……same group as Ng Kok Song (see today’s Straits Times article page A10)

    Take care
    freda

  25. Hi June, appreciates the thots.

Freda, thanks for the reference. I used to love singing hymns and find solace and peace in them. Here is one ….

‘Abide with me fast flow the eventide, the darkness deepens Lord with me abide………..”

    Dan

  26. Hello Dan,

Good to know that you are well. Also there are many SHCians who are concerned about your health and have given their share of advice.

Now is my turn to share my experience.

I am a diabetic like you and I am a cardiac patient too with 2 stents in my coronary artery.

I eat healthy meals like steamed fish, boiled fish soups with lots of veges in the soup, less meat(lean), highfibre mixed white rice. I use very little oil, least salt and sugar in my foods. Infact, very bland meals until I have guests/friends over for lunch/dinner.

In this way, I have been able to maintain my diet with no regrets.

Also taking prescription drugs for my medical conditions.

    Good night.

    Geok Suan.

  27. Dear Geok Suan,

Thanks for sharing so much of yourselves and glad to know that in spite of your conditions you are taking it in your stride and enjoying life to the full with fellow SHCians.

On this trip we were glad to have Pheng Sok who joined us. She is the avid storyteller and we were all enthrall by her sharing her life experiences with us. We called her ‘a pinch of Pheng Sok’ for never failing to humour us with her jokes and tales!

Joy was fortunate to win the first prize in the lucky draw worth $478 including seaport tax for one pax. Anyone keen to buy over can have it for half the cost. Do email me at ‘danhuang7728@gmail.com’ if you are interested?

    Dan
