Valentine day is just around the corner. Time to remember our loved ones.

Everyone of us knows Valentine Day.  We think of love and we remember our loved ones.  It’s a good time for children to remember what their parents have done for them; and to thank them for taking care of us all these years.  We love our parents; never mind where they are.

While love is treasured anytime and everytime, Valentine Day is one occasion we stop what we are doing and spend some time with our spouse.  For some of you, Valentine Day may mean a stalk of rose or a nice romantic dinner.  Maybe, it could be some time at the East Coast Park, standing on the breakwaters, and screaming out loud "Ja, I love you".  Still, that little bit of time together while we have the time.

There is fun among friends too.  Our close friends, gather together for some beers, in some noisy corners of Singapore.  A nice way to dance the night away till 3am the next morning.  Get drunk, and instead of going home, you spend the night on the foot path.  Why not?

For those who have met someone new in their life, why not, send a few stalks of lemon grass, cut nicely into a flower.  There are many more years ahead for all of us.

So, be Valentine Day be spent with our children, friends or loved ones, it’s a nice time to be romantic.

And, if you are not shy, you can post your wishes here.  Join together for dinner.  Or have someone send the roses for you.  Have fun.

  1. Hi Tian Soo,

Ja is a thai word, used to address someone you treasure. So, you can call your wife Ja. Nowadays, a man or a woman can address someone of the opposite sex Ja, in a loving manner.

Just friends, we normally dont use Ja, unless we want to be cheeky. Someone in mind?

  2. Terence

This is dangerous. If I shout ‘Ja,I love you’ The ‘changkol’ will probably hit my head before I get a chance to explain like you did.

Better let the day pass quietly and stay alive, or just do IT.

  3. Hahaha! Tian Soo

Ja to you… and please be my little teerak!

Yes, a little Thai can be a dangerous thing… just bring one home and you’ll have the end of a changkol on your head, and the end of your life!

But, Terence: Give a bunch of lemongrass to your new Singaporean girlfriend? You’ll get smacked on the head!

Yes, like Tian Soo, I’d rather lie low on Valentine’s.

  4. Hi Terence! I remember when I was young, there wasn’t any Valentine Day. I think the concept took off by retailers such as florists, F & B outlets and hotels. It’s so commercialized now. A stalk of rose can costs up to S$10 before VD. Crazy I think.

On a lighter note, someone told me Valentine Day is cancelled this year based on mathematical calculations.

    14-2-12 = 0

    Cheers

  5. Just don’t understand people why they only celebrate Valentine Day on 14 Feb. It is because of Commercial that make them feel great by celebrating or it is a trend or a legend to follow ? What happen after that, will people still celebrate their love ones everyday ????

To me, VALENTINE DAY is everyday. When you love someone, it is EVERYDAY and we should celebrate the love forever and not just specially for that occasion on Feb 14. That day should be just a REMEMBRANCE or ANNIVERSARY day for something special. Do you agreed ??

  6. #7 Danny Lye,

I agree Danny. It’s the younger generation who thinks it’s COOL to profess one’s affection for the opposite sex with a ‘romantic’ dinner, roses and whatever not. The roses are presented with teddy bears! *rolls eyes* How childish!

I too believe love should be expressed via words or via deeds 24/7 365 days a year for many years the couple are together..married, I hope eventually. :p

We will be rebuked for spoiling the young people’s fun I suppose.. blehhhhhh

  7. HI, Chill out !!

The difference of celebration on VD before & after marriage
for me is, when i received 2 dozens of red roses from my
beloved 27 yrs ago before i said ” I do” ..I was SO HAPPY and my heart was ‘smiling’ & ‘singing’ for whole week..

Now, after 27 yrs of inflation & cost of living up..when i
receive 1/2 dozen of yellow Roses..I was not singing anymore
cos’ my heart would be bleeding for 3 weeks..and reminded
him..”you know, 1/2 dozen costs so much, we could have bought 5 kilo of rice, 3 chickens, 3 pcs of Ribeye steaks
etc etc..” My beloved replied ” dear, i downgrade the Roses from red to yellow..as Red is more costly..It is only
    ONCE a while..It is OK..”

Isn’t it Realities of life ? Old wives’heart bleeds when
our husband spend money in meaningless things..according to
my Diamond Dealer girl friend..” when a Mistress buys a
diamond, she will try to choose as BIG as her eyes’ size, but OLD WIVES (lau po)will always choose as small as the pupil/iris of the eye..”..

Anyway, Red roses, yellow roses i have them all cos’ he
bought me an oil painting with colourful Roses..and hang out
during Feb 14th week.. This is the best solution..no heart
bleeds and no nagging and the oil painting values go up yr
after yr..OLD WIFE is quite far sighted !! Mistress, i am
NOT SURE !! Have a good laugh, everybody !!
gentlemen, you can make origami paper Roses to cope with
inflation issue..i am sure OLD WIVES would appreciate the
thought and moved to tears.. HAPPY Valentine Day !!!

  8. sorry, gentlemen, DO NOT send Origami ROSES to girlfriends
or mistress or lemon grass cut into flowers..
cos’ the next day, ST will have headlines with very
sensational news about some tragedy happening because of
origami Roses or lemongrass flowers between a couple..
    hahahaha

  9. Hi Felice #9 and #10

You’ve got a good sense of humour. Tks for the good laugh. Laughter is the best medicine at our age!

  10. Hi Felice #10

I was folding the Kawasaki Origami Rose of various colour using 25.0 x 25.0 cm Origami Paper for some of the Staff and Customer in my place of work, and my wife ask me a Question…”Have you consider their feeling, when you give them, the Beautiful Origami Roses/with support and Leaf”…So no Roses for them.
Last night, she saw me folding again, this time She just smile and walk away….Its assorted type of Origami Hearts in various colour (except white & Black)

    In Love With Origami…..Thomas

  11. Dear Felice @#9 and #10

Its hilarious and I laughed so much.

I like the last para @#9. Roses for a life time of Valentine’s Day? Very smart hubby. He save money, wife’s heart no need to bleed and wife is happy. Win win situation.

    Cheers
    Carly

  12. Hi Thomas,
You will have LOTs of orders soon …Kawai neh !
Have you been to japan’ Origami competitions ? You
sure have a fine HOBBY..GOOD FOR YOU !! Do you play Chinese
    Chess ? Know anyone ?

  13. Hi Gabriella,

Glad you like the JOKE ! So are you still getting RED ROSES
OR YELLOW ROSES or Origami ROSES OR ……??

Another joke about VD..from my younger girl who was 14 in
Sec 2..She was given many VD gifts, flowers & chocolates etc
BUT her mummy warned her NEVER to take any..otherwise the
boys would think ‘you accept his CRUST, LOVE whatever…”

But after school, she came home with a nicely wrapped
Chocolate with the most Kawai wrapping even with dried ice
pack..Mummy asked ” WHY ? I remind YOU this morning before
you set off for school..you are in trouble IF he thinks YOU
also LIKE him..you know, it is NOT WISE to like any one at this age..How come you forget what i said…

My little girl replied ” OH, Mum, COOL.Cool..listen before
you go any further……This boy told me THIS IS ROYCE
CHOCOLATE..and i thought my mummy ONLY loves ROYCE chocolate…WHY NOT ? And i told him the boy..IT IS FOR MY
MUMMY, you know !!” BOY replied, IT IS OK, even better !!
I already heard enough since you came in Sec 1 last year..
your mummy carries a shot-gun & if any boy dared to ask you OUT…I am SO glad she likes ROYE !! “‘

My silly girl..and the whole LIM’ family has ROYCE for VD
day…and NO MORE VD gifts for her the next year………
Horray !! Cos’ the whole school knew the ‘shot-gun story’ !!

I have PEACE year after year from then on..NOW she is 20..
Young Mothers out there, Dare to use the Shot-gun story ?
It will be a more painless Motherhood journey..Guarantee !!

    and i accept

  14. Hi Everybody

Let me share a joke which I’ve read long ago about a poor husband sending flowers on Valentine Day to his wife.

On that special day, the hubby happily returned home with a dozen red roses in his hand. Instead of kisses and hugs he expected, he kena scolding for “wasting $$ on useless and expensive things…” (>_<)

The following year, he send her several bunches of cauliflowers. She was surprised and asked him “what is this ?”

He happily replied : “Darling, if I don’t give you flowers, you said I’m unromantic… if I give, you said I waste $$…” so I compromise and give you cauliflowers which still has “flower” at the end of the word and after VD, you can also cook it for meal lah… – no wastage lor…”
    **(^_^)**

For the next couple of nites, he has only “cauliflowers” for dinner … (#_#)

    Cheers – Pauline Ho

  15. Hi pauline,

  17. Hi Thomas,

Origami certainly are not related to Chinese Chess..
I want to remember fondly my late Mother’ playing chess -days-
and using our brain at this age CAN prevent dementia…
Must be prepared for the Golden years, always !

My japanese friends used to send Lots of Origami papers/books
for my kids…Hope your Origami Hearts/ Roses bring lots of CHEERS to everyone on VD today..I am preparing a Tiramisu
for hubby ..he would serve it with Expresso coffe..for ME.

  18. Hi Felice,

By the way, our Kenneth Tan makes delicious Tiramisu too.

  23. Dear Felice

No, I didn’t know cauliflowers have beautiful flowers… that goes to show how ignorant I am… hahaha… (>~<)

Thanks for enlightening me on this… ^o^

Will definitely go to Google to take a lo_oK at them…
    **(^_^)**

Cheers and have a great week ahead… – Pauline

  24. Hi Pearl,

Glad to know that a karaoke event is being planned by you.
That’s very nice of you to bunch us SHC karaoke buffs together under one roof to sing our hearts out or just chit chat the time away.

Oh yes, I love multi-lingual songs rather than solely one language medium type. It is the variety format on songs that makes a karaoke event more lively and interesting.

Please count me in. Thanks a lot.

    Rgds,

    Terry Tang

  25. Hi Terry Tang #27,

Thank you for your interest and the first to sign up.
Yes, I’m planning a multi-language karaoke for the sake of karaoke lovers as I had this request during our Canto event that they want another again. I’ve not decided on the date & venue, probably Safra Tampines again as most of them like the spaciousness, wide dance floor & good sound system plus a KJ. If I have enough supporters for its rental of $350, the event will be there.

This event will be on a new post, not here .. so, I will transfer this comment of yours to our appropriate post once I put it up. Am sure we’ll have another day of great fun singing & dancing .. sponsored snacks.. potluck?

    pearl.
