A Tribute to Robert Quek

Latest Update : Robert’s Wake is held at Mount Vernon Sanctuary, Purity Hall.  Was told that funeral will be on this Friday, 8 Apr 2011 – Details will be updated later… Dolly

Another SHC member, Robert Quek had left us today (Apr 4, 2011) – He was admitted on April 1 to Tan Tock Seng Hosptial due to massive stroke which subsequently went into coma.  Sad to be told by his family members that his heart had stopped and passed on with  both Kristy and son by his side.  Many friends were beside him. – A group of us were there to pay him visit before this and we were all praying hard that he is able to pull thru’ – I supposed Robert felt that this is best that he wanted himself to be.

Both Robert and Kristy had joined SHC in Y2007.  He was a good natured and humble man which I am sure that they were well liked by many other members.  He was very active in events’ planning for many SHC members.  I can still remembered that he used to arrange for  free concerts and movies at either Esplanade or NUS, Weekly MacRitchie walks, Dinner & Live Band at Changi Saiing Club, Monthly makan and social get together, Special wak to the Tree-top and Observation Tower, many Self Development seminars, etc etc

He was also a very sporting member which I can remembered very well during our 2nd SHC D&D – he was impersonating a Japanese dancer which brought us a lots of laughters and fond memories.

Sympathy and condolences to both Kristy and son and may we prayed for them to be strong to face life ahead.

As this point of time, I do not have any other more updated details to be given here.. Once they are available, I will update accordingly.

Always remembered by Dolly

  1. A silent moment for Robert.
    God Bless.
Though I do not know Robert well, he had impressed on me to be an affable man.

Dear Kristy, do be strong. I’m sure Robert would want both you and your son to be well.

    Sincerely

  5. A sad & hopeful song.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1GmxMTwUgs

    Angel” Lyrics:
    Spend all your time waiting
    for that second chance
for a break that would make it okay
    there’s always some reason
    to feel not good enough
and it’s hard at the end of the day
    I need some distraction
    oh a beautiful release
    memory seeps from my veins
    let me be empty
    oh and weightless and maybe
    I’ll find some peace tonight

In the arms of the angel
    fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you fear
you are pulled from the wreckage
    of your silent reverie
you’re in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here

So tired of the straight life
    and everywhere you turn
there’s vultures and thieves at your back
    the storm keeps on twisting
you keep on building the lies
that you make up for all that you lack
    it don’t make no difference
    escaping one last time
    it’s easier to believe
    in this sweet madness oh
this glorious sadness that brings me to my knees

In the arms of the angel
    fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you fear
you are pulled from the wreckage

  6. My condolensces and sympathy to Kristy & family,

I remember him as a humble, helpful, knowledgeable and humourous friend.

Besides what Dolly had mentioned of his contributions , he is also actively involved in helping those “unfortunate” in his R.I.C.H. ( not wealthiness but stands for Regular Interaction Circle of Harmony ) support group through monthly gathering at his home most of the time. And feedback from members that they are very happy with those activities at the gatherings.

Kristy and son,Nicky be strong . We share your sadness too. Nicky please take very good care of Kristy as Robert , her caregiver is no longer around.

  7. Many thanks to Dolly for putting up this post of a tribute to Robert Quek Soo Kee , an ex English retired school teacher.

    Appreciated,
    Steven Chan

  8. My heart is heavy – had just gone to see him and on reaching home, received news of his passing.

Always remembered – a smiling face at the SHC events which he attended with Kristy. His handshake was warm and assuring. He would joke and made everyone laughed. Will miss him.

    Kristy, be strong.

  9. I was beside his bed , holding his hands and with tears in my eyes calling out to him and reliving our memories of our good times together hoping that he can pull through as the doctor said he can still hear but cannot respond. And pray very hard that a miracle can happen.

According to the doctor who was around , she said Robert’s heart has stopped beating ( 0 pulse ) but there is still some electrical brain impulses. She was waiting for all the impulses to stop before he can be certified dead.

Half an hour later, Kristy ,Nicky and a pastor from the Salvation army arrived and was praying for him. Kristy, Nicky and many friends were around to see the last of him.

  10. Hi All,
I had updated the post to include the details of Robert’s wake at Mount Vernon Sanctuary, Purity Hall.

Sam and me will be going there 2nite.

Spoken to Kristy this morning and she said that Robert probably missed the SHC groups n glad that we had visited him last nite. We r glad that we make this trip down..

    Be strong, Kristy… Regards… Dolly

  11. I spoke to Kristy on the phone yesterday afternoon asking abt Robert’s condition and said that I’ll pray for him and hope some miracle would happen. Now so sad to hear he passed away. I always remember his smiling & cheerful face
whenever he attended SHC events with Kristy. All of us from SHC will miss you Robert Quek.

My deepest condolence to Kristy and son, be strong & I too share the sadness with you.

  12. So sorry to hear about Robert Quek’s demise. His passing is so sudden and Kristy and their son have my deepest condolences.

I remember Robert Quek and Kristy as one of the most likeable couples in SHC.

    My message for Kristy is:
Grieve for him Kristy, but life has to go on. Be strong for your son. Look to the future with your son. Take care.

  13. With deep sadness, we have lost Robert, a fine gentlemen, humourous, loving husband & helpful, a fun guy to be with.
Be it Beautiful Sunday at Esplanade, Art & film festivals, esp outdoor screening of movies like Tg Rhu open field, Robert would post or email us to join him & Kristy.

We all will missed Robert Quek.

    Kristy – be strong!

  14. In the midst of my busy morning in office… i just can’t help but cry out… Oh God.. why do u allow good people to die???

Bless his soul, O God… for our brother Robert Quek has departed from us… to be with you. Eternally.

O God .. give strength to Kristy & son. Comfort them in this time of distress. Kristy, if you’re reading this.. i’ll always have fond memories of the times we spent together. I will always remember the time when I was very new in SHC, and you & Robert welcomed me to your home for an afternoon karaoke & hi-tea. And then we adjourned to the hotel talk. I can’t recall the talk’s topic, but I can always remember the warmth you’ve extended to me, as a new member. And the numerous other subsequent outings with both yourself & Robert.

Take care & god bless you.

    Lydia.

  17. Dear Kristy

My deepest sympathy and condolences to you and your family. I hope you will take good care of yourself.

I remember Robert as the soft spoken Gentleman who dotes on his wife. And would offer rides home for those who do not drive. Even though its not on the way, he will still insist its on the way. And arranging for us the talks and seminar, and the dinners after that. Always have a smile for everyone. Never ever see him lose his cool.

And yes Dolly, I remember him as the cute Japanese “girl” with the umbrella and cha kiak. Always so sporting!

    Dear Robert

Rest in peace. We will miss you.

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline

  18. Hi Kristy, Robert may have left us, but the memories remain. I wish you stay strong and that you continue to move on with your life.

    Take care.

  20. Oh dear! I remember Robert and Kristy. I see them together at SHC events. I recalled Robert making a collage of photos of the Monthly Meeting held at Marilyn Tang’s condo. He asked for my email and sent me the collage.

May God bless Kristy and son. Robert has led a fruitful and active life and although he is gone, he is not forgotten.

    Rosalind

  21. Dear Kristy,

My deepest condolences to you and your family. Be strong and please take good care of yourself. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Robert, may you rest in peace. We will miss you.

    With fond memories,
    Gingko

  23. Dear Kristy

Sincere condolences to you and your son.

I am glad I had the pleasure of knowing Robert and yourself
although briefly and will always remember Robert diligently putting up posts for movies and self development talks. Both of you took the time to come down on a Sunday to have lunch at pek kio with the badminton group and he even took pictures and emailed to us very soon after. It shows both your caring nature. He will be missed. He will be looking after you and your son from Heaven. God Bless!

  24. Dear Kristy

  25. Patrick, I am not good on photography work and if u can volunteer to do, pls feel free to do so.

Few members had asked for direction to the funeral wake but sorry, I am afraid that I am unable to help on this. Any other members, can help, pls advise. Many thanks.

Those who intend to attend the wake, kindly be informed that they will closed and locked the door by 10.30pm.

  26. We lost a stalwart man and a wonderfully jovial person. He was one of the earlier EO who organized activities for the Club.

Dear Kristy, we pray that you will be strong knowing that Robert has gone to a better place!

Dolly, the cremation is at the brand new Mandai Crematorium as Mt Vernon has ceased to be a crematorium.

    Dan

  27. I read Dolly’s post on Monday night, almost as soon as it was posted. I could not bring myself to leave a reply then. Somehow, no words seem appropriate at times like these.

My heartfelt condolences go to Kristy and son. It is my loss that I did not get too know Robert better. We can take comfort that he is now in a better place.

  29. Dear Robert

“I shall pass this way but once; any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show – let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again” is a quote many of us have heard of, and you were the living example.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of your passing and will miss your presence and our next chess game. You said you were going into secret training.

Dear Kristy, you have my deepest sympathies. Take comfort that an angel is watching over you and your son. Be strong and take care.

  32. Dear Kristy,

We read with sadness Robert’s passing. We remember him for the events he planned for SHC members. He was so humble, helpful & well liked.

Our deepest sympathy & condolence to you and your family.

    Philip & Priscilla Wee

  33. Dear Kristy & Nicky,
Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that you are very close in every thought & prayer.
God saw Robert getting tired and a cure was not to be.So He put his arms around him and whispered “Come to Me”
With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you pass away.
Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
May your soul Rest In Peace,Robert.

  34. Dear Kristy

I only met you and Robert once at the get together at Madeline’s condo. you both gave me good impression of being warm, friendly and Robert is such a gentleman. He invited me to the free movie and told me how to get to NUS (though I said it’s very far from where i live).
My deepest condolence …be strong Kristy.

  35. Dear Kristy,

I was shocked to hear of this bad news only this morning. Even though I hardly went out with you n Robert but the memories of our last get-together was having coffee & chips at KFC with a few other SHC friends after a dinner n dance. If you remember, we were sharing our thots on having just an only child and how hard it was to let go of our apron strings etc.

Kristy, do be strong and always remember that you have lots of friends out there esp. in SHC so let time and friends be your best healer. Robert will always be remembered in our hearts as a kind, gentle and fun-loving man. With sincere sympathy and condolences…. Lisa O.

My heartfelt condolences to you and your son. I can only hope that you will be resilient and continue with life, with its happy memories. Stay strong and positive!

Good-bye Robert – I will always remember your smile and the few words exchanged whenever we chanced to meet at SHC functions.

    May you rest in peace!

  38. Hi Kristy,

Robert has left us only to be with the Lord, so be strong with Nicky to learn and discover a new plan ahead. Your loss is our great loss too for those who knew his big warmth, caring heart and cheerful mind. You were both willing to share all you have with anyone and your home was always open to one and all.

Please continue to live as he did, just as the Lord as welcome him, continue to welcome others to your heart.

Goodbye Robert, your journey has just begun. Dont’ worry,
there are many friends here for Kristy, to keep her company.

  39. Dear Kristy

My deepest condolences to you and your son, Nicky

I remember those days when we had small gatherings at your home and Ron Lai’s home and also the free afternoon concerts at Esplanade and the lunches after the concerts

We will miss you, Robert and may you rest in peace, Amen

Kristy, be strong and take care

  40. Dear Kristy and Nicky

I was taken by surprise and sadden to read Robert’s passing. My deepest condolence to you. Be strong and stay positive.

I remember Robert as a kindhearted and lovable person and these are a few of his many wonderful personalities. Always with a smile on this face so sincerely deep within from his heart.

We had a chance for the 3 of us to be photographed at a function we attended together. Robert kindly emailed to me and this photo is so lovely.

Robert, rest my friend. Do not worry about Kristy and Nicky, the Lord will continue to guide and keep them safe with you by His side in heaven.

    We will miss you

    Agnes

  41. Dear Kristy,

Though some of us (SHC members)visited Robert on 4.4.11 around 7 plus, we didn’t had a chance to speak to him.

I was shock to hear that he’d passed away on that very night when I came back.

Robert will be always remembered as a good friend of mine and I will always keep him in my prayers.

Please be strong and I hope to be able to reach you by his hp. Will you still keep the same number as a rememberance?
I understand that you are staying elsewhere and I’m afraid I wont be able to reach you at your residence.

    Yours truly,
    Cat Ho

  42. Hi Kristy,

I visited Mr Robert in the Hospital on 4 Apri 11 at abt 8.30 am. My deepest condolensces to you and your family. Quotes for today: As we put the front foot down, we lift the back foot up. We let yesterday go, and focus on today !!

    Take Good Care !!!

    Thomas Loh

  43. In lieu of catching up with old friends today at the monthly meeting, I checked out the www.

Reading Robert’s passing shows how transient is our existence here on earth, more so with this age group.

My condolence to Kristy and their son. May Robert rests in peace.

I will always remember Robert’s caring ways in arranging for us to attend training sessions at the basement of Hotel Intercontinental.

Regards to one and all …………… Edwin
