  6. Hi Mr Lee,

You cannot use your house key to open a different house. You need to ask the owner for the key in order to gain access to his house.

Survey Monkey is a totally different website from SHC. If Survey Monkey is owned by SHC, Terrence will be a multi-millionaire. :)

If you want to see the result you must register for a new account with Survey Monkey. It’s free.

  7. Thanks Steven #7,

I wish i was a multi millionaire. Let’s all try to own a Survey Monkey.

    Hi Steven, James,
I read through the documentation. Seems the survey results will only be shown after completing the survey. If anyone can read the respose, please let me know.

    Hi May Woo,
If you are reading this, give us an idea how the general membership can read the survey response. We have so far 50 responses to the survey.

  8. Dear Terence,

I have signed up with Survey Monkey but I still cannot access the results of your survey. How? May I suggest you send the results via email to the 34 members who did the survey?

    Thank you

Thank you for your explanation. Now I know how lacking I am in terms of IT knowledge.
Hope I can learn more from SHC members

  10. Hello All and Terence.

The taste of the pudding is in the eating. It needs 13 persons each to contribute S$ 3.00 to get S$39.00. If there are other persons willing to contribute, I will join in. Then Chief may upgrade his account to Professional Plan.

If there aren’t 13, then the pudding is not worth eating.

This is my pesonal opinion. No offense meant.

  14. Hi Terence

forgot to tell you some of my survey questions can be multiple answers (MA)instead of single answer (SA)

  17. Hi guys!

There’s too little response to this survey to draw any firm conclusions. It may be an insight to some aspects and general views, but I cannot see how it can help.

The questions also do not allow a second choice, you can only choose one answer so that skews the selection results.

  18. Thanks Kenneth #24, and members,

Todate, 55 people have responded to our online survey “How to make SHC more vibrant”. I agree with you the numbers are small, although the respondents need not fill in their names.

Briefly, I see a few trends.

    1. 33% of respondents indicates their interest to lobby for Senior’s interests in Singapore.

    2. More than half of respondents prefer SHC to continue to be a loose structure, as it is right now.

    3. More than half half of respondents look at the agenda before joining the monthly SHC gatherings.

    4. More than 70% think SHC has friendly people and activities.

    5. More than 60% of respondents joined SHC for the healthy activities or for its networking activities.

    6. More than 60% thinks that most members join SHC because it provides a platform for members to meet and socialize with other members of similar age group.

I was rather surprised to see that 33% would like to be lobbyists for seniors. If you are one of them, can you give an example.

What do the rest of you think about the feedback?

    Terence Seah

  19. Hi Terence,
Your survey results are useful. I did the survey early this week and recorded the results; today the results are different because the survey allows updated information to be shown. Thanks.
    thomas kuan

  20. Hi Terence @ #25.

I refer to your question that comes after your Item (6).

I was one of those who chose lobbying for seniors. You ask for an example.

    (1) That SHC approaches the authorities for public funding subsidy to fund a purchase or long term lease of a place outside Singapore where land and rental is low, and where cost of living in terms of food is cheap. All Singapore Citizens who are >65 years are eligible to apply to stay there.

    (2) Why should the authorities subsidise this project? The retional is that the authorities are subsidising many sectors of societies in Singapore already, why not include also the seniors who are 65 and over.

    (3) To approach the authorities, we must have a body corporate. After all, there is a “Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals” , so why not one for the betterment of Seniors?

    (4) Thinking aloud on this matter, I suggest SHC stays as a loose group as it is now. A society (perhaps) named SilverHairs Retirerees Club be registered with the Registrar
of Societies (SHRC). Membership of SHRC is by yearly subscription. SHRC elects a committee to lobby from the government for the required funds. The lobbying should not be high-profile and with no political innuendo, so as not to give the impression of confrontation with the authorities. If possible, should not use the word “lobby”.
To use the word “request” appears too weak, perhaps “pressurised request” is a better word.

Perhaps the Committee for the Short Term Off-Shore Retirement Homes can put this item on their Agenda for consideration.

    Wai Jin

  21. Hi Wai Jin,

We have not met but I have following your comments quite closely.
Personally I have the same idea as you. This was discussed some time back but was not supported.
This purpose of this survey was to ascertain if there was a shifting trend towards more involvement by members. As it stand, you may notice that more than half wants status quo, i.e. letting it be a loose entity. About half remains ambivalent about participating actively in SHC.
What you are suggesting has already been brewing for a while. Let’s see how things develop- Terence- it’s your call :-).

    James

  22. Hi James #28, Wai Jin #27,

Personally, I do not reject new ideas, even difficult ones. However, I would reserve my comments until we hear from more members if they too like the ideas and how they see the ideas turning into fruit.

James, I don’t always make the call. We need to hear from other members too.

A point which concerns me is our survey results on “How to make SHC more vibrant” indicates that most of the respondents are not interested in Business opportunities, although a higher number indicated interested in retirement issues.

At the same time, I noticed from the overall response that many of the respondents prefers to participate if they are interested in any issue/activity, but someone else must organise it.

    Terence Seah

  23. Hi James @ #28 and Terence @ #29

I agree with Kenneth @ #24 that the survey cannot not be used to arrive at any firm conclusion.

First of all, out of a total membership of X hundreds, or Y thousands (I don’t know which) there were only 47 responded to the survey. In general, in any group there is always the silent majority. Therefore those who are really interested and vocal about the matter must spearhead it. Only when it becomes a realty, then the silent majority will decide to support it or not.

Terence @ #29. Since members are not interested in business opportunities, then we should not be lobbying for business opportunities. Lobbying for off-shore retirement resorts for the elderly ( >= 65 years ) is a retirement issue. To request for government subsidy, it must be a non-profit project. But you must have a body corporate to make the request.

The existing SHC already has a membership base, we need only to get a certain percentage of the members to agree to be members of a registered society, by paying the membership fees. Hence, Terence, the call is still yours. You have to allow someone to use SHC’s membership data base.

    Wai Jin

  24. Oooops. Typo error! in #31

My first sentence should read ” …. the survey cannot be used for arriving at any firm conclusion”

Sorry, it was a double negative.

    ai Jin

  25. Hi Wai Jin #31, James #28,

Re the issue of seeking government funding, I do not disagree with your idea and direction. Logically, the idea makes sense as the investments are huge and require lots of resources.

However, I have to admit I personally have no interest or the patience to seek government funding. But, I am receptive to the idea of someone to champion and push this idea from among SHC members. Hope your call for my position is clear.

    Terence Seah

  26. Hi James @ #28

Since the idea ( public funding for off-shore retirement homes) was not supported previously, then what is the next issue the seniors (elderly) want to be lobbied?
11 persons in this execise would like to lobby for Seniors’
interest in Singapore. How to find out what issues to lobby for? Do you know how many members are there in SHC? I don’t know.

    Wai Jin

  27. Hi Wai jin,

As I understand, the Club works on individual initiatives. Now that you know there are 11 potential lobbyists, you may want to consider spearheading this and then prepare a survey to reaffirm their commitment and to identify the issues to be lobbied. It is not how many members SHC has, but how many are prepared to stand up to be counted.

    James

  28. Hi James @ #35.

My IT skill is too basic as to be able to lead or spearhead any subject. I don’t know how to prepare a format when readers respond to a question, and the answer will automaticaly feed back to me. How about I call for the first meeting, and you or someone take over from there?
As far as computer is concerned, I can surf the internet, email, do Words, Spreadsheets, and TurboCad (a simplified form of AutoCad). Anyother things I don’t know.

    Wai Jin

  29. Hi Wai Jin,

Actually I am pretty bad on the computer as well. I just learned how to how to develop a survey form from Google Document ( which to my surprise was quite easy!) I did this to drive the alternative lifestyle survey ( please see the new post).

You had expressed interest in the retirement home which now is divided into two separate exercises in view of differing emphasis. My current priority in in driving this alternative lifestyle project, which I would like to see how it will develop further. You may want to join in, then when we meet up, we can discuss the other issues as well.

    James

  30. Comment on the results from the survey.

i refer to the qn on the future direction of SHC. Out of 47 respondents, 11.5 % would like to see SHC include non social activities. This % translates to about 5 persons (out of 47).

This no. may be small but I feel that the silent majority may also be interested in non social activities, and that may be one of the reasons why they remain ‘invisible’ now.

btw, non social activities would be those that focus on skill learning, knowledge acquisition, creative thinking….
socializing is secondary and incidental in non social activities/events.

    2-ct’s worth.

  31. Good morning Terence Seah,

    1) We hear and will heed your call for introducing more friends to become new mmebers of SHC.

    2) I notice that the Calendar of Events for the months Jan to Dec for this yr events has been deliberately removed.

The Calendar is v. useful as sometimes we r busy n would no time to read all the latest comments . So a summary of the activities in the calendar helps to saves us time from rapidly browsing at individual comments/ posts.

    3) Pls. consider my suggestion.
