Benefits (just to name a few):-

  • Indoor stationery or outdoor cycling improves balance and leg strength.
  • Give us more strength and stamina over time.
  • A great way to improve our mental health, is ideal for seniors who suffer from memory loss…
  • Is FUN and great supports for socializing when done in Groups ~ a great way to meet new friends.

SHC Cycling – Finally Rolled Out

The long waited SHC cycling event finally went on smoothly on:
Date : 17July 2021
Meeting Point : “Go Cycling” Bike Rental Kiosk
Time : 1630hrs for those that need to rent the bicycle
(Supposed to start at 1700hrs but was slightly delayed as some arrived abit late)
Destination : ECP ===> MBS

A total of 10 members were there to kick start this event:
1) DouglasC – EO
2) Ronald Lam – CoEO
3) AndrewK
4) JasmineW
5) JohnH
6) BobbyB
7) DollyL
8) SereneL
9) LinaN

Sadly that YK was only to meet later on the our return to rental kiosk after cycling.

Despite of slight delay, weather was hot and humid but all members shown great enthusiasm with SereneL started to cycle first with the rest of us followed up later.  Many pics attached can attest.

Bonding can be seen amongst members from the starting point to Tanjong Rhu (1st rest point) finally to MBS.  As much as everyone wanted to mingle around but was constantly kept reminding by DouglasC and RonaldL for safe distancing measures.  Kudos to DouglasC and RonaldL.

While 3 of us continued to cycle further and stopped to watch NDay rehearsal but the rest need to get back to rental kiosk due to time constraint and proceed to have dinner at EC food centre.  As for us, we had a dinner at St Marc while cycling to ECP.

Hope that SHC monthly cycling event will continue henceforth from now… Cheers..

A benevolent person, Yew Keong never fails to show his kindness and love interest in engaging anyone regardless of their age to partake in this cycling activities.  A member of Facebook Public Group “Singapore Park Connection Network, otherwise know as, SG PCN Cyclist”, currently joined hands with fellow enthusiast of 47.8K…

Do take a peek on this Straits Times review published on Sunday, 27 June 2021

https://www.straitstimes.com/sport/cycling-seven-year-old-covers-75km-in-5-hours-veteran-gives-boy-his-medal-for-amazing-feat

ST20210627_202119601467 Yong Li Xuan/ cyocbc/ Afi, 7, completed a 75.3km bike ride from Bukit Panjang to Coney Island in 5 hours. After Afi’s personal achievement was shared in a Facebook group, an experienced cyclist Loh Yew Kwong gave Afi an OCBC Ride 2021 medal to encourage him. The OCBC Cycle team has arranged for Afi and his family to meet Yew Kwong.

We do have our very own cycling group communities – jointly organized by Douglas Chan, Ronald Lam and Loh Yew Kwong on a monthly basis.  Take up this hobby as a form of exercise and have a good bonding with all passionate cyclists – Keep exploring with your Bike and who knows you might capture some beautiful scenes while cruising.

Below is the FB write-up link from a mother thanking Yew Kwong for his kind gesture…

Zonal Meeting – Boleh Boleh! In The Clementi Mall

The 7th Zonal meet-up managed to make its way on Friday, 16 April 2021 to Boleh Boleh! located at 3155 Commonwealth Ave West #04-20/22, Singapore 129588.  The session starts from 11am and end slightly after 3.30pm with the 2 EOs at their helms to make sure no one was left out.

We had 11 members signed up and all turned up for this makan and friendship bonding.   We had to split into 2 tables to observe safe distancing measures.  They are:-

  • VincentH – EO
  • ChanKH – Co-EO
  • AnneC
  • ChengWK
  • DollyL
  • FongWC
  • JessieO
  • StellaS
  • MargaretS
  • SherryW
  • EveC

Many interesting discussions on wellness & health, tours & holidays and current activities besides Zonal meet-up, were shared and discussed among members.  I must say that mission accomplished for each and every one especially for me, longing for this catch-up with ex-colleague cum friend of 25years, MargaretS was to no avail till now.

Some of us need to leave by 2pm but both 2 EOs together with Cheng were still chatting while waiting for the remaining members to turn up.

Lastly, kudos to VincentH and ChanKN for their efforts towards this meet-up as well as Cheng for his company, we can see from photos of many smiling or laughing faces.  BTW, do make a guess, where and when will the next Zonal meet-up be?  Or why not give us an option or suggestion and liaise with ChanKN and he will create a future meet-up link…  the continuation will be ongoing and happening again…

Cheers… DollyL

27 FEBRUARY WALK AT KAMPONG GLAM

SHC has several activities catered to the various interest of its members. During this pandemic Covid-19 period, walking was one of physical activities that is on-going. However, walkers were only allowed in groups of not more than 8 pax.

The Laughter Yoga+walks is one such group that conducts several scenic walks taking the lushes landscapes and waterways routes. Leisure walks, taking in the sights, discovering nature and KODAK moments are some of the highlights.  I believe, there are other walking/hiking groups, but the level of intensity is beyond me. The route is much longer and the concentration of the terrain maybe tough for me too. More importantly, I enjoy the camaraderie of the Laughter Yoga+walks members. No hard pressure to keep up, but the discipline of each and every member is very important to adhere the safety and pleasure of other members.

On 27 Feb, our walk was unique as it was a ‘city walk’. EOs Irene, Lydia and Iris did a fantastic job planning and organising this walk. To organise these weekly walks, the EOs needs to gather the parks information such as the route, its intensity, toilet facilities. Not to mention meeting points,  MRT/bus route, dinner place to chill out and the all important back up route, if it rains.

We began punctually at 4.30pm from Bugis MRT. Our 1st photo shoot, all aboard on the bullock cart pulled by Ox-y, since this is his year.

Our 1st destination was Blanco Fish Soup at Beach Road. The rich broth was flavorful and the chunks of meat from the fried fish head was fresh. Besides fish soup dishes, other yummy dishes such as ngoh hiang, omelette and fried vegetables were served too.

At Kampong Glam, Irene gave us a brief history of the place,  and we spent some time to take in the area’s atmosphere.  At the Sultan Gate, we admired the grandeur of the Sultan Mosque, followed by photo taking session. We came across a giant platform swing and the child within us had to have a go at it.

We walked our way towards Arab Street. The beautiful colourful Mediterranean wares added vibrancy to the street. The evening scene of Kampong Glam was so alive, touristy and full of night life.  Muscat Street was laced with interesting eateries with locals and tourist having their meals al fresco style.

At Haji Lane, we could not resist dropping in the shops for its modern quirky items. This lane is known for catering to the youngsters as a hangout. On the walls, are several paintings and photo worthy graphics. At the end of Haji Lane towards Beach Road, tourists and locals were enjoying their drinks seated on bar stools, their tables filled with munchies, liquor and beer. They seemed to be having a good time, chatting and chilling out.

As we left Haji Lane, a more subdued road greeted us. We continued our walk towards Raffles City for McDonalds to cool down before heading home.  It was so lovely to sit, chat and enjoy each’s company over soft ice cream, drink and food to round off the walk.

Though the walk was in the city, the walking along these routes,  time mingling and looking out of each other in the crowd was equivalent to the time taken in the parks. Exhausted, I may be at the end of it, I totally enjoy it and look forward for my next walk with this group.

A big shout out to Irene, Lydia and Iris for efforts in organising our weekly walks.

2021-03-05 Zonal Meet Up @ Toa Payoh HDB Hub

I would like to take this moment to thank both ChanKN and DollyL to initiate and organize Toa Payoh Zone as the 5th location. It is a food paradise within walking distance.

Original plan to hold it at TPY KouFu was switched to Fork & Spoon at the last hour due to mid-afternoon crowd bombarded mostly by seniors in a matured estate. Both ChanKN and myself were early trying to secure 2 long tables of 8 pax but failed. A quick decision to switch location was made coz I am confident there are afternoon vacant tables there… I quickly rushed over to recce and manage to get 2 long tables by 3:00pm.

After much hiccups, we [3] managed to gather 11 members to join us at Fork & Spoon. The remaining 5 stayed at KouFu and ordered their food instead which is good for us coz it is indeed a big group.  Namely, DavidO n LilianC, AnnieS, SherryW and RichardW.

Photo images of both locations and food ordered showed a successful bonding amongst the members, from initial Koufu to Fork & Spoon and later adjourned to Gourmet Paradise for famous Soon Heng Rojak shows it all.

Meanwhile at Fork & Spoon – we received a SOS call that some of them were unsure of the location. Hence, we took the initiative to go and ferry them here. Though a bit disorganized in the location but am glad we can see smiling faces amongst them gleefully enjoy the remaining hours in deep entertaining discussion on travels, gardening tips and not forgetting SRVouchers on how to redeem it.

I must say to shout out loud or applaud to SherryW, our ardent Zonal fan, who took the effort to join the remaining team at Fork & Spoon.

Overall, this Zonal catch-up bonding is a salute to all participating member who made it happen. Images shows it all as the saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words”.

Looking forward to the next bonding…

A Fruitful Outing to Kampung Kampus – Home of GUI

Saturday, 23rd January 2021

A group of 6 members consist of ChanKN, MelissaK, FredaL, JasmineW, VincentH and DollyL visited to GUI (Ground-Up Initiative) Singapore 21st Century “School of Life’ in a nature-inspired campus this morning guided as promised by DennisH which ended with fantastic lunch there too.

Each and every one was extremely excited along with way while DennisH patiently guiding and showing us his very own vermicomposting project.  Vermicomposting is a decomposition process by which various species of worms are used to convert organic materials (usually wastes) into humus-like material known as vermin-compost which can possibly use on farms.

Followed by to a quick look at a self-made kitchen where one can enroll in baking.  Today, they were baking pineapple tarts and pizza using traditional Tabun oven – a clay oven, shaped like a truncated cone, with an opening at the bottom from which to stoke the fire…  Fascinating is the word that I wanted to use to describe this.

Then, a walk to vegetable garden plot whereby vegetables and spices are being grown there.  As usual, shopping seems to be always an interest to us, so some bought organic veggies, gingers and chikus at a reasonable price.

Next, we saw a group of volunteers washing lots of plastic bottles and containers for recycling.  Currently, they are only able to use #2 – HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) plastic most commonly used and is considered one of the safest forms of plastic.  Was told that they are in the midst of asking for funding to procure a machine to be able to recycle other different types of plastics.  Good Luck.. Type #2 plastic after washed can be re-make into coaster for cups and kettle holders.

GUI also make sure that kids are not being left out too, we strolled along another plot of land whereby playground were built into look-alike construction site (kids’ version) so that these kids were given hands-on working experience together with adults.  Along the way, we noticed Woodcraft classes being conducted.

I am sure that we had covered almost everything we wanted to know or maybe I can hear my stomach calling out for lunch.  WaHaHa… LUNCH TIME!!!

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to DennisH whom had given us much of his informative details and the patience he had shown as we were busy taking many photos.

Zonal Meeting @ NEX – 28 December 2020

Our 4th Hangout at Food Junction – NEX with EO Melissa Khng assisted by ChanKN [from 11:30am to 03:00pm].

Our darling, EO Melissa, was there at 10:45am, putting bag, water bottles to chop 3 section of 6-pax seating arrangement to ensure that all members can be seated comfortably upon their arrival.  But, regret to say that at times, situation just not in our favour, so, very unreluctantly, we finally decided to say bye bye to 1 section as the lunch crowds kept increasing and every eyes were staring at our sides liao… paiseh lah!

At strike of 12.15pm, members were seen coming towards us with Melissa busy allocating seats for them since there was only 9 seats reserved instead of the original 15.  Then came a member with shiny armour (Bobby Bok) had graciously offered to buy each and every member a drink.  Sue Chan and Lina Ng were also sharp enough to spot on another table near to us to make the group complete in 1 corner.  It was indeed a show of cooperation among these members to ensure a safe distancing.

What happened next – Aiyo!!!  Of cos, chatting, networking and taking of photos lah.. and not forgetting our lunches too.  It was indeed an afternoon well spent.  Till we meet again…

Cheers!

Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum

Where were we on Christmas Eve?

We (Chan Keng Ngee, Katherine, Laura Wee, Jasmine Wong, Sandra Chuah, Lydia Chin, Annie Seah and me la) spent our morning touring Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum at the Kent Ridge Campus of the National University of Singapore.  Officially opened on 18 April 2015.

The Museum currently has more than 560,000 catalogued lots in its collection and over a million specimens from throughout the region and about 2000 of these are exhibited in the museum’s galleries.

Everyone had a wonderful time walking thru these history memory lanes and also busy taking photographs to showcase too…

We initially scheduled to leave around 12 noon for our lunch but was delayed till 2pm as there were more to cover but time was not at our side as we can heard our stomach crying for food liao.

Eateries around NUS were either not opened to public or too much R&R to follow so we finally landed in Alexandra Village for our lunch.

Many thanks to ChanKN for making this trip possible as he got discounted lobang for entrance tickets.  Till the next outing…

Cheers!

SHC Treasure Hunt – Saturday, 28 November 2020

Our very first physical race on a lovely Saturday.  In total, we have 4 Teams of 4 participants each – namely, AJIV, WATERMELON, BANANA and KIWI – a combination of male and females.

This activity was created to encourage walking as a form of exercise cum teambuilding – as we see quite a number of energetic and enthusiastic members doing such walk on a regular basis.

Feeling energetic is a key to happiness and studies do show that you will feel much better not only about yourself but when you feel exhausted, overwhelmed and blue – a completed task DONE will probably gives you the sensation of relief.

Treasure Hunt is a game organized by Terence who prepares a list of 10 images taken at Marina Barrage.  Being a tracker myself, upon arrival on site, these images will be forwarded to the respective Team Leader to start their Hunting Race – the goal is to be the first team to complete the list.  Players take photographs of the listed items and post it back to me.  In return, I will take note of each treasure found and recorded the timing from my mobile and compile it to get the total time taken to complete their task.

Feedback from the Hunt Racers – fun with laughter and engaging as a team but sweaty and tiresome.  At the end of the race, some continued to enjoy the serenity of Marina Barrage with kite flying and thereafter a wholesome dinner – isn’t that what we call ??…

The HUNT has been set for 3 days and we still have up to Monday to complete the race and result will be announced on Tuesday noon, 01 December 2020.
