  1. SHC all Mandarin event is now confirmed. Details on the Post. If you are coming, please register asap, as I expect the first 50 pax to be picked up very soon.

If you have a stall, which you like to set up, please let us know here. Note, this is subject to meeting the theme for the night. There is no charge for the table.

If you have a suggestion, please raise it up here too.

If there is a song which you like to hear, do let us know too. The song should fit the theme, and able to bring vibrance to the audience and floor. Sorry, there will be no adhoc singing, all items are pre-scheduled. Singers, especially group singers, will be contacted by the organisers.

Entrance is strictly to registered SHC members, who join before 15 Aug 2011. Please bring your name tag, if not, please make one yourself.

We hope this event will be a fun event, memorable too. The moon is likely to be very big, since it is closest to earth at this time. So, come and have a romantic night.

  2. YatSing,

Perfect, a great start to using Pinyin. Altho I cannot write Chinese, I encourage you to write in Chinese too, traditional or simplified.

Dan, Joy, always can count on both of you.

And Oi Cheng, feel free to edit this post for registration. You have the access.

  3. Beautiful mid-autumn festival celebration.

It is more than a month away, so we have plenty of time to practise some nice-nostalgic songs.

ONE of them is ???????….THE MOON REPRESENTS MY HEART

Count me in Terrence. Please advise how and when to pay.

  4. Hi Daniel, Judy, Audrey, and all who are planning to come,

Sounds like the three of you are very romantic at heart. We appreciate the moon, especially a full moon.

I am sure Janet Chan will be having a hard time, trying to make the evening romantic, nostalgic and enjoyable. Janet, thank you for taking up this role. I dont know too many mandarin songs, but I know all all of us would be very happy to see and hear you sing too. Thank you Boon Liang, for helping in this event.

    Hi Pearl,

Am very pleased that I will be able to meet up with you during this event. When you are ready, please give us some brief insights into this drama of yours and the team.

    Terence Seah

  5. When I was young, my mother used to bring my brothers and sisters to the garden to see the full moon, during the mid-autumn festival. We were all excited to see the men’s face on the moon.

As I grow older, into the early twenties, I get pretty romantic, and had sweet visions of what it would be like to spend mid-autumn festival with that someone I love. Well, at that time, I was overseas studying in London. Unfortunately, she had found someone else, but I still remembered her during the mid-Autumn festival.

As i grow older still, I encouraged my nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters to celebrate Mid-Autumn festival, with lanterns, moon-cakes and time together. Nowadays, this occasion is usually skipped by the new generations, and not celebrated. However, I believe we are all of the same generation, and we go through the same stages in life.

Come and enjoy this evening, this time with fellow friends in SHC. It’s One night in Chinatown.

Who would bring luggage?? Kekekekee. Except to use as a chair since seating is limited. In which case, it’s better off to bring portable folding chair – very Chinatownish and thematic.

I think if YatSing’s #2 written in Chinese should be
    ??????????“????“? ?????????10??

In English, it should be: I will take part in this special “one night in ChinaTown”. You haven’t mentioned how to pay the $10.

Am I right, YatSing? The word ?should be only ye, not yeh. Show off, haha.

  17. Hi Terence

I’m interested in celebrating the mid-autumn festival with you people. Normally, this festival is just another day for me. Please count me in….I’m sure it will be memorable and fun….albeit my Mandarin is half past six! May need a translator.

Looking forward to some good fun,
    Gabriella

  18. We have two very talented SHCians, fluent in Mandarin, and of course, in English; and they will be our co-comperes for our “One night in Chinatown”.

They are Janie Leong and Thomas Loh. Janie may be new; but she is active and has has joined SHC since May 2009; while Thomas Loh joined SHC in April 2008. Thomas had co-compered previous events like our Stars-in-Concert and “One night in Shanghai”.

Thank you Thomas and Janie. Pleae keep yourselves update on this forum.

Working in the background is Oi Cheng, she is taken care of the registration and payment for this event. Oi Cheng is a strong supporter of SHC, and has participated in many key SHC activities. Oi Cheng joined us in Aug 2006. Gee, long time.

    Terence Seah

  19. The SilverHairsClub’s key objective is to provide a platform for SilverHairs to meet new and more friends. A strong drawing to achieving this objective is music. As you know, music makes the world go round.

Our theme “One night in Chinatown” will be a great success because of music, and the participation of SHCians. To make this night fun and memorable, especially when the full moon is shining, we have Janet Chan to lead in the songs and music segment. Janet loves to sing in Mandarin and Cantonese; and she is passionate about it. Janet joined SHC in Aug 2007.

Assisting Janet is Boon Liang. Some of you may know him as SHC’s John Travolta. Both Janet and Boon Liang worked together as a great team, and together they will make “One night in Chinatown” romantic, fun and memorable. Boon Liang joined SHC in June 2006.

As SilverHairs, we have high expectations of the events being organised by members for members. However, there is a lot of pressure heaped on the organisers; and in particular Janet and Boon Liang. We have 1 month 8 days to go, before the event. I am a firm believer that no matter how perfect we plan each event, things do go wrong. A little hiccup makes the event even more interesting.

I hope you will come and join the event. Meet new friends and catch up with old ones too. Have fun.

    Terence Seah

  21. HI Oi Cheng,

Pls include my name. Some of our drama team mates hv not registered yet. I noticed these names are still missing.. Frisna Tan, Judy Lim, Bee Gek, Thomas Loh .. Pls enrol them.

    Regards, LydiaChin.

  22. Hi Terence#9,

I do look forward to meet you on 10 Sept, surely!

5 weeks towards your ‘One Night In Chinatown’ is drawing very near and our SHC drama group have only 2 more rehearsals before their first performance of “Mooncake Festival Celebration – Homecoming’.

Casts for the above drama performance are –
    1. Dan Huang / Father Mr Huang
    2. Grace Kang / Mother Mrs Huang
    3. Eunice Tay / Eldest Daughter Li Ee
    4. Frisna / 2nd Daughter Li Na – not in the play, cant commit cos of work
    5. Lydia Chin / 3rd Daughter – Li Chuin
    6. Janet Chan / 4th & Youngest Daughter Li Chen / Siao Mei (pet name)
    7. Thomas Loh / as Lydia Chin’s Boy-Friend Lai Fah from Shanghai
    8. Bee Gek / Eldest Grand-Daughter Shan Shan, Daughter of Eunice Tay
    9. Judy Lim / 2nd Grand-Daughter Ting Ting, Daughter of Frisna
    10. Sarah Kassim / as Bibik, Eurasian Neighbour of Mr & Mrs Huang
    11. Boon Liang / as Bibik’s Nephew Freddy

    The Synopsis of ‘Homecoming’ –

Mr & Mrs Huang has 4 daughters.
Their eldest, 2nd & 3rd daughters live overseas.
Their youngest daughter lives with them.

The elderly couple had not celebrated Mooncake Festival eversince their three daughters moved overseas some years ago.
Lately, all three daughters decided to come back for good.

Mr & Mrs Huang are so happy & elated with the great news.
They start to prepare for the Mooncake Festival Celebration they never had for a long time cos their daughters ‘Homecoming’ coincide with the festival month, thats the 8th month of the Lunar Calender. They also invite their good neighbour Bibik, and Bibik brings along her nephew Freddie so as to match-make him with Siao Mei…..

I proposed the Play Title ‘Mooncake Festival Celebration’ since you, Terence wanted an event thats very Chinese and Lydia Chin added a very warm Sub-Title ‘Homecoming’ which unfolds the return of the three immigrated daughters from America, HK & Shanghai.

The Casts are encouraged to create their own stories & dialogues.
I edited them so that the whole dialogue does not go out of proportion of the whole storyline given 30mins to the whole play.

The play has some dancing by the 2 grand-daughters actually –
but due to some difficulties in programming the music I found in Youtube
to the Kovan Cafe’s sound system, the dance is regretably taken off the play. The dance and this piece of Chinese music is actually the high-light of the whole play.

Well, do give us some feedbacks after the show and hopefully more will be inspired to join our drama group – all are welcome and we need more males!!!

    Be There!!
    pearl.

  23. Hi Pearl,

Just read your synopsis. Looks very promising. Especially with Freddie and Siao Mei being typecasted.

But is the dialogue in English?

Also how about “Autumn Homecoming” as a suggestion? (Not sure how it sounds in Mandarin, but only a suggestion) Perhaps “Seeds of Autumn Romance” You know how they like to use nature as descriptives. Of course most important, I don’t know how they will sound in putong hua.

Lastly any mooncakes? To set the mood? Or lanterns?

Cheers and best wishes on this maiden attempt.

  24. Hello Charles C.,

Thanks for the comments and the well wishes.

As proposed by Terence, the event is supposed to be strictly Mandarin.

As usual, we will have Malay & Peranakan members who cant speak the language, so i suppose Terence wont mind a little English but most of my plays are multi-lingual.

Haha, as for details, you will know when you watch the show.
    What do you think?
Will there be mooncakes & lanterns if this play is all for the occassion?

    Anything is possible Charles –
and that’s a lovely name for your ‘akan datang’ play if you be the lead.
You have ample time to think of the Chinese translation & the synopsis,
let me know after 10 Sept. When would you like to perform this?
Bear in mind you need at least 2 – 3mths to rehearse.
Hehe, November is still Autumn right?

  25. Charles Chua,
There will be lanterns and moon cakes on premise. It is the first time in SHC history that we have an “All Mandarin” event and we are also honoured to have a new drama group giving us their debut performance.

    SHC members,
Prepare yourself for the challenge of speaking only Mandarin on that night. The excitement and lots of laughter from trying to keep to one language is definitely a challenge for us S’poreans…..haha….. (We are so used to mixing languages with dialects like rojak, so very Singaporean.)

  26. Hi Oi Cheng,

Is Oi Cheng and the POSB savings A/C no good enough for me to transfer money into your A/c?

    Sorry don’t know your surname.

    Thanks. Geok Suan.

  27. Hi Geok Suan

No name is required for fund transfer thru IB. Imptly the beneficiary’s account must be 100% correct including the account type. Except POSB n DBS, other banks would also require branch n bank account codes.

  28. Thanks YK, your response to Geok Suan #52.

The next important thing to remember is to quote your name if thru IB and please leave a note here and date of transfer if thru ATR, so I can update the list.

Currently, I have one ATR transfer – waiting for someone to raise hand.

  29. Hi Pearl #47,

Thank you and your team for the plans and effort to entertain our club members with this theme drama “Homecoming” during next month’s All Mandarin event “One night in Chinatown”. I am sure all members will look forward to watching this drama with excitement.

And, for the benefit of participating members,
Yes, there will be lanterns. We have in mind to put up 200 paper lanterns. So, this will set the mood. I have asked Sam to hunt for 200 paper lanterns from JB.

Music equipment wise, they will be tested sometime next week. A sound mixer, two speakers, and some 4-5 microphones. Thank you to the people working in the background with Boon Liang to get this working. There is also a plan to put up a screen with overhead projector. Again, BL, thank you for coming down all the way after work to make this event a success.

To all those who are planning to set up stalls.
You may have one table and a few chairs. Please let us know what you will be putting up.

By the way, last weekend, I was in Chinatown; and i saw an old man playing a dont-know what you call it, something like a guitar, not a ulk, but he was playing lovely Chinese music, with an attached mic, speaker. Well, if one of you can volunteer to set this up and play Chinese evergreens, away from the stage, please let us know. If not, I may have to go back and look for this musician.

Let’s enjoy this romantic “One night in Chinatown”. Even if you are not comfortable with Mandarin, do join in. It’s a great occasion to meet new friends, and keep in touch with old ones.

    Terence Seah

    Annie Loh

  33. Hi Pearl @50 & Lily @#51,

    Thanks for the replies.

I am afraid I have to ‘elak’ this request. There are many others more talented than me. I am only used to writing “dry” reports for ‘dry and shrivelled old men without any sense of humour’.
Sorry for belated reply. Have to wash all the blood from my body lah.

Wishing both of you all the best for your Autumn Night.

    Break a leg, ladies. Bravo.

    T

  34. Hi Terence,

Please include me in this ONIC event.

    ?????????????
    ???????
    ?????????Jacobs Creek?hic…?
    ???????
    ????,????

Joy Chuang, 200 paper lanterns to be put up (#55), wow! Standing outside the fence and swaying with them in the breeze will absolutely soar temperature… possibly catch fire, hee…

Geraldine #29. That’s very romantic. One woman, one man, one lantern and holding hands…

  35. Hi Charles,

No need elak. Drama is all for fun and able to laugh at yourself. Any kind of writing is drama materials and hey..dry shrivelled old men are ‘character’ actors!

Wash all the blood from your body?
    You just chopped someone up?
    Is it another ‘curry murder?

  36. Hi PearlW #63, and participating members,

We have no videographer in most of our events. But, let’s ask around. Any body likes to be a videographer? You should have a video camera too.

And, to everybody who is coming,
Please take this opportunity to meet new friends, and catch up with those whom you have met before. The fun is to try to converse in the best Mandarin we know. See you.

    Terence Seah

  37. Hi participating members to “One nite in Chinatown”,

Can I ask those who are fluent in Mandarin to give some examples on what to say when we meet one another during the event in Mandarin. like how are you? It’s been a long time since we last met. My name is Terence. It’s nice meeting you for the first time.

    Not only, words to communicate.

Someone, please share and explain how to greet one another, with two hands clapsed together, and what are some of the proper greeting words in Mandarin.

Remember the SHC hug. Of course, if you do know one another, the SHC hug will be great. If you dont know the other person, I guess offering your two hands clasped together would make the other person feel comfortable.

See you then. I am now thinking of fire crackers, and the noisy lion dance.

For this event, we have Janet Chan who is leading and hosting the song and music segment in “One nite in Chinatown”. Well, I am hoping that we will have a good two hour entertainment of pure song, music and singing. Thank you Janet. For those who have not met Janet, her picture is on the top left corner of this website. Please give her all the support. So, come, sing, and dance.

    Terence Seah

  38. Prologue to One Night In Chinatown?

    Music blares; ribbing compares;
    Sexy singers rocking; the crowd gawking;
It’s the rousing street getai show! :)

    Itinerant vendors draw near;
    Ice-cream, steamed peanuts, kueh tutu;
Business is brisk with so many people here.

    In the firmament, the round moon beams;
    Twittering magpies a celestial bridge forming;
The Cowherd and the Maiden are approaching.
It’s their annual date, and the magpies facilitate.

    Romance is in the warm sultry air;
Prowling Romeo sees a lady fair.
    Mid-Autumn is lunar Valentine’s day,
So he whistles. Startled, Beauty hurries away.

    One night in Chinatown in mid-Autumn;
    Lanterns galore – that’s the decor;
    Oldsters crooning about the moon;
    Mooncake nibbling; Chinese tea sipping;
All mortals are out celebrating! :)

    Love the lantern banner!!!

Absolutely beautiful. Last year’s colorful lotus flowers were to die for and this year is just as awesome.

    Mwah, darling.

  40. Hi Dolly

????! got the date mixed up.????!. I just asked a friend if the once-a-year meet was in mid Autumn and she said yes! Thanks for pointing out. :)

About ?? story – how did she get banished to the moon? Any idea?

    Glad you like the poem.

    Cheers,

  41. Hi Geraldine #76

I originally wrote “cool crisp air”. Then i remembered there isn’t any air-conditioning and S’pore is hot and humid, so quickly changed the phrase. Luckily, otherwise you won’t be able to feel romantic… lol!

  42. Hi Oi Cheng

Kindly include Wendy Koh for this event.
I’m helping to post on her behalf; somehow her post didn’t show up.

    Regards
    Peggy

  43. Hi Terence

May Peh is introduced by me to join SHC. Her full name is Peh Bee Huah. She submitted her merbership application on 14/7/2011 and was acknowledged by you on the same day.

May I know whether her membership has been approval or not.

  46. Hi Dolly #84
TQ. Now i vaguely remember one version of the Chang’er folk tale.

Yes, it’s a good idea to narrate the folktale at the event. Very meaningful. :)

  47. I just noticed a spelling error in the poem (#73).
1st line…the word ‘compares’ should be spelt ‘comperes’

This new verse will replace verse 3 of the poem:

    In the firmament, the round moon beams;
    Immortal Chang’er, isolated and lonely,
With only the stars and a bunny for company,
    Happily watches earthlings’ gaiety.

  48. Terence,

Cindy Foo, my classmate and long time friend is coming to join in the FUN. Cindy is a new member and is her first SHC event. She is a quiet gal and soft spoken, so different from me…hehehe, will encourage her to introduce herself in the forum. :)

  53. We have about one month more to “One night in Chinatown” event.

This week, Boon Liang and Daniel Chan are planning to test the sound system for the evening.

A separate wireless sound system would be set up, away from the stage, as a standby for adhoc annoucement. Dan Huang would be bringing this equipment on the day of the event.

Oi Cheng has been collating the registration and payment. Please do assist to make payment before 15 Aug 2011.

For those who would be setting up stalls, we have still not heard from you. If you are, please let us know. There will be no adhoc setting on the day itself. We have also to inform the venue owner in advance.

    Terence Seah

  54. Hi Sally,
Kindly note that our current system do not accept 2 memberships’ registration sharing 1 email address unless they are registered as couple, ie husband and wife. Hence, for Lola’s case, registration would not be considered approved which I believed that she did not rec’d any notification from the Admin. Pls get her to register again with another email address. Understanding much appreciated and inconveniences caused must regretted.

    Cheers.. Dolly

  60. Dear organisers of One Night in Chinatown

Yo, it seems that SHC is going all out to promote Mandarin in this event. Even leading to the event, videos of ‘old’ Chinese songs are on the website. Even though I’m Chinese & do know some of these songs, but I can help wondering how do our non-Chinese members feel?

Also, like to know if the music/songs on that nite is/are going to be all yester-years (50’s/60’s/70’s)?

My apologies first, if I did step on anyone’s toes with my comments. Just asking questions which, I believe, many members might like to know.

    Lydia L L Soh

  61. Sorry, like to correct one mistake in my previous comment. I meant “I can’t” (instead of “can”) help wondering how do our non-Chinese members feel?

    LS

  62. Hi Lydia #130,

SilverHairsClub has many events. Most of our events are in English, catering to the vast majority of members who are fluent in English. However, we have not had events in other languages or dialects.

Themed events are designed to draw groups of individuals together, focused on making our activities fun and meaningful. “One night in Chinatown” is just one of our many theme events. I like to encourage more members to come up and organise more such events.

Depending on the theme, we try to stay as close as possible to the concept. In “One night in Chinatown”, we have chosen Mandarin as the language. At first, I did think of allowing Cantonese, Hakka, Hokkien, ….. But, finally, I decide to make this an all Mandarin event. All members are encouraged to attend, and perhaps organised a similar one in other languages or dialects. You can be sure, these events will be just as fun.

For this event, all committee members have been advised to stay as close as possible to All Mandarin. However, at the discretion of each of the leaders, other languages and dialects can be used.

I am not sure how successful this event will be. In fact, I do look at the attendees list to see who’s coming and who’s not coming. This will be a good learning experience for future events.

As for me, I don’t speak Mandarin. But, I do think “One night in Chinatown” will be fun, memorable and romantic.

    Terence Seah

  63. Hi Terence

Tks for your explanation. I do see where you are coming from in organising this event. But better to put our ears to the ground – let’s hear it from the non-Chinese & OCBCs.

    So is/are the music/songs on that nite, going to be all yester-years (50’s, 60’s & 70’s)?

    A ‘grinder’ by nature,
    Lydia Soh

  64. One transaction on 13.8.11 and two on 14.8.11 through ATR.

    Have a nice day!

  65. Hi Oi Cheng,

Pls also note that I had just made a $10 payment on behalf of Ronnie Sow at Marine Terrace Transaction Ref No. 9026.

  68. Dear Oi Cheng,

I have transferred $10.00 to your a/c at around 6.15pm at the MAS ATM machine for Cindy Wee. Please check because the machine didn’t print out a transaction receipt….I think no paper??? Just wonder if your bank record will show my name as in the case of ibanking?

    Ah Nee

  69. Hi Jessica,
Please register your presence, and make payment.
We had a planned target for 50 pax. I am surprised at the numbers coming. But, I shall discuss with others in the committee very soon on what to do.

    Hi Tim,
Thank you for the two boxes of moon-cakes. I am sure the lady on the moon will be happy to try your cakes.
    Terence Seah

  70. Why is she on the moon?

She actually wanted political asylum. But when they saw her act – a pot she held to lick n tickle – they shook their heads, straightjacketed her and locked her up there in that solitary asylum where she shines as a solitaire.

She’s happy feeding on mineral puffs and curry water.

She will be pleased to learn that as early as September – 15th Sep – that Indian gentleman freed from his shackles – will join her. Then, maybe she gets to taste roti prata mooncake with egg whites and black pepper on an occasion better than Mid-Autumn when she meets her Awesome.

    ??“HOMECOMING” ???????????“?????”?????????

  71. Hi Terence & Oi Cheng

I am at Margaret Soo’s request to help her register as she is unable to log in. Pls kindly include her in the name list.

Margaret mentioned that she already made paymt and has informed Terence by email.

    June Koh

  72. Two transactions made on 14.8.11 through ATR still not claimed.

If you have problem logging in, please ask your friends to help you enter a comment here.

    Much appreciated.

  73. Hi Dolly,

As we had spoken before, let us finalise the name of this event, in both Chinese and English. Can you share the name title with all of us.

    Terence Seah

  74. Terence,
I did sent u an email earlier with rgds to the name of this event. Most of the members prefer a short n precise name title so that it can be easily remembered. So my proposed suggestion wuld as Excite ! Things – One Nite in Chinatown
???? – ?????” Of cos, I oso welcome other suggestions from other members as well and Terence will select the most appropriate 1 lor… Cheers… Dolly

  75. Hi everybody,

In order not to dwell too much time on the theme name, I have decided to stick to “One night in Chinatown”. Thank you for your contribution.

We have got into a good problem, and that is we have more participants than what we originally planned for. I guess we will readjust the number of pax with the venue owner at a later date. Thank you Ah Nee for keeping track on food. This will be a simple buffet.

We do have some concerns, and that is the possibility of rain. But, other than this, we shall stop at paid 80 pax or if we dont reach 80 pax, whatever the number paid by/on 31 Aug 2011. The cost will be $10/pax.

For those singing, please remember to liaise with Janet to submit your disc on time.

    Thank you everybody.

    Terence Seah

  76. I cannot understand why we keep calling it “…..CHINATOWN”, then have the party in Kovan.

If the intention of the party is to make everyone speak, greet and communicate in Mandarin, then the accurate name should be “MANDARIN INTERCOURSE”

Since you are having the party on the day before Mooncake festival and having activities inline with this cultural festival. I suggest you call it Mid-Autumn Festival in Mandarin(which I don’t know).

I am having my own Mid-Autumn Festival party with my great-grand nieces and nephews on the same day, as I do every year. They are all over 45 days old.

  78. Hi Tim Liu + Tian Soo,

Have to agree that maybe we should drop out the “ChinaTown” as the event is not going to be held in Chinatown. Anyway “ChinaTown” is a name initially coined by the angmo. It may be good to have an appropriate name to reflect the theme of the event.

Just my one cent worth of comments.

  79. Oh! oh! what happen to the layout of the post??

Terence, ref #149, is Margaret Soo’s membership ok? Please confirm so I can update. Thank you.

  80. Haha, Steven-N, I just wanted to make a bit of noise. Whatever the event calls itself – Chinatown, Little India, BalekGeylang – I am ok. What is important is, every performer will do her/his best and the audience does nt expect Heavenly Kings/Queens visitng Kovan and will take the performance kindly.

So, Margaret Soo has signed up for this event. Nice.

She joined in the recent durian trip and bounced the surians like the best in NBA. She has been walking with the Walkists for many times already so she is certainly a SHCian.

  82. Hi Oi Cheng
I have already tfr $10 to POSB117-00132-6 on sun.

Also, I can help in the registration , no problem Earlier I read the email u sent me, I asked when and where as I forgot what activity I signed up and paid for. Spent last 1 hour trying to locate this.

Sori for my late response as I do not go on SHC website everyday, only occasionally. But now slowly trying to make it a habit to do so. Otherwise, I keep missing and forgetting function/activity that I have signed up for.

    My apology.

    Agnes

  83. Hi Oi Cheng,
Please register Frankie Wong for this event too. A ITR was done this morning. Kindly acknowledge transaction reference (6974589268).

  84. Thank you Tim, StevenN and Tian Soo, for your suggestions on the theme name of “One night in Chinatown”. Your suggestions make sense.

Next time, when we have similar events, I shall ask you for your contribution. I look forward to seeing you at the event.

And for members who are coming, Janet Chan has pieced together 15 singers with a total of 22 songs. Depending on your preferences, and if the music suits you, you can also dance to the songs and music. So, bring along your second-hand dancing shoes. Estimate time 1 hr and 55 mins.

Games wise, Dolly has worked out 2 games. This will take about half an hour. So, again be prepared to participate. Bring along your spare underwear, smelly socks, one 5 cent coins, etc. Oops, she said the games are a secret.

  89. Hi Tim,

Since you are in such a sentimental mood, we shall play this song for you. Are you planning to sing and entertain us this full moon night? I realise this song is sung as a duet.

    Terence Seah

  90. You know what, Terence, I always have a problem with you and you always give me a big headache.

You’re a TeoJew, and I suppose that’s a Chinese dialect group. And it ends there for you being Chinese.

So my problem and headache is, if I were to communicate with you in Chinese here (which is the Mandarin thread), my problem and headache goes to you, and that’s not what the kind me will do.

Yes, I think I will be doing 2 songs, both duets, with my on-stage Lobo Cai. Cant say more here as she’s very fierce and has slammed a gag order on me. Suffice to say that since she’s a good animal trainer, and patron of the Obedient Hubbies Club, I think i will be honed sufficiently to entertain.

I am ready to take on the comperes if they like to do some small talks on stage.

  91. Hi Oi Cheng,

So I confirm to register for the event and would transfer my due of $10/= via POSB savings account today or ASAP.

    Thank you very much.

  94. Sockie

  95. Hi Registrar

Please take note that Kent Chan had made payment of $10 via ATM transfer Ref.2549 – kindly acknowledge receipt.

    Thanks.

  96. Fantastic, with the effort of one another, we now have 80 persons participanting in “One night in Chinatown”. We will close the numbers by 31 Aug.

Hi Pearl, can you please give me an update on the drama via email. I have not been able to reach your email. A week ago, I met Frisna at the airport, and she gave me an insight into the efforts being put in by the drama performers. I appreciate the effort, and I am sure the audience will be pleasantly surprised.

One stall holder will be selling ice-cream. He is a cheerful old man. So, do watch out for him and buy an old fashion icecream from him. If you have met him before on the streets, please let us know. The only time I know he wont come that night, is the dry ice has melted the night before.

Another stall holder is planning to make fortune cookies. She has no problems with writing the love notes; but she cannot insert the notes into the cookies. Again, look out for her, and buy a fortune cookie from her. Would be fine; but cookies are limited.

The flower girl has quit. She wont be selling, as she has decided to go back to her hometown in Chengdu. So sad.

Ah Nee has prepared a small but nice buffet. As we have not sitting room, you will need to eat with a plate on the left hand and a fork on the right hand.

When you come that evening, please bring along your name tag, which should have your first and last name clearly written on it. Register at 5.30pm with Oi Cheng and her team. We should have enough time for chatting with one another from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. Do spend some time with other parents; and share pictures of that potential someone who could be suitable for your sons or daughters. Get to know others who may be into TaiChi, dancing or simply some time out for tea sessions. Dont forget your traditional Chinatown wear. Slippers are ok; but you cannot dance with them.

Thomas Loh and Janie Leong, our co-comperes are working hard to ensure a good continuous evening. Timing is tight, as we have to finish by 10.30pm, so that the residents can sleep early and wait up the next morning early too. Many members know Thomas Loh, but have you met the cheerful smiling Janie Leong?

For those who have been having sleepless night preparing for this event, thank you again.

    Terence Seah

  97. All of us have dreams, and to make dreams come true, we have to perservere. I hope some of your events and projects can come true out of dreaming.

Dreaming is something we do from time to time. We of a “100% Mandarin event”. There was no idea. Then, we talked about it, chat and dream further. Many members contributed to the idea. Janet Chan loves singing; she pulls in Boonliang to help with the equipment. BL pulls in Daniel to help with the equipment. Dolly then thought of a mini Mandarin evcent, and out of this, appears Lily Ho, whom I have noticed to be fluent in Mandarin. So, she agrees to accept the role of giving the welcome and closing speech. Meantime, Pearl Wong, out of somewhere, of course, started to entice members with her drama skills. She drew in a group, and out of it, a drama item came out.

Then, the dream got deeper. The old man thought of selling ice cream. Another dreamer thought of selling fortune cookies. Many members share and talk about what they can do. Some ideas work and some dont.

We have a concept of “Raising hands”. We needed mandarin comperes. Two kind members thought they would give it a try – Thomas and Janie. They knew they are in into hard work; but for SilverHairsClub and its members, they took the challenge. Even, Tim Liu offered to be a standby compere; but the safest offer he can give us without confusing anybody, was he would bring two boxes of expensive moon cakes, not forgetting he will be trying to show off his singing bird skills.

Many SHCians are singers. They love to dream and make singing a part of their dream. So, why not, singing mandarin songs. Janet worked hard to piece together a team; I may not know all the participants, but I have heard of their interest. We get to see them next month.

So, different event names surfaced. A theme idea would be easier on the brains. So, “One night in Chinatowna” was created. This is not the dream of one single person. It’s an event, created by the dreams, ideas, suggestions, arguments, putting hands up, experience and willingness to entertain and be entertained; all by SilverHairsClub members.

So, if I can give a suggestion to all budding EOs, you must have a dream, and sharing it with members. Dont give up along the way; even after you wake up from the dream. Write whatever down. Go into SilverHairsclub.com. Once you have all the ideas and help from members, structure the theme, and if members can see your vision, they will give you all the support. But, if you give up, after a few weeks, and after a few negative feedback, there goes the dream.

I just heard from Oi Cheng that the registration desk team has been formed. They are Agnes Low, Perilla Liew, May Peh and of course Oi Cheng. I heared Wendy is considering too. So, to all participants, when you come with your name tag, say hello to Agnes, Perilla, May and Wendy. You can tell who they are by looking at their nametags too. Look at the list at who’s coming, and get to meet them.

To make the event more exciting, I have been tryng to schedule this event in my diary. As of now, I have to be in Chennai that week; and it is likely I will miss the event by one day. But, the show must go on. Luckily, we have this Club Manager by the name of Dolly Lim. I can always depend on her; but she is a bit of a nut cracker. Better to have a nut than a cracker.

Each of the committee will do their best for you; so you have to contribute your share too. Come in the oldest traditional Chinatown wear you can think off. For the men, look out for the blue, the singlet, the taokay shirt and pants, the belts, the hair, and the shoes. The girls will be looking out for you.

And for the ladies, take out your mother’s gift to you, maybe the hair pin, the glittering belt, the hair styles. Dont come in your day to day office wear, t-shirts or jeans. Give it more thought. Take down 2 kgs over the next two weeks. The boys will be looking out for you.

Afterall, that what some of us do in our young er days, when we go to Chinatown. I am a bad example; but if you are into Mandarin, give it a go that night. Let’s not laugh at one another.

Thank you for collectively putting this theme event together. It’s now “One night in Chinatown”. Tian Soo, I hope you can make it to this event. And those who havent considered, consider it now. We close registration by 31 Aug, or else Dolly will be standing right in front of you.

    Terence Seah

  98. Hi Terence,

This must be the hottest thread! So many comments! And so many people coming! WOW !

I am part of the drama/sing/dance team. The excitement is building up! I just spoke to Pearl, and we were just wondering.. would it be possible to arrange a rehearsal for the budding actors/actresses/dancers/singers? After all, we’re not professional entertainers, and a stage rehearsal could come in useful. If not possible, it’s ok too. We’ll just turn semi-professional after this event… kekeke! No need for rehearsal.. just go on stage, anytime, anywhere… ha.ha..!

Thanks for dreaming .. it’s your ability to dream dreams and thinking out of the box .. that SHC is still vibrant, and keeping everyone excited. We’re having fun! There is life after 45!

Do make it a point to turn up for this event, ok? We hope you can reschedule your flights, to be back on time. You want to watch the SHC Drama Team’s debut show?

    Cheers!

  99. Hi Terence,

Just read your email this morning and thanks for writing so late last nite.
Also, thanks to your immediate respond after my reply.

Everything is fine tho couldnt say its that professional but we are all trying our best esp. the singing events which many of us are so reliant on the ktv lyrics, hope those watching will bear with us our mistakes, if any.

Thanks to your dreams of ‘One Night in Chinatown’ as we dream along with you to make it happen. Its all the support of SHC members that these dreams come true – an event so painstakingly organised by some and enjoyed by all who believe and are proud to participate one way or another.

    WHOOH … YIPPEEEEE!!!

  100. Well, when you first approached me to be 1 of 2 comperes, you couldnt name who the co-compere is so I demurred.

Janie and Thomas are good chaps, and they shd be competent. In case they go for toilet breaks and dont come back, I will step in and step on some toes with my brand of loose talk and litany from my dictionary.

It will be a crying shame if you cant fly home for this Chinatown Nite, touted to be SHC’s Event of the Year.

Initially, anyone who pays up after 15/8 will have to pay more. Knowing you, you just like to see big crowd of happy people coming together. Money is never an issue with you. Great !

    Now, you can be greater.

Helming so many companies all over the world, you will certainly qualify to run for the Presidency. These companies – with paid-up capitals in rupees, ringgits, rupiahs, pesos and Sing $ – all add up in numbers to comfortably cross the $100m capitalisation needed.

SHC has some 5,000 members who, together with their families – and relatives, colleagues, neighbours, friends, acquaintances – – will come to some 1,000,000 people, giving you almost 40% of votes.

This is one dream you must work on.

And with you taking the top job, there wont be any quarrel by people over the lease land and public space for functions bcos with you s the unifying force and with so many ideas benefitting the masses, the land and spaces will be yours to stage shows for everyone.

Then Lydia-C wil get to do her drama, sing and dance every nite. Everywhere. And then she will quickly mature as a professional and wont ask for any rehearsal anymore.

  101. For the first time, we have an event which focuses on Mandarin, rather than on English. To kickstart the evening, Lily Ho will give the opening speech in Mandarin. For new members, Lily is the lady on the left. She joined SHC in Jan 2006, so she is familiar with the club’s culture; and I have always found her supportive of the club’s objective, the club and its members.

Sure, she is still attractive, and she brings elegance to SilverHairsclub. One of her greatest loves is dancing. That’s all I know.

3 more days to closing the registration to this event “One night in Chinatown”.

    Terence Seah

  102. Terence

Absolutely love this new song from this very sweet singer. Your type and my type. Totally.

The angelic face with minimal makeup (love, love it) and amazing vocal!

Oh yes, you are spot on regarding Lily being very supportive, attractive and elegant. Bet she has to fight off unwanted attention like her daughter.

p/s Are you sure that’s all you know? Kekekekee. Am I dead, Lily?

  103. Ya GT

U are sooooo dead! Wat are u insinuating huh?

Anw, thks for the compliments. Am returning the same to u PLUS 1 more adjective – SEXY. I remember how the way u dance ……. Wow, oozing sxx appeal all the way. U know, guys can get wet dreams just watching u dance? Wat a pity u are so far away! Wud be good to have your presence more often. Any plan to visit us soon?

Btw, is Ah Fook still performing? Heeheehee…. :)

  104. Yes Lily

I am very calm now since I am dead for sure. Please make it quick and no pain. Thank you.

Your compliments to me are a wower! Didn’t realize I ooze anything let alone sex appeal plus getting wet dreams just watching me dance? Oh dear! Hahahahahaha.

Now that Girlfren Socks has a virgin thingy, I am seriously considering a trip back to support though I can’t line dance but enjoy watching. Will just drink mineral water and talk to dirty old man.

If I do, we will be able to meet up and dance the nite away, drink the nite away……….

Like the place we went for dinner at Clarke Quay. Want to go there again and must go clubbing after.

You can finish me up after that. I’ll go with a smile.

Ah Fook performs great; he is awesome. We can’t get enough
of each other – the euphoric stage. Kekekekekee.

  105. Yeap GT

We’ll go to Clarke Kuay for din again but this time, a different joint and we stay on for the clubbing. Will ditch those old men and must have our Turkish ice cream!!

Better get off this thread before fairy goodmother uses his wand….wonk?…wank?

    Nite2..zzzzzzzzzzzz

  106. ?????????????

    ??????????????????????????????????

    ????????????“????”???????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????

    ??????????????????????????????“????????”?“???KINGKONG”?“?????”?“?????????”?“?????”? “???????”?????????

    ??????”???“??????????

  107. Sure, Lily. We’ll try something different; have our gelato, smokies and of course drinks (mocktail for you) and then club the nite away to burn the fat whilst in the zone.

As long as we abide by the club’s tabboos, whisky fairy will not use his wonkie (long and hard) to zap us. Kekeke.

    Hugs

  108. Hi “One night in Chinatown participants”,

I have been trying to reschedule my plans for my India trip next week. Unfortunately, the programs are too tight; and I am not able to make back in time for the event.

As such, Dolly Lim, Club Manager, will take over as EO from today, and continue to ensure a fun and memorable event for everyone on Sep 10.

    Have fun everybody.

    Terence Seah

  109. Terence, you have lost your will. Not that one which says to whom you bequeath your used condoms and soiled underpants to.

    When there’s a will, there’s a way.

If you still cant find a way out of your schedule despite fixing the Nite’s date many round moons ago, then I see a wheeler Terence sans a will.

C’mom, rediscover your will and find your way out. It’s your Nite in Chinatown !

  110. Wow .. ‘One Nite In Chinatown’ is indeed drawing very very near –
those in drama & singing are spending lots of time practising, rehearsing.
If only the non-performers know how much effort & time was put in just to help entertain SHC members for a nite of fun for just 15 – 30mins.

If not simply obliging Terence in keeping SHC vibrant & the fun of entertaining, its just not worth all the critics, belittling & hurtful remarks thats been airing around. One even said nobody bothers about their singing if they are not Theresa Teng, Anita Sarawak or divas. Some start questioning the drama play without reading the synopsis here. Some expects plots to entertain their expectations but they forgot why this ‘old couple – Mr & Mrs Huang’ are celebrating MCF with their 3 ‘long-lived-overseas’ daughters & 2 grand-daughters becos they are now back for good. Its a happy occassion and their thoughts for the night are ‘be happy & have great quality time together as a family again’.

The 3 daughters who had been away for more or less than 20yrs are not about to tell all their life stories this nite as they have the rest of their lives here with their parents to slowly unwind to them on other days.

I believe people with gracious hearts supports more than belittling –
knowing that all who came together to perform are simply ordinary folks and not professionals!!

  111. Hi Pearl,

Sorry to hear your group have been the object of snide remarks. I sympathise with you as I well know your frustration. Unfortunately it won’t be the last too. There will always be some egotistical losers who only know how to criticise.

Best you just ignore them as most will know them in due course.

After reading your comments, I was going to go just to show my support for a worthy effort like yours but alas I just realised the registration is closed.

I had not registered earlier because my putong hua is approaching zero, “ting pu tong” is what I always say in China.

Not to belabour my excuse but will support your next play even if it is in Talibanish. Apologies. But just to let you know there are many who support you even though they may be silent.

    Cheers

  112. Hi Charles C,

Thks very much for your consolation & support, its very comforting and I had to thk you right away even as I’m rushing for our rehearsal with some of us at 7.30 tonite. I hope to put across the post to people like that to have a heart instead of harsh words.

I dont think Terence or Dolly will put a barrier on you for that night, please come as I like to meet you and thank you personally. Appreciate you writing in and thks to all the silent supporters whoever you are. Will meet 10 Sept!

    Be There!!
    pearl.

  113. Dear Pearl
The remark was made figuratively in my private email to the working committee of this event. The intention was to emphasise the need to cut down on solo singing because YOU asked for 1 hour show time. I wanted to emphasise on the time constraint and to secure more time for the drama group. It was not done with malicious intent towards the singers. Instead of making known your dissent in the email, you choose to complain here. Is this an act of sowing discord amongst the working committee and publicising it? All I was trying to do was to give more importance to you and your group, being the 1st drama program SHC ever had.

    Charles Chua
Check the facts first before you comment.

  114. C’mon, Pearl-W, cheer up.

I have heard much of the hard work and long hours your Act Group and you have put into giving us a drama to remember and a nite to cherish.

Even society is polarised but we can also look at it as pluralised. Each is entitled to his/her own say and opinion. Even dogs are given the animal right to bark.

Enjoy your rehearsal tonite. Yes, the key word is “enjoy”.

On the Nite itself, come to enjoy. And I will.

It’s only when we want to enjoy what we do can we find the impetus and mood to infect and enjoin the audience to the infactuation of joy.

But if performers become affected by silly whispers which will never make it to the audience at large, it’s unlikely they will not feel nervous. Then how to enjoy like that?

Yes, folks, come in hordes. I dont think any registered/paid SHCian who will be treated to a buffet will mind as, for practical reason, there’s no way one can, nay, even think of, cordon the stage off to the public.

I shall bring 1 more box of mooncakes to share.

  115. Charles, Pearl,
I am sure that both of you will definitely have other opportunities in other SHC events to meet each other. As far as this event is concerned, it was closed for registration as well as payment on Aug 31’11 2359 hr which Oi Cheng had stated very clearly in her earlier comment.

I also wished dat I can relax this R&R abit but cant as by doing so, this event will definitely invite gatecrashers which I seriously do not hope to see. I too also hope 2 have a chance to watch both drama and singing instead of being ‘Sergent Major’ catching gatecrahers leh..

So kind understanding much appreciated from all members concerned… Cheers.. Dolly

  116. Hi Dolly,

I was not hinting to have a freebie in the Chinatown night.
Only to explain my absent support.

I know the registration is closed. I am not so hard up to have to engineer a freebie.

Like your buddy says, just stick to the facts.

    And also to Lily,

My comment was a generalisation. I am not privy to your emails. So any reference to ‘egotistical losers who only know how to criticise’ was also generalised. There is no factual comment made by me. You don’t have to feel victimised. After all everyone knows you are not egoistic nor a loser.

Your barb was unnecessary. Otherwise everytime one makes a posting they have to myriad checks to make. Most of us don’t have the time for this.

  117. Charles

What do you mean my barb was unnecessary? Sure it was.

I can accept that Pearl have misunderstood me since she doesn’t know me and we have only met for the first time last evening. But you and I have been good friends for some time now, and friends can chide each other no?

Besides me, there are Boon Liang, Thomas, Janie, Dolly and Ah Nee – all of whom are more than acquaintances to you. Is it myriad check when you can easily contact any one of us to find out what’s going on? Instead, you chose to hear from 1 person whom you’ve not even met and add fuel to fire.

Yeah right, you don’t have the time like many of us. I forgot! See you at the next makan time, in Singapore, Shanghai or Perth.

  118. Hey Guys

Am shocked to read this ‘bickering’ over some misunderstanding to begin with.

As I know Dolly, Lily and Charles except Pearl, I don’t think anyone of you are out to make life/things difficult for anyone for the event.

Pearl, whatever frustrations or grievances you may have, you should have brought it up with the committee (whoever they may be) rather than airing out here.

I am not siding anyone. This is what I would have done and if it falls on deaf ears, I’ll just make sure the drama group gives it 120% simply to show that they are good. Even if they are not, it’s providing entertainment for the event and everyone should take it in stride. That’s being professional despite being amateurs.

The Lily and Dolly I know are not the types to make sure anyone fails. In fact, they want everything to turn out well.

I was the co-owner on our Shanghai Castle Cabaret Nite and Lily gave me useful info as my other co-owner and I had to fly in to rehearse and on the actual nite, she was there informing us, letting us know what they had arranged etc. Very helpful.

Charles, Dolly absolutely does not think of you as a free-loader. Why would you even think that?

My above comments are just so people I consider friends will not be at each other’s throats.

    Sigh…….

  119. Thanks, Geraldine, thank you very much for the comment n also glad dat u hv make my point clear enuff. You definitely make my day alot happier now… Cheers.. :)

Charles, to me, this issue is closed.

    Regards… Dolly

  120. I said my piece after reading Pearl-W’s #201 as there’re SHCians capable of being naughty. Pearl-W and her group have invested time and sweat. They deserve encouragement.

Believeing that she was insinuated, Lily-H explained herself @ #204 which I got to read now. Her points are valid. It’s not an individual’s concert. There must be time for everyone.

So, going by these 2 exchanges, it was a misunderstanding easily resolved thru a meet-up of the 2 protagonists which occurred last nite. The dust wd have settled this morning.

For Charles-C to speak his mind was fair too. Nobody shd stay quiet in the closet if there was a perceived wrong. SHC wont be stronger for that.

    Fairness.

Is it fair to let in SHCians who havent registered and paid for the Event? Ostensibly, it’s not fair but there’s a practical problem bcos of the openness of the venue.

The Kovan stage onlooks the public. There’s no way we can cut out non-paying people – members or oetherwise. And that Terence actually removed the punitive $5 extra on SHCians registering after 15/8 speaks quite clearly that a good crowd is welcome.

    So?

So, stand bouncers there to enforce?

Oh Kim Kee, Loh Nguk Fong, Lim Ban Lim, Lim Swee (botak) Chin had their lives cut short under a torrent of gunfire. My mentor/hero in school and later friend Tua Bui Loo died early this month under mysterious circumstances. Dead men bounces no more.

Very sad if Dolly has to bounce around to ensure non-paying folks have a sense of proportion. She too has every right to be part of the Show, to let her hair down and enjoy it. Not pulling her hair, frazzled as she chases people away.

This event has to be funded, and the $ comes from SHCians who hv paid. Those who hadnt, do please understand that while you’re welcome to help create the festive atmosphere, there’re privileges for paying members. Be your good self. It’s not nice for anyone to tell you off, or yourself feel nice to be told off.

Now, go buy a copy of today’s ST.

You’ll see a very sad, glum face. Not many will put a face like that on the front page.

Go ask him what he knows that we dont.

  121. Wow Wow Wow – what’s this a big hoo-hah?!
I just got home from searching for some lapel microphones so that the ‘actors’ can be heard – but need buy the whole system…well, expensive lor.
    And i saw this….

All I said were facts and I felt nobody need belittle anyone when all they want is to participate the events as encouraged as always by Terence n club members.I did not name names neither was I frustrated, upset or complaining – I just felt it isnt right. Whether private mails or open thread – its hurting!!

As for my drama, I have no issues with the time slot but I would appreciate being asked if I can cut the time instead of ‘why would pearl need 1hr, unless she had something up her sleeves, blah blah…” Yes, that’s a private mail, so anyone can talk down on others to the whole committee? Whats the diff?

And Lily, am I glad to have met you last night. I read your post before arriving at Kovan and upon Dolly’s introduction, I extended a friendly handshake as I had no qualms of whatever happens. The night was gay as we fooled around the sound system and glad you saw the not so perfect rehearsal.

    pearl.

  122. “The pen is mightier than the sword”. Let’s change it to, “The keyboard is mightier than the sword.” Being able to write – or type well – is a two-way sword. Simply put, you can poke as well as be poked.

I have learnt to refrain from writing and I also learnt that it is not what you write that matters but who writes it. The same text by different people will receive significantly different “barbs”, if any. In any case, it is painful to always search for words that are legally, politically, socially, morally, religiously and yes, sexually correct. Why bother to write at all?

I am joining the fray because I have had spent 10 hours or more at Kovan, even before this event dispense its first chicken-wing. Like Tim, I just want to help to defuse the explosives after watching nervously on the sideline. Either we do it here or call the bomb squad to standby on Sept 10 (joking lah……take it easy).

We start on the premise that EVERYBODY who said what they had said was with the intention to make this event the best ever. We have a common goal albeit different approaches. Overwhelming is an understatement, as far as participation is concerned. Nobody wants it to be colourless. Perhaps in anxiety and earnest, a wrong word or phrase may have led to misunderstanding. Let us forgive and forget.

I must apologise that I don’t sing well. I bet that some “actors” in the play will forget their lines. So what? This is the moonlight night we choose to bask in. I believe many come because of the friendship, the bonding and yes the moon-cakes (Thank You Tim). Watching a good performance and listening to clever articulation is a bonus. Let’s not ruin the night simply because of a difference of opinions.

I have said my piece, for better or for worse. I remain a “nobody”. The moon represents my heart – bright and pure. HOPE it represents everybody’s.

  123. Pearl Wong

You seem to be selectively nick picking out what I said that do not go down well with you but completely ignore what I’ve tried to do for your drama group. I noticed also, you like to bring Terence’s name into the picture.

You said that “I have no issues with the time slot but I would appreciate being asked if I can cut the time…..” implying that nobody asked you? Please, Thomas was checking with you couple of times while we were at the meeting but you insisted you need 1 hour (all those at the meeting can verify this).

Originally, drama was given only 20 mins by Terence. So I wrote that email trying to convince Terence to increase your time slot to 40 mins and added :

“….. I failed to see why 1 hour is required. Unless, it has an excellent plot or seriously captivating, a 1 hour open-air drama is too draggy. Audience would get bored and starts chatting amongst themselves. From what I heard, the ‘actual’ play itself is only 20mins. Why then, do the drama group need 1 hour? I was told that they need time to set up and/or taking down the stage prop, etc. But what do they expect the audience to do during these times? That was why I suggested having the games slots before and after, for this purpose. Even with narration and introduction of the cast, one-by-one, 40mins should be more than suffice. Anything more is just going to cause the lost of audiences’ attention. Unless Pearl has got some surprises up in her sleeve…..? Let’s be open about it. Otherwise, see if she can cut the time further.”

There! No need for you to pick bits and pieces of what I said.

Terence already announced that the time slot for drama will be 30 mins. The record is clear and all recepients of the email can testify to it. Henceforth, I shall not comment any further on this matter.

  124. I had been having pain in my right hip joint, some two months ago. My son advised me to see a doctor, so I did. Doc got me to do a hip exray, and one hour later, he saw me. He kept quiet and shook his head, “No good”. Of course, I asked why, and he said “you have to do a MRI, a chest XRAY and a blood test”. I asked him when?, and he said “Tomorrow”. He suspected prostate chancer. I told him I could only make it one week later as I had to travel. Anyway, I had a blood test, a chest Xray and a MRI. It was quite fun being inside the tunnel, got thai music and a funny gong gong sound. One in a while, during the 45 mins, the scanner operator will scream at me to keep my two legs still. Obviously, I followed instructions.

Doctor couldn’t see me the next day as he was working in another hospital for one week. Gee, I couldn’t wait, so I saw another doc.

He look at the MRI scan, and asked why I was here at the hospital. He looked at the blood test results, and said that the blood tests looked fine, and there were no cancer markers. The MRI scan indicate a tear inside the joint socket. He then said he would prescribed me some pain killers, and to take them if there was pain. I felt relieved.

So, I asked him what about the chest xray. He said that if there is prostate cancer, the bones are the first to be affected, and there will be some signs where the ribs are. But he said there were 3 black dots in my chest, but cannot explain why as they were not there in my previous medical checkup.

So, off to the Xray dept, turn left, turn right and back so that they can localise the black dots.

One hour later, back to the doctor. This time, the 3 small black dots were not there. Doc said “don’t worry, come back next year”. Wah, some relief again.

While he was explaining the chest xray film, I had been noticing a big black patch on the right side of the film, but below the ribs. Aiyah, couldn’t resist asking the doc what it was?

“Oh, it’s the stomach”, said the doctor. He probably thought I was an idiot.

So, go ahead, if you feel not good about the other person, just say it. I think until next Monday, should be ok. I feel uneasy with this exchange of word.

Imagine, I felt good after leaving the hospital.

    Terence Seah

  125. Hi Janet & Judy,

I can’t wait to tell you this……last night you were asking me whether the Drama group could use the changing room at the stage of the CC multi-purpose Hall. I am glad to let you know that Michael Tan has kindly allow us to use the changing room. So the Drama group, also the Singing group, you all can use the room to doll up “swee swee” for the “One night in Chinatown”. Next week will be the big event…wow!

    Ah Nee

  126. Hi Terence, oops..need mention your name again!

I cant help mentioning your name becos –
Its you that I wrote to join SHC.
Its you that I ask permission to start my drama activity group.
Its you who will approve or disapprove of my request cos I only know you.
Its you, the EO of ‘One Night In Chinatown’.
Its you who asked me to update you regarding ‘Homecoming’.
Its you that asked me how long is my drama play. I said 20-30mins max.
Its you who always encourage us all to have fun!

Its a relief to you and a relief to all those who know that you are in the pink of health except a little tear inside your hip socket. Congratulations!!

    pearl.

  127. I thought I would not say anything but I am getting annoyed by some comments.

On the one hand “I have no qualms….” and on the other hand, a whole list of “complaints” were being voiced. Someone seems to be unaffected as claimed but she seems to be stoking the ambers to try to start the fire again.

You stormed in, projecting yourself as the Ms Congeniality and also a “victim” of unfair treatment. But who is trying to start the fire?

Come on. Back off and concentrate on what you want to do and let the show go on.

    Carly

  128. Hi Terence

Don’t know if the always calm you were anxious when going thru’ the procedures but I was certainly so while reading thru’ #216. Phew…… glad all’s well.

You are certainly gracious in allowing freedom of speech here on the post and that’s a sure good sign of aging which we should all strive for. As in all, graciousness begets.

Sad to know of your intentions for SHC and certainly don’t wish for it to come true but come what may and even if it’s premature of me doing so, I would like to dedicate this song to you now.

The Last Waltz by Engelbert Humperdinck:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orWreMGzUkQ

  129. Terence

A tear in the joint socket. Hmmmmm.

Diagnosis: wear and tear from years of intense thrusting. Thus all those hundreds of used condoms.

From now on, just lie there and have fun.

Glad that it’s not the C word.

Till next Monday? Very gracious of you. Hope we are as relieved as you when the whole ‘checkup’ is over.

  130. Hi DanielC #214,
You are not a nobody; you are somebody. Next opportunity, I shall find you another “The moon represents my heart” song.

    Hi Geraldine #221,
You do have a wordy way of embedding visions into men’s minds. I shall take your advice.

    And DaisyY 220,
Re the last waltz, it’s abit too early. I only get to hear this song, maybe 5 times, since I was borned.

    So, everybody, until Monday please.

    Terence Seah

  131. Hi Ah Nee #217,

Thanks very much to you and Mr Michael Tan for your help in allowing all singing and drama groups to use the changing room behind the stage of the hall to doll up ‘swee swee’ for this event.

    Cheers,
    Janet

  132. Hey Sweet Giraffe Steven

    It’s been so long!

You know, it took me quite a bit to understand your still atrocious cantonese pinying. Kekekekee.

Yes, yan san yao gay dor sup nin, indeed. It’s over before we know it. Am listening to Sam H right now. Bliss.

Hope to catch up with you soon.

  133. Steven-C’s cantonese says : “yan sum yow kea dor sup lean”.

The nearest I understand it in cantonese is this :

    1. ???????“??????????????????????

    ???????????????????????????“????”?????????????? KOVAN ???????????????????????

    or this :

    2. ???????”??????????“?”??”lin”).

    ???? ????????LIN??????????

    ???????????????????????????????????? LEAN LIN? ???LIN??????

    ???????????????????????????????????????????

  134. Hi Jassmine

    Good to hear from you!

Glad to make you laugh or smile……..life’s too short.

Just a dirty old cow who loves to do things to this dirty old man. Now you know why he is leaving? Kekekekeee.

Gosh, I do have a death wish.

p/s Reeli hope to meet you when I am next in town. Let me know.

  135. Terence #216
Sorry to hear about your medical problem.
I didn’t know about it until I came in to read the comments regarding the event at Kovan.
    What an interesting read!

I’m glad that there’s nothing seriously wrong with you. I know what it’s like going for an MRI, having gone for 2 myself besides a myriad of other tests. These problems come with age. It’s good to have them checked out and cleared.
    Take care and enjoy life!

Hey you guys who are ‘bickering’. Life is short. When you look back later, you will see how trivial it all is, compared to what Terence (and I, for that matter), went through.
Lighten up and smile or try to bring a smile to someone else’s face. There are many people out there, young and old, who need you to do that. Go, look for them.

  136. Janet and team, please take note…..

I have informed the Kovan CC caretaker to unlock the changing room for our use on 10 Sep from 5.30 pm to 10.00 pm. Cheers!

    Ah Nee

  137. Hi DanielC #214,

I have a song for you to celebrate your love for the moon. Hope you like it.

Hi Dolly, I cannot resist saying something, although I have handed over the EO’ship to you. It’s nice to see the audience being so spontaneous when one is performing. So, please feel free to give a hug to the singers or performers at the appropriate moment. I guess a rabbit from Tian Soo’s house would also be ok. Our flower girl has gone home, so no flowers. All up to imagination.

    Terence Seah

  138. Dear Steven Chan @ #222 and Mary Chan @ #229

I am a peace loving person and I too think that life is too short to be bickering or hurting others.

It takes very little to hurt me and make me cry but it takes a lot to annoy me.

I have said my piece and I am looking forward to my one night in Chinatown.

    Period.

    Cheers
    Carly

  139. Hi Ah Nee,
Appreciate your understanding & arrangement with Michael to open the changing room for the convenience of all participant.
    Thank you.
    Judy

  140. Hi Charles Chua

My apology for being so harsh on you. Realised now that you didn’t know I was the one being implicated. I am sorry. True friends are hard to come by. Diabolically fiend I don’t need. Don’t want to lose a good friend like you.

    Best Regards
    Lily

  141. Hi Terence

I’ve just come back from a short holiday and have not read this thread for a few days. Did not know anything abt your checkups until now.

However, I’m v happy that everything’s fine with you except for the tiny tear in your hip socket.

I wish you the v best and a speedy recovery.

However, sad to note that you are giving up your ‘fairy godmother’ role so soon.

    Cheersssssssss
    Gabriella

  142. All’s well that ends well.
Like thay say “look forward & let’s unite in common purpose”
Although I can’t be there due to prior other commitments, but I’m surely with the Drama mama group in spirit.

Everybody, enjoy yourself & have fun!!.

  143. Terence, happy to hear everything is okay with that sex machine hahaha!
Think just follow GT’s advise, trust less intensely, didn’t the song say ” I want a slow hand” hahaha
okay hv a good week ahead all, cheers !

  144. Lily #234

It takes a clear and honest mind to be able to see the right from wrong. It takes courage to admit what you consider a mistake made by yourself. And it takes a very confident person to be able to admit an error publicly and make amends.

I am proud to be your friend.

  145. Hi Terence #216

Did’nt know abt your health problem until I read this post.
Thank God & what a relief to hear you’re ok. Take good care and rest well.

During your treatment whilst in the tunnel, not bad huh they still entertain your with thai music and gong gong sound. When I went thru this in Changi Hospital many years back, whilst in the tunnel I did’nt even get the chance to hear “Majullah Singapura” hee.. Don’t marah2 (get angry) huh joking only. At this age we have to take things easy.

Just my concern, why don’t you do another checkup in Singapore to get another opinion from doctors here?

    Warmest Regards
    Hamidah

  146. Hi Lily,

Not an issue here. Glad everything is resolved. Thanks to all the peacemakers here. We are still friends and you have many friends, as can be seen here. I must remember I am too old to argue.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable and fun time together this Sat and that the weather will be great.

    Cheers

  147. Very happy that we are back to making love, not war.

Yes, we must remember we are too old to argue for the sake of it, whatever.

    Focus on our hip problem.

    Mwah to my frens.

  148. Haha Henry

Have not heard from you for a long time.

Do sing this ‘slow hand’ song to me (love it, very sexy) when we next meet.

    Take care,

  149. Hi Gerrie,

Unusual to have you up at this time of the day. So wat’s up? Blue moon in HK?

I got some Wing Wah mooncakes but won’t last till this Sat.

Will round up some old fogeys for a remembrance meal when you are here.

    Cheers till then

  150. Hi Charles
Thanks for being so magnanimous. Phew!

Thank to all the friends who have been supportive here as well as in private.

    Hi Tian Soo
I have no qualms in apologising when I am wrong.

To GT & CG – mmmwah mmmwah.

  151. Hahahahhaa Charles

I am always up (just can’t thrust too hard) with laundry done etc etc.

Wing Wah? So cute and HKish………

Very sweet of you to round up my fave people when I am next in town.

  152. Hi Jassmine

    Will certainly email you.

    Thanks!

p/s would like to read a poem from you after the romantic nite in Chinatown, if you don’t mind.

  153. Hi Dolly #206,

Am getting to understand some of SHC’s rules & cultures bit by bit now.
Rules are rules – pity I’m not aggressive or fierce enough to help you catch gatecrashers now but I’ll learn to be, in time – hehe.

This is an open stage, surely you can hear or catch a glimpse while you stood guard, probably an off key or forgotten lines can amuse you from that distance. Whatever it is, I know you’ll enjoy the night.

    Cheers,
    pearl.

  154. Hi GT, it’ll be a great pleasure to sing tht song for U.

    Got another “Song for you”

I’ve been so many places in my life and time

I’ve sung a lot of songs I’ve made some bad rhyme

I’ve acted out my love in stages

    With ten thousand people watching

But we’re alone now and I’m singing this song for you

(*)You tought me precious secrets of the truth withholding nothing

You came out in front and I was hiding

But now I’m so much better and if my words don’t come together

Listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding

(**)I love you in a place where there’s no space or time

I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine

And when my life is over remember when we were together

We were alone and I was singing this song for you….

(Asolutely love the song & the lyrics… enjoy)

  155. Hi Henry,

So sweet of you to be supporting in spirit, thanks very much!
I’ll dedicate this song to you and all those that called –
    “Thats What Friends Are For”!!

    Cheers,
    pearl.

  156. Hey Charles #242,

I’m very happy for you, you gained back a friend!!
Dedicate this song to you – “I Could Have Dance all Night”!

    Cheers,
    pearl.

  157. Hi everyone,

May I share a quotation here:

“Dear friends, no matter how we find them, are as essential to our lives as breathing in and breathing out.”

    Regards,
    Gabriella

  158. ..keep Smiling, keep Shinning….Knowing you can always count on me, for sure…( Thanks Pearl, this wonderfull song set me back by 35 mins….but you know, it’s all worth it….hahaha)

  159. yes extremely well said Pearl…

“I love you in a place where there’s no space or time

I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine…”

There’s no higher expression of Love & friendship than in those words from that beautufull song.

Love love love love love love love love love will set us free…hehehe

  160. Yay Henry, its always beautiful to have love all around –
if only I can pick all your love love love here to hang between the 200 lanterns at Kovan Cafe this Saturday… the night will be more twinkling, haha.

  161. Geraldine, ok U sing “Slow Hand”, & I’ll sing “Song for U” becos Hooha allows one song one singer each time, deal?
Looking forward to it. Orga…!! even I’m too shy to spell it in full hahaha. I believe Terence knows wht he’s talking abt, when he said U hv a way with the english language. So much so tht just talking to the men across the room, wud make them org…., & by the time they even so much as come near, it’s all over, game over ( for the men I mean ) hahaha.

Pearl, hv a great party this Sat. Cheers !

  162. Hi Pearl @ #255,

Thanks, and you have gained one too.

I love that song, (Julie Andrews?). Even tho I have 2 left feet, the song still lifts me up and puts me in the mood.

I can’t support you this time but know that you and your group will have the ‘magic’ to infect all you audience.

What do they say in showbiz? “Break a leg, my friend”.

  163. YaY…HURRAY …
CharlesC can come to ‘One Night In Chinatown’ this Saturday!!
I’ll sing ‘??????’ to you from our singing event.
Now that Peggy’s giving up her place for you,
no excuse that you cant be there, hahaha.

    Thanks Peggy!

    Be there!!
    pearl.

  164. Yes Charles, it is by Julie Andrews.
I have 2 left feet too but can always sway with the music.

In showbiz especially in theatre performance, thats how others wished their
friends. Its an old traditional theatre saying/wishing. Interesting story tho.

    pearl.

  165. Many cant wait for Saturday to come. I cant wait for tomorrow to read what the Spore team has to say about their loss to Iraq.

The 0-2 acoreline wasnt a humbling experience; it was a humiliation. Why blame the referee, as they will, for denying them a penalty if they can put 2 goals past the Iraqis at open play?

And the commentator was as competent as an IMH inmate wd hv been if offered the mic to run the match.

His “Spore made a strong comeback” after Iraq acored made a fool of himself. To make a comeback, let alone strong, Spore had to equalise with a goal, not running like a bunch of lost jackals seeking out the hunter’s rifle only to hide when the hunter showed up.

“Policktickle divide versus national divide” and the old jackall has lamented. But my louder mourn is that we are becoming a soft people today, the result of the conditioning we have been put thru.

Within ourselves, we make a lot of noises; externally, no resilience. surrender easily and meekly.

When we first noticed that we had become selfish/self-centred, and raised the alarm only to be rebuked “What’s wrong being kiasu?”.

Very wrong. With the rise of kiasuism, altruism suffered culminating in its early demise.

Stand on my side and i shall reward you with freebies and upgrading. This lure did not favour to our moral fabric. It taught me that it’s alright to be corrupted, that I cd receive benefits hooded but to give no 2 hoots to what’s right, what’s wrong.

    So?

So let us all enjoy ourselves this Saturday and hoot ourselves hoarse whether we are on stage or below nestling in the warm hugs and embraces of each other.

Some have gone to Chinatown on a buying/spending spree to dress it up. But do pls take note that without airconditioning, it can be very warm altho there’s a changing room for you to change and change till you forget to wear yr panties.

For me. everythg is free. My short-sleeved shirt is sponsored by Hard Rock and my trousers and shoes are courtesy of RWS.

  166. Henry

I don’t make deals; I compromise. Can’t do ‘Slow hand’, will do something that rocks.

Reeli? You are too shy to spell out the O word? Not from the way you went on to describe how it’s achieved. Heeheehee.

  167. Hi Oi Cheng,

Now that Peggy cannot come and has passed me her ticket, can I attend? If so do you need to change the registration? Or do I just turn up and say Peggy paid for me?

    Thanks for your input.

    Peggy @ #267,

Thanks a bunch Peggy. I shall endeavour to reimburse you for the cost of the ticket. That is the least I can do. Perhaps I can pass the proceeds to Pearl? Or someone else?

    Please let me know.

    Cheers

  168. Hi Everyone,

May Peh and Perilla will be at the Registration Desk to welcome you as you arrived. They are new members so do say hello and introduce yourself to them. There are quite a number of members I have not met, so this is good opportunity for me to get to know you. Oh, and please, please remember to bring your name tag.

    Hi Charles

Sure you can come. As I have already printed my registration list, I will just replace Peggy’s name with yours. If the ladies at the Desk cannot find your name, just say you’re Peggy. (Ha! ha! ha! Just joking lah! cos my list is in A-Z order and Charles now come under P)

Two days to go – excited to be enertained by drama group, singers and gamers and most of all getting together again at an SHC event with my friends. Yeah, let loose and enjoy!

  169. So li na frisna has frisked away, got older to become mrs huang. Thomas? If i were him, i wd have chosen a different daughter for wife, even the neighbor bibik cos i dnt like meat. Choices, changes……..the vagaries of life. So folks, come see them, watch them. They are comical, will make you. I m already, visualising how much effort thomas wil hv to put in to hug his wife.

  170. Hi Sam, Caroline, and everybody boys and girls,

I have not heard from you; but will you be setting up your roadside stall during this “One night in Chinatown”? Do let us know what are your plans, so that all of us know where to look for you; in case you go back to your car to take a nap.

And, thank you Tim for the moon cakes. Very thoughtful of you to bring along such expensive mooncakes.

Thomas, Janie, finally the date is getting closer. Ball is now with you; but do pass the ball back to the audience. thank you for the time.

Janet and Boon Liang, finally after all the planning, SHC members will get to enjoy a truly all Mandarin on-stage event. thank you for making this event come true.

And Lily, wish I can be there to listen to your mandarin opening and closing. Never heard you speak Mandarin; but since you have spent part of your life in China, I am sure your speech will be very welcome.

And, Dolly, thank you too for finetuning the show, and all the last minute arrangement. And not forgetting our food arranger Ah Nee and registration desk Oi Cheng.

Sorry, guys and gals, I shall miss you on this night. dont forget to look at the moon and remember your romantic years.

    Terence Seah

  171. No, Terence, with inflation running away, the mooncakes retailed at $48/box of 4 (I got them at half price a mth ago) arent expensive. The 3rd box will have to be single yolk since this is the only type left 3 weeks before Mid-Autumn at the outlet.

The video re-telling in English why the CHinese celebrate MA is quite unsame that my mum told me. If makes an angel out of Chang Er and omitted that part betrayed Hou Yi cutting the tree on the moon where CE had climbed up to escape from him.

There was no internet during the late Yuan Dynasty years so the gang supporting the cricket king Chu Yuan Chang to overthrow the Mongolians coordinated their uprising by hiding messages in mooncakes.

In acknowledging thanks to people sweating diligebtly to make the Nite possible, 2 names have been inadvertently left out.

Understand that Ronnie will not only lend us his sound systems but also help Boon Liang to instal them. Imagine what the Nite will be without a good solid audio set. He doesnt stop there. He will do us songs and trust me, he sings better than many professionals.

    Thank you Ronnie.

Not least, Pear-W. Without her spicing the Nite with a drama which she has been holding practices and rehearsals with her dedicated cast, the Nite will probably be a pale shadow of the moon.

    Thank you Pearl-W.

Very pleased too to see that the Walk is receiving very good support as well. It’s a healthy event organised by a very good friendly Committee.

Very displeased if Terence cant make it home to join us. Flight from India only takes abt 5 hours. There’re still more than 24 hours from the Nite.

Let us all hope for fine weather.

  172. Hi Terence

There will be no stall to look out for. My wares will be in my basket and I will ply the streets of Chinatown to sell my goodies.

Just look out for me and my basket.

    See you all tomorrow

    Carly

  174. Hi All

I attempted making the fortune cookies but only got one successfully folded. The rest hardened on me so I cannot fold them :(

I need an assembly line to make many pieces. So maybe another time……

    Cheers
    Carly

  175. The colourful lanterns are up! we are ready for the BIG PARTY, “One night in Chinatown”……..thanks to Jassmine creativity and hardwork. :)

    Ah Nee

  176. Thank you Ah Nee for the update. Jassmine is not only poetic; she is very creative too. I am not able to see the lanterns; but I have no doubt they are very well put up.

It’s raining heavily each night in Chennai; and the traffic jams are horrendous. It really pours. It rains in Bangkok, in Jakarta, in Chennai and in Perth. And, the same in Japan and Taiwan. Wish the event will be dry. Enjoy guys and gals.

And, Sam, Caroline, no worries, there will be other occasions when we can try your potong ice cream and the fortune cookies.

I wish everyone a screaming night in “One night in Chinatown”.

    Terence Seah

  177. Hi All,
As Sockie can only b around slightly after 7pm, anyone can help to take some photos from start till she arrive har? I am bringing a very small camera hence not sure if these photos taken will be nice anot lor… Cheers.. Dolly

  178. Thanks to Ah Nee and a friend, the decoration work at the venue was completed in 31/2 hours. Ah Nee is such a fast and efficient worker. Her creative input added to the mid-Autumn ambience we were trying to create.

Thanks, Ah Nee, You made a difference. :)

  179. All Organising Members/Team

Thank you for such a wonderful performance last night. Really enjoyed everything. ‘SHC GOT TALENT!’ eh?

Thanks to our ‘Indian Chief’ Terence for mooting the idea. Innovative and creative. You really look like our ‘Indian Chief’ with your new image! heehee

    Cheers to everyone.

    Till we meet again……

  180. All Organising Committee Members & Performers

    Agree with Gabriella.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself last evening. The performers were great and the costumes, wow! Even a woman can drool over them.

It was indeed well planned and executed. The skies were kind to us.

Thanks also to Ronnie & Boon Liang for keeping good music for us. Without them, the show could not have gone on.

Thanks Dolly for making me laugh so much with your naughty games.

Thanks also to Lily, Janie and Thomas for MC-ing and speeches. We really have talented and effectively bi-lingual people in our midst.

Thanks also to Janet for the wonderful selection of singers and your wonderful performance.

And thanks to Ah Nee for making sure we fill up our stomachs and doing the beautiful deco with Jassmine.

And to our Drama performers, thanks for your fine performance.

And yes, to Terence for mooting this great idea.

In case I missed out a name or two, thanks to you too for a job well done.

And to the wonderful people who came to share the fun, thanks for your great company.

Everything was just magical. Even caught someone, whom I thought disliked dancing, happily gyrating to the music.

Sorry for being so long winded. But just still very happy the morning after.

    Cheers
    Carly

  181. Smack! Smack! on my buttocks.

    Sorry Sockie, the unsung hero.

Thanks very much for your hardwork, snapping away the whole night.

Thousand apologies and I owe you one :)

    Cheers
    Carly

  182. Will leave the acknowledgment of efforts and pouring of accolades to others. All – the audience who gave unstinting support and performers who called on every ounce of their energy – all truly deserve every nice thing said of them bcos they were really great.

The actors and actresses in the drama spoke with each other comfortably which showed not only hard work put in but also good bonding, and so it was a good depiction of a Reunion. I particularly enjoyed it for a reason but ironically will have to take 3 marks off the perfect 10 for the reason. Somebody told lie. Lai huat didnt come from Shanghai. And the infant in gestation wont be blue-eye…………blue-eye boy perhaps.

Lai Huat was with me since the Ghost Month ended. We were both in Geylang trying our luck at stalls which quickly folded when polis came, shouting 369 or playing the paikow.

Then came Tarzan’s mother. Or at least she dressed like one with her loin cloth hiding half of her torso like a siao ah sor the size of gigantor. She was desperately hunting for a boyfriend after a 1-nite stand with Tai Seng Mon Ki. Lai Huat too was desperate for $ ammunition to continue his fight so they struck a deal.

The Geylang Hokien Beng became a Shanghai towkay and Lai Huat became a foreign talent. And the baby he wd inherit will look quite like him, not any blonde hair blue eye angmor kia.

  183. THANK YOU TO THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE, PERFORMERS, HELPERS,PARTICIPANTS AND ALL OTHERS WHO CONTRIBUTED TO AN ENJOYABLE AND UNFORGETABLE EVENING….

Tim Liu-thank you for your generous donation of mooncakes and Terence Seah for his relentless support, despites his tight schedule, to be presented for the evening.

SHC truly has GREAT talents! Well done!

  184. Jeremy-L, thank you for liking the mooncakes. Haha, if I had been generous, I would have sent 3 truckloads from ???, not merely 3 boxes each only bigger than a siew mai.

The theme was reunion, the occasion was one of love. I could see Peggy sitting so closely with you (think if it was home she wd have sat and bounced on yr laps), looking into yr eyes so tenderly each time she spotted something nice on stage. Lucky you and of cos you must hv worked very hard to gain such deep love.

Talking about trucks, I must add something to that short dance Lai Huat did with senorita tarzan.

Hands clapsed together, with verve, he swerved like a lumberjack steering the wheel of a tua leng kong (demolition truck). What a patented dance ! Sibei pattern leh.

Btw, he wasnt Terence-S we saw. He was in Chennai and kept himself there, to his words.

The lookalike who came was his clone. I am sure. Absolutely no doubt. There was a stub on his backside, the remnant of a cut-off tail. We were standing side by side at the latrineI and I saw it when he dropped his pants .

That creature was hairy but shaved all to make into 1 long tress which he put on his head when he walked merrily in. That was the Tai Seng Min Ki I talked abt earlier.

  185. We got a shower of blessing during our drama performance last night and the audience tickled – love their laughters! Thank You!!!

Thanks everyone for making ‘One Night In Chinatown’ a success –
greatest efforts from Boon Liang & Ronnie! Without you guys & your equipments, the drama play would be as good as a mime. Thank You!!

Terence, we finally met for the first time!
I was so sure you’ll be there – Thank You!!!

Hey Charles Chua, nice to have met you too! Sorry to disappoint you with that song, I started on a key too high, haha. Thanks for coming and thanks Peggy for making it possible – I gained two friends, Yay!!

Also, many were curious to meet the drama mamasan –
Ladies..you all are wonderful supporters, Xie Xie!!!

    Cheers!!
    pearl.

  186. it’s the 2nd time i attended a ‘big scale’ singing & dancing event of SHC (1st one being ‘the cabaret shanghai night’). for both events i think the word “silverhair” is not an adjactive at all to describe the members esp the singers and dancers – they’re so young, energetic & sexy!

I enjoyed the singing of Janet Chan – she’s as beautul as her song last night. I like the way Carly sings and controls the stage – her voice made me feel like being in Caesar Palace. Watching Catherine Koh singing & dancing is an eye candy whilst Lola made the night to have a true “chinatown” feel.
I know Tim can yak yak but didn’t realise he can sing too. the quiver in his voice must have vibrated several hearts in the audience.
As for our MC cum singer cum actor Thomas Loh, you are “Mister boleh” man!
Am glad our director Pearl Wong is happy with the performance. I hope it’s worth all the efforts and time she put in.

Bravo to the committee in making a dream come true and cheers to all performers who brighten up the night!

  187. Hi Pearl @ 293,

You were right about the shower of blessings, The weather was very kind, especially when I heard the 90.5 DJ say how ‘pregnant’ the skies were with rain in the afternoon. And despite that calculated opinion, the weather was wonderful.

I didn’t think I was disappointed at all with the song you sang, reminded me of the old days of the RTS shows with Ahmad Jaffar and his ‘big band’ sounds. You are a multi-talented lady. And like Frisna said, to be complimented on all the time and effort put in by you and your group.

And Terence, thanks for your wonderful surprise when you showed up, ‘incognito’. Remember Marge T could not recognise you when I introduced you to her? You should do it more often.

And of course thanks too, to Tim for his moon cakes, Carly for her ‘ma lai gou’, Dolly, Lily, Oi Cheng, Ah Nee, Janet, Boon Liang and Ronnie, Janie and the multi-talented Thomas Loh, MC, singer and actor, for all their effort and time spent in co-ordinating this big production.

Now we know why SHC is so successful, because of the efforts put in by all helpers, arrangers, friends, and the participation from the members.

    Cheers,

PS Not forgetting Peggy T, hope to see you cycling this Fri.

  188. Hi All

At LAST the photos are up in the website after countless crashes and stalling….. promised Terence to ahve them up yesterday but the PC/SW do not want to co-operate with me AARRGGHHH….now I need to go cath my ZZZZZZZZZZZs liao

Caroline #288 appreciate your kind thoughts and don’t go smacking yoruself too hard lah

    S@@kie

  189. Dear Frisna @ #294 Thank you for the compliment:) You are a natural on the stage. You look and speak in such a relaxed style that I feel I am actually at someone’s home for the Mid-autumn festival.

Dear Charles @ #295 You are welcome :)

Dear Sockie @ #296 Muah! Muah!

    Cheers
    Carly

  190. Charles-C, glad that you too like the mooncakes.

One missy actually walked up to confront me for one more bite of the kueh bulan. She started biting me when I cd only offer her only a sheepish grin.

Seriously, I am very happy and encouraged that after munching thru a scrumptious spread of buffet, folks still had this appetite to taste the mooncakes. Thanks !

Frisna, it wasnt a quiver. It was a shiver. How not to be scared like hell when I knew that the audience were good judges of singing. That none threw any heart or dart at me told me that I had managed. ???

    ????????????????????????????????????TIMLIU ????????

  191. Hello all SHCians,

Just a note to say Thank you for the wonderful time I had at the I Nite in Chinatown Mooncake celebration.

All the Drama performers, Singers, Helpers and members of the Organising committee and appreciative SHC audience made the Lantern Festival so enjoyable. The food was good for the amount each paid, not forgetting, the desserts that were served too. Thanks to all the sponsors.

I am not a regular at Shcians’ meetings so this nite I met friends whom I had met before and made new friends too. Seems like the more I attend SHCians’ functions, the more friends I shall have. Just worried that my memory for names of all I know today maybe forgotten tomorrow not by choice but by the dreadful aging Old brain. Going on 70.

Forgot to mention that Terence surprised us with his quiet appeareance for the celebration, which he thought that he won’t be able to make it.Terence,we appreciate your presence.

    Thanks for the great evening.

    Geok Suan.

  192. Down memory lane –
    Oh, to be young again!

One night in Chinatown came the opportunity.
Oldsters, energised, took to the stage readily,
    Belting out Chinese oldies with voices still lusty;
    Dancing spontaneously, grooving seductively,
And play-acting too, nerves not showing.

Suddenly Terence came in his “she” persona,
With a long, low pony tail a la hippie fashionista.
“But why is his pony tail damp and limp?”
“Came straight from the airport without bathing!” said he,
So eager to see his newborn baby.

A game started. The male contestants, their hips gyrating-
Ribald humour – laughter almost brought the roof down!
Amidst the din came a penetrating, metallic “GONG” sound- So cool-like a bygone Chinese night-watch on his round!

    The years unravelled to the nostalgic seventies;
There, where yue liang dai biao wo de xin,
    There, Fancy’s flight spiralled down,
And dreams fulfilled on that one night in Chinatown :)

  193. Hi Jassmine

    Very nice, indeed……….

Surprised you penned this poem so soon. Great delight.

Saw Terence pics and what a nitemare! Kekekekeee. Think he confused romantic nite, thinking it was freak nite (that time the wig was scarier).

  194. Hi Jassmine #301 – Envy

Indeed “Oldsters, energised, took to the stage readily”……… cross my heart, the SHcians performers were fantastic!!!!

    cheers

  195. Thank you to all singers for your wonderful performance in this event contributing great effort and time spent in the numerous practices as well as monetary spending on stage costumes. Despite a little hiccups here and there, nevertheless your performance have touched the hearts of the audiences and a big thank you to them for their generous applauses and unselfish compliments both in the post and messages.

Greatest thanks to Ronnie Sow who had unconditionally, besides lending out his own home sound system equipments also setting up and controlling it, without which, our songs would not have projected wonderfully. Not forgetting our sound team Boon Liang, Dan Huang and Daniel Chan for their great help too.

Thanks to Terence and his committees for their support in the singing segment.

    Cheers!
    Janet Chan

  196. …a little raindrop rolled down my window pane
Jasmine Teo’s enjoinder wud end with word pain….

    hahaha tht’s poetry ins’nt it…

Jasmne, well done, another one in the SHC collections…..

  197. V sorry, but have meant to use the word rejoinder instead of enjoinder.

Enjoinder cast a sinister pall over the landscape. exactly opposite of my good intentions. Another attempt at fusing compliments with a tease. hahaha Good weekend all !

  198. Hi all,

Thanks to EO Terence/Dolly and all the organizing committee members for their hard work and efforts in making “One Night In Chinatown” a wonderful and unforgettable event. As I was involved in the inaugural performance, I would like to share my experience to all of you.

It was my first experience in performing on stage and I am glad that I was able to overcome my phobia of stage fright although I was quite nervous. In fact, I had enjoyed myself very much during rehearsals and the actual performance. This experience had really helped me to gain confidence to facing people in difference status.

I would like to thank Terence for setting up the club and for his imaginative idea for organizing this event, and Janet for inviting me to be one of the singers and helping me to source for the DVD for the song I have to sing. Thank also to Pearl for her guidance in the drama group and of course the encouragement and support from some members to fulfill my dream of performing.

As Pearl is now recruiting more members for the drama group, I would encourage you to give it a try, it is very interesting, fun and best of all making new friends. You never know your hidden talent until you give it a try.

    Best Regards,

    Judy Lim

  199. Judy-L, if you were nervous, I couldnt see it bcos you didnt show. All I saw was a very short skirt but too long for my liking.

Acting is fun but one needs to put in time. Time is something many others have; I dont.

So if someone wants me to act, give me the role of a luckless romantic. My lips dont have to speak. Just 1 wet kiss – make it long and so worthwhile of my appearing – and then her jealous boyfriend shoots me from behind.

And then the plot climbs to a climax with folks avenging my death. A intriguing plot of gore with ingredients of love, jilt, betrayal, deceit, revenge and justice.

A story that will be longer than “?“ with our kids taking on the acting after us.

  200. First off, I would like to say a big Thank You to Terence who initiated the theme, ” One Night in Chinatown”,
which created an excellent opportunity for the drama group to take the stage for the 1st time. We all had fun, and
    hopefully the audience did too.

We have capable and fantastic people in SHC who worked tirelessly and gave their best throughout all the events
that have taken place. Kudos to them!

As the drama group is now recruiting, it would be nice to let the interested know what the drama group is about
    and what it does.

In the drama group sessions, we usually gather and brainstorm about the plays, presenting all sorts of different ideas.
Another fantasmical thing that the drama group usually do is makan, makan, makan! Most of us would bring a little
something to the sessions and everyone shares!

Drama here isn’t about memorizing lines. We do a lot of eating, singing and dancing! Basically, we have fun. Lots of fun.
So if you’re looking for something to challenge your creative mind, or you simply wish to have a good time, drama is for you!

  201. Saw a comment abt EO ? having suggestion to have One night in
Chinatown ( Cantonese Version ) in October if i remembered correctly ?

Wonderful idea! I love to listen to Cantonese pop songs esp. its melody. And I am looking 4 ward to such a night by our own brand of live SHC singers like Janet, Tim Liu and other hidden talented songbirds.

The Mandarin night was very successful judging from the comments and photos.

So I hope this Cantonese night can materialise too.

Cantonese songs like Shanghai Beach sung by Francis Yip and other old TVB HK drama theme songs are very good to listen too. :) like this particular one ” In the Chamber of Bliss” and songs by Jackie Chung, Sam Hui, the late Roman Tam and Danny and Andy Lau etccccc….

However, sad to say tat I do not understand much of what they are singing although I am a Cantonese. otherwise it is very meaningful.
I too like to listen to the Getai Hokkien songs, very melodious again does not know what they are singing about. :( Never mind the lyrics just sing the melody along with them.

  202. Hi Tim #309,

    I got a play that suits you – ‘Geylang’….
Everything that you wanted, happened here.
It need not be as long as “?“, but good enough, hee.

  203. Yes, Steven-C, the Chinatown Nite was a sweet success.

Although the short days leading to the Show was littered with some difficulties, differencves were out aside and everyone put his/her best foot forward to make the Nite memorable. In particular, I like to repeat the contribution of Ronnie – his songs ans heavy sound equipment. Most, the chore of possibly single-handedly carrying the equipment to his home on the 2nd level without lift.

    Geylang…….everythg I want happens there?

Well, Pearl, if you hv in mind the sleazy and flesh, no more. Frankly, with my eyes close, I can locate the attractions on a naked body.

Perhaps, Gay Lang suit some people better. There’s a women’s group religiously backing the gay langs. To prove that they’re as good as men and a force to be reckoned with, the butches might go down the militant path without wong hoong hui watching over them. Not quite into throwing granades yet but certainly they know how to throw granites and the basin at you.

With people getting more difficult to please and to satisfy, I think we shdnt cut ministers’ pay now. It’s increasingly a harrowing experience for them. They need more money to buy hypertension medicine and shields from some women’s talons.

  204. Hi Steven Chan,

Thanks for being the first supporter to speak up on our ‘Canton High-Tea’ Event. I’m thinking .. last Sunday of Nov.

As in any event, our main problem are the head-counts.
I would love to hold this event at S’pore Recreation Club where a good friend of mine is a long time active member there. The club is near the City Hall mrt, but I couldnt confirm the venue altho its so available to me. The 80pax required for this function hall with the stage plus buffet is $30 each with no other charges. I was hesitant confirming it as I wasnt sure if I get 80pax – else I end up paying the balance if only 30pax sign up. Others not so nice and non-well equipped venues are at $12/$15 each with 50pax. I can understand these cafes or Pub needs a certain price tag to make it worthwhile for them as they are running a business. Maybe I should have enough supporters before taking up a venue, hehe.

    pearl.

  205. Well, Pearl, nothing venture nothing gain.. All you hv 2 do is 2 put a post 4 tis event so dat tose thinking of attending tis event will register attendances. In this way, u gauge d number of headcount accordingly hor.. What can b d worst scenario, except 2 cancel if registration failed 2 meet target at a stipulated date (given by the club operator), tio bo? Good luck… Cheers.. Dolly

  206. Hi Dolly Jie,

Thanks very much for the advice/tips .. so sweet of you!

As a first time EO and for any event to happen, I first have to know where I can hold it, the food and all its pricing thats in favour of our members.

Participants are ever ready on my side as they can put up a play within 2mths. Support from members makes a successful event and cancelling an unpopular event is easy but it will somehow cost our trust and integrity with the venue owners & caterers who so willingly help give us good rates and someone whom we would want to look towards a long term partnership for future SHC drama/musical events. As in any business, they too has to see if its worth it – bearing in mind to let out the whole venue FOC for 5hrs to 30, 50 or 80pax?

    Cheers too,
    pearl.

  207. Hi Tim #314,

Geylang need not always be sleazy lah. I heard certain lorongs have high class ones and men who frequent them do not regard them as that and eventually.. their mistresses. Thats where the drama happens….

Performances are very stressful especially with the high expectancies of perfection is not easy to bear more so with such judgemental audience if you didnt take it all in a fun way. I heard professionals take drugs to calm their nerves .. we take on a thick skin mask, kekeke.

  208. Haha, Pearl-W, you seem to know a lot about Geylang?

Ah Long San is gone. Goo Ni Ter and Tua Bui Loo too so Geylang isnt quite the glory it was. Even frog legs are not as succulent not to mention legs which shd be shapely, Sigh.

Like what Dolly-L has suggested, it starts the ball rolling with a post on a Drama Nite.

Find a venue which can take in at least 30 for audience, with room for expansion.

Although I dont act – it’s a tiring effort for the lazy me to be other than myself – I will support you. I will volunteer to help out at the changing room and go thru the wardrobe to ensure good fittings.

  209. I can’t help reading all the comments here and feels that we are actually enacting a drama here. All the supporting cast are here. Lily and Dolly play their part. Geraldine contribute her scripts from afar. Daniel Chan not only sing but acted out his scripts too.

Henty Yip has have a meaty part, so has Caroline and Charles and Tian Soo. Tim of course play a large part in the acting scene. It look like almost everybody in SHC have come on ‘stage’ to say their piece.

Unfolding in the drama, we have Terence relating his experience at the hospital and many speculating whether it is the ‘C’ issue. It was real fun as almost everyone have their scripts to adhere too.

The drama team led by Pearl do appreciate the opportunity to also play their part. It was something new to us and we all put in our efforts. Much adulation and scorn were hurl at us but we know that we are not professional and just doing what we could amidst the fun and friendship.

Certain acting parts are not up to expectation inspite of all the rehearsals we had, but we are first time acting on stage and tend to forget our lines. The important thing is to learn from our mistake and improve on the next show. But sad to say, there may not be another show as too much grievances are being aired and unhapinness abounds.

Shall we leave the sad part behind and try to reconcile and start on a new show?

    Dan
