IT Interest Group Meeting on 20.04.2012 (Friday)

The objective of this Group is to provide an opportunity for any SHC member to come out for a cup of coffee, chitchat and to share their interests in computer related matters and smart devices. For those interested, it’s a great way to get involved & meet others with similar interests. This gathering will discuss what you want to learn in computer classes and other IT/smart devices related matters.  We should avoid the peak hours of these food court outlets and to conduct it on a weekday.

We can also show you how you can surf the Internet even without a computer at home. If no question is raised, we can discuss about the streaming (media) player. (We are familiar with the DVD player. With Internet, now we have the streaming player).

We plan to have a small gathering of size not more than 12 SHC members including the EO, for an effective and meaningful discussion, on a first-come-first-serve basis.

The details:

Date: 20-04-2012 (Friday)

Venue: Plaza Singapura Kopitiam Food Court (Level 6). Nearest MRT at Dhoby Ghaut.

Time: 3.00 PM to 5.00 PM

  1. Hi Hew Lee

I know something about the internet, but not everything there is to know about it. Also I am keen to know the functions of many electronic gadgets on the market. Please list me in.

  4. Hi Hew Lee

I, too, have a travel card that beeps twice on the bus. Please register this underaged student for the coming discussion.

    Thanks

  5. Kenneth (#7) – If you compare this IT Class with that your grand-children are attending in schools, I bet they (your grand-children) will envy you. Why? For this IT Class, you only attend once monthly for a 2-hours session. No text books, no homework, no test/exams, can come late or even don’t come, no need to pay school fees, can study with a cup of coffee on the table, etc. ..and the best of all, you ask the teacher with your questions and the teacher provide you with the answers. Furthermore, the teacher even record the teaching notes for you and email right to your computer. What more do you want besides telling your legs to walk to Plaza Singapura on the date/time arranged. Anyway, welcome.

  6. Hi,

Please add me too. I am sorry that I did not turn up for the previous session as I was down with seasonal flu. I tried but was unable to contact Mr. Hew as I do not have his contact.

  7. Peri Liew (#9), Chengpun (#10) and Thean Hor (#11) – welcome all of you. This coming session’s discussion will be on the IT gadget, the streaming player. If you have one, please let us know your feedback.
Thean Hor: It is understandable you cannot contact me as we are not allowed to put our mobile number in this web site.

Hi Wai Jin & Hew Lee,

Every registrant by definition in this IT study group is overaged. How nice it would be if we could turn the clock back to become young again and mentally receptive to IT and understand it better. All over my hands there are ‘liver spots’ – real English term – which locals understand as “elderly spots”. As age advances, liver spots begin unstoppably to invade the face of every individual in his eighties or nineties.

Whatever may be the outcome of elderliness in us, there is no excuse for us to remain stunted on the learning curve. As to many elderly already highly conversant in IT, congrats to them. It follows that people of whatever age having a natural flair for IT are mentally nimble, able to analyse the intricasies of the IT discipline which is no mean feat.

Longwindedness in speech and writing is a sure, telling sign of advancing elderliness. I am prone to it.

Thank you Hew Lee for your graciousness on training us on IT.

    Sincerely,

    Terry

  11. Hi Hew Lee,
Thank you for organising and sharing. The hotspot app you ask about is actually a feature call tethering. Tethering and providing Wi Fi from the smart phone is available both from Apple Iphone and the Android system smart phone. The last session we had, tethering was provided from my Samsung Galaxy smartphone. The person providing this tethering or mobile Wi Fi must subscribed to a data plan. Those data transmitted and received by others will be charged to his account. To turn on this tethering service on the Samsung Android system phone, just click setting, then go to wireless menu and click mobile tethering. I will be away and unable to attend this session. Best regards and cheers..

Bobby (#24) – Thanks for the information. For those who need to do some Internet work outside their office with a lap-top, this is a very useful IT feature.

  14. Hi Hew Lee,

Now there are more than 12 SHC members attending your ITIG.

This is my first request to attend your lessons. Will you consider registering me?

    Regards,

    johnny pow

  15. Kwan Pearl (#28) and Johnny Pow (#29) – All of you are welcome to attend. The problem with a large crowd is – only a limited number of questions can be addressed. If anyone of you can arrange for a function room in any of the condo complex, it will be most ideal. Time slot should be on the 3rd Friday of the month, in the afternoon slot. Email me to discuss further at hewlee@gmail.com

  18. Hi Hew Lee,

Many thanks for sharing your knowledge on streaming media this afternoon.

Today I also learn from you that MS word got a language option to convert pinyin to chinese character. This may encourage me to learn how to read chinese characters.

I need to upgrade to MS word full version. Mine is the Starter 2010 which I don’t use. I got Open Office but its words document do not have chinese language option.

Thank you once again I look forward to your next lessons.

    Regards,

    johnny pow
